Kabul Collapse Cafe: America Is Bat, Baby! Edition

Girl raises four orphaned red squirrels. Very cute.

Getting the last two dogs left in the shelter adopted.

Stray cat decides to be adopted by a fire station.

Reuniting a wild horse with long lost mate.

Two day old kitten imprints on a husky and takes her on as a surrogate mother.

Satanists parading on a peer get involuntarily baptised.

Grinning soyboy gets manhandled.

They do stop-and-frisk a little differently in Brazil.

Ride the lightning, f***boi.

Cometh the Karens, cometh the man.

Two soibois vs. a stop sign. The sign wins.

One question I get asked, maybe 40 times per day, by readers is: "Are baby hippos cute?"

Well, I thought I'd finally clear that up for you.

Yes. Yes they are cute. But, you know, in that ugly-cute kind of way.

Finally, for the chriopterophiles: Attempting to render aid to a very uncooperative bat:

I'll admit, it is difficult to be truly well stocked with bourbon. Inventory shrinkage is a constant, alas. Usually happens during ONT hours, so I'll have to keep an extra close watch on it, then.

135 There seems to be a bit of chicanery going on over at the CDC site on the mortality in 2020 vs 2019 and 2018 - the CDC has completely changed how they compare numbers. In 2019 and 2018 - the total number of US deaths from all causes are compared but suddenly in 2020, that comparison is gone - replaced by "age adjusted deaths" - meaning that over 85 is weighted greater. This method is used in 2018 and 2019 but is it not the over arching statistic you might be interested when trying to figure out if more people died in 2020 (due to Covid) that in 2019. If you know anything about statistics, this is called "hiding the ball" - yeah, age adjusted, more people died in 2020 because a lot of people died age over 85 than in 2019, but did that mean in real numbers did more died in 2020 than in 2019? - doesn't appear so. About - the same....

I rescued a Siamese kitten when it was a few hours old and raised her with my cocker spaniels. When she grew up she still smacked them around and she does that with the new cocker puppies.
They drive her crazy. I always wanted her to be more like the dogs, but nope she is all cat.

Sometimes the old lady cats just put out the discipline because they are annoyed, or to keep up the impression that they are not to be messed with. I've found that a cat that really doesn't want to mess with the kitten/puppy crowd can't be found or is up high. Those that keep 'accidentally' run into the kittens is faking it to some extent - and those sleeping but wiggling the tip of the tail are not fooling me one bit.

You can rest assured they have all the "biometric data" and all that identifying info. That's why they want everyone to "reapply" for repatriation, not because they destroyed such a databse in an abundance of caution - as any sane person or one would expect - most likely because they lost it, hacked, sold it, gave it away etc.

I struggle with that, like it doesn't come naturally to me.

The other day I was bartending at a wedding and the venue had these big giant sliding doors that could be opened when the whether is nice or closed.

So I'm working my ass off at the bar and some older lady comes over and says "Help me open these doors so we can leave" and I get a little perturbed, because I'm obviously busy and there is an exit open that went up some stairs.

So as I'm opening these doors I'm thinking to myself "Too good to go up the stairs. What are your legs broken" in an irritated internal voice.

Then as I turn around, I realize she's pushing a handicapped person in a wheelchair. Sorta felt like shit. But I thought, why didn't I assume the best instead of getting irritable in my inner voice?

346 Biden's days numbered? Even the Atlantic is after him.

"I'm getting sick and tired of hearing about morality, our moral obligation," Joe Biden said in 1975. "There's a point where you are incapable of meeting moral obligations that exist worldwide." At the time, he was arguing against U.S. aid to Cambodia. But he could just as easily have said the same about his decision this year to end the American presence in Afghanistan, a catastrophic mistake that has led to a Taliban takeover, undermined our national interest, and morally stained Biden's presidency.

It is the latest blunder in a foreign-policy record filled with them.

I will concede my list trends toward the modern and that some may disagree with it for that reason.

I would love to hear any contrary opinions. That being said here are my top five.

