Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread kick back and take life easy. Please enjoy the world of animals.

Regarding today's opening photo, no arguments from me.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Is your dog confused? Perhaps you are confusing Fido. Things that we do to confuse our dogs.

A neat site submitted by our thirst friend, redc1c4. Pets in the family. Thanks red.

Meet The PetMorons

Daisy Winter Gear.jpg

(Daisy)

Essie and Mercutio.jpg

So I decided to share pictures of two foster dogs that I helped find homes for. The first one is Daisy. She went from racing in Florida to being in Maryland for the winter. She knew that being bundled up meant that she was going outside. Thus the reason for the less than amused expression.

And this is Essie. She and our cat Mercutio bonded over a fascination with squirrels.

Hope you all enjoy! -NR Pax

Great submission, interesting poses. If you ever come to visit us here at Casa Misanthrope please come when it isn't winter. Poor Daisy will freeze her ears off.
Thanks for sharing your pets with us today.

This is Pearl. She's been in the Pet Thread once before. But now she's a senior dog. She's got renal issues, a heart murmur, and she just had a lipoma removed from her tail. And now her tail is infected. She's really unhappy.

Every trip to the vet is a tribulation: she's mind-numbingly terrified of the vet. I mean, deeply, truly, scared witless. And I just had a fight with the vet and now I'm fired. Gotta find a new vet. Which has the added joy of the shortage of vets...

I guess we're both unhappy. - Moronette "Lee Also."

Dang! So sorry to hear about the health and vet issues. We are all pulling for you to find a new vet and that Pearl gets great care. Thanks for sharing.

Zippy (1) (1).jpg

This is Zippy a 12 year old male chihuahua. He got adopted early last year by an elderly woman who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. The daughter was about to just give him up to a pound when she found her moms paperwork (thank you dear lady for keeping it!). She contacted us and Jan, our adoption coordinator said we will take him back, he's a Shep's dog. If anything doesn't work out, we take them back. So.. he's a very very sweet boy and if I didn't have Moose here he would have a new home! I mean...look at those eyes!!! - Jewells

So sad to hear of Zippy's master passing. But how wonderful that he ended up back with you angelic people instead of a pound. Good luck in finding him a new home.

Dear KeepersOfThePetThread,

Still a LONG-time lurker, still just call me DadVan. I introduced y'all to Fili (L) and Kili (R) (named after the two dwarf brothers in "The Hobbit.") in FEB2020; I owe an update. They're now ~two years old, and while originally they turned our lives upside-down, they've helped keep me right-side up during the last year plus (I'm sure other Morons know what I mean). They've also helped keep the American economy strong by costing me much money, including the recent purchase of a robot vacuum to keep up with their hair. Sleeping was still the only way to get a non-blurry picture...

I'm not quite sure how you look yourself in the mirror in the morning. Those poor abused kittehs. Now they are being chased by a robot. All kidding aside wonderful photo, I bet that was a difficult pose to come by. Thank you.

Well the In-Box was pretty light this week. Then it dawned on me that I forgot to give out the pet thread address last week. If you have something pet/animal related you wish to share you can contact us here at petmorons at gmail dot com.

Until next week, God willing and the creeks don't rise we will be back next Saturday. Have a great week!

12 Regarding the hand movement thing with dogs, one trainer, who gave up on Conor FWIW, said that small dogs really don't like a hand looming over them, even if it is bearing a treat, because their upward vision is not that great.
Thus, to give a small dog a treat, your hand should be roughly at nose level so that the dog can easily see what you are doing and will not get upset as your hand approaches him (preferably with a treat)!

14 Got back from vet a couple hours ago. Old Dog is doing pretty well, implication being why is he still around; New Old Dog with a spleen cancer is doing very well, but we need to get his weight up and just before we left I noticed a red swelling on his lip which I thought at first was a bug bite but turned into an abscess of some kind; and Old Cat is doing well on his thyroid pill every day, we just need to see how a tooth cavity is working out.

We are all exhausted and youngest kidlet (who is paying for all this) is muttering darkly about transferring funds etc.

18 aw that stinks about getting fired by your vet! "LeeAlso"!

I'm sure our vet has wanted to "fire" me a few times - both Chows and Eurasiers are not good at the vet. At all. I'm not too proud to muzzle tho but even then there's the head butting

The vet LOVES our new bengal kitty tho! he's very very popular. he's been awesome btw except he likes to walk around up high - on top of things - including picture frames which keep falling down and breaking. I am probably going to just give up on framed photos and have photo-canvases done to replace them. those don't break when they fall

b/c there's no stopping a bengal from jumping straight freaking up in the air. it's insane. he's about at a six foot leap straight up from the ground!

25 Two of the big, feral cats (Creamy - short for Creamsickle - the orange/white guy and Callie, the fluffy, beautiful, blue-eyed calico, have come around the backyard recently. Pretty Girl chased Callie off. However, PG hasn't bothered Creamy and I've managed to get within about 7 feet of Creamy while tossing kibble to him. We hung out in the backyard for about half an hour the other night. I'm hoping he gets used to me and finally comes up. PG is mightily territorial though. The raccoons even steer clear of her.

26 Oddly enough, the time/money expenditure for the elderly pets doesn't seem to bother anyone because the oldsters are out having fun most of the time, so if they are having a bad day, it is not automatic end their suffering.

