Obviously the news of the week is what happened in Afghanistan.

There'll be some talk of Afghanistan, but I'll try to keep it to a minimum Some Talk Of Afghanistan Might as well get it out of the way. This is from a friend of mine (and sometimes poster here). I didn't know it until today, but apparently he's in the middle of this mess. This is the picture he sent and his take on it:

If this isn’t the Best Photograph of 2021, I want to see what beat it. Now, since he's Air Force I asked him if there was an USAF wine steward standing by in case the kid woke up thirsty, but that's just me razzing an old friend. (And really, he'll tell you about the time his unit brought a portable dance floor into the field with them when they deployed for maneuvers, so it's not like I'm that far off base) As much disdain as we do and should show for the political actors both in and out of the military (JCOS, I'm looking at you) in this situation, we need to remember the boots on the ground, the ratings, the airmen, the grunts and leathernecks, who are shining ambassadors for the US wherever there is trouble in this world. Deep down, every single one of them is a paladin at heart, and God bless them one and all.
the irony highlights the real civilizational difference here: one where combat is via prissy morality and pure spectacle, and one where the battles are literal and deadly. One where elites contest power via spiraling purity and virality contests waged online, and where defeat means ‘cancelation’ or livestreamed ‘struggle sessions’ around often imaginary or minor offenses. And another place where the price of defeat is death, exile, rape, destitution, and fates so grim people die dangling from airplanes in order to escape.
Chuckie Schumer tried to sneak a late night vote on the federal takeover of election law. He was going for “unanimous consent”, whereby only one no vote is needed to stop it. If there is nobody who votes against the bill, it is deemed passed by “unanimous consent” and off it goes to Uncle Joey's desk to be signed into law. He scheduled this vote for 3:30 AM, after the senate had spent a 15 hour day picking our pockets and impoverishing our children passing their “infrastructure” bill. 50 Republicans in the Senate, and 49 of them couldn't be bothered. Only one showed up to block the bill – Ted Cruz.
"My Heart Will Go On" is a song recorded by Canadian singer Celine Dion. The song serves as the main soundtrack to James Cameron's blockbuster film Titanic, based on an account of the transatlantic ocean liner of the same name which sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean. The song's music was composed by James Horner, its lyrics were written by Will Jennings, while the production was handled by Walter Afanasieff, Horner and Simon Franglen.[1][2]

My question now is, what do we need to do with it? The old guy made some noises about “you can get a pump at Harbor Freight and pull water out to water the lawn”, and implied that is something that we should do to keep water flowing into the well so it circulates and doesn't stagnate, which makes a certain amount of sense, but he was real hazy on details. If he had said “Make sure you pump X gallons of water out each week, from at least Y feet down” that would be one thing, but he didn't/couldn't do that so I don't really know. Well details: It's next to the house, about 45' deep. It fills with water to about 20' down, so that's a 25' column of water in it, which makes it, in the old guy's words, “a really good well”. So, what should we do? I'm not ready to disconnect from city water at the moment, I don't have a reason to. I wouldn't be averse to using the well for irrigation purposes, and I suppose the prepper part of the equation encourages installing a hand pump “just in case”, which shouldn't be a big deal, but I'd like the Horde's advice: What should I do with my well to make sure that it is ready and functional in case we ever need it?
Does anyone know of a charity that rehabs old laptops? Our computer repair store back in Baltimore used to do they, they would take old computers and rehab them before providing them to poor inner city kids for use in school, but we don't live there anymore. We just replaced my wife's old laptop, probably 6-8 years old. It works fine. I pulled the HD, but put a new one in and Bob's your uncle. I hate to just toss it if someone can make use of it, any ideas?

