Insiders Say There Is Growing Tension Between Disney's Dueling Heads, Bob Iger and Bob Chapek
Scarlet Johanson Sues Disney Over Black Widow Payments, Confirming the Film is the MCU's First Bomb

Chapek succeeded Iger in 2020 -- but, like Jay Leno after Conan O'Brien took over the Tonight Show, stuck around to provide "stability" to Disney during the pandemic caused by their Chinese partners.

So Chapek was never really the CEO. He always was competing with this other asshole.

And he's getting tired of it.

Iger has his own complaint:

That Chapek harmed relations with their Chinese partners/bosses by releasing Black Widow on July 9th, which bumped into the Chinese Communist Party's celebration of its 100 years of despotism.

So that's Disney, now: Worrying that its release schedule may intrude into the festivities for the Chinese Communist Party's 100 year anniversay.

Hollywood insiders say there's growing tension between the Disney chiefs.

They say Chapek's "Black Widow" release strategy may have hurt relations with China.

Chapek succeeded Iger in 2020, but Iger has stayed on to bring stability in the pandemic.

Tension is building between Disney chiefs Bob Iger and Bob Chapek over the future of the Mouse House, four people told Insider.

One senior studio executive familiar with Iger's thinking said many in Hollywood believe the two men are no longer as friendly as they had been, that Chapek is eager to get on with running Disney on his own terms, and that Iger has been stalling his exit for too long.

"It's just common knowledge. They don't get along," this person said. "It's awkward with Bob Iger around, and it's a long goodbye, and Chapek is sitting there saying, 'I just want to run the company.'''

...

The New York Times reported in April 2020 that Iger was reasserting control because of how much the pandemic had ravaged Disney's business.

"When Bob [Iger] inserted himself back into the company, it was a huge slap in the face. The concern was that Bob Chapek couldn't handle it," said the senior studio executive.

A cinema industry executive familiar with the thinking at Disney said Iger is frustrated that Chapek may have harmed the company's carefully cultivated relationships in the all-important China market with its "Black Widow" release strategy.

Disney's choice of July 9 to release the latest Marvel movie internationally bumped into China's month-long celebrations of the Chinese Communist Party's 100-year anniversary. The cinema industry executive noted that China has yet to give a release date for "Black Widow." Widespread piracy of the movie also threatens to hurt the China box office.

Even the shill media has to admit now that Black Widow is a box office bust:

"The questionable part is the content side of the business, which was Bob Iger's strength. I don't know how much of a learning curve he still needs. He has been open to experimentation, though this last one ['Black Widow' release strategy] is a big one, missing the whole China window," Ehrlich said.

"No Marvel movie has ever seen such a decline in the second week of a theatrical run or even in the Saturday and Sunday of opening weekend. It is an embarrassment. It seems like a mistake. Those decisions go right to the top, but it's still early and we're in very unusual times."

Thanks to Clownfish TV.

I guess they can no longer pretend away the fact that Black Widow is the first true bomb in the MCU (or M-She-U): Scarlet Johanson is suing Disney, because her contract specified she'd get paid points based on theatrical box office performance, and Disney breached the contract by also releasing it on streaming at the same time it was in theaters.

Note she wouldn't be suing if it made a lot of money in theaters. She might have taken a hit, but if she were making a lot of money, she would have worked it out with some kind of bonus from Disney.

The fact that she's suing is official proof the movie bombed.

Scarlett Johansson, star of the latest Marvel movie "Black Widow," filed a lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Disney, DIS -0.42% alleging her contract was breached when the media giant released the film on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time as its theatrical debut.

Ms. Johansson said in the suit that her agreement with Disney’s Marvel Entertainment guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release, and her salary was based in large part on the box-office performance of the film.

"Disney intentionally induced Marvel's breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel," the suit said.

A Disney spokesman said Ms. Johansson’s suit had no merit and is "especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic."

Oh eff right the eff off, Disney.

It was your Chinese partners who made the pandemic you're accusing others of being cavalier about.

The company said it "fully complied with Ms. Johansson's contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 million she has received to date."

I think they did cut her in for a percentage of the on-demand money. They must have done that.

So this is about the film still badly underperforming, and Johanson still not making nearly what she thought she'd make on the back end. And she's claiming that this has to do with Disney's release strategy, which I guess she's claiming depressed revenues both at the box office and from streaming.

Either way, this is a massive, massive admission that the MCU has failed.

And Shang-Chi and The Eternals are still coming up! I can't wait!

Thanks to bonhomme.

In more Bonfire of the Once-Lucrative IPs news, the worst showrunner in Doctor Who's history, as well as his handpicked "Doctor" -- the worst Doctor in Doctor Who's history -- are leaving the show, and leaving it in shambles.

The ratings are so low it is widely believed the BBC may now simply cancel it. And they'll do that partly to spite the former fans who rejected their leftwing propaganda version of Doctor Who.

The BBC has finally confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in television: Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall are quitting Doctor Who.

Quitting. With ratings at their lowest level ever.

Who knows, the BBC is so spiteful and determined to push its woke propaganda, maybe they really were asked to stay on, but realized they were damaging their careers if they stayed on any longer.

