Outlasting Woke

wokemill.jfif

Mark Milley is furiously paging through his dog-eared copy of Robin DiAngelo's White Fragility looking for a solution to Afghanistan.

Noam Blum

Check out the thread.

It's funny how frequently woke scolding comes at the expense of actually doing the thing you're supposed to be doing.

Time for Biden to go to Camp David and for the Joint Chiefs to check their Twitter feeds.

The Taliban outlasted the waffling westerners. We can outlast the woke.

QUOTES

J.J. Sefton pull-quote from Victor Davis Hanson, (Above the Fold 8/2):

Politically correct ideology is masking and contributing to the widespread failure of our institutions.

Seen on Facebook - The late Neal A. Maxwell, an official in the LDS Church, speaking to students at BYU in 1974:

You're soon going out into a world full of marshmallow men. . . there is no core to these men, there is no center, . . . We are in a world of people who want to yield to everything - to every fad and to every fashion.

From a piece by Matt Taibbi on the vanishing legacy of Barak Obama, party animal.

It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.

-- Leo Tolstoy

Interesting piece by Peter Wood from a couple of days ago: From 9/11 to 1/6:

As the Taliban move in for the kill in Afghanistan, we once again turn away from the hard questions about how to sustain American pride in the face of people who abhor us and what American values mean if the world meets our ideals with contempt. One answer to these questions is a counsel of capitulation. Let us admit that we are now and always have been a rotten nation made up of hateful, conniving people who only pretended to be good.

That answer has always had a few cynics in its corner, but it has become the presiding doctrine of the American left, a development which is itself one of the defining consequences of 9/11. At some point in the months following the attack, as the momentary sense of national unity cleared, the left began to adopt the 'we-deserved-it' narrative. Not everyone was as outspoken as Ward Churchill who called the office workers in the World Trade Towers 'little Eichmanns' or the Revd Jeremiah Wright who preached a sermon shortly after 9/11 that said of the attack, 'America's chickens are coming home to roost'. But in a quieter way, these ideas took hold. President Bush's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq crystalized the left's narrative that America's bellicosity was the problem. We had more to fear from domestic mistreatment of innocent Muslims than we had from Muslims bent on mass murder.

This muddled view has birthed a generation that has nothing but misgivings about American virtue and American power. And it lies in the background of a brand new attempt to sacralize a new date: January 6, 2021.

The irony is that the Democrats' relentless exaggeration of what happened on January 6, 2021 might succeed in giving us the breakthrough realization of what happened on September 11, 2001. We will see that our leftist elite hates America and fears and despises that broad swath of the American people who reject their betters.

Then came this:

terrrerthreats.jfif

There are some details at the link above.

At least if you believe the government's public statements, our intelligence agencies and military totally missed the Taliban's plans to rapidly take over Afghanistan (along with all that sophisticated military equipment we failed to remove). But they are certainly right about the threats above, don't you think?

Peter Wood doesn't think so. He is writing a book.

Random Note:

It was apparently the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztecs yesterday. You may recall that the Ethnic Studies folks in California want to revive the Aztec gods to replace the white Christian God, but as woke gods - not as true Aztec gods.

Music

Don't let them take over your life. Their ideology is not sustainable. Here's some street music.

Rodney Dangerfield

Can you sing it better than him? Know anybody who can? Under what circumstances? Here are the lyrics. The original version was composed for the opening of the first funicular on Mount Vesuvius in 1880. It was destroyed in an eruption in 1944. The current popular lyrics are not tied to the mountain.

This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Hope you have a good weekend.

Given the Obama-era and the resumed current-day purge of good officers, I can actually see the US military going weapons-free against American citizens whereas the ROE against the Taliban was far more restrictive.

38 I was just a child during the Bicentennial, but I do recall all the left-wing hatred of America that flowed out of the late-60s / Vietnam / Watergate era. There was talk of a "silent majority" of patriots who still loved this country, and then with the Bicentennial, it all came rushing back. Suddenly, the hate-America, "blame America first" leftists became marginalized. I am very hopeful that there will be some form of patriotic, preference cascade that will flush out wokeness in a manner that we saw with how the Bicentennial flushed out the '60s radicalism.

There's a reason corruption is sinful. Vanity, Sloth, Rage... the ancients didn't just throw darts at a wall to pick them. The reason sins are meant to be avoided is not because they are Evil per se, it's because they always come back to bite you in the ass.