Megan Rapinoe Might Call It Quits Whatever will this country do without a moody lesbian lecturing us on our sins? Say it ain't so, Rapinoe! A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo woo woo.
But I like sofas covered in plastic! Not really, of course, but whenever I feel the need to laugh at design/fashion/lifestyle trends from the past, I remind myself that such things are transitory, and in fact they have to be by definition or the terms become meaningless. I sometimes amuse myself by imagining house flipping shows from 2050. “My God. This house just reeks of the '20s! Look at this horrible open concept design! All the houses back then had it, but we're going to need to run up some walls to make this attractive to buyers. Also, there's no orgy-porgy pit! Ugh, it's run at least 25K to put one in, but we have to, nobody's going to buy a house without one. And where should we put the soma nook?”

re: the well. It's a lot like having a classic car; if you let it sit all the time it won't run when you need it. I think it should be run enough to clear and replace the water column at least once a week (what diameter pipe? - 2 7/8 would be common enough around here)
probably running it 2 - 3 hours a week would do it, even if you just pump it into the lake. Consider it maintenance costs. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 19, 2021 09:07 PM (WmVfO) 36

Nice ONT, Wierd Dave. Great photo from your friend, isnt it cool to know first hand and honest to goodness hero?
As for the well, get a pump that can lift a column of water from about a foot off the bottom floor of it through a 2" pipe. Out a check valve on it so it cannot siphon air. Next make yourself a portable sprinkler system for the kids to play in, water the garden, water the grass, wash the car, separate you house laundry from the city water and wash clothes with it (you'll need a small water heater for the laundry to be truly separate). Pump about 60 gallons per week and that will keep it healthy. Washing laundry and watering the grass will more than handle that. Plus yoir laundry will smell fresh longer if the well water is truly clean. Pro hint, set it all up, run it for 30 hours, collect a sample and have that tested for drinking water purposes. Well water, pfft. Try drinking water out of a concrete cistern like we did at my grandma's farm and don't get me started on the wooden water pipes in the nearby town.
Actually, my little burg is all well water. One of the wells is just around corner or so. At home we had a well that was used for watering the lawn. It was pure enough to drink. I'm not sure if the well was refilled from the Yellowstone river or the large irrigation ditch that ran about 1/4 from the house. The ditch was seasonal and was typically 20 ft across and 15 ft deep. Once you're hooked to city water, most towns won't let you disconnect and go with a well. Some even require you to spike them, ie fill with concrete. They want their monthly pound of flesh, don'tcha know.
Are you metered? If so, install a pump yourself. Use the water for lawn and garden only though and I wouldn't recommend drinking from the hose either. That's a very shallow well, probably feeding from your lake. Not much soil filtration happening there. Posted by: GnuBreed, no circumstance at August 19, 2021 09:25 PM (F0YaR) 117

Bite the bullet and get a modern polymer bead water treatment system and manage your own water. It will cost a few grand, but you'll never suffer from a "boil water" order again. A cheap orange box gasoline generator will provide enough juice to pump water, keep your fridges cold, and heat enough water for showers and cleaning.
We have that setup, and our water is far better than what the city can provide. The sense of water security is priceless. Posted by: Foamy at August 19, 2021 09:31 PM (qc4S0) 141

You need to pump the well for a day or so to see how much capacity you actually have. If you can run it dry I would forget about trying to switch the house over to it. A water softener is pretty well a necessity in my area of the midwest, the minerals in the water make it hard and if you have iron or sulfur your water will stink and stain all your clothes, bathtubs, sinks etc. We have a well for our house water and all the water I use for farming, we have iron and sulfur it's about 100ft down and I pump close to a 100,000 gallons a year just for the sprayers.

Laws that control wells are a big deal in the Western US.
In my state, there are senior and junior water rights. Eastern WA agriculture land owners are starting to run up against each other, especially in the dry summers. Some land owners have been shut off at the most inopportune time because their water rights were insufficient. They cannot even drill for a well without water rights on your property any more, and I vaguely recall some wells being shut down a decade + ago. Laws vary from state to state. But "grandfathering" your well, *if is still active* , could be in danger if you don't keep it actively in use. Again, I have no ideas about specific Texas laws on water rights, but I would think that keeping your well active, especially in future years when water sources are tapped even harder than now, should help establish your right to keep using it. And yeah, if your well water is truly *sweetwater*, then heck YES use that for your regular drinking water. I would think that pumping it into a stainless cistern, then routing into your home should be not to ridiculously difficult or expensive, save for the cost of the cistern. Weird Dave, just water your lawn. That will clean it out, get good flow into it, and you will get an good idea of how much water you get an hour.
Then test it for contamination and you may consider building a sand filter, or not, depending. Once you know what it is worth to you, you can do an analysis of what it would be worth putting into it. Pinellas County Florida has probably the worst water anywhere. If used for coffee or tea it was unpalatable. Our cat and dog would not drink tap water, preferring to drink out of the pool.
It reeked of so much chlorine to make it clear enough to look like water you couldn't stand it. Crystal Springs water made a fortune with coolers and weekly deliveries. Posted by: Winston, GOPe, not one dime, not one vote at August 19, 2021 09:51 PM (FtJ1S) 262

