Good morning, kids. The start of a new week and the dueling nightmares of the catastrophe in Afghanistan and right here in the nation formerly known as the United States of America deepen and darken. The fact that the people who caused the former are the ones that caused the latter should come as no surprise. For those that need proof, it comes in the form of not some pierced, purple-haired, Cheeto-finger-stained Antifa goon or from an equally braindead but ridiculously wealthy celebrity but from someone who is supposed to be the exact opposite.

Exhibit A for today is General Michael Hayden, former Director of the NSA and Director of the CIA -- under George W. Bush.
Hayden's Twitter feed reveals how very deeply and profoundly this former military officer and government official hates that half (or more than half) of America that voted for Trump. He shows the same animosity we saw with Peter Strzok when he wrote his married girlfriend that he could "smell" the Trump supporters at Walmart.

As a reminder, young Afghan men were responsible for the majority of the huge number of sex crimes in Germany and Austria after Angela Merkel invited them into Europe. But Hayden, who probably lives in a leafy enclave safe from poorer neighborhoods, thinks it would be great for them to live in your neighborhood. . .
. . . But here's the thing about Hayden: This guy is not a Democrat. He considers himself a standard-bearer of true Republicanism. He is the perfect reminder that there is a monoparty in Washington, D.C., one that ranges politically from slightly left to far left. Trump challenged that establishment and the establishment tried to destroy him -- and, with January 6 as the weapon, is trying to destroy Trump's supporters too.

So, let's see. Leave thousands of actual Americans and perhaps a relative handful of legitimate Afghani nationals who are not of the dark age bent to become the next Tehran 52, or Terry Anderson or, worse, William Buckley or Daniel Pearl while at the same time, bringing in planeloads of unvetted "refugees" where some could be the next Omar Mateen, Nidal Hassan, Richard Reid or the 9/11 Twenty. But why fret about that when we have no more southern border where tens of thousands of third world Latin American peasantry are flooding the nation?

Sefton, you're overreacting and exaggerating! 99.5% of those coming here both on foot and standing room on C-5A Galaxies are perfectly harmless. Statistically zero in the words of Biden's ventriloquists. Only 200-235 potential flight students who only want to learn how to fly the plane but not land or takeoff. So, we'll get our hair mussed but it's for the greater good, right?

Let's compare and contrast to the mass hysteria of masks, lockdowns and vaccinations, shall we? The original Chinese COVID-19 was proven to have an IFR that was only a fraction of one percent. Which means that if you got infected and actually became symptomatic you have something like a 99.5 or 99.6% chance of getting over it. And yet we are being tortured with the constant drumbeat that this thing is an extinction-level Andromeda Strain plague that requires vaccination of every man, woman and child despite the fact that the virus itself mutated and that the vaccines are probably at best useless. I'm not going to get into the whole history of this madness but the salient point is that those who are engaging in this campaign of fear and now pushing for forced compliance of every man, woman and child are cut of the same cloth as those who directed our foreign policy that resulted in what has played out in Afghanistan.

They don't care. America and the American citizen, culture and way of life are to be exterminated and replaced with whatever mad vision they have for a global society-cum-gulag. Michael Hayden is Anthony Fauci is Vanilli Milley is John Brennan is Anthony Blinken is George Bush is Lois Lerner is Jonathan Gruber is Peter Strzok and on and on and on.

Which leaves us -- where? Kyeyune is right, I think, that the technocratic promises of our administrative masters have been exploded. What is happening in Afghanistan is only one instance of how hollow those promises are turning out to be. Once upon a time, the bureaucrats -- the Bidens and Blinkens as far as the eye can see -- were "believed to be able to mobilize science and reason and progress to accomplish what everyone else could not, and so only they could secure a just and functional society for their subjects, just as only the rightful kings of yore could count on Providence and God to do the same thing." Yes, these ideas are essentially metaphysical because all political legitimacy, in the end, rests on something transcendent -- a matter of belief, not simply calculation.
Kyeyune thinks that the "epoch of the liberal technocrat is now over," that the "bell has well and truly tolled for mankind's belief in their ability to do anything else than enrich themselves and ruin things for everyone else." Maybe so. Yes, inertia is a powerful force. The institutions we've been living with are likely to persist, more or less hollowed out, for some time. And what might replace that technocratic dream is a question that admits of markedly different answers, many unpalatable. (How many speak English? A troubling question, that.)
Francis Fukuyama was, I believe, about as wrong as it is possible for a pop political philosopher to be when he predicted the "end of history" and the efflorescence of liberal democracy everywhere and forever.
Of course, Fukuyama is a Hegelian, which at least partly explains his silliness. What is happening now in Afghanistan, and in America because of Afghanistan, is another in a long line of counterexamples to Fukuyama's thesis. It may, however, turn out to be a more fundamental challenge than anyone could have foreseen even a few weeks ago. For that, we have the bumbling, mentally incontinent Joe Biden to thank, he and his clown car of self-absorbed spiritually adipose bureaucrats who prance about in a cloud of self-importance, shedding disaster like dandruff.

The more they are exposed, the more they are determined to control us or destroy us. Maybe they'll get rid of Biden or he'll get an ice cream headache grand mal seizure. And that leaves us with Kamala. Makes no difference. We are not impeaching, 25th Amendmenting or necessarily voting our way out of this. Not a pretty picture of what's over the horizon.

