What a week. And we still have one more day to go. How's everyone doing tonight? Good? I hope so. Obviously the news of the week is what happened in Afghanistan.
There'll be some talk of Afghanistan, but I'll try to keep it to a minimum

Might as well get it out of the way. This is from a friend of mine (and sometimes poster here). I didn't know it until today, but apparently he's in the middle of this mess. This is the picture he sent and his take on it:

These great young Americans stride the world, and so many are glad that they can and do. Two stripes. Probably < a years’ service time. A KID. But LOOK what he/she can DO, and DID.

I was in al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, yesterday, and I’ve never seen that much airlift, anywhere, at any time, in my long military career. The ramp crew was working all those airplanes in 115DegF. My First Officer was THANKED by an Air Force Captain for being there and helping out, and he said he was struck dumb by the man wanting to shake HIS hand. And each of those 100+ tails that we could see from our spot on the ramp was crewed by the same type of person that comforted and watched over that child as it slept on the deck of the American airplane that was saving all those lives.
How could you not be moved by the sight?
Now, since he's Air Force I asked him if there was an USAF wine steward standing by in case the kid woke up thirsty, but that's just me razzing an old friend. (And really, he'll tell you about the time his unit brought a portable dance floor into the field with them when they deployed for maneuvers, so it's not like I'm that far off base) As much disdain as we do and should show for the political actors both in and out of the military (JCOS, I'm looking at you) in this situation, we need to remember the boots on the ground, the ratings, the airmen, the grunts and leathernecks, who are shining ambassadors for the US wherever there is trouble in this world. Deep down, every single one of them is a paladin at heart, and God bless them one and all.

I need some advice. My property has a well on it. We haven't used it, our place is connected to city water, and the previous owner hadn't done anything with it either. That's at least 10 years that it's sat unused. Anyhow, in a decision that was about 80% “Be nice to know what we have here” and about 20% “Gee, if the burning times really come a well might be a handy thing”, we had a guy out to look at it. None of the big well companies around were interested – they want to drill new wells – but one of them gave me the name of this crusty old fellow who had been a well guy all his life. He came out and evaluated it, said it was a good well, just unused, stagnant and silted up. We had him clean it out, which he did with a big machine that pumped all the water and silt out, and now we have a fine well, full of fresh spring water.
My question now is, what do we need to do with it? The old guy made some noises about “you can get a pump at Harbor Freight and pull water out to water the lawn”, and implied that is something that we should do to keep water flowing into the well so it circulates and doesn't stagnate, which makes a certain amount of sense, but he was real hazy on details. If he had said “Make sure you pump X gallons of water out each week, from at least Y feet down” that would be one thing, but he didn't/couldn't do that so I don't really know. Well details: It's next to the house, about 45' deep. It fills with water to about 20' down, so that's a 25' column of water in it, which makes it, in the old guy's words, “a really good well”.
So, what should we do? I'm not ready to disconnect from city water at the moment, I don't have a reason to. I wouldn't be averse to using the well for irrigation purposes, and I suppose the prepper part of the equation encourages installing a hand pump “just in case”, which shouldn't be a big deal, but I'd like the Horde's advice: What should I do with my well to make sure that it is ready and functional in case we ever need it?

Does anyone know of a charity that rehabs old laptops? Our computer repair store back in Baltimore used to do they, they would take old computers and rehab them before providing them to poor inner city kids for use in school, but we don't live there anymore. We just replaced my wife's old laptop, probably 6-8 years old. It works fine. I pulled the HD, but put a new one in and Bob's your uncle. I hate to just toss it if someone can make use of it, any ideas?

Not really, of course, but whenever I feel the need to laugh at design/fashion/lifestyle trends from the past, I remind myself that such things are transitory, and in fact they have to be by definition or the terms become meaningless. I sometimes amuse myself by imagining house flipping shows from 2050. “My God. This house just reeks of the '20s! Look at this horrible open concept design! All the houses back then had it, but we're going to need to run up some walls to make this attractive to buyers. Also, there's no orgy-porgy pit! Ugh, it's run at least 25K to put one in, but we have to, nobody's going to buy a house without one. And where should we put the soma nook?”

Well water is fantastic. It has earth minerals and relatively low chemicals. You need to make certain you have a fluoride supplement.
I'd drink well water over city water in a heartbeat. Especially in Texas.