I think it was that Assange guy (or the other guy) who claimed Afghanistan war was actually just a huge money laundering operation for the usual suspects in our "government".
Looked at in that light, it makes more sense. When our unit landed in Macedonia it was a wheat field, we set up our tents. They started building wooden "barracks" almost immediately. 100,000 dollars a pop. Plywood. Contracted mess hall service. None of the Army cooks deployed with their units. They don't do that anymore. Everything contracted out at $$$. They cut the military budget, increased the deployments, and spent even more money, because it's contracted out. Road construction, water purification, you name it. No porn in the mini PX though. That would be obscene! It grew into this HUGE place called Camp Bondsteel. Probably visible from outer space by now. I remember being home on leave and reading a newspaper article about the "US pulling out of Macedonia", and I about fell out of my chair. Um ... no. I was going suggest simply to download a copy of the latest Linux Mint, and use the "wipe HD and install fresh" option to load it on the laptop. Linux is such a resource hog as Windows, and those tired laptops perk right up. And Mint is pretty easy to get used to, for a user coming from a Windows background. Use the Linux laptop for your Web surfing; you don't need to run a firewall. If some malware does manage to brick the machine, just reload Linux from the get-go. It's free. We're on well water in southwest Montana. We have 2 wells -- one for household use and one dedicated to the sprinkler system. The house water is softened.
We'd like a hand pump in the event of an emergency but it's very expensive to have one retrofit so that's on hold for now. One recent benefit is that our area is presently in a Stage 2 drought, and those on city water face lawn watering regulations. Homes with wells are exempt. here in the south, cicadas dominate june, july, and august. That high pitched droning is the background soundtrack to every summer event as long as there have been any. and crickets sound completely different. Sometimes I go out in the back yard and you can hardly hear yourself think because of the racket from the cicadas.
Posted by: Tom Servo at August 19, 2021 10:12 PM (WmVfO) We get annual or "dog day" cicadas every summer here in central MD. This year, we also got the 17 year Brood X emergence. Old well owner here.....About that well, if you have copper pipes test the well pH (and the well water itself for ecoli, chjemical contamination etc.) before disconnecting from city water. Copper pipes do not like acidic water less than 7 pH (many shallow wells are acidic). It corrodes the copper pipes and is a health hazard.

