Update on Southwest Airlines: Less a Sick-Out Than an Opt-Out of Overtime?

"Nice Deb" Heine spoke to an actual Southwest Airlines pilot, and he explained what happened over the weekend.

The carrier's 10,000 pilots "are the most conservative collection of white collar employees in the country," explained the pilot, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. He estimated that at least 60 to 70 percent of pilots at Southwest are, like himself, former military.

The tyrannical mandate, he explained, erased all of the good will pilots and other conservative employees had felt toward their company.

That newfound ill will manifested itself over the three day weekend, not with an organized strike, but with many disgruntled employees calling in sick, or not signing up for overtime to help the airline fulfill the increase in flights typical for a holiday weekend.

That bit about not signing up for voluntary overtime is interesting, and I believe is a scoop by Heine and American Greatness.

Interesting tactic, if true. Their contracts may forbid sick-outs and the like, but nothing in their contracts would require they sign up for voluntary holiday overtime.

Assuming this is true (and I do), that means that Southwest pilots can essentially shut the airline down every holiday. And their contracts do not forbid this tactic.

Of course, Southwest says they'll be firing the Domestic Terrorists... the day before Thanksgiving. Good luck with that, fellas!

Meanwhile, United Airlines confirmed it would be firing 232 employees for refusing the vaccine.

8 It would make sense that they rely on overtime in order to get holiday seasons to be functional. Airline pilots aren't seasonal employees that you can reasonably hire and fire en masse.

The social media company, which allows more critical commentary of public figures than of private individuals, is changing its approach on the harassment of journalists and "human rights defenders," who it says are in the public eye due to their work rather than their public personas.

Speaking of that. Why is it that it's no big deal for a company to surprise you with a pink slip, but you're supposed to give them two weeks notice?

I worked for a company that had two surprise layoffs with 40ish people being shown the door each time. The first was about three months after I started working there. The second was about three and a half years later. After the second one, I quit on the spot. Fuck em. If that's how they treat my co-workers, I'm out.

The second time I got notified of an employee - it was a 57-year-old pilot that had passed away - I walked around for half an hour and finally called our team and said 'enough is enough,'" he told CBS. "We can do something about this, we believe in safety."

113 I read the Southwest CEO said that no one would be fired for not getting the vaccine and that he personally thought that the federal mandate was a bad idea.

Perhaps Southwest will do the following: Declare, officially, that it is mandatory for every employee to get vaccinated, and then simply not do anything about employees who don't. That way they have followed the federal government's mandate and can remain a federal contractor, but not piss off or lose any employees.

It all comes down to the yet to be made official federal mandate. Biden didn't say much about it other than it would come through OSHA as a workplace safety issue. He didn't mention, and I don't think anyone else from the government has, how companies are going to be expected to force compliance.

I don't know if anybody's doing this, but everyone who is suing over the various mandates needs should incorporate the data about vaccines losing efficacy over time into the lawsuit paperwork. I'm still hearing the "99% effective vax" stuff from people who should know better and I dunno if that's from ignorance or refusal to incorporate new data. Even if the "99%" effective held, there's plenty of reason to not have mandates, especially with how they're being done, but more people should "flip" if it's a bad rule *and* ineffective.

I've overheard plenty of vile comments towards and odious plans for the "unvaxxed" and it soured my opinion of more people I know personally than I first anticipated. Dunno what I can do about it except privately seethe (nd maybe document?) for now.

Natural market forces generally tend to push things in this direction. It doesn't help that they're unionized and require licenses of course, but to be price competitive you generally have to minimize costs. Which means not a whole lot of spare capacity under normal operating conditions(which is why utility companies generally operate under controlled conditions, because you really need the spare capacity there).

My first "real job" was a hospital shift at a big financial technology company. 12 hour overnights, 3 days one week, 4 days the next. It was structured to avoid overtime. The company *hated* paying overtime.

