From the Tate:
Popularly known as 'Lawrence of Arabia', TE Lawrence became famous for his exploits as British Military liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916-18. In 1919 he acted as adviser and interpreter for his friend the Emir Feisal at the Paris Peace Conference, where John painted many official portraits, including one of the Emir. ZOD, nice.
Related, as I've said before, if you ever visit Jordan, which is a nice small country to visit, while you're down at Aqaba ("Aqaba, Orrence, Aqaba!") to visit Petra, which you will be, also make time to tour Wadi Rum. It's as spectacular as it appears in the movie, which was shot there, and your tour guide will be a descendant of those who rode with Lawrence to take Aqaba from the Turks. Our guide's father rode as an extra in the movie - all the extras were sons/grandsons of the Howeitat who did so. Sadly, however, we didn't encounter anybody as memorable as Anthony Quinn playing the tribal leader, Audah Abu Tai. Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at August 19, 2021 08:47 AM (OTzUX) 109

According to a 2017 Government Accountability Office report, the U.S. military transferred roughly 75,898 vehicles, 599,690 weapons systems, and 208 aircraft to the ANDSF between fiscal years 2003 and 2016. And according to a recent Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction analysis, the last few years have seen the Defense Department send the ANDSF more than 7,000 machine guns, more than 4,700 Humvees, and more than 20,000 grenades. This is to say nothing of the communications, explosive ordnance disposal, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) equipment transferred to the ANDSF over the course of two decades as detailed in the GAO report. According to the Intercept, the Taliban have even seized U.S. military biometrics devices "that could aid in the identification of Afghans who assisted coalition forces." My brother and I used to make CD's each race we went to out at Texas Motor Speedway. I made one one race that was kind of a patriotic / America thing. It started with an elementary school class reciting The Pledge of Allegiance, then to Jimi Hendrix's National Anthem. Then I did some pro America instrumental themed, then decided to do a 9/11 thing where it went a bit dark, followed up with some somber tunes.....It turned out pretty good. Bro said, "well, we don't have to make another disc...."

According to the Intercept, the Taliban have even seized U.S. military biometrics devices "that could aid in the identification of Afghans who assisted coalition forces." Serious question for my fellow morons. Why did we have so many non-military Americans in A'stan to begin with? If we still, at this point, have anywhere from 5k to 10k...that is not a small number. BIDEN: Sh-- why wouldn't China say that? Look, George, the idea that w-- there's a fundamental difference between-- between Taiwan, South Korea, NATO. We are in a situation where they are in-- entities we've made agreements with based on not a civil war they're having on that island or in South Korea, but on an agreement where they have a unity government that, in fact, is trying to keep bad guys from doin' bad things to them.
We have made-- kept every commitment. We made a sacred commitment to Article Five that if in fact anyone were to invade or take action against our NATO allies, we would respond. Same with Japan, same with South Korea, same with-- Taiwan. It's not even comparable to talk about that. That was inelegant dodge. The question wasn't about obligation, but about competence and ability - and how the fuckup in Afghanistan is already being used for propaganda purposes by adversaries against NATO allies. This is a non-answer, and a poorly constructed non-answer at that. O.k. Given the comments on the conservative RC website, "Church Militant" cardinals shouldn't be casting stones about homosexuality since Church Militant makes it sounds like there is a lavender mob in the clergy and some have tended to prey on conservative, heterosexual seminarians. What is that, 2% if you use 50 as the number jabbed? It probably tracks with VAERS side effect percentages, however no one knows how accurate that data is due to under reporting. Just to cite one example, Penn Medicine states on their consent form that reporting side effects will be the responsibility of the consumer. This is directly contrary to PA Department of Health requirements; the provider is obliged to report adverse effects. Posted by: kallisto at August 19, 2021 09:11 AM (DJFLF) 287

This withdrawal ploy looks like the last best chance for the warmongers to get the USA embroiled in a shooting war in Afghanistan. What happens when the rescue teams have to venture out and get fired upon (probably by an FBI informant). What happens when 5,000 Americans are held hostage with 50 or 100 leaving the football stadium in two or more pieces. And every piece of equipment now has to be replaced.

Well worth a watch. Posted by: MAGA_Ken at August 19, 2021 ========= The Hays Code wasn't in full effect until 1934. It technically existed in 1931, but it wasn't really enforced. I really like the gimmick of spontaneous old song usage, though not in a musical manner. although, Peter Medak the director used the same gimmick in his next flick "A day in the Death of Joe Egg" and it really doesn't work there. "Pennies from Heaven" used it too and it only works there about half the time. so, I guess it's great gimmick for the right director on the right film at the right time. There's an insider from one of the boutique home video labels (Kino) who comments on a message board I frequent. He sometimes talks about the financials in vague terms, and it seems to me like Cleopatra would be the kind of thing that they wouldn't make a whole lot of money on so they wouldn't pay much for it. Silent films don't sell all that well outside of Chaplin.