So if the burning times is your concern my first question would be what is your source of power? I have a 1hp Drummond irrigation pump from Harbor freight that I use with my auxiliary holding tanks for watering the gardens. It supplements my well. Pump works fine but it is not self priming so you have to make sure it is primed every time. It ran about $180. I also have a higher budget Pacer 1 1/2 hp pump for water transfer . Posted by: westminsterdogshow at August 19, 2021 10:24 PM (c/sG0) Fairly well, I guess. Mom is always guarded when she talks about Dad, because she talks on speaker mode and she is usually with him, so he can hear everything. His dementia is different than Alzheimer's. He still knows us. He likes my beard. He smiles and touches his chin. He laughs at our dumb family jokes. When me and my siblings are with him he is genuinely happy. But he can't talk to us. He does not get angry or mean. He gets sad. That hurts. Suffice to say, I am really stressed about going back to Montana this weekend. But Mom and Dad need me. 375 trudeau is setting up the question: Why?
It's interesting that he would go to the Clinton camp and not the Obama camp. Well, that the story would go to the Clinton camp. I mean, it's all lies. Why did they choose this particular one? Posted by: t-bird at August 19, 2021 10:22 PM (pbStR) Might have something to do with his country recently got bigly fucked over when the Obamunists canceled the Keystone XL project. That was arguably an even bigger deal for them than it was us. Yeah, sure, he probably personally doesn't like Big Oil or those rubes in their version of flyover country...but he likes having tax revenue and a viable budget, so kneecapping one of their major industries presents a bit of a problem. I mean I was being funny with "forever" at the end of my last comment. I'm pretty sure forever started out meaning "forever" as it was a marrying of "for" and "ever".
But we say "I haven't seen him in forever" or "it's taking forever". It doesn't mean "forever" anymore. It doesn't mean eternal. It just means a long time and we all accept that. We do the same with "always". We now substitute it for "often", which is quite expressly *not* always. The same thing happened to literally. It's ironic. He taught us to always check for a hot wire with the back of your hand, because that way when your muscles tighten when the electricity hit your hand will be pulled away, rather than grabbing onto it. He showed us how to do on a hot wire. The weird thing is that I think he liked it. I never touched 480, but I touched 220 and lived to tell the tale. I didn't like it. Sometimes electronics and their beeping can be hard to find! It can throw like a ventriloquest.
Once upon a time there was a sysadmin who heard beeping coming from an IBM SP rack. Now, those things aren't supposed to beep, as they have no transducer to make noises. He called IBM, who said it shouldn't be able to beep. They sent a tech out who didn't believe it, until he heard the beep. So they arranged to shut down all 8 nodes in this rack. The big day came, and the nodes were shut down, then the power disconnected. And still there was a beep. That's when the tech looked up and spotted the smoke detector. No Republican was getting elected in 2008. Yeshua bar Yehoseph could have run as a Republican and would have lost.
Posted by: Captain Obvious, Laird o' the Sea at August 19, 2021 10:57 PM (LBiAf) John McCain could have been President that year. He was the only Republican who could have beaten Obama, because he had distanced himself from W sufficiently to bring independents around. Obama's Achilles Heel was his obvious inexperience. Sarah Palin shored up his right flank sufficiently to keep him close. He blew it when his people Wallace and Schmidt sabotaged Palin with his blessing (because he couldn't bear admitting that he needed her help), and when he bone-headedly paused his campaign during the financial crisis. He placed his political future in the hands of Pelosi and Reid, and there was no way they were going to let that opportunity slip away from them. Megan and her wife, WNBA all-star, Sue Bird, are treated like royalty by the Seattle-area media. I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. Sue has been in the WNBA, playing for the Seattle Storm for something like 17 years now. Before she hooked up with Rapinoe, she was a good interview and friendly to all. She still is like that, but has also adopted some of the militancy of Megan in some of her appearances. As sour as Rapinoe is nearly every time in front of the camera, Bird is the opposite. It's a big mystery to me why they hooked up, but then again, there are many couples who could be asked the same question, regardless of which side of the street they walk on. Hey, Dave. Thanks for yet another great ONT!
Having a well is a blessing, indeed! I have a similar deal: city water for household, and use the well for all that stuff that tends to run up the water bill...watering the yard & garden, washing cars, siding, etc. For SHTF, you might look into a solar generator to run the pump, alternating use between the well and other (small?)appliances. I bought one, but haven't yet unboxed it, so can't speak to whether or how well it will perform in real life. I understand that actual math is required to calculate how much juice to allot for specific applications so I'm probably screwed there. But for smart folks like you, might be worth considering. Malone is discussing the idea of the "noble lie". The US govt. does a lot of that. A bunch of experts think they know best, and that the general public is a bunch of idiots, so they have to be treated like children. We tell them lies, cover up the truth, because they can't make the right decisions. We will make the decision for them, and tell them sweet lies. It's exactly how you would treat a child related to a complex medical decision. Suppose a child has some serious disease, one which he could die from, or be severely messed up for life. There are treatments available, some risky, etc. A complex risk vs benefit analysis will have to be done. The child is not capable of doing that himself. So, you the parent have to make that decision. When you do, you're going to tell him little "noble lies". We're gonna make you better. Yah, and playing the boy's team really IS like a pre-season football matchup: winning is not the priority, retooling your team is. Trying out new attacks, experimenting with different people in different roles, giving the 2nd stringers some clutch play time, etc. I think the expressions of hatred come from the fact that we can't directly punish Rapinoe for running her mouth, so we take it out on what we can reach. I'm not surprised that's Japanese. Can you name any other country that would, or could, elevate a lesbian couple like Rapinoe and Bird? That alone should have been enough to be proud to play for the USA. It's idiotic that neither her nor her media team could have seen that.
Posted by: Darrell Harris at August 19, 2021 11:38 PM (mdjgu) They say a lot of bullies have been drawn into Wokedom, not because they care about PCBS, but because it gives them the chance to unleash their Karen.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at August 19, 2021 11:39 PM (Mzdiz) But it's fair to wonder how noble it all is since they also tell every other kind of lie. With doctors you have people who are forced to tell many uncomfortable truths in between lies. With politicians and experts, they are rarely required by anyone to tell the absolute truth. They are instructed (or decide) to speak to a greater narrative and if the truth pops in it's probably a coincidence. Posted by: ... at August 19, 2021 11:46 PM (9AWuc) 567

