This Is How The World Ends. Not With A Bang, But With An ONT

Another week has passed us by and now we're even older, and now we're even older, and now we're even older. Another week has passed us by and now we're older still.

Guess that means it's my turn to write an ONT. I have one I wrote a week or so back, I had been out with some friends and had a few drinks. I got home half lit and I wasn't tired so I thought “Gee, maybe I'll get a head start writing some of the ONT”. I wrote a whole page about Little and football and how proud I am of him. I thought it was pretty good. Next day I thought it was pretty good too, but also “That's not really ONT material”.

So let me rummage around in my bag of tricks and see if I can find something to make your hearts go pitter-pat.

Prosecutors reject charges against 5 suspects in deadly gang-related gunfight in Austin: ‘It’s just like the Wild West’

After careful investigation, the prosecutor determined that all parties involved were in a designated PvP area with their PvP flags on, so there was “nothing she could do”.*

He's At It Again

Dismissing religious objections to taking the Covid vaccine flies in the face of the principles the United States was founded on

“There are not legitimate religious exemptions,” declared Hochul, “because the leaders of all the organized religions have said there's no legitimate reason.” Even a single exception would prove her statement false, and there are many. That said, individual religious exemptions are exactly that: individual. Employers are legally required to accommodate the sincere religious beliefs of their employees, not those of the employee's denominational leaders.

On the opposite coast, the editorial board of the Los Angeles Times fervently argues that religious exemptions should be dumped altogether. “Religious exemptions don’t protect the public,” they say, “and when it comes to COVID-19, public health must remain the overriding priority.” The zeal with which the LA Times demands that personal beliefs simply don't count when they conflict with the nebulous idol of ‘public health’ is troubling to anyone who values free exercise of religion.

Ironically, mandatory and widespread Covid-19 vaccinations – the editorial board's Holy Grail – don't fully protect the public either. This summer, Los Angeles County noted that more than 10,000 patients, a full quarter of its Covid cases, were fully vaccinated. Around the globe, from Singapore to Israel, breakthrough cases among highly vaccinated populations are rising, and at Harvard University, even with the jab mandated and a 95% vaccination rate, coronavirus infections have spread far enough to force some classes to move online.

The truth is that Covid vaccination, while shown to be valuable in decreasing symptoms and hospitalizations (though not necessarily transmission), is in no way a panacea to the pandemic, and for the LA Times to suggest otherwise as a rationale for rejecting religious exemptions is a journalistic sin.

I do so love it when those who believe in nothing more than their own power and control deign to tell me what my faith does and does not teach. It's such a joy, like when atheists use verses from Acts chapter 2 to claim that Christianity supports communism. Oh, what a goodly outside falsehood has!

Halloween Songs

Well, we're now into..SHOCK-tober! That means that Halloween is coming up. Tonight's question of the day has to do with Halloween songs. What are your favorite Halloween songs? Do you like silly songs? Spooky songs? Bizarre songs? I'll open the discussion with a song that definitely falls into the later category: Avenged Sevenfold - A Little Piece Of Heaven. I'm linking and not embedding because the subject matter is bizarre and the video is probably NSFW. My wife is convinced that the video is just an un-aired episode of Metalocalypse. At the end, when the zombie priest is giving the finger and it's censored, I told her “Oh good, they censored that, now I can show it to the kids”, she just had to laugh because the finger is probably the least offensive thing in the video. In spite of all this, I find myself really liking the song itself, even though the song itself is not at all what you'd expect from a heavy metal band (or maybe it is from this band, I don't know much of Avenged Sevenfold's work aside from this song). Take a look and let me know what you think, put your own suggestions for Halloween songs in the comments below, and if you're enjoying the ONT, don't forget to like and hit the subscribe button to keep up with all the latest posts.

Musical Interlude: The Internet Is Weird Edition

So, the following song has been all the rage on TikTok lately:

It's from 1985, and it sure sounds like it. I don't remember hearing it back then, but if you told me it was by Harold Faltermeyer, I would believe you. But why is this obscure, 35 year old song suddenly popular? I think I've pieced it together, but if any of y'all know for sure, correct me on the details.

So it seems that a few years back, some internet artist make an animated short porn film featuring 2 characters from some video game called “Animal Crossing” having sex. (Great, the story starts with furries, always a good sign) He used this song as the soundtrack. The clip languished in obscurity until recently someone else did a (and here I'm not clear) parody? Tribute? video of it, and this one started to go viral. It made it to TikTok, and suddenly Generation Z became obsessed, not with the original obscure animated furry porn video, not with the tribute to the original obscure animated furry porn video, but with the SOUNDTRACK from the original obscure animated furry porn video, and started using it in all their TikTok videos. And that's how Camel By Camel became a hit 35 years after it was released.

