The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

I had a church meeting last night, so I didn't have much time afterwards, so this rant is going to be quick.

Today I got to thinking about us leaving all of that military hardware behind in Afghanistan, how bad is it, really?

The $85 billion price tag is, of course, nothing to sneeze at, and it's irritating to see footage of bearded barbarians strutting around in U.S. camo fatigues and brandishing our weapons, but how long is that stuff going to last? Helicopters are high maintenance, right? I'm thinking they won't be flying for very long.

How difficult would it be for the Taliban to get the necessary spare parts? Even for the ground vehicles like the MRAPS, how long are they going to last?

According to this USA Today article:

"The helicopters are the most expensive item, but the ability of the Taliban to operate and maintain them without outside help is modest," Thompson said. "The absence of U.S. logistical support will lead to a steady decay in the state of the residual Afghan military arsenal. Even small arms will gradually become unusable if not properly maintained. MRAPs are real gas-guzzlers, so their value in a country where fuel supplies are scarce and terrorist attacks have largely ceased is doubtful."

I don't know how much of this is the DoD putting a happy face on a humiliating disaster, but maybe some of you Smart Military Morons would be able to help out with some answers here.

In fact, I'm thinking this didn't happen by accident. Naturally this is speculatio, but it's not hard to believe that somebody, somewhere is profiting from this debacle. All the stuff we lost is going to have to be replenished and restocked and it might be interesting to trace where the money is going and whose pocket it's going to end up in.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com.

Prayer Requests:

8/2 – She Hobbit and her young children need prayers on the passing of her husband, Kate Winslet’s Boobs. He succumbed to a lengthy struggle with kidney cancer over the weekend.

8/11 – Grannysaurus Rex requests prayers for her sister-in-law’s father, who has gone into hospice for lung cancer. Please pray for a peaceful passing and God’s grace and comfort for his family, friends, and medical staff.

8/16 – Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) asks for prayers for his mother, who is undergoing a (hopefully minor) surgery next week.

8/16 – Joe Mama sends his thanks for all the prayers. He is on the mend; his blood clots are slowly dissolving.

8/20 – Pooky’s Girl sends thanks that she has received preliminary approval for the VA Caregiver Program, so she can cut back her hours at work while she takes care of Pooky full-time. They have lots of appointments in the next month as different specialists try to tackle his mental and hormonal problems, so prayers would be appreciated as they try to find viable solutions.

8/25 – Eeyore mood requests prayers for a friend’s grandson, whose child was murdered by the child’s mother’s boyfriend.

8/30 – Prayers are requested for strength and healing for Pug Mahon’s family, at the passing of his father Keith.

9/2 – Ozborn requests prayer for his son, toddler A., who is battling RSV.

9/7 – Notsothoreau asks for prayers for her co-worker and his family. His grandmother is dying. May she pass calmly and the family be comforted for their loss.

For Healing:

8/4 – IllTemperedCur requests prayers for his mom’s husband, Jan. He is going through chemo right now for stage 4 lung cancer. They are keeping him as cheerful as possible, but any prayers from the Horde would be appreciated.

8/10 – Katya, the designated driver, sends an update on her cancer treatments and continuing care. She is struggling with lymphedema now. It’s getting very painful, and her arm is beginning to swell. It’s causing more pain than any other aspect of the cancer. Please pray for relief.

8/21 – Tonypete asks for prayers for a previous work pal, Ryan. Ryan suffered a massive toke on 8/12 and has been in the ICU since then. He is in pretty bad shape but is fighting hard to hold on. He is a single parent of two young kids, and only 43 years old.

8/22 – Hrothgar asks for prayers for Emma, a 16-year-old girl who apparently had a stroke. Her condition is still being evaluated, and she has been medevaced to the Children’s Hospital in Baltimore.
9/5 Update – The Children’s Hospital has determined the primary issue she was a very unusual congenital birth defect which had never before evidenced itself, as she appeared to be a healthy, active teenager. The medical team is convinced that she will be able to recover fully, but has a tough year ahead with several critical surgeries and extensive rehab. The important thing is that she will have years ahead to love and be loved by her family. So please continue to pray for Emma and her full recovery, plus prayers for her family and the skill of her surgical and rehab teams.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com.

