Victor Davis Hanson Tells Tucker Carlson Why He Left the National Review (and Was Happy to Leave)

National Review continues running Hanson's syndicated column. Many believe they do this cynically, to suggest that Victor Davis Hanson is still with National Review, when in fact he left them, and for ideological reasons, not financial ones.

The syndicated column, anyone can run that, if they pay the subscription for it.

But he's not with them any more. He left that organization.

Video at RCP; excerpts from their transcription below.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON:
As far as your other question, yeah, I lost all those friends.

TUCKER CARLSON: Really?

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: I left the National Review this year after 20 years and I think they were happy to see me leave too.

TUCKER CARLSON: Why did you leave National Review?

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: Because there were certain issues that would pop up occasionally, and I could predict what the answer was going to be. The Covington kids. I just sensed that before we knew anything, people would come and condemn them. Or the Access Hollywood tape--

TUCKER CARLSON: People at National Review condemned the Covington kids?

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: I think there were certain people in the Republican movement, or establishment, who felt it is their duty to internally police their own, and that's kind of a virtue signal to the left.

We are just part of your class, we share the same values as you do, and we keep our crazies. And they are not empirical.

You saw it on January 6. We all condemn that baffoonish riot. But within two weeks, I said to myself Ashli Babbitt was shot unarmed and we don't know anything about the policeman, we don't know anything about the report. When a policeman shoots somebody unarmed, there are pictures everywhere.

TUCKER CARLSON: No warning, by the way.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: They're having Officer Sicknik lie in state, but I want to know where is the evidence is that he was killed? He wasn't killed, he died of a stroke --

TUCKER CARLSON: National Review wasn't on that?

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: No. No. An "armed insurrection." There were no weapons found on the people they arrested.

They are not even being charged and tried with dispatch. There are sitting in purgatory.

So these issues, I would get angry about, and I would try to convey that anger, but I think ... a lot of them felt it was their duty as Republican establishmentarians to tell the world they didn't approve of Donald Trump's tweets or his crudity.

My message was always: But, it's good for the middle class.

He's kind of like a Shane or Magnificent Seven or High Noon, he's a gunslinger we hired and we are the townspeople that are impotent and he came in with certain skills. And he started to have success and now we have the luxury of saying we don't like the fact that he has a six-gun. But he has to ride off into the sunset.

But they didn't -- there were other issues I think they felt were more important, so I think it was a good parting for both of us.

TUCKER CARLSON: What issues did they think were important?

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: I don't know, I think there's an image that a lot of Republicans have, both in politics and they sort of represent a sober and judicious way of looking at the world, and we are the adults in the room.

And it's more about a culture than it is an ideology.

The original Republican conservative movement, I thought, was going to go back and look at the Constitution, when Jefferson said it won't work if you pile up everybody in the cities because they will be subject to mass hysteria. Or de Tocqueville, and you look at certain ideas, I thought that's what we were.

I thought they would be champions of the middle class, but I don't think they were. I don't think they wanted to be.

Dave Reaboi had an observation: National Review was founded not to persuade the general citizenry, but to persuade a specific microscopic subset of it: New York City based liberal intellectuals and the monied class generally.

And, I would add, as New York City based liberal intellectuals and the monied class moved further and further left -- particularly on issues of culture, including immigration -- National Review moved left to keep within a stone's throw of them. After all, you cannot hope to persuade anyone you are diametrically opposed to on every issue.

When the New York City Liberal Intellectuals and the monied class they are embedded with (and sometimes literally in bed with) decided, for example, that deporting illegal aliens and building a border wall was "racist," National Review changed its views to align with this New York City Liberal Intellectual consensus.

National Review now finds itself as the proponent of a brand of watered-down, socially-liberal "conservatism" that is officially Safe for New York City Liberal Intellectuals (TM).

This, quite obviously, is not conservatism at all. And thus, their greatly reduced readership and vanishing influence with actual conservatives.

But I wish them all good luck in their future careers.

Strikes me as a reasonable conclusion, but I am not sure about the motivation. I don't think the NR - now or then - wants to persuade anyone in the NY-based liberal/money class. I think they want to find that happy niche where they get to pretend (or maybe actually be) different from those guys, but not so different that they turn into pariahs and get disinvited from all the parties, functions, speaking tours, etc. They *like* being the token "conservatives" in that crowd, and that's what they pursue.

National Review, which I started subscribing to in 1975, was at its core an anti-Communist magazine. When the Eastern Bloc dissolved in 1989-1990, it basically lost its purpose. Like Churchill, it had no great interest in domestic affairs though it nodded its head in the right direction every now and then.

