Report: FaceBook User Data "Scraped"; 1.5 Billion Users' Personal Information Now Being Sold on Hacker Sites
Update: the article clarifies that this does not have anything to do with FaceBook being down. Though... I wonder if they mean this hack did not directly cause the outage -- while leaving open the possibility that FaceBook's efforts to improve security and trace the hack are causing the outages.The private and personal information of over 1.5 billion Facebook users is being sold on a popular hacking-related forum, potentially enabling cybercriminals and unscrupulous advertisers to target Internet users globally. This constitutes the biggest and most significant Facebook data dump to date. It is seemingly unrelated to an earlier 2021 Facebook data dump, where 500 million users were affected. Highlights: Data scrapers are selling sensitive personal data on 1.5 billion Facebook users. Data contains users’: name, email, phone number, location, gender, and user ID. Data appears to be authentic. Personal data obtained through web scraping. Data can be utilized for phishing and account takeover attacks. Sold data claimed to be new from 2021.

If they saw user data being copied off at tremendous volume (and they may have - it should be easy to spot in a good monitoring system), then they may have panicked and thrown a switch to cut it off and accidentally fucked up everything. I will be hugely amused if that's what happened.

What I would like to know - and we never will - is if it is only active users, or also inactive and canceled users. There are those three states. If you use Facebook, you're an active user. If you have an account but it's been idle for too long, it's inactive. If you close it, it's closed but never - ever - gone. It will be an interesting liability question if it includes closed accounts.

It has never made any sense to me. I was in college when Facebook hit the scene. I signed up because, practically overnight, it became the *only* way to find out about stuff like parties and events. It was drastic and fast. The student union became irrelevant and Facebook is where it all was.
I made a profile, and it was minimal. It had my school E-Mail address (mandatory) and name (mandatory) and nothing else. No relationship status, no address, no phone number, nothing. I used to get asked why I didn't have any information in my Facebook. I would reply with, "would you put your name, address, telephone number and girlfriend's name up on a billboard? No? That's why I don't put any of that on Facebook."
They looked at me like I had two heads. I didn't get them, they didn't get me. But even without this data theft, Facebook is - and always has been - a privacy nightmare.

Yup, but those aren't "users" - they're just data points. And Zuckerberg lied his ass off to Congress when he said, in plain language, that if you're not a Facebook user and didn't agree to their terms of service then you're not tracked and targeted by them and they don't have a dossier on you.
They do it through social media buttons. There are other ways, but that's a *huge* one. That Facebook (or Twitter or whatever) icon on every page you go to tracks you. The first time you see the button, you get a cookie with a unique identifier. That unique identifier is sent back every other time the button is observed. Even if you don't have an account and they can't link it to a logged-in user, they have a massive dossier on you.

Back in the day, maybe. Nowadays that isn't much of a risk since everything has enough stored charge to park and head crashes are super rare.
But everything going down hard *sucks* and takes a monumental effort and tremendous amounts of time to recover and get back online. Plus state changes + moving parts == risk. There's always the chance that the body at rest won't want to get into motion again.

Generally, no. Facebook is big enough that its DNS servers are probably run by Facebook.
Even my dinky site, the DNS servers are managed by the same hosting provider that I use for web (and email) hosting. The DNS entries are managed by me, using an app at the domain provider.
If my hosting provider went down, I could still go to the domain provider and change my DNS servers to someone else and re-upload my pages to the someone else’s servers. Facebook is probably far too complicated for something as simple as that.
If someone hacked my domain account and deleted my domain names, that would really suck. It would be difficult to fix and would take days at best.

That, and it because an organization will host its own DNS servers, and routing tables... it would be very easy to 'roll back' any changes.
In fact if they are using a Microsoft infrastructure the DNS rolls into Active Directory, which means every Domain server would have to be compromised. Same with other security configurations.
But if you ever want to blow up a Microsoft infrastructure? Just go to first created Domain controller, which is by default the schema master... and change the schema. Changes replicate... and... boom.
Used to show students this in a Network Engineering Lab.

Right, probably. But in that case: whodunnit? They, themselves? That seems likely, since as was pointed out above, Facebook owns a ton of DNS infrastructure. If that's the case, why? I am desperately hoping that my wild ass guess/dream-casting in 25 is what happened...

DNS is designed to self replicate downhill from root servers. You take the dns out of the right place and it will naturally get removed all over. Or I could be full of it.

Yes and no.
The record that is key here is the NS record that tells the world where to look for your DNS servers. Their DNS servers are probably still up and running and have the data, but the NS record is gone.
And it has expired from all the caches. If they put the NS record on some TLD right now it should propagate pretty quickly. This has not been done.
I was snarking when I said that the DOJ/FBI heard they were behind 1/6 on 60 Minutes and ordered CyberCommand to strike. That's not...implausible.

I'm not familiar with FB's hosting infrastructure but I'm willing to bet that its geometrically more complex than my dinky little 50 data node lake that I have to play with at work.
When ours "goes down" in that the cluster responsible for the map reducing dies, its "have fun boys, see you tomorrow morning... maybe."