As for the well, get a pump that can lift a column of water from about a foot off the bottom floor of it through a 2" pipe. Out a check valve on it so it cannot siphon air.
Next make yourself a portable sprinkler system for the kids to play in, water the garden, water the grass, wash the car, separate you house laundry from the city water and wash clothes with it (you'll need a small water heater for the laundry to be truly separate).
Pump about 60 gallons per week and that will keep it healthy. Washing laundry and watering the grass will more than handle that. Plus yoir laundry will smell fresh longer if the well water is truly clean. Pro hint, set it all up, run it for 30 hours, collect a sample and have that tested for drinking water purposes.

My background is in technical communication and pedagogy. This training module failed on both counts. Looked pretty, but violated every principle of sound technical communication AND pedagogy. Also, I'm pretty sure it violated accessibility standards in many places.

I have no personal experience with them, but a friend with a lake lot uses one using lake water and I believe they can be made with a well.

If there is agricultural or industrial land nearby, one should be concerned about run-off from that...

Actually, my little burg is all well water. One of the wells is just around corner or so.
At home we had a well that was used for watering the lawn. It was pure enough to drink. I'm not sure if the well was refilled from the Yellowstone river or the large irrigation ditch that ran about 1/4 from the house. The ditch was seasonal and was typically 20 ft across and 15 ft deep.

Are you metered? If so, install a pump yourself. Use the water for lawn and garden only though and I wouldn't recommend drinking from the hose either.
That's a very shallow well, probably feeding from your lake. Not much soil filtration happening there.

She had a partial hip replacement, but the fall and surgery took a toll on her. After too many falls and breaks and surgery, she decided enough was enough. She died just a little while ago.
She was ready. She had an amazing life. She died at home, surrounded by family, the way she chose.
♥ I did get to tell her this morning about the sympathies from those Ace of Spades folks she heard me talk about so often. She smiled and said that was nice. ♥

Well water here. Replaced the pump a couple years back. Earlier replacement was about 17 years ago with a too-much-plastic pump. same-same with sump pump. New pumps have much cast iron.
Also replaced storage tank last year with a larger one.
Do my own plumbing. Good damned water.

In my state, there are senior and junior water rights. Eastern WA agriculture land owners are starting to run up against each other, especially in the dry summers. Some land owners have been shut off at the most inopportune time because their water rights were insufficient.
They cannot even drill for a well without water rights on your property any more, and I vaguely recall some wells being shut down a decade + ago.
Laws vary from state to state. But "grandfathering" your well, *if is still active* , could be in danger if you don't keep it actively in use.
Again, I have no ideas about specific Texas laws on water rights, but I would think that keeping your well active, especially in future years when water sources are tapped even harder than now, should help establish your right to keep using it.
And yeah, if your well water is truly *sweetwater*, then heck YES use that for your regular drinking water. I would think that pumping it into a stainless cistern, then routing into your home should be not to ridiculously difficult or expensive, save for the cost of the cistern.

She had a partial hip replacement, but the fall and surgery took a toll on her. After too many falls and breaks and surgery, she decided enough was enough. She died just a little while ago.
She was ready. She had an amazing life. She died at home, surrounded by family, the way she chose.
I did get to tell her this morning about the sympathies from those Ace of Spades folks she heard me talk about so often. She smiled and said that was nice.

I can't speak for everyone, but if our well goes out for any period, when it comes back on the water is full of dirt. We bought an RV water softener and filter to use when bathing the dogs and it made an enormous difference in the shine and texture of their coats.

Looked at in that light, it makes more sense. When our unit landed in Macedonia it was a wheat field, we set up our tents. They started building wooden "barracks" almost immediately. 100,000 dollars a pop. Plywood. Contracted mess hall service. None of the Army cooks deployed with their units. They don't do that anymore. Everything contracted out at $$$. They cut the military budget, increased the deployments, and spent even more money, because it's contracted out. Road construction, water purification, you name it. No porn in the mini PX though. That would be obscene!
It grew into this HUGE place called Camp Bondsteel. Probably visible from outer space by now.
I remember being home on leave and reading a newspaper article about the "US pulling out of Macedonia", and I about fell out of my chair. Um ... no.

Good idea. I was going suggest simply to download a copy of the latest Linux Mint, and use the "wipe HD and install fresh" option to load it on the laptop.
Linux is such a resource hog as Windows, and those tired laptops perk right up. And Mint is pretty easy to get used to, for a user coming from a Windows background.
Use the Linux laptop for your Web surfing; you don't need to run a firewall. If some malware does manage to brick the machine, just reload Linux from the get-go. It's free.

here in the south, cicadas dominate june, july, and august. That high pitched droning is the background soundtrack to every summer event as long as there have been any. and crickets sound completely different. Sometimes I go out in the back yard and you can hardly hear yourself think because of the racket from the cicadas.