We were also, however, an essential operations group. We had to be there. If there was a blizzard and the roads were impassable, we'd have to stay on the clock. The first time this happened, we started covering for each other so people could take naps for an hour or two. The company didn't have cots. It shocked me. We were a round-the-clock operation that sometimes - at least once a year, sometimes 3-4 times - had people who had to work doubles or triples due to weather. And no cots in a supply closet somewhere.

I kept my own in the car after the first one.

167 And this is just the start. As the deadlines get nearer we will see more and more of this sort of situation and corporate stuttering and stammering and trying to have their cake and eat it too.

But in the long run with a 30% reduction in flights they will go bankrupt very shortly. And don't forget a lot of people don't have the money or the inclination to travel now adays so they will also lose some income from that.

Let them get a look at how the economy works the way it used to a hundred years ago.

199 The story in today's Wall Street Journal went into this, though it downplayed the effect of the mandate. A big problem is that SW, like all airlines, is starting to ramp up its flight schedule, but it's short-staffed, largely due to personnel losses during the pandemic's shutdown, and staffing up again has proved a serious challenge; and the pressure of trying to fly a full schedule with fewer staff than necessary are pushing pilots to near breakdown.

Well basically during the lockdowns oil prices tanked hard. Didn't help that Saudi Arabia and Russia had a price during either. This meant greatly reduced capital spending and lots of oil companies went under. Racing to increase production hasn't served oil companies particularly well over the last five years so for now they're opting to be cautious about capital spending, especially with the Biden presidency.

Do they plan to never hire an unvaxxed person in the future?

Let's face it, there's turnover in every industry. If this vaxx is so damn important, I guess they'll never hire a baggage handler, a fueler, a mechanic, or even floor sweeper who can't prove they're vaccinated, right?

More questions than answers are coming out of this fiasco, but the underlying point is that the small people must bend the knee, or bear the mark.

Natural gas, once it started to move, was going to move fast. It's been setting up for a gigantic move for a long time.

Gas has been selling for under the cost of production for many years. The reason for this is fracking. When you frack for oil, you're going to get gas, too. Way more than you need or want. So what the hell do you do with it? Well, you can flare it off and get nothing, or you can sell it below cost and get *something* for it because you're going to produce it no matter what when you go for the oil. So that's what they've been doing.

But now fracking is essentially banned, and huge amounts of the electric power plants have switched to gas because it was so cheap for so long. More demand with less supply and the need to actually turn a profit on the stuff means major price moves. This doesn't rule out chicanery, either, of course.

So if you fire, willy-nilly, say, 20% of your employees for not getting vaccinated, what's that going to do to operations? Did Tiffany and Jennifer in HR think of that?

235 As was pointed out by Robert Barnes on the weekend Vlog, there are a number of lawsuits against private companies who are acting as government enforcers, that have been won at the trial court level by claiming that social media is acting as a government entity.

The famous Mississippi Burning case established that non government personnel can legally be considered government entities if they have both instructions from, and protection by, the government.

Section 230 protection of social media companies fulfills the protection part of the government entity legal equation. The fact they are doing the government's bidding fulfills the instruction part, so that they become liable to the first amendment violation lawsuits.

This letter is a request for a religious exemption to the company COVID-19 vaccination requirement in accordance with Title VII. As A Christian, I have a sincerely held religious belief in the sanctity of life. Life begins at conception and we are all created in God's image with a life worthy of living. Elective abortion and the use of products of conception related to abortion for medical purposes is a sin against God. The COVID-19 vaccines administered and required per company policy all use aborted fetal cells in either their testing or manufacture. Therefore the use of these vaccines makes me complicit in abortion and makes me morally accountable to God in sin.

The Catholic Church teaches that "vaccination is not, as a rule, a moral obligation and that, therefore, it must be voluntary." Thus, the Catholic Church teaches that I must not be forced to take a COVID-19 vaccine.