5- Lenin. He led a successful revolution against an longstanding regime and is arguably the founder of the modern totalitarian state.
4- Hitler. He came from nowhere. Remember how he was dismissed as the "Australian corporal." Yet he went on to become the symbol of evil forevermore.
3- Washington. Father of his country. The greatest empire the world has seen might well have not have come into being without him. He has been called the indispensable man.
2- Lincoln. A martyr. Greatest orator. Emancipator.
1- Luther. Made Christianity what it means to us today.

Some guys on my road, who were most definitely not me and my buddy, didn't want a light there.

One night they got completely wasted and turned that fucker over into the ditch and then kicked the shit out of it. It weighed 600lbs, at *least.* The dumb cops took it for repairs and put it back up, so they did it again. Then it was gone for good.

What has this country come to? Another guy who definitely wasn't me had wussy road signs like that hanging all over his garage as a kid. But he knew how to use a wrench.

Not exactly. The article says British paratroopers and has a picture of parachutes in the sky. But 2 Para was already on the ground. They are not jumping in.

What they ARE doing is going out into the city and picking up UK citizens.

Which US troops are not. I think that the deal that allowed the 82d GRF to land at HKIA requires that they stay there. I heard on the radio that we have 5200 troops in Afghanistan now. I don't know how many of those are in Kabul.

442 Haw Haw - MSNBC reports tonight that the Texas Dems have returned triumphantly to do their duty after their heroic stand off with the Texas Governor!

Um no, they were about to be arrested and held in an Austin County jail for eternity until they complied with the Governors orders as directed by the Supreme Court of Texas - but only after they appealed to the Federal District Court (like the Feds have jurisdiction over state matters) and then being denied any hearing by the Federal District Court - see, this is the media and this is how Dems work in unison - every clearly foreseen set back is a travesty of justice, damn it! And every bench court ruling with no jurisdiction or authority is a Haw Haw! in your fucking face victory, dick heads!

Learn this lesson well GOP and you will succeed against these complete shit for brains.

456 > 1- Luther. Made Christianity what it means to us today.

*sigh*

This is what's wrong with Christianity as Christopher R Taylor defines it. I like to think of it as the "Christian tradition."

Jesus, Moses, Isaiah, and Abraham didn't make your top five list of history's greatest, but Luther did.

Luther certainly didn't make Christianity what it is today. That was already laid out by God, Jesus, and His Prophets. Luther changed the Christian tradition for some people.

It's the same problem as CRT's Christian tradition centric version of Christianity. You're not "Christian" unless you embrace a tradition that was decided by men hundreds of years after Jesus' resurrection. That tradition supersedes even the teachings of Jesus in importance. One can believe everything Jesus taught, and still not be Christian according to his Christian tradition metric.

Hitler came from nowhere. His old man was a low-ranking member of the civil service in Austria. A postal inspector or a customs agent, or something like that, if memory serves. He died when Hitler was a little kid.

He and his mom and aunt lived reasonably well on the old man's pension, until he pursued a typically penurious career in the arts and wound up as a near-indigent in Vienna. He defected to Germany, joined the Army, and got gassed half to death in the war, and then became a snitch for the police in Munich, where he again defected to the people he was supposed to snitch on, and became a Nazi.

He was a nothing his whole life, until, you know... the thing.

Obviously a key player in WWII, which I previously established as the most significant event since the Enlightenment, and he even got an "ism" named after himself. I tend to rate him as a very important background influence, but not a direct participant.

I'm sure they exist from the store, but I've been pretty lucky with vacuum sealing and/or wrapping to keep out the ones that search for it.

Long, long term? I've got some I've been testing, wrapped and sealed (different bags) for about three years now. Maybe I'll go cut into it this weekend and see.

I believe some people drop in a small chunk of dry ice, then leave the lid just sitting on LOOSELY for a while (putting the lid on all the way is a recipe for a boom, probably not a dangerous one, but unnerving). CO2 is heavier than air so it will displace the air as the dry ice sublimates. Probably some experimentation on how long it takes to sublimate would be in order.

