Ace of Spades Pet Thread

pet thread 8 28 21.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back, relax and enjoy the world of animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

***

This little kitteh was saved by a 7 year old. 2 little sweethearts.

Sometimes, we are so busy with life we don’t notice the things that are happening right around us. Maybe we are running late for the next meeting or appointment, or trying to make the subway on time. Either way, I urge you to slow down and enjoy this life; it already goes by so fast. There is no need to make it go by any faster. Unfortunately that is the case in Istanbul. Day in and day out people passed a trash can and avoided the crying coming from inside. Nobody is sure about the amount of time this creature was left in there, it could have been days or even weeks. Thousands of people passed by it though and not one curious person stopped to find out what the horrific cries were. Except for one 7-year-old girl who decided to stop and see what was making all of that noise.

Following up, a few weeks ago I mentioned a stray cat who moved in with us, and that she was pregnant. Well, Bean gave birth three weeks ago. I thought I would post a follow up and mention that mother and babies are available to good homes and any morons in the Indiana-Kentucky-Ohio area would like to adopt one or more, they are welcome to contact me. - Victor Tango Kilo

What adorable little kittens. Good luck in finding loving homes for those critters.

You've carried far too many pictures of Paisley but I think this photo of her checking out my car's moonroof is cute.
I wasn't driving at the time. - Northernlurker

One can never post too many pet photos. Thanks for sharing this cute photo of Paisley with us. Yes, we are glad you weren't driving.

Hi, Mis Hum! Thank you for all your fine work on the blog. I am having a new floor laid, which explains all the extraneous crap in the background. This is my youngest of three cats, Bing Crosby, trying to decide if he likes it or not. I like it much better than the junky carpet it replaced. - Longtime lurker, iamfelix

Thank you for your kind words. And thanks for submitting Bing's photo. Once he get's use to the new flooring he'll be fine. I think you'll like it as well.

unnamed.jpg

his beautiful bundle of energy joined our Ohio-based rescue a few weeks ago from the overcrowded Atlanta Fulton County shelter. He’s about 4 years old, has horrible manners, drools everywhere, and doesn’t like to share.

Oh, and by the way, his name is “Ace of Spades.” He’s no Ewok, but he’d make a great mascot.

My oh my what a long tongue this character has. "Ace" certainly looks friendly and full of energy. Best wishes in finding him a forever home.

A great group of pets today. Good luck to those kittens and Ace in finding forever homes. Thank you to all who contributed today.

If you have something animal/pet related you would like to contribute, you can reach us here at petmorons at gmail dot com.

God willing and the creeks don't rise we will see you next Saturday. Have a great week.

We find headless bunnies in the back hall frequently. He field dresses them efficiently and sometimes eats the meat as well. Bunny flavored cat food for the win

14 I had an epiphany about who really rules my house. I mean, I already KNOW who rules, but this was just confirmation. Whenever I come home from work, my cats Jasmine and Kaylee are there to greet me. Really they just want food, of course. Penny, on the other hand, makes me go to HER instead. Clearly, she is in charge.

23 >Why is there no mouse flavor cat food ?

Answer: Marketing(money$)

Humans buy cat food not cats. Further, most cat owners think of their cats as human not feline.

24 Kabul Small Animal Rescue, run by an American woman, needs help getting out of Afghanistan, called Operation Hercules. She's been stuck at the airport in Kabul for four days with dozens of dogs. They need a landing permit. Time is running out. She's trying to get the animals in cargo holds, they do not take up space that can be used by rescue people.

Biden recently shut down allowing animals to come to the US from other countries because covid, so I don't have a lot of hope that anyone in a position to do so will help them.

Pen Farthing got out with his dogs and cats yesterday. The UK govt. helped him to do so. He also had a lot of high-profile people pressuring the govt.

25 Has anyone ever dealt with stomatitis in their dog? My poor Yorkie has been on a half dozen meds to cure it and nothing is working. Poor things gums are so swollen. He does continue to eat but because he's had so many teeth removed and with the swollen lips/gums he tends to get food caught in his beard around his mouth and I have to put him in the sink and ever so gently get it out. I'm at my wits end with this.

His vet was supposed to get back to me early this week with 'next steps' and didn't. When I called to speak to him on Tues they told me he was gone on vacation. Ugh. I'm at my wits end with this.

