Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

When pets start drinking unusual amounts of water it usually means bad things. Not this time.

Poppy Anderson was concerned for her beloved cat, Brioche, when he wouldn’t stop drinking water.

The 18-year-old owner was worried her 10-year-old kitty was suffering from kidney failure – and even forked out £200 in vet fees to check up on him.

But Brioche’s excessive thirst was actually down to a far less serious, and pretty hilarious, reason.

The moggy had been munching on chilli flakes in the kitchen.

The True Story Of Balto, A Husky Who Helped Save An Entire Alaskan Town From Death

Learn how a "scrub dog" named Balto rose to the occasion and saved the town of Nome during the Great Race of Mercy in the winter of 1925.
In 1925, residents of the small town of Nome, Alaska faced a potentially fatal epidemic and very few options to save them from death. Multiple teams of sled dogs came to their rescue, and residents continue to celebrate one unlikely hero to this day.

Meet The PetMorons

gunnerdog.jpg

I lurk, and occasionally comment under the name "Inventive". Got a lot of dogs and cats and goats, but here's my dog.

His name is Gunner, we think GSD/Lab mutt but who knows... He endured three years of city living till he found his true calling as a farm dog. He keeps the homestead free of raccoons and possums (racked up quite the score over these last four years), hates vultures and geese, and puts up begrudgingly with the children.

Don't we all put up with children begrudgingly? Oh lighten up everyone, I'm kidding. Not only is he handsome, he's handy too. Thanks for your contribution today.

Farmcat is back to living on our patio after a monthlong disappearance. I guess he figured out our food is better. Below is Cutie the 7 year old dilute tortoiseshell supervising some renovations. Of course she has to lay where the paint spilled. - Cat Ass Trophy

We are happy to hear that your adventurer Farmcat is back. Looks like Cutie is a spoiled little kitteh. Thanks for sharing today.

My wife lets me share her dogs. I am, however, a third fiddle in Liath’s hierarchy of humans. Here she is ,as is common, despairing five minutes after mom leaves.

Thanks for the pet thread. A badly needed palate cleanser after a week of outrageousness. - Regards, Rider In The Sky

Well that certainly nice of your spousal unit to share the doggeh with you. Liath looks like she has a terribly uncomfortable life. Thanks for reaching out today.

Hi MisHum! We got Merlin after we lost our bestest boy in April. Merlin is now 5 mos and here's a studio portrait for Pet Thread consideration. He may be re-thinking being part of a photographer's household! - Karen

I'm just spitballing here, but.....He'll be fine with the photography if you leave the hats off. Adorable photo. Thank you for sharing today.

This is a photo of Heidi, whose person told me it was hard to get good pix of black dogs.
Photo was taken w an iPhone 11 Pro- a great camera with some telephone capabilities.
Miss Heidi was happy to pose after a taste of bacon.
She’s a sweet dog, about 6 yrs old and her person reports she’s a great travel companion.
Love the pets postings and thought you might give Miss Heidi some air time.

LastWatch (1).jpg

My constant companion over the last decade crossed over the Rainbow Bridge today. Lillie had been in the pet thread previously, with a picture of her lounging on the couch waiting for a belly rub. Attached is a photo I took this morning of her in her favorite place: at one of the dining room windows facing the street where she would stand watch and alert me to any squirrels, deliveries, or other dogs being walked. This was her last watch before I had to take her to the vet to see about treating a ruptured tumor. Sadly, the vet told me she wouldn't survive the surgery and I had to let her go. - bert

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It certainly looks like Lillie enjoyed a great life while she was with you. May your memories be sweet ones.

Thank you all who submitted links or stories about their pets. You guys and gals make this thread work.

Miss Dot (Ch. Soyara's Crowning Glory) has left us. No, not that way. She's being lent to a couple in California to be bred. They bear the cost of breeding and whelping and we get back Dot (of course) and the best male puppy.

We're in Texas, they're in California and we're making the transfer in New Jersey. Go figure.

15 Purry and Della went to the vet yesterday to be neutered/spayed. As is usual when prepping for surgery, they had no food after midnight.