The people doing this have one major regret from the past decade, and it's that Europe got radically transformed by Islamist savages but we didn't. They want a violent underclass - for now. Probably. Much of it probably won't be used. Ground vehicles and small arms and armor certainly will be. Helicopters, drones, comms, advanced missiles, etc. that were left behind will probably not be used by the Taliban, at least not much. Those require gobs of infrastructure and engineering to keep running. It is more likely that this kind of equipment will be sold off - either to rogue states for their own use or to places like Iran, China and Russia so those countries can use them for intelligence purposes.

And the cash will flow directly to the Taliban, which they will use to cement control at home and sponsor whatever deadly hijinks they wish to sponsor. There is a decent chance that the next big attack on the US will have been paid for by selling off our own equipment to our enemies and rivals.

I personally knew one Afghan (Afghani = currency) who spoke English, was a teacher in Afghanistan and ended up in the D/FW area teaching - that is, until some "honor student" gunned him down and let his wife and young daughter be wards of the State.

Considering the shit we have as teachers now, perhaps it would be better to have the Afghan men teach in our schools. They certainly will be skilled in dealing with unruly students.

A test. Not a diagnosis, but a positive test. Which has been used - very wrongly - as shorthand for "cases" since day 0.

A positive test on 45 PCR cycles that is likely a false positive. A positive test from a process that cannot distinguish between SARS-CoV-2 and influenza.

In short, a positive test from a process that is deeply flawed and unreliable, and absent a diagnosis, will result in ruinous fines and jail time if you do the right thing and ignore it if you have no symptoms and no diagnosis. And where the hell did they get 10 days? At the beginning, we didn't know the incubation period. We do now, and it is usually within three days, perhaps five. Not ten.

I think that is Wal-Mart SOP. My mom wanted to get a watch battery replaced. Their jewelry department refused. This is typical, and it happened before COVID and not just at Wal-Mart but at places like Kohl's, too. The reason is because their people are usually not very skilled and if they didn't sell the watch originally, they won't service it because if they screw up and break it, they can't just give you another one off the shelf. That's the real reason.

The cited reason they gave to my mom? COVID. They won't service a watch because of COVID. Which makes no sense at all, but whatever. It's become a boilerplate answer for everything that might make a normal person say, "wait just on damned minute here, what the hell is going on and why is everything fucked up?"

We have a regional grocery chain that, while a bit more $$$ than WM, does NOT use that stupid self-checkout "Peek-a-boo, we photograph you" technology. I go there 90% of the time. But thankfully, the government systems are pretty closed off and incompatible and very hard to use. The commercial systems are more pervasive and likely more generally useful. If the state wants you, they've got you. If the general Complex wants you, those commercial systems are very useful indeed.

Bhakdi graduated from medical school in Germany in 1970. After a year of clinical work, he joined the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology, where he remained for four years as a post-doc.
There, he also began researching immunology. Eventually, he ended up chairing the department of medical, microbiology and hygiene at the University of Mainz, where he worked for 22 years until his retirement nine years ago. During that time, Bhakdi also worked on vaccine development, and says he's "certainly pro-vax with regards to the vaccinations that work and that are meaningful."

It's funny. When Pfizer first announced they were going for FDA approval in June (IIRC), it was noted that it would take anywhere from 6-8 months. That gets approval to Dec 2021 - Feb 2022. Then it was announced that it was being fast-tracked, and it would get the approval in September. Now, with the fiasco in Afghanistan, we are getting approval as early as today.

Probably correct, but easier said than done. Lefties love to do this shit, it's who they are. And many on our side dislike it intensely. So the question is how to get people to "change their ways." One thing would be to look at the areas where we've been successful. Two are on guns and abortion. In both, we've succeeded at least to the point that GOPe types are afraid to come out wholly on the wrong side. Those who do, well, they lose.

Note the two are quite different. Defending guns means keeping what we want. Opposing abortion means getting rid of something we hate.

How to learn from those (and any others), I'm not the guy to say. I am just too resistant to motivational efforts of every kind. I can't help saying "But that's not strictly true."

I think it is a coincidence. I called this two weeks ago, long before Afghanistan blew up the way it did. The DoD issued a vax mandate for all servicemen. They are forbidden from doing so for an unapproved vaccine. Law is dead, but that law was caused by something still raw and pretty scary: the Anthrax vaccine debacle.

The moment they announced the mid-September vax mandate for the armed forces, I said that we would have FDA approval by the end of August at the latest, and possibly as soon as a week. It was longer than a week, but we're going to beat the end-of-August deadline.

Don't forget dementia. I know several people who's parents or grandparents in nursing homes were fine and dandy in February of last year and then slid into dementia by late summer. Is it due to isolation and lockdown? I don't know. It sure isn't helping. I suspect there's been a dementia spike that tracks neatly to the lockdowns, but I don't know how to pull that data.

Never surprises me when it becomes obvious that pets are nothing more than props to politicians and they don't actually care about them. My beagle is a handful and he got out of my parents pen when I was there for something at my younger sisters house. After getting him back in and coming back my older sister made a joke like it would be better if he hadn't gotten back in. She quickly realized that I found zero humor in it from the way I looked at her. That's caring about a pet vs. a politician's "who wants this dumb dog?"