Romans 8:26-27:
[26] In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. [27] And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her.

Friday Who Dis: In a previous rant thread, somebody mentioned Marilyn Monroe's body double and I thought she might make a good 'who dis' candidate. Turns out MM had several body doubles, and photos are hard to find. Except for Greta Thyssen, who was MM's double in Bus Stop. But reading between the lines of her imdb bio, you can get the impression that her acting talent was far less impressive than her bustline. She did a few B movies, including Journey to the Seventh Planet with Mr. Shirley Temple, John Agar. Even though the marriage only lasted 5 years. He soon remarried and that marriage lasted until she passed, 50 years later. About appearing in crappy B movies, he said "a lot of the pictures I made were not released -- they escaped."

There will be money sluicing around for *years* as a result of this. Tax money and debt going to the military manufacturers for new equipment. Chinese, Russian and Iranian money going to the Taliban for the equipment. American money sent to the Afghanistan for "international aid" that will flow to NGOs and military contractors to maintain the equipment that the Taliban keeps.

It's going to be a lot like the crazy arms dealing and money spigots and corruption that happened with the fall of the USSR, albeit at a smaller scale. We're going to pay four times by my reckoning. First, for the stuff in the first place. Second, through "international aid." Third, to replace the stuff. Fourth, in non-monetary terms when it is used for intelligence purposes by our enemies.

Awesome. Top-flight work.

91 This is not a fun comment to write, but honestly my wife asked last night "how many people do you think know about this?" My work deals a lot with global markets; we'd been talking about movies, and she was straight up "no way, nah-uh" about the Chinese film market overtaking Hollywood. A light bulb went off and I realized she was thinking of China as 1990 Beijing.
The Chinese leadership is seriously evil. Our leadership is evil, degenerate, and incompetent. Now, this footage is not all of China; it is not even most of China. And the Chinese and their culture have some serious defects. But you are not going to find ANYWHERE in the US like this anymore, and very few places like it in the West in general as we are buried under bums, crime, woke bullshit, and inept self-serving totalitarianism clumsily wrapped in COVID excuses.

129 The value of our military equipment left behind is grossly understated for reasons beyond practical military use. Irrespective of how much was "disabled", a lot of that equipment is being shipped out for reverse engineering by enemies like China. It's also being studied for weaknesses. One "advantage" of war is the knowledge gained in producing things like an MRAP. It becomes engineered to defeat likely battlefield threats, which is invaluable to survival. We've now given away all that experience and technology to the enemy. Ditto some of the systems left behind for explosive detection. The enemy will now study that to defeat the system and create their own versions. I give the Chinese a year or so before they're selling their own version of our MRAP/systems to hostile nations, maybe even people we sell them to today...

My business partner is in a VC firm, and went to China a couple of years ago to check out some business opportunities and view a manufacturing plant. He couldn't say enough about it. Everything is new, clean and shiny. It goes on and on and on. Probably how some felt about Manhattan in the 50's - at least parts. Just like it's hard to believe how clean and beautiful SF was as recently as the 70's.

I think yesterday's "election" [cough, cough] really drove the last nail. I gotta get out of here and enjoy my last days somewhere semi-sane. Somewhere I can ignore the inevitable to some degree.

That is a big part of it. It is *new.* That initial investment pays huge dividends. New roads where there weren't roads. New buildings where there weren't buildings. New trains where there weren't trains. It is all awesome and high-tech (adjusting for what "high-tech" means for the era) and shiny and new.

It's when the infrastructure starts to age that things change. Replacing it maintains where you are, but doesn't grow much. You have to maintain it, but you don't do massive new builds because the ROI isn't there. It's one of the reasons infrastructure ages and gets a bit down-at-the-heels.