Like I said, the internet is weird. I hope whoever Sandy Marton is got some unexpected royalty checks in the mail.

26 My Grandpa (Mom's side) lived in Longview. He had gotten in the habit of taking his morning coffee in the kitchen watching Mt. St. Helens. He saw it happen. Longview, being southwest, was spared the worst. Ironically, place like Spokane and Missoula got far more ash than Longview did.

In 1983 , when I was a teenager, we went to Washington to visit family. We got to see just how devastating that eruption was. And yet, in terms of volcanic eruptions, it was far from the worst. Scary, when you think about it.

55 Halloween songs are awesome. I have a four hour Halloween party playlist on YouTube. Some favorites are Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) by Concrete Blonde, Dead Man's Party by Oingo Boingo, and a song I heard for the first time earlier this year, The Ones by Aesthetic Perfection.

Of course, the best way to get yourself in the Halloween mood is to watch Welcome to My Nightmare from when Alice Cooper hosted The Muppet Show.

106 Thanks to everyone who expressed concern and/0r prayed for Fen Spouse who had a heart catherization today. We just got back from the hospital, having been there from about 12:00 to 8:30. The good news is that he did not have any blockages, thank God, and does not need a stent, but now we have to figure out why he gets breathless going up an incline or can't walk after he eats because he burps or feels dizzy. FenSpouse was rather crabby about having to life on his back for about 8 hours without actually being asleep, and didn't like the fact that he couldn't drive.

The were some lovely monarch butterflies on a purple bush outside as well as some colorful lovely plantings as well as labyrinth walk there and it was about 70 and sunny. I got some exercise inside by walking down lots of halls and some nice Physicians Assistant in the trauma unit went out of her way to help me. When I didn't know where I was going a second time, but somehow got off the elevator ended up in the delivery section/back halls of the hospital some nice man helped me He seemed to be listening to a sermon on his i-phone on Jacob and Esau which I thought was neat.

113 He's assuming one's soul must be pushing against matter to motivate it. That's an oddly mechanical way of thinking about it.

A particle physicist of every possible branch of science should have a whole lot of humility about what is known, what is surmised, and what we just don't know.

Because every time they think they have a model that works it gets broken and this happens routinely.

My clearest take on that is that there is a God who is putting up puzzles for us and laughing at our attempts to solve them.

115 There was a great story in the Columbian about a family camping on the mountain when it blew. They realized what the noise meant, jumped in the car and headed out. They yelled at others to get out but most took time to pack gear and didn't make it.

The family managed to stay ahead of the pyroclastic flow and make it to safety. If you are wondering why people were camping up there, the mountain had been locked down. But people complained, saying it wasn't risky. And the lumber companies wanted their crews back at work. So it was opened back up.

123 It became a Hollywood trope because there were actual instances of it happening. A few would-be suicides survived because they landed on car roofs. A metal car roof is an almost-perfect example of a "crush zone" that dissipates the energy of a falling body by deforming.

When I was at Fort Sam Houston in the 80s, I was at a bar in SA, and Bobby Pickett was there. they coaxed him to sing Monster Mash, but it was clear he was uncomfortable, and did nothing more than hold the mic in front of his face as the song played on the PA. In hindsight I think he may have been suffering from dementia (just a guess). Nevertheless I felt really bad for him. He obviously did not want to be there.

I mentioned this a couple days ago... the fires were so hot and intense that trees dropped and burned on hillsides leaving a "Ghost Tree" white ash outline of their branches on the hillsides. The ash from the fires would rain down like snow. Our deck was covered one afternoon by a blaze down in Big Sur. The smell lingered for weeks.

146 Productive day today. Finished up work then got back into the truck. Got the skim coat and some spot putty over my rocker and cab corner repairs and hit it with some primer. While that was drying, did an oil change (Mmmm, fresh Amsoil) and a coolant flush and fill. Knocked the primer down with some 320, then hit the grease points underneath and got ready to start vacuuming and shampooing the interior. One truck, fifteen projects, simultaneously. Sure, it's a 23 year old Ford, but considering that used trucks are frightfully expensive and new trucks ridiculously expensive (if you can even find one), it pays to keep things on the road as long as possible.

It became a Hollywood trope because there were actual instances of it happening. A few would-be suicides survived because they landed on car roofs. A metal car roof is an almost-perfect example of a "crush zone" that dissipates the energy of a falling body by deforming.

