Decided to skip the pipe for this morning. Ever since I got a little sick from a new blend this weekend, I've not been quite as interested in smoking my pipes. It really should be a weekend kind of thing.

I doubt that 6502 board would speed up an existing system very much. That chip was really sparse on registers (3 including the accumulator, IIRC, but it's been many years), and you were supposed to use the "zero page" memory for your temporary storage. So it accesses external memory quite a bit more than contemporaries like, for example, the 8080A, which had six general purpose registers plus an accumulator.
In 1977 that didn't matter much since you could include a relatively speedy SRAM for that page in your design. But that thing is going to be running 1% of the new CPU speed leaving your system I/O bound nearly 100% of the time. Pretty cool project, though. Posted by: Ace's liver at October 14, 2021 04:27 AM (wGeit) 11
Heh. Nevermind. This guy's CPU isn't a direct replacement - it uses internal RAM, which is fast.

Commodore PET - now there's a machine that I have not seen since grad school forty years ago. We used one to control some liquid chromatography equipment, IIRC. The keypad was punky with not actual separate keys, but those "bubble" type actuators under a polymer sheet. I would be shocked if such could last for forty years without having to have been replaced more than once. But on the flip side, the shipping cost itself may drop. Right now, shipping operators have dialed into the shipping cost the assumption that once it arrives, the ship will ride at anchor for as much as two months, all while crewed, and running hotel services such as lights, heat, meal prep...etc. So pay and fuel costs continue to mount while the ship is idle at anchor. If unloading times are reduced, allowing the ship to get back underway, generating revenue, then the actual cost to ship a container may drop back down closer to normal. So....possibly higher stevedore costs may be offset by lower shipping costs. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice. Asymptomatic raycist at October 14, 2021 06:15 AM (3D/fK) 130

>>So....possibly higher stevedore costs may be offset by lower shipping costs. That's speculative, the upfront costs of paying overtime and night/day/holiday differentials to stevedor's, longshoreman and teamsters is going to be a massive upfront cost that's going to pushed off ultimately to the consumer. And at the end of the day with inflation moving towards hyperinflation, the current costs of shipping will seem like a bargain.