No, that was not me; I never said that. Must have been somebody else I have no idea if animals go to heaven or not but I don't have any problem with it. I did say I liked the idea in one of C.S. Lewis' books-"The Great Divorce," I think, where some very kind woman in heaven is followed around by bunces of animals because she was very kind to them in her life.

I did say that I knew someone who said "Everybody goes to heaven" (They were talking about people) THAT idea I don't like because if I go to heaven I don't want to be stuck up there with an unrepentant Mao, Stalin or Hitler.

63 Thanks for the pet thread. It is amazing how a happy dog can make you happy.

Mini Ajax review of pet food: I have usually gotten him Beneful. It has usually been to combo champ of being easy on him to digest and expel, he seems to enjoy the flavor and does not get tired of it real quick. Salmon or Beef.

In Kroger, I was getting him some food after work at 3AM and they had a new flavor/product: Beneful Protein Rich. Seems to only have one 'flavor' and is about $3-4 more for a 14 lb bag. I went ahead and picked it up to see whether he would like it long term (he likes anything new for the most part- except science diet) or whether this would be a repeat of the explosive diarrhea he had with the Brave stuff.

He seems to actually like it. Does not let the food sit as long before plowing through it while I am brushing my teeth in the morning (somehow, the dog has triggered off me brushing my teeth as the call to eat anything remaining in his bowl.)

75 Ann Barnhardt had a long post a while back going into specific Biblical detail about why animals including pets do not have souls and cannot and do not go to heaven. IIRC, the basic argument was that humans are made in the image of God and therefore have immortal souls, animals are not made in the image of God and therefore do not have immortal souls, QED, "now stop being so childish about this, when you're in heaven you'll be so happy to be with God you won't even care about that dumb little animal". Or words to that effect.

I'm not a Christian, tho if I was, I daresay Barnhardt could make an atheist out of me. I had a cat die earlier this year. He was probably the best cat I've ever known, and I've known a lot. If there's an afterlife I think I'd genuinely prefer to spend it with that cat than with people.

100 C. S. Lewis believed that anything that is good and beautiful on Earth will have its better version in heaven. This included trees, flowers, animals, and many other things. The Narnia books were written by a man who truly loved animals.

Of course, Lewis isn't the final judge of these things, and he said so many times, but when I picture a loving God, it's hard to believe that this isn't true.

104 My little tom is a hunter, he does get the occasional fledgling, but he mostly huts mice and rats.
Mice get the hackeymouse treatment but he just kills the rats

I have watched in awe as cats will catch a mouse, drag it to the middle of the lawn and release it so they can catch it again.
My poor Tortie has no teeth so if she catches the mice, she has trouble doing anything but playing with them.

105 Re: Mouse flavored cat food.

At some point, some human has to decide how things are flavored. How would you flavor the food except by adding mice? Artificially? Then how do you test the results?

I had this same question when they came out with booger-flavored jelly beans. I pictured the food scientist coming up to the boss to test it. The boss tries the booger bean and says, "yes, that's a lot closer."

Scientist: "How do you KNOW?"

109 I made my dog door into an IOT thing. So I can say "Alexa turn dog door on" and it opens.

On weekends the door opens later because sometimes they go out and bark. Today I had some early work to do for work, and the beagle - not the smart dog - comes over to look at me. So I say, "Alexa.." and he starts heading for the door. Usually they wait for the sound of it opening. So he knew what I was saying for sure.

We were in Mason City Iowa and not one vet would see us because we didn't live there. Our coach was getting work done at the Winnebago factory and we were going to be there for a week, we couldn't take her anywhere else. I had to call our vet in Ohio and she prescribed antibiotics to last us until we got to Wyoming where we have another vet. Luckily they worked and she is getting better but our Wyoming vet had to put her on three weeks of medication. I have never had a vet refuse to see a sick dog. So much for compassionate vets.

124 I read an account of a near-death experience that involved dogs. The woman died and found herself walking up a long set of stairs that had beautiful plants and flowers all around. At the top of the stairs was the welcoming bright light. She stopped on the stairs, wanting to come back.

All these dogs that were on the stairs with her continued on their way, walking around her toward the light. A few even looked back at her as if to say, "What are you doing? Come on!" Next thing she knows she's back in her body on the hospital bed with a doctor whacking her chest to get her heart going again.

I found it comforting to think of dogs heading for Heaven.

He got over that though he still has itchy skin that i put coconut oil on when he gets slow enough I can get hold of him - it seems to help.