I recall a liberal mag years ago that did a list of the most influential people in history. I forget who they listed as number one, but I know they put Paul in the top three. They did not exclude Jesus because most historians of any faith know HE is a historical figure. They listed Paul higher, but again, it was just some rag. They had an argument though. Certainly no one spread the faith as far and wide as Paul did.

Close. Tiny shells from microscopic animals.

Unlike most shells, which are calcium-based (oysters, snails) or chitin-based (crabs, lobsters), diatom shells are silica-based (like quartz or glass), which makes them very sharp. Walking through diatomaceous earth for a bug is like walking through razor wire for you or me.

I'm very impatient. As a result, I always have this giant jerk lurking at the edges of my conscious pushing me to be dismissive, short attention, etc.. I've always had to stomp that down. Having a kid brought it into real focus though. You have to have bottomless caverns of patience within you. I have to stop the million things going on in my head and listen and interact. Which is stupid, I know, I'm halfway through a century and haven't learned that skill. It's great with kids to see the way their minds work things out and discover things.

I was in confession once and was telling the priest that I was impatient with a bunch of people. And that was the last bit I had so my mind was all, "well I guess we're done here" and I got up about half way to leave when I heard the preist start in on the penance and prayer. I very slowly, as stealthfully as it is possible, when you're about two feet from a person separated by a screen, kneeled back down. It was a fight between not laughing at my self and being so upset at myself and embarased.

Today, the State Department announced a former US Ambassador to Afghanistan was sent to Kabul to "negotiate with the Taliban." Negotiate what? I believe it is under the table payoffs to the Taliban to not kill any US troops and let civilians pass. In reality, ransom for Joe's political life and legacy.

After he died, his Roman Catholic opponents started a campaign of telling people he committed suicide to try and discredit him - except that everyone who was actually with him when he died testifed that was bullshit.

671 669 Joe can threaten the Taliban with Armageddon, but would he pull the trigger? The Taliban will have busloads of women and children driving alongside the vehicle of every Taliban commander, parked outside every Taliban HQ, barracks, and ammo dump, and in their parks of captured US vehicles. Guys with video cameras will be stationed a safe distance away from each target above.

Gref - read 661 - everyone in this God forsaken region needs us. They literally would shrivel up and die if we so ordered it - and it would only take the balls to tell everyone that is propping up these drug king pins that that is the case - they can't eat each other. The opiod and heroin trade is what keeps these Taliban drug lords in power - that gets dried up by some US muscle - get ready for the red carpet treatment.

We could have done all that at anytime in the past 18 years. We didn't. Why would we do it now? Big Money is at stake at home and abroad. Joe is ultimately expendable to the people pulling his strings Joe is over several barrels, at home and abroad.

I spent a lot of time (long ago) in 2d Bn training for just that. It's a bread and butter mission.

673 Really? Can you name anyone else from more humble beginnings who had a greater impact? With the possible exception of Lincoln.

674 People like to think that flour sifters are to make sure you have a nice and even dusting of flour.

To be fair, it is a good way to dry mix your ingredients for quick bread and muffin batter so you don't over-mix and get those large fissures and holes

675 Could you preserve it by putting in sealed, food grade 5 gallon pails, and displace the air with inert gas?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 19, 2021 08:11 PM (ps9Qu)

that is exactly what you do, frozen CO2 works, that or put it in the freezer for a week sealed air tight, that also kills the eggs.

If you are storing wheat berries, beans or corn you can put a lit candle or a lit wad of cotton soaked in alcohol in to burn up the O2, but don't do that with flour since you may get a fuel-air explosion instead.

676 And I want to process ghee, which will mean trying out the new pressure canner to seal it up.

>>Can the Biden-Harris administration order the Ambassador back to Afghanistan?

We completely vacated the building and complex, we do not have any bases of operation.

People have to come to grips with what went down.

The US has bugged out of Afghanistan, we no longer have any meaningful or defensible presence in the country.

We would have to invade again to have a presence there or exert any control.