So our corrupt elites will be scoring a lot of Own Goals, we have that going for us at least. The real question is if they will burn everyone else to the ground on their way down.

79 There's withdrawing and then there's "withdrawing." Trump wanted the Soldiers home, cut funding for the worthless Afghanistan military and let the locals sort their own shit out.

The flaw the so-called conservative side of the political sphere hasn't quite accepted is that there was NEVER going to be a "win" in Afghanistan.

At MOST, we could have declared early on, "we'll leave once you turn over Bin Laden, dead or alive," and then left when "we got him."

Always good advice. I have no doubt that, just like the 1930s, there are some would-be Hitlers out there looking at the total dicklessness of the entire world over C19 and thinking that their legions of doom could totally conquer everything real fast. But that's an illusion, because there's also would-be Churchills waiting in the wings to displace the Chamberlains as soon as the citizenry allows them to, and would-be Stalins that would bait them into a tar pit.

154 There used to be a bleed-through between the urban Italian and Jewish communities as well. I think Rodney up there singing, looking as natural as can be is a good example. The Jewish neighborhood in South Philly was adjacent to the Italians, and honestly, if you were an outsider, you wouldn't know the difference. Except at Christmastime of course, lol

Italians *really* lit up their homes at Christmas.

"Embarrassing" is the key word. This is why Joe is begging the Taliban to leave the US Embassy Building undamaged. Joe does not want video of the Embassy being blown to bits, behind a group of Taliban fighters near the camera whooping and yelling. Because that footage would be (figuratively)
hung around Joe's neck and reputation forever. Every Republican campaign ad will include it.

202 Funny, I work in DoD and leadership is concerned that folks aren't speaking up and willing to tell leadership negative news. The answer they came up with was a look of 'emotional intelligence'.

I pointed out that given:
1. We are being told to assert men can be women and women can be men, in direct contradiction to reality.
2. We're being told to assert an organization that has been at the forefront of EO, requires annual training on that policy, and enforces EO and holds folk accountable is 'systematically racist'.

Perhaps folks are self-censoring based on a leadership that isn't willing to hear bad news or things they would consider negative. A DoD wide command climate of an inability of leadership to handle negative news.

Try working in a clean room with a hood over most of your face. Not only can you not read lips, you also can't read emotions. It's amazing to see people who would have no problem with each other suddenly at each other's throats because they can't "read" the other person. There's a reason humans have evolved to be so good at analyzing facial expressions, and why it's so difficult for CGI to adequately portray them.

We spent twenty years in Afghanistan because we didn't intend to. Since at least 2009 we've looked for 1-2 year "solutions" which would give us enough cover to leave. And since it was obvious we weren't going to hang around, no one else had any reason to commit either.

The managerial class wanted visible measures of "success" such as women working, girls going to school, but ignored the hidden problems such as the rape of boys and the endemic corruption. My go-to analogy is the West is a corporation taken over by middle management. There's no actual leadership, but they've managed to stay afloat by burning through decades of accumulated capital and borrowing against their productive assets. Now all that has run out and they're flailing. It's the same mentality as the house-flipper: short-term gains based on superficial changes and deception.

235 Funny, I work in DoD and leadership is concerned that folks aren't speaking up and willing to tell leadership negative news.

A DoD wide command climate of an inability of leadership to handle negative news.Posted by: you're in hell the world ended at August 14, 2021 11:30 AM (6Xgrw)

The 'leadership' does not understand why a person is reluctant to give bad news to, and make complaints to, someone who writes his/her fitness report???

And when there are more examples every day in the news of employees being fired for not complying with woke crap from employers in civilian life???

We need military 'leadership' with more intelligence.

They allowed Bin Laden and AQ to operate in Afghanistan for years. The Taliban let a lot of groups operate training camps in the region because it was profitable. I was in a meeting 1.5-2 years ago with a bunch of senior officers asking how the TAG (head of state National Guard) should react to all the racial protests going on. The public affairs officer (O6), thought the TAG and governor should "take a knee" publicly and voice solidarity with the peaceful goals of the protesters.

No one said anything for a minute, so I (O5) said I didn't think that was a good idea, as many Guard members would feel like it was a betrayal of law and order, good discipline, etc. He didn't understand, but thankfully, others were then willing to step up and advise against. Madness.

373 We had four years of decency, sanity and common sense and even flashes of reformist boldness under Trump. For the first time in my adult life I didn't have to wake up every morning wondering what new horror or stupidity was being unleashed on our country. I didn't have to listen to pathetic fools or cretinour liars dissemble and spin and insult me. But that little window of relief and occasional joy has been slammed shut. Now we're back to our regularly scheduled degradation.