It should have folded 30 years ago.

Intellectuals in general. There is a yawning chasm of mutual contempt between real people (regardless of class or ideology) and intellectuals.

And yes, I am anti-intellectual when that word is used as a noun. If you're "An Intellectual" - either by self-proclamation or common description - then I have no use for you. Take VDH as an example. He is an extremely intellectual person - well read, well studied, prodigious intellectual output - but he is not An Intellectual. He often goes out of his way to make that clear.

Only if the person who got shot is black or hispanic or muslim or some other mythically "oppressed" person.

If it's just a white person, the media doesn't give a shit.

White people get shot and killed by cops in the U.S. in much greater numbers than blacks do, but you never hear about those shootings. But when a black person gets shot by a cop, it's 24/7 media coverage, usually hysterical coverage, about how this proves what a raaaaaacist country this is, and how blacks are under attack and being hunted down and shot like dogs, and all the rest of that bullshit.

Blacks bitterly complain about the disparity in media attention in "missing white girl" cases, yet they never complain about the disparate media attention in cop shooting cases.

Parents are about to realize that the case law has been settled for years about once they consent to their kids crossing the threshold of the door to the school, the kids are legally under the custody of the educators and administrators.
These educators and administrators have been brainwashed and enabled since day one of college that they know what is best for our kids. They openly despise the parents. They should be terrified for their lives.

I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille. It got pretty gritty. I started to hear the word "Trump" in my sleep.

Then one day, I was just walking down the street when I heard a voice behind me say, "Reach for it, mister!" I spun around... and there I was, face to face with a six-year grad student. Well, I just threw my iPad down and walked away.

Little bastard shot me in the ass. So I limped to the nearest club, crawled inside a Courvoisier bottle... and I've been there ever since.

Yes. It is why I no longer care about policy arguments. If you want to have a policy disagreement that you work out - say "legal immigration {should|should not} be limited by quotas" - then you have to agree on the basics. You have to agree on things like nation-state government, borders as a sovereign requirement, supremacy of the population of citizens in decision-making, etc. If you can't agree on the core basics, then there is no room for a policy argument. You can't argue "there should be strict restrictions on immigration" with someone who rejects the concept of a border.

Political Conservatism is largely a figment of the imagination.

I can't really even think of a single political initiative or policy goal that was conservative in nature that was actually made a reality.

A one time "balancing" of the budget?
Some tax cuts sprinkled about over the last 40 years?
That's pretty much it.

The only administration that had as it's main thrust and goal to do "conservative" things was the last administration.

And we see how that turned out.

That was when they all sold out (for money) and told themselves it was not about overrunning the country with crime, low wages, and elements destructive to our communities. They had to find justification for taking the Chamber of commerce / Silicon Valley / liberal money viewpoint. NRO claimed it was to tamp down the riff raff and racist element. WSJ claimed it was good for the economy. Mostly they all agreed it was racist.

But anyone who spent time in middle class neighborhoods understood it was about crime, jobs, schools, taxes, and services.

But once they accepted that lie, they established who they were, and it was just a discussion about price.

148 Pretty much this. Not to mention the elephant in the room would be, mass killings in Democrat run cities.

I was pointing out to a friend that horror movies being set in the 'sticks are kind of silly.

He asked why and I pointed out that almost all murders in America happen in the cities.

The biggest danger a bunch of yankee backpackers have in the sticks is dying from exposure. Walk down the wrong street in Chicago though and you'll wish you only had to deal with Jason...

149 Understanding today's proggies is easy. They, and I mean each and every one of them, have rejected Our Lord, and their entire mindset is "You're not the boss of ME!" That is the sum total of their framework for living. They are the clear embodiment of an itch seeking a scratch, and urge seeking a hand job, so to speak.

That is their moral, ethical framework. They cannot understand ours. They have no frame of reference.

==========

Idea:

Movie of parallel narratives. Two brothers go on separate vacations at the same time, one to the mountains and the other to Chicago to do some sight-seeing. They both die horribly, but they explore their relationship with each other in their final moments as each lays dying, calling each other and knowing that no help will come in time.

There will be tears.

____

I can think of several political victories, but it's clear some objectives (like securing the border) are lost on purpose.

That problem really could be fixed over night if we really wanted to. You can even go back to Reagan for why it was never addressed and even encouraged.

Big business wanted cheap labor. America as we know it will end over some agribusiness getting to save a nickel on a head of lettuce.