30 As expected, the pets this week all are exceptional. I just don't know how they do that.

We've been having a heat wave here in the Willamette Valley the past few days. The highs been in the low 100s. When it gets this hot the Mrs. and I sleep outback in hammocks because we don't have AC. Bella our remaining pet likes to sleep at the foot of our bed. With us outside and separated from each other she spends the night jumping from one hammock to the other constantly waking us up. So now my hammock is under the Doug fir trees in the back yard and my wife's hammock is under the date palm tree. The cat, now thwarted, has decided to sleep in the papa san chair in the gazebo.

Our vet and staff love our guys. A tech told us Peanut was the coolest dog ever and that we were great owners.

32 As regards the top picture, yeah. I'm pretty sure I was sent Scotty the stray kitten as one of those angels without wings. Landlady and I saw him on the front lawn, she encouraged me to try to pick him up and then take him in.

This was about 6 months after my husband died, so it wasn't a hard sell. He took to me, I took to him, and by now he and Ron's dog Lucy (age 7+) are playing together. So I firmly believe God sent Scotty to both Lucy and me.

43 One really nice thing about the vet visit today was I didn't have to mask up and nobody coming in or out was masked. Busy practice on a Saturday and the only mask wearers were the vets and staff. My vet is pretty much the same. No one on staff from the vet down to the receptionist bothered masking up. Some of the customers do, of course, but a lot of them (like me) don't bother. I guess they figure they already have robust immune systems because they work with diseased animals all the time.

51 "I'm sure our vet has wanted to 'fire' me a few times"

Working as a vet tech, I got bit in the face once. Hurt my feelings more than it hurt my face - the fact that a dog would be afraid of me (I'm a dog person). The scar improved my looks too LOL.

Silver lining though. The vet was a PITA to work for, and as I am bleeding all over the floor she's lecturing me "if you would have read patients file first you would have known he doesn't like having his paws touched! It's right...oh...sorry"

Little Miss Can't Be Wrong had forgotten to note that in the file. The look on her face was almost worth the bite LOL

66 26- There's a lot (and growing) hatred for older people. I'm not a John Mulaney fan because he has a distinct, disturbing bias against older people...we shouldn't be allowed to vote. I saw five minutes of a recent performance of his & turned it off when he mocked older people. Five minutes in.

I believe that healthcare rationing for 'useless eaters" is in the wings; maybe Medicare cutoff at 75, and means testing Social Security. Assholes like Mulaney normalize this.

To quote Primo Levi's Periodic Table: "In the real world, the armed exist, they build Auschwitz, and the honest and unarmed clear the road for them..." So do the amusing and the famous.

69 Yay pet thread!

A little rain and some relief from the near-100's temperatures finally. Cats were grateful. Humans, too.

Charlie the Yeller (looks like Fili in the pic above) proudly brought a sizeable mouse into the house this week. Seemed disappointed when we threw him back outside. Again. Ungrateful hoomans! At least he didn't drop it in the house.

Spirit, the old gray gal, had some shedding problems, but they seem to have cleared up. We could make at least one more cat from the fur she left everywhere.

Ony the Black wants me to mention her here, so there she is. She likes to be on the bed, or nearby, when we sleep. Or, sometimes, sit on top of us.

Our cats don't cuddle like all those sweet pictures. They mostly tolerate each other is best I can say.

That's the pet report from Rancho Webworker.

75 MegaRoy, the little 'm' moron cat has discovered he can interupt my shuffle of laps around the house whil I'm doing PT. He doesn't ambush me, he just flops down in the hallway and spreads out so I have to stop amd pet him. He knows I'm crippled up and this is his way of ensuring that I know he still wants to eat my face if i die. I'm just happy his 16 pound Maine Coon ass hasn't decided to have an alpha cat boss battle with me while he's stronger than I am.

80 Re: SFGoth's question @29. This is not Victorian but might be a forerunner. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, preached in one of his later sermons (late 1700's) that, if we will be restored to our pre-Fall status after death, surely the animals will be as well, which he pointed out was a reason to treat them kindly. He was a supporter of William Wilberforce.

And his brother Charles wrote a humorous hymn about his cat.

82 Yes, the Shark robot vac is essential. But in my house it's used daily to get up litter that always tracks out of the laundry room/cat bathroom into the hallways. It was well worth the purchase.

For the fur all over the house from my goblins, I got several Chom Chom pet rollers from Amazon and they work like magic. I have a furminator comb for them but only one girl will tolerate it for a little. My crazy black cat comedian runs away as fast as she can if she sees me with it.

83 Yesterday, my A/C failed (it's back now) and the house climbed up to about 83. My husband and I were fine, but Bogie was a total infant about it, despite putting out a fan for his personal benefit. Even when the temp fell and the windows opened he acted deprived and attention seeking. None of my much furrier Spitz dogs acted like this. And he's got a much shorter coat.

Just sent up a very specific prayer that you get blessed with a porch dog. Markus Barkus Rufus Dufus O'Malley is a porch dog. Showed up about 16 years ago a frightened damaged puppy. Our best dog ever, Ralph was a porch dog. Showed up one morning with a forlorn looks and huge paws. Grew into those paws, all 170 lbs of him. Sometimes you are blessed by them finding you IG. Thus the prayer.

92 Have you seen the price of a Cone of Shame? The vet charge for them is practically extortion. We have two that we've reused over the years. A medium sized one for the bigger dogs (Nikki, Heather, Digger, and Breccia ) and a smaller one for the Yorkies (Tralfaz, Happy, Chipmunk, Sasha, Trooper, and Finnessee). The smaller cone also worked with the cats.
