Daily Tech News 10 September 2021

Top Story

  • Germany gotta Germ. (Washington Post)

Someone insulted a German politician on Twitter... So police raided his house looking for evidence.

Evidence of what? The insult is public; he called the sports minister for Hamburg a dick. What more evidence is there to gather?

If this sort of idiocy applied to the US or Australia you'd need more police than there are ants in the whole of Texas. Insulting politicians is the national pastime.

  • Meanwhile, as we worry about all our gadgets being made in China, that country is getting set for an economic implosion. (Washington Post)

Chairman Xi is fast rolling back the - let's not pretend they're reforms, the fascism of his recent predecessors - and going right back to communism. I predict famines making a regular reappearance within the decade. China can't feed itself and its government is only making the situation worse.

  • Taiwan is paying attention and just launched the first of a new class of ship designed to take out aircraft carriers. (Asia Times)

Small, fast, and relatively cheap, the new corvettes are loaded with anti-aircraft, anti-ship, and medium-range supersonic cruise missiles, as well as torpedoes.

Tech News

  • Back to regular tech stuff, never click the enable editing button. (Bleeping Computer)

A bug in Internet Explorer lets a sneaky document take over your computer.

  • Oh, and if you are running containers on Azure cloud and received a Service Health Notification you can start worrying now. (Bleeping Computer)

A bug let other users' containers steal credentials from your containers and use that to break into your system and do, basically, whatever they wanted.

Remember, there is no cloud, there's just computers run by idiots.

  • Speaking of which, you can't buy a Microsoft Visio subscription as a regular user. You have to first set up a corporate account with Microsoft. So yes, I now have two accounts, which I'm sure is going to make my life easier.

  • Michael Freedman proved the four-dimensional Poincaré conjecture back in 1981 but no-one remembers how. (Quanta)

It's a very complicated proof and the published paper isn't entirely complete, so Freedman sat down with other mathematicians and took them through the proof in detail until they were satisfied. He won the Fields Medal for his work, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Freedman was 30 when he published his proof. Now he's 70, and the colleagues who understood his proof are mostly either retired or dead. So a new generation of mathematicians has got together to write a book about it before there's no-one left alive who understands how the proof works.

  • Want something faster than an SD Card in your laptop? SD Express is almost here. (AnandTech)

SD Express uses the PCI Express interface - either 1 or 2 lanes of PCIe 3.0. That means it can potentially approach 2GB per second. The reference device tested here has 1 lane and runs at up to 890MBps. though sustained sequential writes are a lot slower.

14 Mornin', all,

Just realized after today's shave that I've used teh same Personna blade since *last* Wednesday, something like 7-8 times. This last shave was just fine, but I normally go only 2-4 shaves on one blade. Shows how good the brand is. No more Gillette stuff for me (thanks to that anti-male ad campaign a couple of years ago). I chambered a new Personna and am ready for a new shave.

17 Tech question.
I backup my and my wife's computer every 2 weeks. Have done this for almost 10 years, ever since the hard drive on one crashed and burned.

I have been using a 500 GB portable drive to do this. I've noticed it's taking a little longer to perform this. Would it be better to get a SSD drive to do this instead?

Other then a little more on price, which isn't near as much as it was 10 years ago, is there a downside to SSD drives?

28 This morning, after we walk in the nearby park for the last time and absorb some breakfast, Miss Linda and I will pack the cats and the car and head down to Hattiesburg, our staging area for the Return to the Land of Sweat and Alligators. Our plan: Saturday am, buy some groceries, roll down and see if the power is on (my apt. office says the whole complex is powered up), and if our A/C works. If so, we'll dump the old fridge food, install the new, and head back up to H. Sunday we'll come back down. If the A/Cis damaged, however, back we go. We'll be close enough to check every day or so.

I'm already planning what gear I will use for my first shave there, and what pipe & tobacco I'll relax with. Hey, you take yer pleasures where ya can find 'em.

Thank you, sir. It's just the way I narrate it that makes it sound easy. But this event is not like Katrina, and in fact my place was not damaged in that either. The city, surprisingly (they predicted weeks before the power was back), is recovering, as is my employer. They just moved the on-site return to work date up to the 20th. If I have power and A/C, that should not be a problem -- there are open grocery stores and gas stations. Though I will gas up as often as possible in MS in case getting fuel in Da Swamp requires waiting in line.

