Related, as I've said before, if you ever visit Jordan, which is a nice small country to visit, while you're down at Aqaba ("Aqaba, Orrence, Aqaba!") to visit Petra, which you will be, also make time to tour Wadi Rum.
It's as spectacular as it appears in the movie, which was shot there, and your tour guide will be a descendant of those who rode with Lawrence to take Aqaba from the Turks. Our guide's father rode as an extra in the movie - all the extras were sons/grandsons of the Howeitat who did so.
Sadly, however, we didn't encounter anybody as memorable as Anthony Quinn playing the tribal leader, Audah Abu Tai.

I've never watched LofA all the way through, but movies with sand in hot climates don't grab me that much. Brief Encounter is a "small" movie whereas LofA is a "big" one, but I'd prefer BE myself.

My brother and I used to make CD's each race we went to out at Texas Motor Speedway. I made one one race that was kind of a patriotic / America thing. It started with an elementary school class reciting The Pledge of Allegiance, then to Jimi Hendrix's National Anthem. Then I did some pro America instrumental themed, then decided to do a 9/11 thing where it went a bit dark, followed up with some somber tunes.....It turned out pretty good. Bro said, "well, we don't have to make another disc...."

Lawrence is kind of the ideal epic. It's huge in scope without ever losing sight of the intimacy of the actual story, Lawrence's efforts. When you break it down, the whole movie hinges on about five characters total. Instead of overstuffing it, Lean found the balance between epic and intimate that the story really required at 4 hours. It takes its time, but it's established a world, its societies, and a World War along with its characters, really giving each the right amount of time to fill out the narrative space.

David Lean is one of my favorite directors. Among others, I also like John Ford. We just watched "Drums along the Mohawk" starring Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert last night. Even my son who is used to big special effects-because he's a young person- thought it was beautifully filmed and a great story and I thought Edna May Oliver who played the feisty old lady did a great job.

I've gotten to like Carol Reed's movies. He directed The Third Man, of course, but also a little-known thriller-drama called Odd Man Out with James Mason; The Stars Look Down from an A.J. Cronin novel; and a kind of proto-James Bond thriller, Night Train to Munich with Rex Harrison. All good films.

Quite literally the only thing I remember from it was that it was told very strictly from the kid's perspective, and in order for information to pass to the audience the kid had to listen to conversations that a kid wouldn't care about. I found that weird. I think I remember that I liked it overall. It's been a while, though.

I have enjoyed A.J Cronin novels. although I am not familiar with that director. Just watched "Journey To The Center Of The Earth' the other night. Son loved it.It brought me back to my youth when they used to have this movie on T.V. James Mason was a very good actor and the tension he has with Arlene Dahl (who plays the wife of professor who was killed) is quite good. I had never seen Arlene Dahl in anything. She was beautiful and a good actress. We are going to see if we can get "Mysterious Planet" another movie I recall from my young days,

There's an insider from one of the boutique home video labels (Kino) who comments on a message board I frequent. He sometimes talks about the financials in vague terms, and it seems to me like Cleopatra would be the kind of thing that they wouldn't make a whole lot of money on so they wouldn't pay much for it. The Hays Code wasn't in full effect until 1934. It technically existed in 1931, but it wasn't really enforced. Before 1934 it was studios dealing with individual censorship boards across the country. Scarface was banned in parts of the country but not others, for instance.

One of my faves.
I really like the gimmick of spontaneous old song usage, though not in a musical manner.
although, Peter Medak the director used the same gimmick in his next flick "A day in the Death of Joe Egg" and it really doesn't work there.
"Pennies from Heaven" used it too and it only works there about half the time.
so, I guess it's great gimmick for the right director on the right film at the right time.

The other day I mentioned the Theda Bara documentary The Woman With the Hungry Eyes, which is on YouTube. The producer originally wanted to box it in a set with Bara's other four surviving movies, but no-one, not even Kino, wants to do it. I was lucky enough to get an advance DVD of the thing, though I was not "in" the Bara world enough at the time to be consulted on it.

That's unfortunate. There's a lot of movie history that's just languishing in film cans with no one willing to do anything to scan it in. Even for those that do get scanned, it's a quick scan of substandard materials that end up not seeing the light of day, hiding away forever in studio hard drives. You'd think they'd be willing to, at least, push out as much onto their streaming platforms to just add to the appeal in some limited way.

Bond in Fleming's novels is less of a playboy for sure. He keeps regular office hours at the Ministry of Defence when he's not on assignment; he even got stuck on an office committee at one point. Usually he gets involved with only one woman per book. He feels fear and of course pain, and cares about the woman he's having the affair with. I'd guess Connery's portrait in From Russia With Love comes about the closest in some ways.
I'd read Moonraker and From Russia With Love; those are 2 of the best novels, though I love Doctor No. Fleming was a master at inserting the right details, and at managing suspense and excitement.

The biggest difference is Bond doesn't have his one-off quips like Dr Kananga having "an inflated opinion of himself." He's a rougher, more self-doubting character, too. And he doesn't always get the girl.

Good points! There is humor in the Bond novels, but never comedy, more of a dry humor. Fleming's Bond is not a wisecrack artist like Philip Marlowe or Parker's Spenser.

There are a few gadgets or gimmicks. His briefcase in FRWL contains hiding places for some gold coins, his silencer, and a suicide pill (which he promptly flushes). And there's the Homer, the tracking device, in Goldfinger. But he's not gadget-laden at all.

I'd put Live and Let Die up there too. I find You Only Live Twice to be boring and ultimately ridiculous. Thunderball has its moments, but since Fleming was essentially writing it as a movie script, it doesn't quite hold together as a Bond book.

Yes on all 3. Bond is at his best when he's by himself, or with the girl of the hour as his helpmeet. Having him surrounded by a bunch of Navy frogmen is dull. LaLD is great and builds to one hell of a climax. And YOLT, while filled with fascinating details about then-modern Japan, runs a little slow because of it.

The odd thing is that Fleming thought the story would eventually make a good movie. And in the '50s, John Payne optioned it for a time with the idea of making a film with, I guess, himself as Bond. It might have been good casting.

Think also that, as with lauded classic books, you have to view or read it at the right time in your life? I read the Dr.Jekl book about 7 years ago and was surpised at how brief the story was - probably because I've seen so many versions of the tale in movies, tv, other books, that I had assumed that a lot of the embellishments of the copies were in the original.
Also, if you've seen knockoffs of a movie plot, the original loses most of its ability to surprise you, which can be disappointing.

I think this might be why I never got the fascination with the Dune books. There is much there, of course, but the premise struck me as decidedly mediocre. Maybe because "space Arabs in jihad over supplies of a precious and necessary commodity" just doesn't have the alien undertones for anyone who grew up in the 90s.

Yes. They carry the same guided munitions as the F/A-18s and the big bombers, but few of them on each drone. But they do have a looong loiter time.

I only saw Casablanca for the first time about five years ago. I'd been avoiding it because Bogart isn't one of my faves, and as I said above, I had to watch it more than once. I do enjoy it now.
Sunset Boulevard I adored from the start, even though I knew the Burnett "Nora Desmond" skits. There's something darkly beautiful about the movie that takes my breath away every time I see it.

Yep. I read Atlas Shrugged three times and it just so happened to coincide with being in my early 20's, 30's and 50's.
I found, for me at least, monumental different takes on the content. I expect that was from my age related viewpoint.
