Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() We should blame President Bush, not for the decision to attack into Afghanistan following 9-11, but for his decision to “shift the goalposts” and attempt to reform Afghanistan society. That was a fool’s errand any student of history would have recognized. And yes, we should place blame on President Obama for his decision to double down on failure when he “surged” in Afghanistan, rather than to withdraw. However, most of the blame belongs to the leadership of the US military, and the Army in particular. The Washington Post’s “Afghanistan Papers” detailed years of US officials failing to tell the truth about the war in Afghanistan, “making rosy pronouncements they knew to be false and hiding unmistakable evidence the war had become unwinnable.” That report was two years ago, and the stories within it began more than a decade before that. Afghanistan was, and always will be, “unwinnable”.Our military is broken, and while that isn't news to most of us, the damage is at the top, and it has destroyed the effectiveness of our armed forces by catastrophically changing the core principles of the military while allowing unprecedented involvement in our political process...something that is anathema to every honorable officer with a cursory knowledge of the Constitution and the UCMJ. I am reminded of Eisenhower's "In the event of failure letter" which he wrote before D-Day. He knew that he was expected to succeed, but that he was responsible regardless. There is no rational argument that can be made absolving the United States military from responsibility for the ongoing outrage in Afghanistan. Those in authority knew that the collapse was imminent and were incapable of managing a safe withdrawal for the military and all of those dependent on America; in which case they were incompetent and should be fired and held accountable. Or they did not know, in which case they were incompetent and should be fired and held accountable. Resignation is a time-honored response to orders, or lack of orders that fly in the face of duty. Acceptance of the status quo is in this case agreement with the status quo. There is a third explanation which is unfortunately possible...that they knew what was about to occur and allowed it because that was the plan. In which case it is a criminal matter. Regardless of the circumstances that led to the Afghanistan debacle, America has been done a disservice by its political leaders, who have allowed such chaos to reign over what was once an honorable and competent institution. As the letter suggests, we need to return to a time in which the use of the military was driven by the needs of America, not the fantasies of a globalist elite or the frantic demands of nation-building fanatics. The lives of our servicemen are far too important to be used as pawns in a game played by people who are comfortably removed from the effects of their decisions. The honor of America is far too valuable to be squandered in the span of a few months as if it were a political tool. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

++++ I suspect it has been squandered not in a few months, but over the course of around thirty years. The honor has been consumed, just like the political, social and real capital of the country. It is now very apparent that we're running on momentum, but we didn't draw down the reserves during Biden's 211 days in office. Like many others around these august pages, I grew up respecting the armed forces, was the son of a veteran, and had immense respect for the dedication and sacrifice of our military. My default was that it was competent and intelligent and patriotic and understood its place within our society and our political structure. It was unique in an otherwise mediocre collection of government programs and departments and branches.
What has driven my lack of respect for the armed services (and bear in mind I am talking about the leaders and not the man in the field) is the determination and eagerness almost daily displayed to use the military not to defend America or her interests, but to actively punish, persecute and kill Americans who oppose the Democrat junta. I feel the same way about the police. With their eagerness to enforce mask diktats, arrest MAGA protestors and stand down while entire cities burn, any respect I had for them has also gone down the toilet. In order for this to be true, there is one root assumption that you absolutely must acknowledge and accept without question: that Trump would rather humiliate the country, thrust her international affairs into chaos and run the risk of destabilizing not just America but the world at large in order to ensure that Biden didn't get a major win. This is absurd on its face, as anyone who has ever listened to Trump for more than a few minutes - let alone watched his policy and diplomacy - knows. I have a lot of books about the history of the presidency, the founding of America and even a couple of 1930s schoolbooks about "democracy." It is actively painful to read them now; even the books written in the 1960s and 70s have a naive innocence about institutions, the Founders and America that are nothing more than sick jokes now. One book has a whole chapter about an old man who dresses up in his finest clothes every November to cast his vote and the text talks about what a sacred duty it is to be an involved, informed citizen. You can imagine what anyone reading that tripe now would say. Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at August 19, 2021 10:12 AM (2JVJo) 73

CBD, today you're picking on the military and its crashing fall from competence, but every day you could pick an aspect of American government/society and do the same.
We are being run by idiots. How they got there is a mystery, but there they are. Every important part of our lives being controlled by the government would be a good first step to a reversal, but that would still leave military, economic, educational, LE, etc. to be run by idiots. They say there's a lot of ruin in an empire and there is. But it is not infinite. Posted by: OneEyedJack at August 19, 2021 10:13 AM (z79tQ) 79

The destruction of the military began in Vietnam. But it really accelerated when the Democrats cut off funding for South Vietnam. I watched that happen locally. We were ordered back to the States. And the officers ordered all kind of chickenshit stuff on the way back. Stuff like sea-bag inspections. I got gigged because I did not bring a set of winter style uniforms to the South China Sea. I did not GAS though, I was down to the short strokes on my enlistment. I had about 30 days and a wake up.