Because you'd find out they were most likely killed bu their black boy friends or their black neighbor.
______________

Most of the "missing white girl" cases are also whites killed by other whites. Just like a "missing black girl" would almost always be somebody who was killed by another black.

People in these cases typically get killed by people they know -- spouses, boyfriends, friends, neighbors, etc. So they're almost always going to be of the same race, because people tend to hang out with people who are like them.

224 National Review canned Mark Steyn over a tepid gay joke from the Rat Pack / Bob Hope era that practically every liberal's grandparents would have laughed at and probably did. Mostly because his warnings about unchecked immigration didn't sit well with the GOP crowd who had the US Chamber of Commerce on speed dial and partly because National Review decided that teh ghey sexy was a new conservative value.

Don't even get me started on them running off John Derbyshire and present-day race relations.

I e-mailed Jonah Goldberg a couple of times about a column, and never heard squat back from him. He's a puny little whining quim.

I think that is the whole point of VDH being grounded and able to see clearly. He lives out there in normal land while everyone else at NR lives in DC. Victor knows what is going on and how ordinary people still work and feel while the others never did.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that Trump or DeSantis would have nobody in DC to appoint to work for him. Appoint from the regions.

DC should not be a permanent home for anybody, there should be complete change of inhabitants at least every four years if not every two. Nobody should be buying property there.

273 I think "National Review" was founded to get ideas into circulation. The target was never 'New York City based liberal intellectuals'. The target was politicians and businessmen whose political outlook remained protean and could be persuaded and persuade others. The target was also the residue of persuadable dissidents in academe. The Republican Party and the country club set suffered a programmatic and ideological confusion rather more severe then than now.

Hanson does not provide any insight in this interview into what makes the NR crowd tick. The pseudonymous Neo-Neocon, who is personally acquainted with Wm. Kristol, had to admit some years back that what was motivating him was to her a puzzle she could not solve. The description he offers sounds like Dan McLaughlin ("Baseball Crank"), but not Ramesh Ponnuru.

He's too polite to point something else out about the NR crowd, the Bulwark, the Dispatch, Ross Douthat &c. They're now financially dependent on liberal patrons. I don't think that was the case 10 years ago. (You could say George Will and David Frum are, but these two are too wealthy to be bought).

Back in the early 90s I had a sub but I soon discovered that I was not reading any of the pieces. I let it lapse because it was pointless. 282 Concerning VDB and NR, that reminds me of an old story told about the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s. In those days, they were really good, and they were managed by Joe McCarthy, who later managed the great Yankees teams in the late '20s and '30s. McCarthy was known as a martinet: his players had to behave themselves, and that included wearing coats and ties to meals during spring training. Well, during the off-season the Cubs traded for Rogers Hornsby, who was a free spirit: he didn't drink, but he did play the horses, and nobody had ever seen him wear a tie. On the first day of spring training, the sportswriters were wondering how McCarthy and Hornsby would get along; when McCarthy comes down for breakfast - and he's not wearing a tie, and he's not wearing a jacket. The sportswriters started kidding him about it, to which he replied, "Boys, any manager who can't get along with a .400 hitter is nuts!"

VDH is the intellectual equivalent of a .400 hitter. And NR's editors couldn't get along with him. Draw your own conclusions.

However, it's been interesting how lately he's been pulling stories from the some of the most hated areas of the non-progressive web and making them hot topics, such as the color revolution and J6 stuff w/Darren beattie an Julie Kelly, the CRT stuff with Christopher Rufo, as well as interviews with people like Curis Yarvin and Rose McGowan. He's exposing his audience to a lot of ideas and stories that would be otherwise completely unknown to them.

My husband once had to sit through a briefing on security measures against terrorism, and how retinal scanning was going to be introduced for high-security areas. Unfortunately, the lady giving the talk had a foreign accent, and "retinal" came out more like "rectal". This led to Dean coming up with lots of hilarious scenarios of trapping terrorists in a men's room stall, where a huge bright light would emerge from below the suspect as he sat, and a voice would chant soporifically, "Please insert paper in auto feeder." No two are alike, after all.

Concerning VDB and NR, that reminds me of an old story told about the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s. In those days, they were really good, and they were managed by Joe McCarthy, who later managed the great Yankees teams in the late '20s and '30s.

__________

Joe McCarthy also had to manage notable boozer Hack Wilson. One day he called Hack into his office. He got a glass of water and put a worm in it, which promptly swam about. Then he put a worm in a glass of whiskey, where it promptly died. "So what can you conclude from this?" McCarthy asked. Wilson replied, "If I drink enough I won't get worms."