It looks like people on the ONT were discussing how it is that everything became so broken. My theory is that something like Gresham's Law applies to people in organizations, just like it does with currencies in economies...
Large institutions are powerful, so they attract wicked people like flies to honey. The best you can hope for is to keep the corruption to a manageable level. The problem is, the corruption grows over time, and never shrinks. No matter how vigilant you are, *some* corrupt bastards will slip through the filters, and they're the most dangerous ones: the smooth, smart ones who easily hide their corruption behind a facade of probity. They're the ones who will easily advance through the institution to a position of power that enables their corruption. Once a few of these guys are in, everything accelerates. They rip down the filters so their corrupt pals can advance easily, even the grosser and less competent ones, while impeding honest men, who are a threat to their scam. Decent people stop wanting to join up, and those who do are ruthlessly kept down. Soon you hit the point where corruption becomes total. We got there, society-wide, about 25 years ago. 394 The other day I mentioned the Theda Bara documentary The Woman With the Hungry Eyes, which is on YouTube. The producer originally wanted to box it in a set with Bara's other four surviving movies, but no-one, not even Kino, wants to do it. I was lucky enough to get an advance DVD of the thing, though I was not "in" the Bara world enough at the time to be consulted on it.
Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at August 19, 2021 09:30 AM (2JVJo) ========== That's unfortunate. There's a lot of movie history that's just languishing in film cans with no one willing to do anything to scan it in. Even for those that do get scanned, it's a quick scan of substandard materials that end up not seeing the light of day, hiding away forever in studio hard drives. You'd think they'd be willing to, at least, push out as much onto their streaming platforms to just add to the appeal in some limited way. I have never read any Ian Fleming novels. What is the difference between the character and the Hollywood portrayals. Is the whole idea of international playboy in the films but not in the novels? Anything else?
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at August 19, 2021 *** Bond in Fleming's novels is less of a playboy for sure. He keeps regular office hours at the Ministry of Defence when he's not on assignment; he even got stuck on an office committee at one point. Usually he gets involved with only one woman per book. He feels fear and of course pain, and cares about the woman he's having the affair with. I'd guess Connery's portrait in From Russia With Love comes about the closest in some ways. I'd read Moonraker and From Russia With Love; those are 2 of the best novels, though I love Doctor No. Fleming was a master at inserting the right details, and at managing suspense and excitement. Some moron posted an essay a few days ago called, "Farewell to Bourgeois Kings" (https://is.gd/WDA2rE). It is worth a read if you haven't read it yet.
It is not just that the elite class is incompetent -- even kings could be incompetent without undermining belief in monarchy as a system -- it is that they are so grossly, spectacularly incompetent that they walk around among us as living rebuttals of meritocracy itself. It is that their application of managerial logic to whatever field they get their grubby mitts on -- from homelessness in California to industrial policy to running a war -- makes that thing ten times more expensive and a hundred times more dysfunctional. To make the situation worse, the current elites seem almost serene in their willful destruction of the very fields they rely on for legitimacy. Mary Astor had an interesting life. Very beautiful but unlucky in love. One of her husbands falsified her diary to gain custody of their child, the diary was damning enough without the falsified parts. He obviously lost but she was indeed having an affair with a famous playwright, Kauffman maybe? The diary was locked up in a bank vault for several years before it was destroyed. Think also that, as with lauded classic books, you have to view or read it at the right time in your life? I read the Dr.Jekl book about 7 years ago and was surpised at how brief the story was - probably because I've seen so many versions of the tale in movies, tv, other books, that I had assumed that a lot of the embellishments of the copies were in the original. Also, if you've seen knockoffs of a movie plot, the original loses most of its ability to surprise you, which can be disappointing. Posted by: Lizzy at August 19, 2021 09:53 AM (bDqIh) 520

Posted by: Joe XiDen - Delta Delta Delta Can I Help Ya Help Ya Help Ya Variant at August 19, 2021 10:02 AM (EUHCU) ========= I like all three, but it's not about liking them. It's about a certain brand of film fan that holds up a very narrow set of recent films as the best ever, and they go out of their way to make it known at every opportunity. A filmbro is described as a film fan who has a very narrow knowledge of film and spends all their time defending the unsung classics like The Dark Knight. Trump"s fault!
Cheri Jacobus @CheriJacobus Now that we know Trump was setting a booby trap for Biden in Afghanistan, start pulling that thread. If you were out to sabotage Biden, think of every step, every move you'd make, and then understand that's what Trump did. Trump, Pompeo, Putin are enemies of America. He wants his three demands. A hundred thousand in cash, getaway car and I want the letter M stricken from the English language. See, you have to make one crazy demand, that way, if you get caught, you can plead insanity. Ha.... Getaway car. Posted by: SMOD at August 19, 2021 10:08 AM (RHGPo) 579

In the books Bond is not lavishly equipped with gadgets. In fact they make it clear they are poorly funded. He gets a loan from Felix Lighter ( the US government)in Casino Royale so he can continue to play baccarat

If you have never read Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", you should. It is one of the very few books I would ever impose my recommendation for. Beautifully written, captivating, and very educational in understanding that part of the world even today.
Whether they intentionally followed it, or arrived at it on their own, our special forces have followed his same approach to the area and people. Posted by: CTim Bo at August 19, 2021 12:42 PM (GXrTQ) 588