In the morning, they galloped ahead of me to the kitchen, anticipating breakfast. Poor things! Instead, they were bundled into the carrier.

So when I picked them up in the afternoon, I expected they would be hungry. I was warned to give them less food than usual, since it might upset their stomachs. So I only gave them a bit. Della was still pretty loopy, and kept wandering from her bowl and circling around one of the chairs. I figured, well, cats always want to walk it off.

I went outside to have a cig and do some reading. Della was lying on the kitchen floor by the sink, playing with the foam kitchen mat.

But when I came in, I discovered that she'd chewed off 3" of the corner of it, and little pieces of the mat were scattered around her. I don't think she ate any of it, but I gave them both more food. They were like zombies looking for brains, checking all the food dishes. They totally pigged out. I figured that maybe they'd puke, but I wasn't going to have them eating kitchen mats!

26 Afternoon, all,

Sorry to hear about those companions who've crossed the Bridge. No doubt when I arrive, there'll be discussions. "Back off, black cat, he's my human!" "Put a mouse in it, Fat Boy, he's mine!"

We just took Chekov the Senior Cat (aka The Codger) up the street to the Pet Blessing at Miss Linda's church. He was in his carrier, of course, amid a slew of dogs of all sizes, including the big all-black German Shepherd who belongs to the priest. One family brought 2 short-haired cats, and one woman, get this, brought the class hamster from her kid's school! She complained the rodent was trying to bite her through the cage bars.

Loves fetch more than life itself. The transition has not been without its bumps, but she is a jewel for a rescue dog.

We were told she was a retriever mix, but we have thought she was a toller since we first saw her picture. Our trainer is more convinced than we are that that's what she is. Awaiting DNA results to find out.

40 Yay, pet thread! Wonderful pix as always. "Dog gets a new home and a pet boy" is a great shot.

Currently on the road, so, much missing our three feline friends. SonM and Daughter have been taking care of them.

Charlie the golden boy always goes up to meet them when they visit. Spirit, the old gray lady, is not so quick, but likes to be picked up and petted and appreciates some lap time. Ony, the middle-aged black furball always runs and hides when they drive up. However, Daughter reports, Ony let Daughter glimpse her yesterday, before disappearing. Maybe Ony is mellowing. Probably not.

Spirit has become finicky about eating - becoming worrisomely skinny - and her fur has thinned. However, Milady Jo figured out Spirit will eat better if she gets the little packets of mostly-gravy food, and she seems to have added a little weight, and maybe is growing in her winter coat. She is so old! Just hope she is still there when we get home.

After my sweet Maine Coon runt Dorkie Dork had her right rear leg amputated some years ago (which she never let stop her, what an amazing kitteh), my ex got her a stroller much like the one in the photo. They both loved going out for strolls. I have some pics somewhere and will dig them up for next weekend.

Sorry to hear about euthanizing pets. It's such a hard thing, emotionally, to do, and always, *always* educate yourself about the process. It's not as simple as the vet industry makes it out to be. They call it the best gift you can give your pet. If it's done right; if it's done wrong, it becomes the German version of gift, which translates in English to "poison".

The 2020 Iditarod champion dogs were from Norway and got stuck in AK for a while until they could get flown out. And it was one hell of a ride on a vintage Douglas DC-6 final flight as she was going to a museum in Norway.

69 Pet thread is welcome as always. Sorry for the losses, and love all the pics and stories.

My "little" Rufus kitten is nearly as big as my grown male tabby, and they are buds. Rufus is doing well on the harness and lead. Have never done a cat that way before. But the lead is 50 feet, and he can go a long way in the back yard with that, anchored to a shepherd-hook pole. I always watch to untangle him here and there. Sometimes I let him off the lead so he and Linus can romp. Should be fun when the leaves start whirling down.

Peace to you.

86 Update: Farmcat is now named "Ossie" and has joined the inside clan after a clean bill of health from the vet. He is one happy kitty now. He adores the kids. It is obvious he was an indoor pet at one time and was abandoned. Probably by the previous owners if I judge their character correctly.