I honestly have no idea what "Conservative" is supposed to mean sometimes, as we get bamboozled CONSTANTLY by shitty politicians who are supposedly conservative.

1) The Constitution. It's real and magnificent. Read it, use it, apply it always.
2) keep the Federal budget balanced, or close to it. We are a train wreck now, because spending is madly insane. It will ruin the country, sooner than you think. Oops, that already happened!
3) Read the 10th Amendment....AGAIN. IT has as much weight as any of the other parts of the Bill of Rights. But it is studiously ignored because it gets in the way of the corporatist oligarchy that has been foisted on all of us.
4) What we do policy-wise is up to the President and Congress, that's what they are elected to do. If I disagree with policy...well, there's the next election to try and fix that.

John Derbyshire's wife is ethnic Chinese. His kids are biracial. I don't think he was ever "racist". Some I trust more than others.
I also have know AA folks I wouldn't trust at all.
My son is married to an African American woman. My beloved grandson is mixed race.

I think a lot of African Americans are broadly misunderstood by White folks. I don't say that to be hostile, just I can get along with most people if they don't threaten me. I've been more "threatened" by White people (some I knew!) than by Black people. But as a white man, it can be a little itchy moving through a group of "young" black men, late at night.
Some years ago, I was at a function in Downtown Detroit, that was predominantly Black. Felt perfectly safe.

I mean, even Andrew freakin' Sullivan has come out stronger and more reasoned than NR re: stopping trans activism.

369 Some years ago, I was at a function in Downtown Detroit, that was predominantly Black. Felt perfectly safe.

It depends. I mean there are groups of white dudes I would be super nervous about being with, like meth dealing hicks from the hollars or the Lincoln Man Boy Love Association. Meanwhile, I went to a party full of guys from Sierra Leone (legal immigrants) and the only thing that frightened me was the excessively hot food.

You think Mexican food is hot. You think Thai food is hot. Then there's Africa hot.

382 50 NR likes to pretend the DOJ is about Justice, that the BLM/Antifa crowd are mostly peaceful organic social movements staffed by volunteers, that shooting baseball-playing Congressmen was a one-off, and nobody knows why the Vegas massacre happened. School Boards need protection from parent opinions. Citizens aren't allowed in the Capital, and nobody is a political prisoner in America. BigTech is our friend.

386 The problem with ejecting Derbyshire is that they had been quite tolerant of him when he published a piece in the "New English Review" trashing a book by Ramesh Ponnuru and savaging the Right-to-Life movement. Then when he publishes a piece in "Taki's" which consists mostly of an inventory of things prudent people navigating inner-city environments do (the exception being his gassing about Intelligent Well Socialized Blacks) and is at worst mildly disrespectful, he's cut from the masthead immediately. That tells you that Richard Lowry doesn't care about the sensibilities of readers of a sort thin on the ground where he was living in Manhattan.

Posted by: Art Deco at October 05, 2021 04:47 PM (1BrBu)

387 A couple of years later, Mark Steyn left the publication. Like Derbyshire, he was a contributor, not an employee. The occasion was a column where he noted that a mild joke uttered by Dean Martin on television ca. 1970 could no longer be uttered in public fora generally. This led to a public bust up with Jason Lee Steorts, the 'managing editor', who was permitted to cut Steyn from the list of contributors (after publishing an insipid and humorless complaint). I'm fascinated to know what Steorts has on Lowry that Lowry would allow him to cut the publication's most talented voice. NB, Steorts , Harvard '03, is a bachelor living in suburban Salt Lake City, telecommuting.

388 Only reason I haven't cancelled my subscription to NR yet is because they still run the occasional article by Joseph Epstein. Once they stop publishing him too, I'm outta there.

389 VDH is wrong and has been wrong, for years, because he's still approaching this from the frame of "there are bad eggs in the GOP", when the entire GOP leadership structure and nearly all of the supporting self-proclaimed professional punditry is made up of sellouts of varying types.

We didn't get here because Trump made Mean Tweets, or because the GOPe wants cocktail party invites; they fucking sellouts and traitors, and many of them have ALWAYS been sellouts and traitors.

It's always hard for people to admit they were conned; we got conned. You see his reluctance in the "we condemn the riot, but.." Bullshit. The only thing wrong with that riot is that the venue and timing was a setup. He's desperately hanging onto a bunch of schoolhouse rock civics nonsense and refusing to address reality.