But the newness of China doesn't change the fact that we enabled it all.

Yeah, The corruption and incompetence plays a major role, too. The first-stage buildout of the interstate highway system took about ten years. It took three years to replace a pair of crumbling overpasses where I used to live.

Part of the problem is that - well before the current era of open lying and fraud - infrastructure programs were really just jobs programs in disguise. The road or bridge or power line was a side effect.

Yup. This and more. Whenever someone runs a successful major infrastructure construction experiment (like the T-REX reconstruction of the I-25 corridor through Denver), it is never repeated.

Some time ago, I made a comment about how "it couldn't be made today" doesn't just apply to things like movies. It applies to *everything.* We can't do it now. The Saint Louis Arch couldn't be done (no way to do it with current OSHA rules). The Brooklyn Bridge? Forget about it. Look at what happened with the New Bay Bridge. Oy vey. Throwing up factories to support a major war like happened in WWII? No chance. The environmental impact studies won't be done before we're defeated. Not to mention that we no longer have acre upon acre of old, obsolete tooling that can be repurposed. We have too much corruption, too much regulation, too little industrial base.

The time to get involved was 20 to 25 years ago, There was (maybe) a slim chance then to still effect the outcomes.

"Critical Theory" has been running in the background a long, long time. It is a munition, technically speaking. And way past time to do anything about it. "Getting involved" has been a false hope for decades, they wrote the book on brainwashing kids away from their parents and short circuiting any parental input. What needed to happen then isn't fit for polite discussion, pretty sure on that. It is remarkable that the people paying for it have no say whatsoever. That is some wicked shit right there.

To a point. That stuff is expensive. Housing is so expensive that a lot of people who don't already have a house won't be able to get one unless they make a radical relocation. Sometimes, perhaps often, the radical relocation makes sense - but housing in a lot of parts of the country is shockingly expensive, and way out of bounds when compared to incomes in the area.

Personal choices will always play a major role, but the housing market is also bonkers.

Germany had started two (2) major global conflicts, (depending on who you asked) and one notion that was given serious thought was returning it to a completely pastoral landscape, with no ability for industrial production. This was known as the "Morgenthau Plan" after one of the FDR cabinet members. I've often thought somebody must have dusted that plan off and applied it to the US or American landscape.

The ChiComs have been reverse-engineering high-tech US and Russian military equipment for decades. However, they consistently step on their dicks with the stuff, which is nowhere near as capable as the source designs. The most glaring deficiency is metallurgy, which they struggle to understand.

Plus, Chinese defense contractors can't help but cheat even their own country in order to squeeze out another .005% profit out of the contract. Which means shitty quality control.

Jet/jet turbine engines are the classic example. Compared to US and even Russian designs, they consistently have a woefully deficient power/weight ratio, and the service life is awful. When you have to pull an engine for overhaul at 60 hours rather than the Russians at 400 or the Americans at 1000+, it severely impacts your readiness.

They have doubled in price. They haven't doubled in payment, and interest rates are the main driver of that. The downside to that is that the required down payment grows right along with the inflated price, acting as a significant barrier to entry. If you don't have the down payment, you get to pay PMI and that will push up your carrying costs dramatically.

I think they used to have a hanging calendar too. I love mid-century modern as well. I was a young kid during that time period, so I just associate it with all good things from my early childhood. My dad still has a lot of his original furniture from those years, but much of it has been broken or disguarded too. I want that 3-lightbulb floor lamp, darnit! If I ever won the lottery, I'd do an entire big rec room with nothing but original mid-century modern.

The Night Vision systems, not just for soldiers but for drivers and pilots, the counter-SAM gear on the aircraft. The imaging systems on the aircraft and drones. Losing these systems will kill a hell of a lot of Americans in the next war.