192 My Grandpa (Mom's side) lived in Longview. He had gotten in the habit of taking his morning coffee in the kitchen watching Mt. St. Helens. He saw it happen. Longview, being southwest, was spared the worst. Ironically, place like Spokane and Missoula got far more ash than Longview did.

Posted by: Pug Mahon at October 07, 2021 09:08 PM

I was going to college in Missoula that morning. By noon the ash was so thick the street lights came on. By the next day it looked like a moon scape. Vehicle traffic was forbidden unless medical necessity or groceries due to the billowing ash kicked up by driving. The university closed for a couple weeks so I headed home 350 miles east.

Yeah, the gods in his stories were basically a bunch of assholes who played games with humans (literally). Lots of modern cars are so much uglier than they were 15 years ago - flat noses, taller hoods - because EU pedestrian-protection laws mandate crush space around the engine.

And why Teslas look so much better, because they're not built around an engine up front.

400 Opening day of the 1978 NFL season, NE Patriots @ Washington Redskins. I'm a soon-to-be 11 year old football fanatic. (Never played a down outside the childhood pickup games, but I read every box score, every article on anything to do with the NFL that I could find.) I'm also a non-religious Jew and the Pope was in town. It was "great" to hear the broadcast of the Skins coming back to win on a 4th quarter fumble return.... Yeah, not great. I didn't (and don't) give a damn if it's the Pope, or anyone else. It was wrong to interrupt the game. Either move the game or move the friggin' Pope's schedule. The only thing sacred in D.C. in 1978 was the Redskins. We were well into the first coming of Joe Biden.

This makes me jealous. Here in Road Salt Country, it's a constant battle. Even if you buy a brand new car, the first thing you do before you even hang the fuzzy dice is to undercoat the piss out of it. My '89 Silverado 3/4 ton finally went to the junkyard in 2019. 423 This makes me jealous. Here in Road Salt Country, it's a constant battle. Even if you buy a brand new car, the first thing you do before you even hang the fuzzy dice is to undercoat the piss out of it. My '89 Silverado 3/4 ton finally went to the junkyard in 2019. Still ran like a champ, but there was just no body left and damned little frame. Sold the motor and tranny, and what was left could have been folded up like a newspaper.

I feel ya. Back in WI you had a choice of putting it away from Sept til May, figuring you would get 10 years out of anything, or doing a frameoff. Hated it, especially as I liked my choices in new cars less and less. Down here the sun ruins your paint, and I have been trying to find a reliable reasonable painter for about 10 years on and off with no luck. But still, you saw a lot more collector old cars in Rust World than you do here. I don't know if anyone notices my 20-30 year old cars up there, but here no one who isn't a buff even seems to see my 92 Caprice wagon when I park it.

I watched a Youtube video describing the thermocouple and gas valve system. The presenter had a cutaway gas valve, and the electromagnet did indeed have a lot of windings. Looked like the guts of an old 2000-ohm headphone. And the electromagnet has only enough force to make the disc stick after it is pushed into contact with the poles. But he demo'ed it using a propane torch on the thermocouple, and it did indeed make the valve hold open.

I had a full bottle of my deceased uncle's morphine.

I gave the dog a complete bottle of morphine.
He had a comfortable sleep for a day and a half. That's all
Posted by: Braenyard

I wish I'd done that with my cat rather than be manipulated into letting the vet do an intracardiac injection w/o sedation without us present.

508 what I got done today was quick and easy. Have an 01 Grand Marquis with 167k that I use in rotation on a 90 mile freeway commute. It has been bucking occasionally at 75, goes away when you get off pedal. No check engine light. I have felt this before on the same engine on the same platform. Coil packs will do this before they fail enough to put the light on. Ordered 8 off eBay for $50 or so and today popped them in. 6 out of 8 were Motorcraft so probably 20 year old 167k originals. Ran fine after, seemed a touch quicker but didn't do long freeway trip for final test. Probably going to fix it I suspect

509 Lee Majors and Farah Fawcett would be rated as an exothermic-couple.

Michael Moore and Trigglypuff would be isothermic-couple, approaching Absolute Zero in fairenheit, kelvin and the doable binary spectrum.

510 Steve - SF Gigantes, of course. It would be great to see Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, and Buster Posey get their 3rd and 4th rings (respectively). Crawford grew up a Giants fan in the East Bay - there's a famous photo of him at age 5 at the 'Stick when the team was close to being moved to Florida. He was very glum. Now he's a W.S. double winner and gold glove shortstop for his hometown team.

511 My ride is an 87 Ramcharger with no rust because when the first snowflake flies it goes into storage (my garage attached to the house) and only reappears when the roads are salt free.