Biden is back to totally ridiculous lying.
President Biden in an interview with ABC that aired Thursday said "no one's being killed" in Afghanistan despite reports of at least seven deaths amid the chaos at Kabul's airport and of Taliban beating people on their way to the airport, as he defended his handling of the American withdrawal from the country. One can have respect for the armed forces while loathing our general class. Honestly, since WW2, has America really respected any generals? Schwartzkauf is the only one that comes to mind that has really garnered much respect. Ridgeway and Lemay. We respect and can revere Grant and Patton, but they were accomplished leaders. We can respect Eisenhower and McArthur, they were winners. There is simply no general worthy of much respect since WW2.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at August 19, 2021 10:31 AM (Q9lwr) ++++ Women *must* be put into Selective Service. I am opposed to women in combat, but there are logistics and support roles in the armed forces, and they should be a part of the draft. They have equal rights and the right to vote, but none of the obligations to enter the draft. This is grotesquely unequal and unfair. There is a reason the Suffragettes never had a majority of women on board, and this is it. Most women at the time believed - foolishly, as it turns out - that if they were given the vote, they'd be expected to have their number called up and go serve. And this was a much higher risk then, as men were drafted all the time for things like road works and fire brigades before everything was professionalized. That wasn't worth the vote to a majority of women at the time. Most of them didn't expect the free ride that they got. It's time to end it. Women belong in the Selective Service if they're going to be equal and have the vote. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 19, 2021 10:39 AM (3p5uk) 234

My mom was 17-18 during WWII and cleaned the fuel tanks of bombers in Alameda. She was a tiny little thing, so she could fit. Remember stories of cardboard shoes and such. But she was far from alone. There's plenty of things to be done in all areas of the military, that can be performed even in a wheelchair. They don't respond or react to reality. They don't change course if Reality conflicts with their plans. And there are no consequences for them if their plans end in catastrophe. Kathleen Kennedy tanks a multi-billion dollar movie franchise and is given tens of millions of dollars a year as a reward. Joe's ridiculous position that "he knew" there would be chaos goes into the overcompensation category. He's aware enough to be aware that he's lost many of his already low-quality marbles, and is super-sensitive to calling his acumen and work ethic into question.
So, diminished-capacity dunce that he is, he leaps to the position ("yeah I knew that would happen") that makes his personal capacity look the best, ignoring the inherently evil, if not criminal nature of such a position. And as to work ethic, I truly believe this is a significant part of the leadership vacuum. When you work a few, half-days a week there's simply no opportunity for even capable subordinates to hash out their case "to the Chief Executive" and so I think there's a huge amount of simple deferring and drift going on, apart from the truly awful substance of whatever thought Joe is capable of contributing. I believe Joe will claim a "heart condition" in the next month and retire from office. Not saying Pres Harris is an improvement. But I don't get a vote on that. Think about it: a vessel enclosed away from a life-killing environment (the deep ocean), cruising for long periods with plenty of supplies, using equipment (sonar and periscope) to obtain data about what surrounded us . . . very Star Trek-like, I thought.

I very naively thought that once the service academies opened to women that inclusion in the draft would happen. On the other hand opponents were yelling did we want to see our daughters in VA hospitals too, which angered me because I had both a son and a daughter--it rubbed me the wrong way that I would accept the sacrifice of one over the other. And then women did enter more jobs in the military and I've seen the get out pregnancy method of getting out become common. At this point I'm so tired of "feminism" that it seems time to ban women from most jobs in the military again--and I'm an 'ette.

Exactly. Heinlein during his lifetime said that the novel states more than once that *any* civil service post would qualify you to vote once you get out, but I've scanned that book carefully, and I don't see any such detail. It's mostly about the military. He does make clear, I think, that you can't vote until you are honorably discharged.

Our military is truly broken if this ex-military officer never learned how accountability works in the service: The officer in charge at the time of whatever disaster occurs is the one responsible, not someone 20 years prior. Because that officer is in charge and required to make policy and anticipate anything that must dealt with. If he or she fails to do so, tough shit. He or she is still responsible. Fucking pathetic trying to blame a president from 20 fucking years ago. Posted by: Sharkman at August 19, 2021 11:05 AM (/6dlA) Posted by: m at August 19, 2021 11:05 AM (6dJKT) 392

'The military is broken'
I knew this for myself as lower enlisted E-4 when Shinseki had us all start to wear previous ranger color black berets instead of patrol caps as some kind of ideological push. This one small stupid action for me told me: 1.) Changing a hat apparently makes a statement to people in charge... despite the implications. 2.) Implication one: we all now can wear a hard earned beret we ALL KNEW was hard earned. And me, I wore it for nothing other than being regular Army, no special schools outside of previous mobile signal unit. I was ashamed to be required to don it. 3.) Top brass really don't have a fucking clue anymore. The fact a Marine General is worried about faggot relations shows me we are already too far gone. In addition to the main point of this article, that our politicians and military leadership have degraded our armed forces by becoming too political I would add that the recent round of an emphasis on critical race theory and white supremacy is changing its primary mission of protecting the United States from external enemies to pointing it directly at the very people it is supposed to protect. Effectively, the military would no longer serve the United States people but the political ends of the politicians that are ostensibly supposed to be controlling it. One of the hallmarks of the United States military is it it's unthinkable that a US soldier would take up arms against its citizens and hunt them down and kill them. The propaganda from the current political and military leadership that one half of the population are racial terrorists certainly seems designed to not only make that thinkable but that they may actually do it.

I've been wondering how long it would take for people to realize that, as a senator, Biden had an intimate, front row seat for the US withdrawal from Vietnam so the idea he had no ideas or inclinations about how it could go is simply not credible. If Biden is still as sharp as Democrats insist, it's obvious, given his experience, that he allowed this to happen the way it did so that the Taliban could sell our military tech to Biden's benefactors in China and Russia.