That wouldn't surprise me. I'm from the South, and a lot of Southern gays did it more to get back at their parents and society than any notion of love or attraction. Consequently the Southern gay culture is/was rather...volatile...compared to places like San Francisco, where it was more of a libertine sort of deal.

But I love Butte. It's the coolest, weirdest town ever. But yeah, I was yuge Evel Knievel fan.
Butte "died" many times during my growing up years. I remember the miners' strikes and the shut downs and the Pit slowly eating away many of the landmarks. But the town still survives and has some of the most intriguing neighborhoods in the country. Beats the heck out of the monotonous suburbs in western Washington. Hope everything is okay with your parents. I will say a prayer for them - and for you too. Posted by: Nunya Bizness at August 19, 2021 11:48 PM (K0Sk0) 572
Captain Obvious: "That was my assessment at the time. Was I wrong about Obama?"
If you mean about him being pretty much the guaranteed winner that season? Yeah, I think so. I had hopes McCain would win (well, that Palin would win and McCain would drop dead immediately) but as election approached, my hopes sank. But POC Jesus was pretty much inevitable and I understood it at the time. Didn't like it, knew disaster was coming, but understood. (It was Obama's reelection that told me we're really not seriously serious as a country anymore.) We were destined to embrace the suck either way, more so than in a lot of previous binary elections. Sometimes I feel like they are playing at a deeper level than us. I was listening to an AM talk radio guy mocking Biden's "that was 4-5 days ago!" line. Our guy was arguing that it was only 2, ie. falling for the "we've already established that. Now we're just haggling over the price". I still remember the day Obama won. No, I don't mean the election day, or the inauguration or whatever. It was a press conference I saw on TV at an airport in late 2007, and they were giving him that very particular, vaguely regal sort of deference to authority that sitting presidents typically get.
It was clear that the media had chosen. He was their boi, and they'd go to any length to build the Obama story that they had charted. Posted by: CppThis at August 19, 2021 11:55 PM (UewuT) 586

This struggle we are in is simply a continuation of prior effort by those who came before. It is the continuation of that effort to preserve our heritage each generation undergoes. This is our contribution. We will prevail, because we are Americans, and as such are denied the option of failure. Never forget that. Posted by: irongrampa at August 20, 2021 12:36 AM (KATBx) 626

If they get the idiot responsible to resign I might consider patronizing them again. I have a golf trip to Wisconsin in mid-September. We usually hit a Subway a couple of times on the trip because it's the closest place that's open. I'm already planning on bringing up my own lunchmeat and rolls. They will not get another dime from me. I'd rather go hungry. After something like 500 days of pandemic I escaped all that and went to the Fox theater in Tucson where I spent two glorious hours with the Mavericks and about 1,500 of my newest closest friends. There we danced The night away and and knew everything would be fine as long as there was loving tonight. There was, there was. We jumped and danced to something profound , music, American music, to the down beat, the up beat, the offbeat, the back beat that pulsed wild. Right there is all the proof you will ever need about the goodness of us. Poder Vivir. Again fully. Indeed.