It draws compliments frequently , it IS shiny (black over gold) and big. I'll probably have it until I can't drive anymore.

Images and videos in that format give me an eye tic, and make my lip curl up involuntarily, and growl slightly like John Casey in the TV show Chuck. That trend needs to slide under a burning gas truck, as Kinison would say.

513 Replaced the ballast in the florescent lamp over the kitchen sink. PIA, because couldn't obtain identical ballast, but mostly, because I had to take the whole fixture down from behind a decorative wood valence...and single-handedly get the SOB mounted back up. Balancing on step ladder, leaning over the sink, holding the fixture, behind the valence, with one hand, while trying to line up the damned mounting holes, and run screws in.

The air was rather blue.

Modern electronic ballasts are a lot lighter than the old transformer style.

I have a fuckton of odd-size fluorescent tubes, all under 4 feet, and all NOS. Most of these will run just fine, using the ballast found in the base of those "curly" fluorescent bulbs.

Now that LED lamps have become much cheaper, I am phasing out fluorescents. They use even less power, and have more pleasing light.

Go to a salvage yard, and pull the air-filter box, intake snorkel and mass airflow sensor from a P-71 junkpile. Buy the 130 watt alternator to P-71 spec, NEW from your local parts house. And the three-row radiator and transmission oil cooler, too. If you can get a low(ish) mileage P-71 rear axle and differential, do it.

The intake stuff will give you both HP and mileage boosts. The alternator will let you run in stop & go traffic and not run down the battery. The differential has a far higher speed rating, (which you might not use), but it's also a posi-track type drive, much advantage in mud n' muck. Radiator & tranny cooler? Should've been standard equipment across the brand, like from forever.

The gravitational energy between MM and Trigglypuff would be off the scales and the resulting accretion disk of material orbiting those two would be extremely exothermic.

Put a motor in it, son borrowed it. When I got it back the transmission is whining. I haven't even gotten my money's worth out of the motor yet...but I guess my son has. It's a damn fine vehicle when it runs right, a lot quieter than the Jeep, so I'd like to have it back in shape to drive to work.

519 I also had to wire an alternate ground for the radiator fan in the Mustang. The old fan fried and burned the connector, so the connector decided last week to stop making contact on the ground. I have the new connector in hand but as long as my alternate ground works I probably won't bother with putting it in.

520 Not to mention that Trigglypuff's habit of flapping her arms would result in a pulsating accretion disk that would generate even more heat and light due to the subsequent fusion that would take place there.

521 Jim: yep, it's funny how few people realize that the CVPI COP CAR (which I have a 2000 of too) is basically a Grand Marquis, stripped, with a few different options. All of which can easily be popped on your GM if you want them. And until recently at least, people will pay more for a worn out CVPI than a mint, gently driven ex-senior GM with a much nicer interior. To make the car run right with the P-71 airbox you have to get a different program flashed to the computer though. Otherwise, too much air. The "Marty Tune" is supposed to be the hot tip. I really don't care that much to do it, they are fast enough for my commute.

---
Apropos of nothing, I was 10 in 1978. Catholic school kid in a very Catholic city of Philadelphia. Pope JPII was doing his North American tour. He was due to visit our fair city, and my family went to Broad Street to find a viewing spot for the motorcade. Got there 4 hours early, the Pope arrived 3 hours late. The motorcade zipped by, as he was late to perform Mass, so we waited over 7 hours to get a quick glimpse of his white robes as he flew by. At least I got the day off from school. :shrugs:

530 I'm not even close to being in the same class as AOP and other mechanically inclined Morons, but I do know basic stuff. I once changed out the alternator on a mid-80s VW Rabbit on the side of Rt 1 in southeastern Pennsylvania near the Brandywine battlefield. The wonder isn't that I got the job done (it's shit simple), but that I managed to tell my practice wife exactly what tools to bring and what parts to buy clearly enough that she brought the right ones.

Somewhere between 30 yo me and *mumble mumble* year old me I lost that. It became easier to just pay someone to do stuff that I COULD do but just didn't WANT to do.

No longer. Lately I've been doing more of that stuff myself. The reason is twofold; #1, I have a 16 YO son and I'm teaching him how to do this stuff, he needs to know and #2, I find that DOING stuff, even simple stuff, is very gratifying. Hey, *I* did that!

When I managed to drive my zero turn mower into the lake last month, *I* pulled it out (with help from Little and my long-suffering wife) and *I* got it running again (with invaluable help from AOP on the phone).

There's a certain satisfaction from that that's been missing in my life for far too long.