We get annual or "dog day" cicadas every summer here in central MD. This year, we also got the 17 year Brood X emergence. Those 17 year critters were gone around July 1. We've been hearing a lot more cicadas than usual over the past month. Not sure if it's stragglers of the 17 year emergence or if the annuals are just more plentiful this year. Either way, I enjoy the sound they make.

So if the burning times is your concern my first question would be what is your source of power? I have a 1hp Drummond irrigation pump from Harbor freight that I use with my auxiliary holding tanks for watering the gardens. It supplements my well. Pump works fine but it is not self priming so you have to make sure it is primed every time. It ran about $180. I also have a higher budget Pacer 1 1/2 hp pump for water transfer . It is gas operated. How you plan on powering your pump should be your first question.

Fairly well, I guess. Mom is always guarded when she talks about Dad, because she talks on speaker mode and she is usually with him, so he can hear everything. His dementia is different than Alzheimer's. He still knows us. He likes my beard. He smiles and touches his chin. He laughs at our dumb family jokes. When me and my siblings are with him he is genuinely happy. But he can't talk to us. He does not get angry or mean. He gets sad. That hurts.
Suffice to say, I am really stressed about going back to Montana this weekend. But Mom and Dad need me.

Might have something to do with his country recently got bigly fucked over when the Obamunists canceled the Keystone XL project. That was arguably an even bigger deal for them than it was us.

The combination of misuse and overuse of the word has become a pet peeve of mine. Also redundant words after abbreviations (such as ATM machine and PIN number). And use of the non-word "irregardless".

We do the same with "always". We now substitute it for "often", which is quite expressly *not* always. The same thing happened to literally. It's ironic.

I learned about electricity from an old shop hand everybody called Mr. Twitchit, because he kind of shook a little all the time. He taught us to always check for a hot wire with the back of your hand, because that way when your muscles tighten when the electricity hit your hand will be pulled away, rather than grabbing onto it. He showed us how to do on a hot wire. The weird thing is that I think he liked it.
I never touched 480, but I touched 220 and lived to tell the tale. I didn't like it.

I've had really good luck with Duro Max water pumps
I've got a 2-300 gallon tanks on a trailer I built with a 3 inch pump between them
It's amazing how fast the pump fills the tanks, less than 5 minutes
take it down a 1/4 of a mile to a bridge over the river. It's so balanced, I can use my Foreman to pull it
pulls it easily, just can't stop it on an incline

I have gotten a taste of 277V (hot to ground voltage on 480Y systems) in my younger 'lectrician' days. Ummmmm, doggies!, as Uncle Jed would say.
I have never experienced 480V hot to hot before, but I know some who have. They do not recommend the experience.

Once upon a time there was a sysadmin who heard beeping coming from an IBM SP rack. Now, those things aren't supposed to beep, as they have no transducer to make noises.
He called IBM, who said it shouldn't be able to beep. They sent a tech out who didn't believe it, until he heard the beep. So they arranged to shut down all 8 nodes in this rack.
The big day came, and the nodes were shut down, then the power disconnected. And still there was a beep. That's when the tech looked up and spotted the smoke detector.

I'd argue that they inadvertently ensured that Obama got elected POTUS in 2008. If they'd waited until Obama picked Edwards to be his VP (which you knew was coming, and which Edwards was angling for after he knew he wasn't getting the nomination), it would have torpedoed the campaign. It should have been the October Surprise that year.

Obama's Achilles Heel was his obvious inexperience. Sarah Palin shored up his right flank sufficiently to keep him close.
He blew it when his people Wallace and Schmidt sabotaged Palin with his blessing (because he couldn't bear admitting that he needed her help), and when he bone-headedly paused his campaign during the financial crisis. He placed his political future in the hands of Pelosi and Reid, and there was no way they were going to let that opportunity slip away from them.

