Saturday Afternoon Chess thread 10-09-2021

Sophia Loren Plays Chess

There will be no movie thread today. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Pic Note:

Ms. Loren looks like she's thinking about moving her queen out on move 2. Never move your queen out on move 2! That's a rookie mistake.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (1436)

Goal: White can force mate in 2 moves
Hint: Deflect the Black King over one square

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1441)

Advanced Problem - White To Play (1437)

A two part problem: How would you promote your pawn, and then, having done that, how would you gobble up Black's remaining pawns?

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Very weird. I noticed that both black and white had advanced pawns on their rook files for no apparent reason. I did that when I was 13yo and building a "spaceship" that turned out to be a fundamentally correct two knights opening with central pawns...and the advanced rook pawns to make it look like an X-Wing. This was before I'd learned much about chess. LOL

I have seen it more than I care admit. For two reasons:

1) I am married.
2) Julie Andrews

I do like it more than most musicals. Which is tepid praise. I do not like musicals.

100 I'm not a fan of most musicals, with 3 exceptions:

Cabaret, Saturday Night Fever (not a traditional musical, no; the leads don't sing), and the early Elvis Presley film King Creole. In each case we know where the music is coming from -- the musical parts all take place in nightclubs -- and so we have no need to suspend disbelief.

That said, I'm kinda fond of Guys and Dolls. I played Nathan Detroit in the show in high school, and the songs are very effective and catchy.

104 Julie Andrews had a real winning streak in the 60s.

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is a tremendously silly movie but tons of fun and stuffed with snappy tunes.

It offends the woke crowd however so see it now on it's new updated blu-ray before they ban it.

BONUS: The dresses Mary Tyler Moore wears in "TMM" absolutely match OM's taste in female accoutrement. He should a picture or ten for the Chess Thread.

I knew how to parallel park, and was pretty good. And I know, I know. Mansplaining etc. But I read this about a year ago. And it is pretty fool proof. Maybe next time you are waiting in the car, you can try it? (Full lock = the maximum the steering wheel will allow).

Pull alongside the car ahead of the space you want. Align your rear axle with that car's bumper. Turn the wheel toward the curb at full lock.Back up until the center of your inside rear tire aligns with the streetside edge of the forward car. Straighten wheel, continue to reverse. When your outside tire aligns with that same edge, turn the wheel the other way.If all went according to plan, you're in the space, bodywork intact. Get out and admire your work.

If yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theatre, when there is no fire, a crime, is STOPPING someone from yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theatre, when there is a fire, a crime?

By stopping someone from warning people of a deadly situation, isn't that person an accessary to any deaths?

The reason I ask is. Fauci, Facebook, Twitter, WHO, Media and others have suppressed information from dozens of Doctors and Scientist about HCQ and Ivermectin. They've also suppressed the data that shows the adverse effects of the Covid vaccines.

This has lead to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of unnecessary deaths.

198 Musicals..they were the thing for the people who grew up from the 30s thru the 50s, at least the pre-rock 50s. My parents were always watching them on the TV in the 70s. A generational thing that takes a while to completely go away, then suddenly you notice they don't exist. It always seemed sort of comedy to me when suddenly everyone would start singing in a movie, but not to my parents. I think the latest thing to be slowly dying out is caring about bands. My generation did, but it seems like after Gen X they still listen to music but they don't care that much. Wonder if future generations will wonder why the older people cared about superhero entertainment?

263 I went to our only sort of mega grocery store today to get a good deal on bacon, only $5/#. They didn't have any so I talked to the head of meat department. He said if he orders 6 boxes of something he is lucky to get 1 box, standard is to get ZERO. Paper aisle was less than 40% stocked. Frozen food coolers, 50% maybe. I didn't check further as I left.

Also, meat department head said, without prompting that things are going to get much worse with Biden in charge. This I remind you is in the leftist of leftist kalifornia.

How is it implied consent to not know information that was hidden from you?
We were never told that there are drugs that could cure Covid, so never knew to ask for them.
Fauci and others publicly said they didn't work, when their emails showed they did. Doesn't that show intent, and that lead to unnecessary deaths?

Again, thinking like an Engineer, not a lawyer, so could be missing something. Not trying to be combative, just trying to understand how they can be blameless

298 I know that there are a lot of fine women school bus drivers. but I have to say watching them all back up and park the buses, the men generally do a better job.

I think its very useful for wives to recognize this kind of thing because it helps understand men better. Men on average are good at certain kids of things, we have a natural affinity toward certain sorts of tasks and activity. Conversely men are poorer at certain things which seem obvious and easy to you as women because your natural gifts.

Understand this and your relationship with men will tend to be smoother: don't get angry at him for not being as good as you at some things. Understand that's not in his wheelhouse. He's not doing it on purpose to mess with you.

That's what Reagan did when he was first elected.

PATCO, the national ATC union, was threatening to strike.

Reagan pointed out it was illegal under their contract.

PATCO decided to go on strike.

Reagan fired every last one of them.

Don't know where the replacements came from, but the world was put on notice: don't f*ck with Reagan.

Before Reagan fired the ATCs in 1981, he made a phone call/visit with the CJCS, and asked him to look at how many military ATCs we had, and about activating Reserve and NG ATCs if necessary. (Much as PM Thatcher made sure the UK power plants had plenty of excess coal before the coal strike of 1984.) Once Reagan was told we had plenty of military ATCs and that he could activate the Reserve and NG ATCs for the purpose, Reagan made his move and fired the PATCO ATCs.

(If you get a paycheck from government, and I don't care what you do, you have zero business belonging to a union.)