I just had that happen - kitty injured a leg and my regular vet reception said no vet there (was a weekday at noon) and the local emergency vet also said they weren't handling cases. The time before a month ago my regular vet's receptionist said that they couldn't set an appointment for weeks - a different cat was vomiting and refusing food. That cat did recover in a day or so, but not from vet care.

I had a mouse in my house a few days ago. I went out to a local supermarket and bought four mouse snap-traps. The ones they have now are made of sturdy plastic, not like the old-fashioned wooden ones, and kill instantly. The brand name of the ones I bought is "PIC", which I had never heard of. Peanut butter is the recommended bait to use. After the first kill, I kept the other traps loaded, in case there was more than one mouse, but so far, there have been no more.

Another Boston Terrier when I was married (first time) named Dixie. Only had a few pets since but my Moose, daughters dog is my heart. He's everything to me.

I got so sick of them scurrying past I was legit pissed. I think one trap got them but I am not sure about that. I know the second was felled by a 3 iron. I simply would not allow another night of that. There is something about a 3 iron and flat our refusing something to go on. It wasn't easy but really no other outcome was possible.

My altered male Chekov D. Siberian, age 3.5 at that point, had no trouble with the introduction of big black Wolf cat (about 1.5 years old then). They eyed each other warily, but there was no hissing or fighting. Within an hour the two of them were sitting in the window together watching birds. On the other hand Arizona, male and altered, age 3.5, disliked my mother's cat Li'l Bit, a small girl cat -- but then he never liked any other cat in his territory. So it can go either way.

Thanks for asking! I honestly don't know. I have a room reserved in Birmingham, 6 hours drive away, for Monday and Tuesday. If the power goes out on Sunday, I'll live through it until I can pack them up on Monday and bug out. Cancellation window closes at midnight on Sunday, and I may not know by then if I'm leaving. But I'd rather pay a cancellation fee and not need the room, than to cancel early and not be able to find another place.

I don't expect any flooding -- just power loss from winds and rain. The storm is generally trending a bit more west than it was. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Heart wrenching, it is. I hate crying in my beer here, it should not be a melancholy thread, but damn.

MH"s Cat is 19 1/2 now.

I don't speak much about Sophia, our little ShiTzu, but she is over 16 now, deaf and almost completely blind, and her joints bother her sometimes. She still seems to enjoy sniffing around outside, but we rarely walk more than 150', and as often as not I pick her up and carry her home.

It's awful that they are both aging out at the same time. I do not resent in the slightest nursing them along, but, it consumes a LOT of time and emotional energy. They both have to be coaxed to eat the food that I make up for them, and there are the meds.

I'm constantly amazed and touched by the concern my friends here in the little grey boxes show for each other! Again, I doubt I will have to deal with flooding. The apartment building is part of a brick complex built in the '70s. It's not too far from the river levees, but far enough that I have never in 20 years seen flooding here to come up into my place. It's power outages that worry me -- and I have no place to put a generator.

I pray this will be my last season in this place.

256 Hiya, JT! It's a hot one here in central Indiana. Grrr the dog wants to go out but gets overheated when he does. He is blind and can't hear very well anymore but he loves the sun. I'm at his beck and call.

258 Just want to say that you all are the best. Week after week I see rescues, adoptions, and many huge hearts opening homes for unfortunate animals. After a week of political crap, this just makes it all better. Thank you, each and every one of you, and Mis Hum who makes the sharing of your stories possible.

260 Watching the local coverage of Hurricane Ida: It's clear that trying to drive east out of the city would be a disaster. Bumper to bumper, stop-and-go, and "go" is maybe 10 mph. I endured that horror in 2005; 12 hours to go 90 miles. Never again. In '12 I waited grimly without power until the storm had passed, then bugged out to Jackson, MS, along empty roads. Jackson was not exactly Valhalla, but there was A/C.

263 There are people in their 90's in my congregation who are very sharp, but it's evident Biden has some form of dementia and dozing off and word salads are frequently features of that along with forgetfulness and irritability.

265 How would you know what mice tasted like?

(I was amused to read about how Alton Brown made cat-poo flavored biscuits to try to get his dog to stop scavenging his cat's litter. No, he didn't actually taste-test. He figured if he could duplicate the smell, it'd probably duplicate the taste. Apparently, it worked.)

266 "...God willing and the creeks don't rise..." I am told that actually refers to Indian uprisings, not hydrological conditions.