And really, it is not a surprise at her age to retire from sports. I don't really want to get into a whole debate about "kickball" but my BIL who was a professional soccer play played one of the positions where they had to run all the time. I think it's called something else now, but it used to be called a wing and he was retired by the time he was in his late 30's and he went to several different jobs afterwards and did well. Megan and her wife, WNBA all-star, Sue Bird, are treated like royalty by the Seattle-area media. I'm not exaggerating in the slightest.
Sue has been in the WNBA, playing for the Seattle Storm for something like 17 years now. Before she hooked up with Rapinoe, she was a good interview and friendly to all. She still is like that, but has also adopted some of the militancy of Megan in some of her appearances.
As sour as Rapinoe is nearly every time in front of the camera, Bird is the opposite.
It's a big mystery to me why they hooked up, but then again, there are many couples who could be asked the same question, regardless of which side of the street they walk on.

Having a well is a blessing, indeed! I have a similar deal: city water for household, and use the well for all that stuff that tends to run up the water bill...watering the yard & garden, washing cars, siding, etc.
For SHTF, you might look into a solar generator to run the pump, alternating use between the well and other (small?)appliances.
I bought one, but haven't yet unboxed it, so can't speak to whether or how well it will perform in real life. I understand that actual math is required to calculate how much juice to allot for specific applications so I'm probably screwed there. But for smart folks like you, might be worth considering.

Malone is discussing the idea of the "noble lie". The US govt. does a lot of that. A bunch of experts think they know best, and that the general public is a bunch of idiots, so they have to be treated like children. We tell them lies, cover up the truth, because they can't make the right decisions. We will make the decision for them, and tell them sweet lies.
It's exactly how you would treat a child related to a complex medical decision. Suppose a child has some serious disease, one which he could die from, or be severely messed up for life.
There are treatments available, some risky, etc. A complex risk vs benefit analysis will have to be done. The child is not capable of doing that himself.
So, you the parent have to make that decision. When you do, you're going to tell him little "noble lies". We're gonna make you better. You're not gonna tell him that what you're doing has a certain risk of doing this bad thing or another, but you've decided the benefits outweigh the risks.

With politicians and experts, they are rarely required by anyone to tell the absolute truth. They are instructed (or decide) to speak to a greater narrative and if the truth pops in it's probably a coincidence.

Butte "died" many times during my growing up years. I remember the miners' strikes and the shut downs and the Pit slowly eating away many of the landmarks. But the town still survives and has some of the most intriguing neighborhoods in the country. Beats the heck out of the monotonous suburbs in western Washington.

I had hopes McCain would win (well, that Palin would win and McCain would drop dead immediately) but as election approached, my hopes sank. But POC Jesus was pretty much inevitable and I understood it at the time. Didn't like it, knew disaster was coming, but understood. (It was Obama's reelection that told me we're really not seriously serious as a country anymore.)
We were destined to embrace the suck either way, more so than in a lot of previous binary elections.

I'd read some Hoyt on via links from KimDuToit's estimable site. Read some good bits, but soon came to understand that the Firehose of Words was borne from an overstimulated (but talented!) mind. In that I'm too literal a sort to grok the "fantasy" genres, I don't take well to hardcore SF or JRR Tolkien, etc. And her "worlds" were on the outer peripheries of such, and I just clicked off the screen, leaving her to others to read.

I was looking forward to jumping back into Sci-Fi with Darkship Thieves, as I've heard it's really good. But now I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. I agree that USAA is 10 out of 10 - I have my auto and supplemental Medicare insurance with them. Plus a 6.99% credit card. I just want to know if there's ANY woke b.s. to be expected in the future. One of the downsides of being a franchisee. I feel some sympathy for them. If they get the idiot responsible to resign I might consider patronizing them again.
I have a golf trip to Wisconsin in mid-September. We usually hit a Subway a couple of times on the trip because it's the closest place that's open. I'm already planning on bringing up my own lunchmeat and rolls. They will not get another dime from me. I'd rather go hungry.
(And when I was working from the office, I went to Subway was usually 3 or 4 times a month for lunch)

It is difficult, time consuming, expensive and potentially illegal to put in a well in a place with municipal water service. At least in my experience with more regulated towns. Better to keep it alive than abandon what may be very helpful for irrigation in a normal time, or a life saving source of water in SHTF. Should not be difficult to develop the well now on the down low and use t from time to time.

In my experience it's more about lack of attention than graft. When the lot is redeveloped prior to hooking up to the municipal utilities is typically when you change inspectors. I.e. one guy does grading and streets. Another does houses. It's easily overlooked if your civil engineer doesn't follow up.

I would look into the legal situation. Where I live they have stopped issuing well permits but if you have a well you can continue to use it and can maintain it (e.g., replace the pump if it dies).
