How much did the average US taxpayer pay for the military equipment abandoned in Afghanistan?
[TNDeplorable]

Most reports say that we abandoned $85 billion in equipment. According to the IRS, in 2020 there were 150 million personal tax returns filed. The simple math on that (wait, no one said there would be math!) is that 85 billion divided by 150 million is $567. That doesn’t sound too bad. It’s less than my booze budget for the month. But let’s dig deeper. Caution – more math ahead, but I will be rounding to simple numbers. Some of my assumptions are SWAGs, so no need to take it to the penny.

Let’s look at the numerator of $85 billion. Every report I have seen describes this as the cost of the equipment. Some questions:

1. How much did it cost to ship all that stuff there?
2. What about spare parts and the cost of third part maintenance contractors?
3. How much did it cost to move that equipment (and contractors) around the country to where it was needed?
4. What about the 10% for the “Big Guy”? In this case, the big guys were Afghani politicians and a bunch of their minions, tribal chieftains, and who knows who else was on the gravy train.

I’m going to assume that all that stuff is another $15 billion. Now we have a nice round number of $100 billion.

How about the denominator? There is no way that all those 150 million returns actually paid taxes. Back in 2012, Mittens said that 47% of Americans were getting a free ride. He didn’t even mention illegals. There is no data about this on the IRS website, but there was a recent report that 63% of filers owed no taxes (and probably got money back to boot). So only 37% of returns filed actually paid something. 37% of 150 million is 55.5 million filers who paid. $100 billion divided by 55.5 million comes out to be $1,800 and change.

But wait! It gets better. According to the IRS, the top 50% of wage earners pay approximately 95% of all taxes. So, 95% of $100 Billion is $95 Billion. 50% of 55.5 million filers is 27.75 million filers. $95 billion divided by 27.75 million come out $3,400 and change. The median annual US income in 2020 was $68,400. Don’t you feel better about that $3,400 now? That’s almost six months of my booze budget!

11 Trump sucked when it came to being a fiscal conservative, but he was dead on pointing out the trillions we've wasted on dumb wars and foreign intervention.

You could almost make the case that a Democrat wanting to spend more on (insert dumb domestic program here) makes way more sense than some $750 million dollar embassy (real number for Iraq embassy) that a Bush Republican insisted we needed for our security.

30 A better way of looking at this is comparing the war to the Chinese belt and road program. They spent less that one trillion (in loans) to buy up ports, infrastructure, utilities, mines, etc. all over the world.

In the process, they built up the chinese construction industry and gained permanent access to resources and markets. And it was loans, so they expect to get a return on that investment in the form of repayment, or usage fees if they take over the properties.

40 It gets worse. The Taliban is providing that equipment to all of our enemies. There are pictures of equipment crossing the Iranian border. They've also already provided some of it to China for reverse engineering. They left things like radios (which they "disabled") in the C-130. That will also be reverse engineered and used against us. That's before we get to explosive detection units that will now be used to defeat us in the future.

Forget about using it against us. A lot of it has a shelf life. But make no mistake, this is the most significant loss of military equipment in our history.

52 Honestly I don't care so much about the welfare to Lochheed Martin and Raytheon and their employees with all that military spending. I'd be fine if we had spent another billion to drop a small nuclear bomb and destroy every helicopter and tank we *had* to leave behind after clustering them all in one spot.

But turning all that hardware over to terrorists. I can't even stand to think about it, I get so angry it endangers my health.

Posted by: PaleRider is simply Irredeemable at September 14, 2021 04:10 PM (pxVvf)

53 Nice breakdown, but another way to look at it - if the money is the only consideration, which it isn't but it is at least something stable we can get our arms around - is in comparison to other big-ticket items the US government has foolishly sponsored.

The value of the stuff in Afghanistan (and I'll stick with $85 billion) is:
- More than the entire auto industry bailout in 2009
- About *170 times* more than the Solyndra debacle
- About *40 times* more than the development cost for the SpaceX Falcon rocket and Dragon manned capsule
- About 12% of the entire ARRA bailout package in 2009

The entire thing is just astounding, and that's only the money. The intelligence value to the Chinese, Iranians and Russians is incalculable, and so is the damage it will cause. The humiliation is incalculable. The dead men are truly incalculable.

The military and the administration - especially Milley and whoever is running Joe Biden - have a lot to answer for. They never will answer. They will never even be asked.

Does this still work? Does anyone not see that businesses never pay taxes? I'll say it louder for those in the back:

When I got to the voting place, there was a line, and they were letting X number in at a time. A very elderly couple (a vet in a wheelchair and his wife) came behind me. She was 70lbs dripping wet. Late 80's my guess. I insisted they go in front of me, so they could get into the A/C building ASAP. Ass in front of me didn't even turn around, but they got in with the next group, which made me happy.

The gal was ecstatic I handed her my voting guide, you'd think I handed her a C note. So she just had to scan and I was done. We have a choice between paper and touch screen. Everybody was going for touch screen. I took paper. "Sharpie or Ballpoint?" Ballpoint, please. go to my little table, 2 seconds later, done. Jerk that was in front of me was still trying to get his touchscreen working on the other side of the room when I was getting my "I voted today!" sticker.

Fingers crossed for CA!

It's the same for other businesses. If you want to make sure no mid size corporations ever challenge the big established companies, just make sure the founders have to sell so there's less competition. Either you grow to a nationwide chain in a few decades or forget it.

Then there's the wealth tax. Would Steve Jobs have been forced to sell out his ownership share of Apple long before the Iphone existed? Yeah, probably.

People the bribed/stole/schemed from and harmed others to attain their riches should be imprisoned now, and have all that wealth given to ? those harmed.

164 The rich will always find tax breaks, and if they can’t, they’ll buy tax breaks. The easy thing is to say “raise taxes on the rich”, but the people who end up paying those taxes will be you and me. The rich will get out of it.

The hard thing is to end the breaks, subsidies, and loopholes that make such corruption possible. The rich don’t seem to fight higher taxes much, but they fight tooth and nail any attempt to remove the complexity that lets them cheat.

But to train a US Naval engineman to be P-fired boiler tech in the US Navy took decades of development of the systems to understand it and two years of intense training onboard - and all of these knuckleheads still needed some non-com with 10 years of experience to lead them and teach them as they learned along with a Chief Engineering Officer who over saw the division with an advance degree in Naval Engineering - we weren't going to resurrect that type of knowledge and experience in 20 years on the most advanced aircraft technology known to man to a primitive culture - period.

246 Sorry, i was away.

My support for inheritance tax is limited to my support for income tax, which I think should be low enough not to distort the economy. So maybe 20% max, and that includes all the bullshit SSI, FICA, etc. which is just regressive taxation. I also support generous deductions.

I mean, I hate all taxation but I accept that it has to come from somewhere. Right now it comes from earnings. Why does it make sense to tax people trying to make money, and not people who inherit it? It makes no sense.

The problem with family businesses and farms is that the other tax burdens are too high. If they were lower the business could pay the loan necessary to pass it down to next generation. Face it, a business that can't pay a mortgage for 20% of the capital passed down is already dead.

Yeah, I know my ideas are quixotic and will never happen.
Oh man, don't get me started on taxes. sorry.

247 Wealth tax is a problem because it was already taxed multiple times. It was taxed when the corporation earned a profit. It was taxed when the employee was paid his salary. It was taxed when the wealth was purchased. it was probably taxed a few other times that I can't think of. A wealth tax is the only tax worse than income tax and income tax is an absolute disaster.