I am a member of the Catholic organization the Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima under the guidance of Bishop Athanasius Schneider who, on this issue of conscience, has come down against any use of the available abortion-derived vaccines because it would be sinful to cooperate,

Well, as someone who's only marginally employed now thanks to the left-wing screwing everything up...

You have to realize, Trump's term was only a three year interval in a roughly thirteen year period of the Left Deindustrializing things. I really wish he hadn't abdicated in favor of Fauci back in March 2020.

Thing 2008 for when they really stepped up their game. This year is only when their last thirteen years of effort came to fruition.

Also, since fracking is done on a much shorter time scale than the Old Normal's wells, there's less slack built into the system.

267 What Ace posted is exactly what is happening. Most airlines run lean and SWA was hurting for staff already - they let too many people "early retire" when the Covid hit and have been relying on guys picking up extra open time trips. The company runs lean and pilots make extra money for the trips.

When a bunch of guys decide on Friday to say "Naaah, I'm staying home this weekend with the family instead of picking up that extra trip" the system falls apart.

Now, riddle yourself why FedEx and UPS have not made any noise about vaccine mandates. The ramp workers (the ones who throw the boxes every night) will bail out like rats leaving a sinking ship and the freight will stop moving. You want to see supply chain disruptions - wait until half of cargo airlines ramp workers walk off the job.

And both companies are "federal contractors" and carry US mail and are part of the CRAF.

301 73 There is a shortage of airline pilots in the market, but about to be a bunch looking for jobs. There is also a surplusage of jets off lease from the downturn last year. Access to the two, jets and pilots, is typically a huge barrier to entry. Someone is going to start an airline or two in no time flat.

I think they are waiting until an actual enforceable mandate happens rather than virtue signal for the woke mob. For passenger airlines (and United is the worst - they always lead the woke parade) they see it as a plus. Fly us! All of our peeps are vaxxed!

Cargo airlines - no passengers, no flight attendants - just move the freight. If push comes to shove I think they will fight back and show actual numbers of people that will quit and operations will grind to a halt. No one wants that.

390 Weather-wise, you can get used to a lot. I grew up in northern Iowa, which gets all 4 seasons HARD. Serious humidity and heat in Summer, especially if you're working in the corn fields.

393 I am glad Biden and Bootygig are on top of this supply chain bottle neck. Truckers should drive at night when the roads are less crowded. While I am sure this will resolve the problem in a day or two, they are further steps that could be taken.
Why should trucks have speed limits when there are empty shelves somewhere. Those Australian truck trains pulling 5 and 6 trailers are a good option. Mandatory off the road time and mile logging? Screw that. Defund the police, especially the highway patrol at the weigh stations. Trillion dollar infrastructure funding will take care of any collapsed bridges. And legalize amphetamines for truckers to enable all their high speed 24/7 driving shifts.

399 I was listening to the Gary/AZ/Mauler podcast from yesterday and they were talking about the Superman thing. He is the son of Superman and Lois (beside the point.) His love interest is also a reporter (how revolutionary.) They mentioned something that actually really rang true to me: His love interest is also a reporter, whose superpower is being invulnerable. Now setting aside the squicky implications, there is also the narrative problem- how is that exciting.

Superman is a very hard character to write since he is literally a demi-god. The only way you can put him under threat usually is to put his loved ones in danger. If they are invulnerable, well that is a good thing for them, but not for story. Then it is ALL agenda all the time and... that is not compelling.

1. Go with the Ubermensch angle, lean into it the way Lester Dent did with Doc Savage. Superman is a benign god who leads by example, standing up to forces that lesser man cannot.

2. Go with the farmboy background, lean into his optimism and gentleness. This is the Justice League cartoon version who lives in a 'world of cardboard' and is constantly concerned about hurting people, so he does less than he can because he is worried about excess power. He doesn't want to rule or be worshiped, he's just trying to help.