Biden may issue the EO directing OSHA to write the Vax mandates but I believe they will never actually write the rules and will rely on fear to get compliance.

Once they write the rule, they will be sued and lose because they are exempting the USPS from the mandates, that's half a million people exempted.

There are also no mandates to vaccinate illegals or refugees, so the law shouid fail from many factors.

This just further illustrates the depravity of the Junta.

The place is a pesthole, and without modern conveniences would be far worse. I grew up without air in our place in the Quarter until I was 12, and I had no air at school until I got to college. That's how America is taking down other countries. It's not working in China because they have adults in charge that prevent our propaganda efforts.

Since the CIA mind-virus never took root, China is doing fine.

231 I'm still trying to deal with a variant of the Visio-licensing problem.

If you want to use MS Project, you must buy the corporate version. If you want to produce files that you can save, store, put on a disk/thumb drive, or whatever, you cannot use any of the cloud enabled versions of Office. The single user version is "cloud only", meaning it stores all projects in a public database in the sky.

If you use MS Project to plan and compare work with other people, it is essential to be able to share your plans. If you use it to price work you plan to do with other programmers, and print it for a potential client, the same. If you do not trust the MS people to not steal your plan in the cloud, you must use the version that is not in the cloud. If you are reviewing someone else's plan under an NDA, its important not to use the cloud version.

This all means you must get a license that is not only cloud-free, but you must change your multi-system licensing for the rest of the MS stack word, excel, powerpoint) so it cannot use the cloud, even one-drive.

And then your Outlook will never work properly again.

257 242 What percentage of people choosing to quit rather than get the shot would it take to wreak havoc? It's an interesting problem, because it depends on who quits. If the wrong people quit, 3%-5% would probably fuck up the organization pretty badly. If the right people quit, you can probably take a 25% hit.

Laundering the mandate through businesses is a dangerous game. At least, I hope it is.

I won't quit. They'll have to fire me which will likely happen quickly since I won't comply with either the vax or weekly testing bullshit particularly since I don't even work on-site. Meh, I'm a straight white anti-communist guy so the gubmint won't miss me.

Right, fired or quit is the same difference to production. And the government won't miss you, but your employer might. Price's law is a bitch. If the wrong people refuse to submit, it might end up being a serious problem even if it's not that many people.

Oh, the businesses - especially the corps with 1000 or more people - won't object in the slightest. The employees might, though. And if they quit or get fired, the businesses might end up in a lot of trouble. That's what I meant by my statement. Not that the businesses would refuse to comply (they obviously won't), but that they might rue the day they did.

266 I'm interested in seeing healthcare workers fired. There was some video floating around a couple of weeks ago that was very thought provoking. There are literally irreplaceable employees in that system. Low-level equipment operators that keep the patients alive so that the million dollar surgeons can do their jobs.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

267 In the plan, in respect to boosters, they're clearly getting out ahead of the FDA and the CDC

Biden very clearly stated that the timing etc on the boosters will be ENTIRELY up to the super smart scientists at the FDA and CDC and they will scientifically use science to make their decisions.

So those unelected bureaucrats will rule. If they rule you go to the camps? Well, off to the camps, science denier.

268 We have therapeutic regimens that work.
We have vaccines that either don't or don't work for very long.

They are pushing the latter and disavowing the former. Whatever the motivation, this is the reality. And while there can be many reasons for this, there can be only one root cause: evil.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 10, 2021 06:55 AM (3p5uk)

269 The tipping point was always gonna be when they start interfering with people's livelihoods. Fucking about with masks and lockdowns is a massive nuisance, but I'm not gonna starve. Americans are a supremely forbearing crowd.

But you start fucking with people's ability actually to survive? No job even possible, can't go to grocery store *at all*, etc.... things will get ugly quick.

You can rest assured that quitting or getting fired for not getting vaccinated will deny you unemployment. I don't know how many people REALLY have the stomach or deep pockets to walk away from their paychecks.

279 Taiwan needs Tactical Nukes.
I know the idea is scary but that and Chemical/Biologicals are the only real safe guard against attack.
If the Chinese communist decide to nuke Taiwan they win nothing and if the exchange nukes them back they lose something that won't grow back.
The same can be said about South Korea, Japan and the Philippines.
The US cannot/will not protect them.