So if you concoct a scenario, and say the Church says it don't work that way, the true answer is, oh yes it does. The Church doesn't deny the possibility of a sacrament occurring wherever and whenever God decides it will.

440 I didn't actually read the link by Matt Taibbi, but I hope it doesn't have a connection to the quote by Tolstoy, because Obama was not beautiful. Despite the hagiography around him, he only got elected because he was a smooth talker and lots of people wanted to simply vote for the first Black President. Not beautiful inside or not. If we had wanted to vote for a "beautiful" looking Black President we should have voted for Zombie Sydney Poitier or Halle Berry.

455 What I don't understand, why is it when Trump tried to leave Afghanistan, the military undermined him and essentially stopped hum, but allowed Biden to do it? They hated Trump and did everything they could to fuck him up. Had Trump said send in another 100K troops to Afghanistan they would have also said no fuck you. Posted by: Joe XiDen - Delta Delta Delta Can I help ya help ya help ya Variant at August 14, 2021 10:44 AM (l5FxP)

I have very, very good information on this. Trump said we were leaving, but we were doing so in an orderly, phased way that was based on the Taliban's behavior. He's alluded to this in his press releases over the past few days. He would never have completed the withdrawal at this time of year because this is fighting season. It would have been finished in the winter. Trust me on this one, I have extremely well-placed sources. Biden, on the other hand, did not listen to Milley and Austin. He said get out by September 11 and start now. Right now. They have been "good soldiers," saluted the flagpole, and executed what they were told, but where Trump would listen to them about the best way to execute the mission, Biden didn't want to hear it.

463 Caesar, your info tracks with public info, and with Trump's approach to most things (sensible, normal).

Of course the ultimate collapse of the new order in A'stan was rightly considered extremely likely by almost anyone who knew anything about the place. But a quick unraveling is probably something of a surprise - most had expected regional trouble, with the usual suspects - south and west - breaking away first.

A winter draw-down certainly was the obvious way to go - season didn't affect such an operation much, but was a big factor for the enemy.

And of course the truly jaw-droppingly stupid and humiliating crap coming out of official mouths the last few days ("oh pretty please, Mr 8th Century Barbarian, be nice and follow the rules, or the International Community will be upset") would have been inconceivable under Trump and Pompeo.

Milley's not all bad, but he's not all good either. I think he would see his nonsupport of President Trump as being nonpartisan. I would also not be surprised to see him resign after the withdrawal is completed; he's that disgusted with Biden and his crew. Not saying he will, but it wouldn't surprise me. The reason he wouldn't, ironically, is because that would be seen as the military being partisan.

I didn't see the context of the conversation, so if someone is wanting a "rustic" Catholic wedding, I would hope the Priest will be the one who says "this is not supposed to be for your misplaced desire to have an 'authentic' experience, or whatever you are attempting. If you want authentic, the church building is right here."

But yeah, otherwise if the Romans or whomever have burned down your church, or you're stranded on a dessert island with your priest and your love, or the Priest is going to the front to marry a heterosexual couple, the sacrament CAN be performed anywhere else. No Bishop blessed altar is necessary.

473 Caesar I think Milley has been in way over his head, in terms of the "non-political, political" aspects of his position.

His statement issued the day after the Lafayette Park incident showed that - it was stunning.

Very much more so with the idiotic Nazi-like racist indoctrination (CRT) issue. The CNO seems kind of dumb, not just inept in terms of this aspect of his job - his "there is racism in the Navy!" outburst in response to the teeny challenge he faced before Congress did not indicate much ability, in general.

But Milley's "white rage" comment was dispositive. Instead of side-stepping these issues, or saying anything sensible and difficult to attack ("I was a big admirer of Dr King's dream, his actual ideas, which are really just American ideas, and that's how I have behaved and insist any under my command behave" - something incomplete but at least a little deft like that).

Instead, full implicit/explicit acceptance of the absurd, outrageous racist garbage that is now hollowing out what's left of military standards, and the country's institutions overall? Disaster. Wrong guy for the job.

Posted by: Romeo13 at August 14, 2021 01:37 PM (oHd/0)

475 @rhomboid, it wasn't inevitable. The Afghans are some of the hardest fighters out there. If we had left in an orderly way with logistical support (i.e., contractors) and financial support, as was the plan, they would have been able to hold off the Taliban for the most part. Until a couple of weeks ago, the Taliban have never been able to take a city.