We can't figure out what went wrong. Losing thousands of dollars per minute. I go to the server room (I know NOTHING about them) to find a repairman on a ladder fixing something in the ceiling, completely unrelated, like a fan. The spirit of Hercule Poirot possessed me and I figured it out, but I'll pause here in case any of you can guess what had happened... ...a small screwdriver had slipped from his toolbelt and made a 1 in a million shot on the way down to the floor, clipping the switch to the server and turning it off. Like a ground source heat pump but you won't have to dig up your yard. Dump the water overboard to the city's sanitary sewer or to the storm drains. Posted by: Joseph Somsel at August 20, 2021 01:06 AM (4V3Ds) 640

Weird Dave,
It is difficult, time consuming, expensive and potentially illegal to put in a well in a place with municipal water service. At least in my experience with more regulated towns. Better to keep it alive than abandon what may be very helpful for irrigation in a normal time, or a life saving source of water in SHTF. Should not be difficult to develop the well now on the down low and use t from time to time. Posted by: Pete Bog at August 20, 2021 01:25 AM (Jzz++) 644

I've read that, they seem to really have a hard on about that. Why? I mean, so long as you're hooked up to the city, why do they care? It would be fun to build a house in town, without hooking up to electricity or water. "No, really, we're fine." (It's not allowed)
I wish (sometimes) I could go back in time knowing what I know now. Just to fook with 'em. Looking at the old plat, I'm pretty sure there is an abandoned well on my property. Posted by: Common Tater at August 20, 2021 01:34 AM (D1bJZ) 648

Posted by: Hoyt's Paid Turkish Provocateur at August 20, 2021 01:34 AM (49Exr) In my experience it's more about lack of attention than graft. When the lot is redeveloped prior to hooking up to the municipal utilities is typically when you change inspectors. I.e. one guy does grading and streets. Another does houses. It's easily overlooked if your civil engineer doesn't follow up. Posted by: Pete Bog at August 20, 2021 01:42 AM (Jzz++) 653

Random thought: Does that technically count as a violation of the Logan act? Or no because by definition anything said between Trudeau and Hitlery is "girl talk". I see comments about ridicously large suggestions of pipe diameter. A submerged pump with only a 1" or 1-1/4" pipe will serve up more than enough water. You put a plate at well head that holds the top of pipe and you essentially hang the entire pump and pipe from the pipe itself. My well is 400 ft deep so your 50' is childs play. Also I'm seeing that a submersible pump is half the cost of a shallow/jet pump that sits up top. Choose a 240V model if you can because it lowers the current and voltage drop so your pump runs cooler. I have a 4BR house that is still running after 30 years.

Whatever you do with that well, Don't tell the city about it. They may require you to abandon it which means filling it with concrete. It is generally not permitted or maybe illegal to interconnect your well with a public water supply which would be the case if you connected the well to your house plumbing and the water could intermix. Besides the city probably would not allow you to disconnect from their system because they would lose the revenue from your address which they are counting on. Your well will be great for watering the grass, washing the car, filling that above ground swimming pool and making that winter time hockey rink in the back yard.

On the shallow well. I have similar application. Recommend a small 120V submersible pump. Plug it into an outlet or generator when you need it. I have a spare Red Lion submersible pump if you are near Austin. New, unused, make you a deal.
This is a minimalist setup. A full fledged permanent installation would be 240V, fully cased with a pressure tank and switch. Ditto on the comment to not cross-connect with the public water supply. Posted by: ZootInTexas at August 20, 2021 08:56 AM (YzcwQ) 722

I get all my water but drinking water (Hinkley Schmitt) from a well. Get a submersible pump and make sure you can connect it into your generator. Then call a water analysis lab and have them send you out some sampling bottles. Run a pump for a bit and then fill the sampling bottles and send them back. You want to know about heavy metals, radon, organics, and a bacteriological analysis.
I would look into the legal situation. Where I live they have stopped issuing well permits but if you have a well you can continue to use it and can maintain it (e.g., replace the pump if it dies). Posted by: RonF at August 23, 2021 09:09 AM (l8nW6) Processing 0.1, elapsed 0.117 seconds. |
