I recently got a drip coffee maker, a Proctor Silex. It's the basic model: on/off, pop the lid to pour the water in and put in a filter. It's doing a good job. Even the carafe pours without dribbling. I no longer require coffee that will dissolve the spoon so I don't need cowboy coffee. Don't know how long it will last but there isn't much to go wrong and for less than 25 bucks it's a bargain.

the only "fancy" feature it has is a timer, so I can set it up the night before and wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and get right to it

When my late brother refused to accept a buy out, GM assigned him to work with a supplier in Australia for over a year - two weeks there and two weeks back at the Tech Center - continuously. I'm in the same boat. My primary motivation for refusing the stab is a basic risk/benefit assessment failure which doesn't follow neatly into the "disability" or "religious" exemption request options I'm presented. So, I'm operating under the assumption that I'll be shitcanned in 7 weeks. A few years back, I was thinking of changing careers and picking up a trade (e.g., HVAC, electrician). Maybe I'll end up doing that.

If I'm going to have it in hand might as well know how to use it. Any idea what style to use for self defense: crook style, knob top, etc.? My current stick is a round top style so I can push straight down if needed. I'm not as heavy as before so a crook style, not centered over the shaft, can work.

I'm still a tad unclear on this. Jobs numbers were supposed to be 500K but were 200K, unemployment going down (I assume because older workers are saying f*ck it), people getting fired because they won't get injected, and somehow the stock market keeps going up.

I know that plumbing can be a lucrative career but I've been a bit of a germaphobe even before Chinese Lung AIDS. I also personally know someone who worked sanitation that picked up Hep C and spent several months injection Interferon directly into his stomach every night. He was lucky in that he eventually make a full recovery. So I'm leery. But, hey, things could change!

Hi JBT, Ive looked at canes at one point. i have self defense training not recently and...age. My observations are that they just kinda trick a regular cane out. Unless its a sword, or metal cane. The wooden ones are euiped with grips, a paracord loop for your wrist, and some have teeth engraved into he bottom length. There are both kng and hooked. I would find the right weight for defense (hardwood) that you are comfortable and you could probably trick it it yourself. Then learn to use it. I'm sure others here have defense training with a similar object and can make recommendations.

My choices are a Blackthorn walking stick, which can augmented with lead inserts, a Ka-Bar aluminum one which has a larger crook than your drugstore ones, and useful for trapping, a Cold Steel sword cane (may not be legal in your locale), and the Cold Steel Ten Shin, which isn't made anymore, but looks like it's still barely available.
None are magic, you would be well to watch videos and practice, even better is live training (can be hard to find).

Schools do this as well, but they raise the salaries of the teacher the last couple years (cuz they are nice with OPM), and the teacher retires at 55 with full benefits. The retirement plans may be underfunded, but the public will take up the slack for the next 35 years.
So we have a mass of (9 month/year) teachers (and other public union employees that worked 25-30 years) that are now making six figures in retirement, with full health care. ... afaik, many private sector people fired lose their pension, or some BigCorps get merged, or investigated ... 25 years of "service" and they don't even get the gold watch.
But salaries are pretty high now ... "kids" in the right tech start off making ? a lot.

After I built my wine cellar about a decade or so ago, I stocked it with an assortment of red and white wines. Rookie mistake; the reds got infinitely better over time and the whites became pathetic.

I suspect there are a wide range of coffee makers used by the Horde. Right now I'm using a cheap small French Press which works great in terms of getting the full flavor of the beans in the brew *and* keeping it hot. The only disadvantage is it's kind of messy to clean; in fact that was the reason previously for buying a bottom of the line Mr Coffee where I could just dump the paper filter. But that was back when I was drinking it with cream and sugar; when I tried it black the water just wasn't soaking the grounds enough to get close to the full flavor. So then I tried a pourover cone but those get clogged up, even with cleaning them with white vinegar and scrubbing with baking soda. So I'm back to the French Press.
There you have it; the pros and cons of all the inexpensive ways I've tried to get the perfect cup of coffee.

Red Eye was peak Gutfeld. He had good writers, it played at an unusual time in the morning so they were free to do almost anything, the guests were interesting, and he was able to play off them. I don't think he's able to replicate that.

I don't watch teevee, but I do think there's something to the notion of one's comedy sensors fading out and no longer working, if one ONLY watches teevee.
Gutfeld was a hilarious writer, and I've seen clips of his shows. It looks over-produced. Like everything else on teevee.

A friend of mine has a hardwood staff about 4.4 feet long with a steel ball grip and a steel pointed ferrule. So far he mainly carries it to Faire, but if needs be he'll take it out for a walk. I wouldn't want him to hit me with it!