The Taliban are executing a well-planned operation for which they have been preparing the battlespace for months. They started a couple of weeks ago by taking all the border crossings to prevent reinforcements, then having fifth columns inside cities neutralize the obvious places -- police stations, military headquarters. Kind of like what the VC was trying to do in Tet. The Taliban have embedded Pakistani advisors and logistical support from Pakistan as a minimum, and probably China behind that. This is exactly like when the NVA conquered South Vietnam. It wasn't a popular uprising, it was an invasion from outside. In this case Pakistan, supported by China, is using Afghan and Paki irregular tribal proxy forces to conquer Afghanistan.

Never could figure out why weddings weren't done like baptisms in our local RC. Announce that sacrament will happen right after mass and invite the congregation to celebrate. Then the dressed-up families go off to their catered parties and the regular mass attendees welcome a new family to church (maybe with coffee cake in meeting hall for churchgoers).

493 Caesar your A'stan knowledge is direct, unlike mine, but I don't think there was a basis for a sustainable (heh) regime/situation of the sort we created over the years. Not a design flaw in a training program. The inertia of culture and the existing (deep, real) social order.

Look at the quick, massive, and routine defections going on in various places in A'stan right now - just as one would expect. There's nothing really new here, it's the way all of human society worked for most of its history, and the way some places still work. Fear, bribes, deal-making. Tribal organization for self-defense and efficiency.

Just as in Iraq (though less so, actually), I'm sure there are/were Afghans who were actually down with the program, and didn't want a return to anything like Taliban rule. But I don't think they had the social and widespread political base under them that could withstand the erosion that was inevitable. Though, again, this instant collapse seems surprising.

Trump did not have enough people loyal to him to fill all positions.

So he relied on Staff, or Insiders, to fill those positions, ESPECIALLY once his actual loyal folks, like... Gen. Flynn, were taken off the table by the Deep State.

Time and again, his picks for posts could not get through the Senate... and many were personally destroyed by the Piranhas of the Press. They effectively stiped him of most of the Staff he needed, to effect actual change.

501 No, that was Syria. The plan in Afghanistan was always a phased withdrawal as the carrot in negotiations with the Taliban.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at August 14, 2021 01:49 PM (BMmaB)

It was both. The day after he fired Kelly he announced our withdrawl from Syria AND pulled half our troops out of Afghanistan.

Posted by: Romeo13 at August 14, 2021 01:54 PM (oHd/0)

502 It's academic, but I had a hearty laugh when I learned of the "negotiations" with the Taliban. There simply is no basis for expecting that such an outfit is interested in, or even capable of, making a meaningful deal that it wouldn't jettison the first nanosecond they judged it to no longer be in their interest.

I realized from the beginning (as did many/most, when sending in 12 guys on donkeys was our initial response, FOR A REASON) that A'stan was not someplace we'd want to, or be able to - or need to - fundamentally change. So a "bug-out" of some type was inevitable - but nothing shameful or bad, actually an appropriate and realistic strategic move, eventually.

506 Trump had a disastrously bad administration. They were disloyal and worked against his progress. And he picked people that people like us were stanning - Mattis and Bolton for example.

Not sure the cause or effect, but it did not come out well.

507 Once again, a discussion we've had before, personnel was President Trump's biggest failure. There are about 3000 Presidentially appointed positions, of which about a fourth require Senate confirmation and three-fourths don't. Anyone who is Senate confirmed can be the "acting" temporarily, as for a while the Chief of Staff was also the director of the Consumer Finance Protection Board, and as Ric Grenell was confirmed as Ambassador to Germany and served as acting Director of National Security.

The truth is that when President Trump was elected, he had maybe 20 names. He never filled all 3000 of the jobs, even though 3/4ths of them did not require Senate confirmation. Hillary would have started with at least 2000 names and left the other 1000 for her people to hire their people and Obama holdovers. Personnel is policy in many ways, and we just completely dropped the ball on that.

Much as I love him, President Trump dropped the ball on personnel. Never let that happen again.

A lot of Trump appointees were also held up due to the refusal of the DOJ to give them security clearances. I know someone who was appointed to a job largely because he already had the clearance in place.

People like Priebus, Sessions, and the like were not novices who had no "names" to put forth. The fact that Hillary could have filled the ranks leads me to believe that her "people" wanted to carry forth her agenda, Trump's "people" wanted to scuttle it. Not too many people here anticipated that Sessions, for example, was going to be a millstone instead of an asset.