The duo have been in charge of the Tardis since 2017 and will be leaving BBC Studios' iconic sci-fi franchise next year. Before they exit, they will bring fans Season 13 this fall and three feature-length specials in 2022, the last of which will mark the end of the Thirteenth Doctor.

It will be a shortened season. It is speculated that they are trying to just get to the 60th anniversary of the show without cancelling it, so they're s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g a short season and three "specials" (which are probably not very special) out over a long period of time so they can limp to the 60th anniversary in 2023 by spending the lowest possible amount of money. Then they'll do a single show bringing in various previous Doctors and cancel the thing.

32 Disney borrowed billions of dollars at the beginning of the pandemic.

Disney just began cruising again like last week. Its fleet of huge cruise ships have been sitting idle, needing constant maintenance, for almost a year and a half. They've been giving those who book passage 125% in credit if cruises booked get canceled (I know someone who's had this happen twice).

Last month Disney started complaining about the lack of reliability on testing, and then suddenly, a few weeks later, the CDC says to stop doing the regular PCR tests because they can't differentiate between covid, SARS, and the flu.

And now its cash cows are failing. Where are the numbers of premiere access for Black Widow? We heard $60 million the first week. Did that continue? Since we haven't heard anything, I'm assuming it's been abysmal.

I think there may be a war brewing between corporate America and the Democratic administration, actually. This new talk of lockdowns cannot be sitting well with a company that's just on the verge of getting back to normal after suffering greatly to get rid of the Great Orange Satan.

Posted by: rd at July 30, 2021 12:40 PM (Z32m1)

I think there are cultural reasons these movie cycles exist. I'm sure they've been written about before. The "Invaders from Outer Space" fad coincided with the cold war, and were a way of channelling anxiety about hostile foreigners trying to wipe us out. Westerns reflected the idea that America was on the rise, expanding its power, reflected by movies about a time when America was expanding its territory.

These oversized spectacular superhero movies, I think, can be traced back to the Transformers movies of the early 2000s. Sure, there were Superman and Batman movies before, but they became an established custom after 9/11. I think the sight of the Twin Towers falling, translated artistically into the spectacle of cities being destroyed by superhuman evildoers, and people were also looking for some equally powerful force to rescue them.

A perhaps apropos story: at one of Walt's birthdays, he stopped by the animators' building. After a song and some cake, he was asked to sit down, whereuopn the lights were darkened and a short animated clip of Minnie and Mickey in flagrante was shown.

Walt appeared to enjoy it, along with everyone, and when the lights came up, asked who had done the short.

When two animators stood up and admitted it was their work, Disney fired them on the spot.

Posted by: Buzzion at July 30, 2021 12:56 PM (vMCab)

==========

WB did that all wrong. They paid a bunch to Gadot and Jenkins to pimp the delivery method, but they didn't inform any of the other talent on any of the other movies that they were going day and date with HBO Max. Denis Villeneuve, who directed the new Dune, even wrote an op-op in Variety about how pissed he was.

WB had to do a lot of cleanup. Also, AT&T is looking to sell WB now, realizing that the studio isn't the massive cash cow they had expected to prop up the rest of the business.

Reminds me of my one visit to Disneyland with my aunt and her family. We had some leftover cheap ride tickets so we went on something called, I think, "Mission to Mars". The one and only "effect" was that to simulate gravity pulling us down, the seat bottoms tilted a bit downward under us. My aunt murmured to me "I didn't expect cheap thrills at Disneyland!"

257 Was Jodie Whittaker the first woman to play Dr. Who and that was the
problem, because she departed from the male doctors, or were there other
women doctors and her character was just terribly unpleasant?

Doctor Who is a man. Casting a woman was always going to be a problem because she could either act as the man we've known for 60 years in a woman's body (hard to do in a children's show) or as a different character claiming his name. Either is going to piss off some segment of the audience. On top of that, Whittaker came in swinging at the fans claiming the show was always made for the male gaze and she intended to change that (which wasn't particularly true, but in any case was Rian Johnson levels of I'm going to deliberately piss off old fans), while simultaneously asserting that there was too much previous material for her to bother watching, so she was just going to wing it. So no matter what combination of choices were made, She had no chance at every portraying The Doctor because she had no idea who he was.

The only reason they did that is because it pisses the feminists off that men die for women. I think it could have been justified if they'd put even a bit of character development into Black Widow. She is a literal femme fatale, but they kept springing storyline changes on us to satisfy the wine box cat ladies.
And as an addendum, who kills a character when they have an upcoming movie coming out? Talk about stupid business decisions.

Posted by: squid_hunt at July 30, 2021 01:04 PM (7MBHe)

263 No once was hyped for this movie, even female MCU fans i know talked about how this was the first movie they didn't care about because the character sucks and it plays little into the overall story.

Scarlett should be thankful they put it on Disney+ because the movie was going to bomb (even without Covid) at least they gave her an excuse.

That being said, f'm all, but F Disney more, because they'll use this to start screwing every day player and below the line worker.