88 So I roll up to the light on my way to the store about an hour ago. Its a long light and of course I just missed it.
Two cars in front of me is a truck with a dog sticking its head out. It barks once and jumps out. Fortunately no traffic. It ambles over to the side of the road, take s whiz and ambles back to the truck waiting patiently for the driver to open the door and let him back in.
Every other driver is in stitches.
Owner not happy.

89 Bogie is getting better adjusted to my brief departures, today there were two or three whimpers and no barks. He's understanding that I will return and there's no need to be crazy.

98 The biggest cat I've ever seen (from the top and behind, he looks like a dog), a handsome orange top/white bottom guy I named "Creamy" (from "Creamsickle") comes by the backyard a couple of times a week. He's not fat at all and he's timid (so, feral) but he's huge. I've now gotten him to come up and eat treats from my fingers. He won't let me pet him unless he's eating but I'm very patient with cats. And patience with cats can really pay off, as noted above. I'll send in a pic of Creamy next week.

Posted by: SFGoth at October 02, 2021 04:04 PM (KAi1n)

99 bert -- So sorry to read about Lillie. It is so heart wrenching to take a critter to the vet, assuming the vet will shake a rattle, wave a few beads, and your critter will come home, only to discover there aren't enough beads or rattles in the entire universe.

102 There were a lot of different breeds of dogs at the Pet Blessing this afternoon. One little Pomeranian, I guess, possibly still a puppy, squeaked like a squeeze toy instead of barking. The priest's big all-black German shepherd was there, and I saw at least one pug, a couple of big Great Dane-looking beasts, and a little white poodle (leashed to a guy who looked like he should be working on a farm in the Depression) who wanted to investigate Chekov's carrier.

I thought the whole thing would take an hour or more, that we'd have to wait in line, etc. Istead the priest started right at 2 pm, read off a general blessing, then went around to each animal and did a specific blessing. We were early on, and were done very quickly.

104 One of those haunting memories that sticks to you: A couple years ago I was sitting for a very long time in a vet's waiting room with my daughter's cat. From one of the back doors, an Asian man comes rushing out, holding a collar and a leash. His eyes were blood red and tears were streaming down his face. Behind him came his wife and two teenage kids, all visibly stricken as they walked out the front door. I never saw the dog. And to this day I think about this family and their great loss and hope they have recovered and have adopted another dog.

106 Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor, those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.

His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

112 Balto's body is stuffed and on display at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and there are statues of Balto and Togo by the wolf enclosure at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, along with a short version of their story and a dog harness. Balto and his sled pack were rescued by a group effort of the citizens of Cleveland, after a Cleveland business man found them in poor condition on the vaudeville circuit. Enough money was raised to buy the dogs, they were given a parade in downtown Cleveland, and lived out the rest of their lives at the zoo.

I laidout on our lawn back in January with Moura, our PWD, and recorded myself sharing stories with her about humorous incidents from her life with us. That was my way of saying goodbye; for her it was just one more time for "hanging with Dad". We put her down from melanoma that had moved into her lymphatic system one hour after I wrapped up recording.

I am so glad that I took the time to do that.

When I got back from the vet where I'd had to put Arizona the big Maine Coon mix to sleep at last, the people upstairs kept walking around so noisily I wanted to throw something at their windows and scream at them to be respectful. I didn't.

For the next month or two I attended some of those pet loss support meetings you always see listed at vet offices. Never did that with any cat before, or since. Maybe it's me. Maybe it was that Arizona was with me the longest of any cat I'd ever known, 16.5 years.

120 Cat Ass Trophy: The little Wicked Witch of the West was supposedly a stray when she was scooped up by the Humane Society. She had a litter of kittens, so the Humane Society fostered her out until the kittens were weaned. There is absolutely no chance in the world she was ever feral. Somebody dumped her because they didn't want kittens or she managed to get lost somehow. I had a feral born cat for thirteen years. The Wicked Witch doesn't exhibit any of Penny's actions or reactions.