We had rain - and even more bizarre, actual thunderstorms, with actual lightning - last week - in October. Didn't check, but I doubt it's rained 5 times in October in 75 years.

Somehow we're surviving. Friend couldn't get a time for a three-some at any of the executive courses we were going to play, so maybe Friday (when it will be dry and in the 80s). Put off swim workout til tomorrow, yard work, reloading, and other needful stuff today - but I've never outgrown feeling antsy and dying to get out/move around when the weather is this nice.

Which is much of the time. Hence the constant struggle to focus and get stuff done.

446 They are probably hoping that one day, most flights can be flown like drones. A scary proposition indeed. They will likely factor in the liability from the crashes against the cost savings of pilots.

Of course they want to do that. Money money money. As soon as they are convinced they will not pay more out in damages than they will save in pilot costs it will happen. So what if modern US jetflights almost never crash and now some people could die? Money money money

***
I recall a classic Silver Age story, "Superman Under the Green Sun," in which he visits an alien planet and is de-powered by the sun. Usually only red suns would do that, but somehow the green one did. He is forced into slavery in a labor camp run by a dictator who, oddly enough, resembles a certain Austrian corporal later in his infamous life. (This was only 15 years after the war, remember.)

I don't recall how he got out of the trap, but that was a tight spot he was in.

What's sad about this bullshit is that Superman the movie is so good, and so wholesome and American, and these Communist assholes have to go and ruin it by turning him into a strange perverted failed person who only cares about Communist ideals.

What a fucked up country...we go from not teaching kids homosexuality, to teaching kindergartners to put condoms on bananas and anal sex to schools advocating for trannies anally raping girls.

You could say this is pretty damned demonic.

452 Kryptonite, remember, came in various forms: green (the really deadly stuff), gold (which robbed Kryptonians of their powers permanently), and red, which affected Superman for 2-3 days and forced some kind of change upon him, different each time. In one story all it did was give him a 6th finger on each hand -- awkward if somebody noticed it on Clark Kent. There were all sorts of crises that could be drummed up, and the DC writers did a good job back then.

459 Superman is a very hard character to write since he is literally a demi-god. I

When I was a kid, someone gave me and my brother a reprint book of Superman comics from the first one thru the 60s. At the start, Superman was just strong and bulletproof and could just jump long distances. Seems that they really jacked up his abilities in the 50s mostly so they could write more epic stories. And of course, the more godlike you make him, the harder it is to come up with threats for the story.

464 Superman is a very hard character to write since he is literally a demi-god. The only way you can put him under threat usually is to put his loved ones in danger.

Well there are three tools to use.

First, don't think of putting Superman in danger, think of putting superman in situations where his strength and invulnerability isn't the answer.

Second, don't write a Superman story, write a good story that happens to have Superman in it. Write the story well rather than writing Superman.

Third, use the supporting characters. Most of what made Superman (he 1970s one) work so well was Lois Lane's character being a catalyst for Superman's behavior and reactions.

The pit to fall into is threat of the issue "Superman vs x". That's boring, and its lazy writing. You're not writing interesting stories, you're just throwing a dart at the wall to get a bad guy and then Superman fights him.

467 So this whole thing with 'voluntary overtime' is something that my company actually deals with, we have a union that seems to function similarly.

So you have 'voluntary' overtime, which people sign up for, but the company has the right to MANDATE overtime, as long as it is done in the proper time period and process (at least 24 hours in advance, and lowest seniority capable of doing the job in our case).

With pilots its going to be more complicated I'm sure, because there are hard rules on how much rest/downtime that pilots have between flights/work days.

It sounds like they were used to more people than they needed volunteering for overtime, and so they weren't actually paying attention, then they tried to staff their flights and realized that it was too late to mandate overtime for the pilots.

Of course that's if you believe Southwest in the first place. To be blunt, they've told so many conflicting lies in the last few days I simply don't believe them.