513 Caesar, somebody above noted @natsecjeff for ongoing info feed on A'stan. Check it out. Even Mazar seems gone/almost gone. Just like that. Most of Afghan army dissolved, only one or two outfits left (5 of 7 corps, gone).

Nothing with much of a core disintegrates this quickly, and, while obviously not in possession of full info on each situation, this easily.

I may be a minority of one on this, but I think Sessions was hired primarily to do immigration and did what he was hired to do. He sidelined himself on the Russia thing because they maneuvered him into it, which turned out to be a disastrously bad decision, but I think he did what the President wanted in terms of getting DACA and DAPA turned around, litigating against the Hawaiian judges with the travel restrictions from terrorist countries, and getting court approval for the wall and the stay in Mexico policy. Could someone else have done as well? Probably; it didn't need to be Sessions. But I think he wasn't an unmitigated disaster.

Hell hath no fury like a politician scorned, and as big an asshole as Christie can be, he should have been given something to do. But sending Jared's daddy to prison made that impossible.

If Trump had a personal fault in this game, other than not seeing the snakes and scorpions, it was allowing the fact that certain pols were not "friends" to hinder his judgement. Packing off the Romneys to the French Embassy would have made life easier.

Posted by: CN at August 14, 2021 02:10 PM (ONvIw)

516 @rhomboid, yes, I was just talking to someone about this yesterday in a position to know. When we pulled the plug abruptly a few months ago, the mass desertions started. Everyone could see that they were all alone and there wasn't going to be anyone with their backs, so the #1 priority became taking care of your family. This is exactly like the fall of South Vietnam or the last 2 weeks of the Confederacy; in the absence of a well-planned and led campaign against them, the Afghan Army could have muddled along, but in the face of a Pakistani invasion, the average soldier sees no point in standing and fighting for nothing. Cue Levon Helm and the boys, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

518 @billroggio (another long-time A'stan guy) is also good. He's currently pointing out that the potential for a very, very bad chaotic situation WRT embassy evac is possible, given the geography.

Baghram air base was infamously abandoned recently. Evac plans center around civil airport, which is located in the city. US forces will probably have to establish perimeter to allow airport to operate. But degree, and nature, of local panic and chaos, and what that might present to US troops securing airport, unknowable - but obviously potentially very bad. Plus, rocket/artillery attacks on airport.

Though I am guessing the Taliban will try to refrain from interfering with our evac. It certainly is the smart move, and they have not been without some savvy in the past, on certain topics.

I think the operating assumption is that the noncombatant evacuation operation will take place in a permissive environment, at least insofar as the Talian is concerned, and I assume that our diplomatic people are giving that message to the Pakistanis. The drive from the Embassy to the airport could be difficult, not due to Taliban, but due to locals trying to get out (or set up roadblocks to extort tolls). I don't see any Afghan police willing to die to get Americans to the airport safely.

523 Caesar agree Sessions = mass illegal migration guy (plus first high profile Beltway figure to endorse Trump, which counts, and should count).

However you'll be shocked to learn that I found most of the legal aspects of this disastrous - oh, perfectly fine, even with some small "successes" along the way. But the overall context was one of a failed constitutional system with a rogue judiciary usurping executive, legislative, and political powers, with disastrous results, including a death toll.

And so it remains. Not repudiating the ludicrous travel EO restraining orders, and even the abused consent decree that created the detention disaster for border crossers, was the core mistake.

Yes, repudiating a lawless court is a big step. So is assassinating Iran's top terrorist/military leader. So is slapping tariffs on Chinese goods and weathering the retaliation against ag exports. So is junking the Paris Accord*, and delivering an in-your-face inauguration speech to the national figures sitting 10 feet behind you.

* though doing with this without repudiating the false basis for all "climate" nonsense was a major, major error

Many years ago when wargaming our evacuation plans from the embassy in a different part of the world I was on the bad guy side. The plan was to get our people out by CH-46 and 47 lift to the airport, then C-130 from there. I shot down one of the lift helicopters with an RPG from a highrise building across the street from the embassy grounds. That stopped the exercise and the plan was revised to go out over the ground. Presumably they've thought this through, as long as we've been in Kabul.

Rumor/reports that Afghan prez will evac with US personnel.

82nd Airborne ready unit has been ordered to Kabul. This will bring US troops deployed to assist evac to 5,000.

Report of US air strike in Kandahar area, to protect airport, indicating still some evac taking place there.