449 They have doubled in price. They haven't doubled in payment, and interest rates are the main driver of that. The downside to that is that the required down payment grows right along with the inflated price, acting as a significant barrier to entry. If you don't have the down payment, you get to pay PMI and that will push up your carrying costs dramatically.

Military small arms are fairly rugged. I've got an M1 Garand built in 1944 that works flawlessly, it doesn't take much upkeep. That gradual timeline for weapons that aren't being used daily in fire-fights is decades....
Posted by: you're in hell the world ended at September 15, 2021 11:13 AM (mCFs3)"

This is where the military white-glove-clean overreaction came from, and why it's actually important to keep to a certain degree of cleanliness; the biggest killer of arms is putting them away in storage, sometimes in a hurry, with too much moisture-attracting carbon and not enough oil or corrosion inhibitors.

Don't keep things in the safe dirty, and you'll be able to cache them properly on short notice and expect them to last. And you WILL have to cache them - "when it's time to bury them, it's time to use them" is backwards. When it's time to use them, it's time to bury them - so those hunting you don't find it in your closet between ops, and then take you out back and shoot you.

The time is set by long-wave radio signals from the cesium-based atomic clocks. They are the master timekeeping source and they broadcast a powerful synchronization signal. Your clock tunes that frequency and sets itself periodically to remain in sync against the real atomic clock.

Then try another recipe. Foreigners don't have magic hands that can produce what no other human being can produce. If you practise and try repeatedly, you'll be able to cook anything you want.

I made Butter Chicken that tastes just like what they serve at the Bombay Palace. No wonder - it's from the Bombay Palace cookbook! We did this in our universities for 50 years or more, welcoming in the CCP to collect all our tech, Clintons helped by giving them access to top secret tech ... but that keeps the MIC money flowing "gotta keep ahead of China, need more funding".

WWV broadcasts the blonks in the shortwave spectrum "At the tone, it will be 2300 hours universal coordinated time" but the "Atomic clock" signal is a lot lower iirc, just above the AM band.

In fact the receiver is prone to a lot of interference or RFI, just like the AM band. If you've flourescent lights around and other crap producing signals it may be difficult for your clock to get a clean enough signal to update on.

unfortunately it seems to apply directly only to the Government. the Department of Health (i.e the government) "is barred from enforcing any requirement that employers deny religious exemptions from COVID-19 vaccination or that they revoke any exemptions employers already granted before the vaccine mandate issued"
a private employer can still apparently do what it wants. but expect some employers to join lawsuits to not pay fines and not require their employees to vaccinate. Ironically, on its face it seem that employees of the Government are better protected from this than are private employees...
this is a federal court (so not a NY issue but a US issue). it will of course be appealed. it may wind before SCOTUS

614 Much of the time was taken up with preparing the curry base, the various spice combos, and other assorted prep.

Same with Butter Chicken. It has a tomato sauce base (that's where all the butter goes) to which you then add more spices, leftover tandoori chicken or vegetables and cream. In the summer, when we have lots of tomatoes, I cook several batches of this sauce, then freeze or can it in 1-cup quantities. I just take a jar of the sauce out whenever we want Butter Chicken and that's 2/3 of the job right there.

648 Anyone remember the litany of horribles that were going to befall us 20 years ago, when Arab terrorists were getting their hands on anti-aircraft TOW missiles?

Didn't happen, in all likely because the Ay-rabs couldn't maintain them, let alone take down commercial aircraft with them.

Posted by: Noam Sayen at September 15, 2021 12:20 PM (fPFtn)

649 That is a big part of it.

Falling apart and crumbling, badly made, stuck in government hassles. They said there are lots of such places besides that one.

Especially since the usual fare would have been 'nothing'. By mid invasion, with massive dislocations, much of the country occupied, and any male they could find in the army food production was way, way down. Imported lend lease was a major part of the army's food, and part of the population running the industries moved out to the Urals and Siberia.

Theoretically all of that was supposed to be zeroed out prior to leaving, but what do you think the odds of that happening were? Somewhere between slim and none.