It's time for some rich conservatives to start creating thier own studios (likewise rich black people should do thre same, like Tyler Perry, to get ther movies they want made.) we ignore the culture battles and then cry when we lose, plus most of America, especially now, probably wants just good movies/ entertainment to watch that doesn't preach or doesn't make you send the kids to bed.

265 This is how unimaginative these dipshits are...

I love the movie Jaws, I think it's one of the greatest films of all time.

If you had any talent for writing screenplays, you could easily write three prequels featuring the main characters, with each story leading up to how the got to Amity and are introduced in Jaws.

Then you could write a courtroom/legal drama about the aftermath when Brody and Hooper make it back to the beach, Ms, Kitner brings suit against the town, Larry's ruined and you see the knock on effects of what it does to all of the characters, a wake for Quint, etc.

You know , interesting and compelling shit.

Now we see reports that episode that freaked out CDC was outbreak over crowded July 4th in part of heavily-vaccinated, deep-blue Massachusetts famous for its gay scene. Not a Trump hotspot.

The proper response is not to blame Blue America for outbreak but for those finger-pointing commentators to be a little more circumspect, a little less Trump-obsessed, a little more reasonable. Would be good idea. 3/3 From WP:

303 I just checked the menu. A bacon cheeseburger, a side salad and a soft drink will set you back nearly $20 right there. An appetizer or a grown-up beverage puts you over $25, easily.

But the lower GI distress and sense of shame is free.

That Chapek harmed relations with their Chinese partners/bosses by releasing Black Widow on July 9th, which bumped into the Chinese Communist Party's celebration of its 100 years of despotism.

So that's Disney, now: Worrying that its release schedule may intrude into the festivities for the Chinese Communist Party's 100 year anniversary.

You miss the point of blaming whitey rednecks, they are actually trying to tell blacks and Hispanics to take the vaccine not whitey who has already taken it. You will note that these vaccines numbers never tell you which identity isn't taking the jab. So blame whitey and hope it somehow propels blacks and Hispanics to get it.

Matt Damon related but I recently re-watched that final scene in Rounders. An entire movie dedicated to his card playing abilities and in the final hand he is dealt the nuts against an opponent on tilt. A disastrous end to an otherwise decent film.

They then added having the AI animate the colorized portrait where it smiles, turns the head, blinks and looks you in the eye. The latest one I watched was a French woman from 1874. They even aged her to look like an old woman still moving facial features. It became a little creepy but this will be the future for entertainment. Actors need not apply.

I lament that for cost reasons, there are few really good day to day seafood houses outside of coastal areas. I recall some places in the 80s that were really great. Sure it is a generalization but that has been my experience in this town.

369 there are always the high end places, mostly for tourists etc. But I mean a local joint you can get some good seafood at regularly.

370 From what I've read, the zinc is the payload that HCQ and Ivermectin deliver to kill viruses.

Right, I made a point of taking my daily zinc tablet *after* my dose of home-brewed quinine this past Sunday.

371 Zinc

AREDS 2 vitamins by Bausch and Lomb have a lot of Zinc.

I'm no gourmet or gourmand, but even I thought that the shrimp I had in Albuquerque in 1996 was pretty poor. It had been flown in from Seattle.

Mexican food? Worst I ever had was in a suburb of Pittsburgh. And my lady friend said proudly that it was considered the best Mex place in town. . . .

Yeah, it's movie/tv thing.
I mean, one step forward and that spinning fool is in for a surprise when he sees you again.

I knew a mathematician that decided on MMA as a side hobby. He put in a lot of effort, trained for a long time, but in his first matches was absolutely destroyed. He was a humble guy that wanted to learn so he got to be friends with the guys that took him to the cleaners and they said he was doing silly things that expended energy and they could just watch and then pummle him. Spins, long setup roundhouse kicks, etc.. He learned to concentrate on minimum energy / high impact.

He said MMA peeps were actually a good bunch and would happily beat the ever-loving crap out of you in a match at the first chance while eagerly helping you with life-stuff on the weekends.

377 284 The only Jaws Prequel should be about the Mayor and the Police Chief covering up Shark attacks and how the Police Chief died or was replaced by Brody
Posted by: Patrick From Ohio at July 30, 2021 01:07 PM (dKiJG)

The sequels can focus on if Hooper knocked up Chief Brody's wife and the aftermath of that. A prequel could be a story of why Brody came to be Amity Police Chief.

you see a lot of that. I have seen a lot of that in country areas in the South. If people like it, that is cool, and I mean that. I am jaded I suppose, I judge Mexican food by what you can get in Texas and California.

BTW, I have had it in London and Paris. You would be surprised by the number of Tex-Mex Joints in and around Paris. I am talking three or four btw but they were legitimately trying.

384 Speaking from the movie theater business perspective, this is an important lawsuit from Johanssen. Theaters are almost dead, with forced lockdowns, capacity limitations and general fear. Then Hollywood releases crap, and further undermines theaters with same or next week release on their streaming platforms. They are literally killing the theaters. I'm surprised theater owners haven't filed a class action lawsuit against the studios. This had always been a deal breaker, but with covid, Hollywood decided ah screw it....
So I'm rooting for Johanssen because I'm selfish and want my theaters to get back to normal.
