CADILLAC RANCH

While getting your kicks on Route 66, did any of y’all ever check out the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo?

Cadillac Ranch - 3.JPG

It was completed in 1974, and has been evolving ever since.

The group set about acquiring ten used Cadillacs, ranging in model years from 1948 to 1963. Built along the tattered remains of historic Route 66, the cars were meant to represent the “Golden Age” of American automobiles. Most of the cars were purchased from junkyards and averaged about $200. The cars were then buried nose-down, facing west along the old highway. Those that could run, were driven into the half-burial holes, the rest were hoisted in. In 1974 the project was completed and in no time at all, visitors began to come from all over the world, leaving their mark on the ever-thickening graffiti-covered cars.

WWII DIDN’T END UNTIL 1974 FOR ONE JAPANESE SOLDIER

The Japanese Officer Who Refused to Surrender For Decades After WWII’s End.

Hiroo Onoda didn’t give up the battle until 1974, 29 years after Japan’s surrender. And it took his commanding officer visiting him in the jungles of The Phillipines.

On March 9, 1974, Onoda emerged from the Philippine jungle, his Imperial Japanese uniform—worn since 1945—tattered but in remarkably good shape despite the 29 years of depravation. Officially declared dead in 1959, Onoda was tracked down by Japanese student Norio Suzuki in February of 1974. Onoda still refused to surrender, telling Suzuki that he would not return home until he received official orders. Suzuki returned that spring, this time flanked by a Japanese delegation, the lieutenant’s brother, and [Onoda’s commanding officer Major Yoshimi] Taniguchi. After nearly three decades on the run, Onoda was convinced to capitulate.

A PASTOR ASK THE DESTROYERS “WHAT HAVE YOU BUILT?”

“We can look around and see what wise ones before us have built. But the destroyers are offering no resumé, no accomplishment list, no reason to trust them, just piles of rubble in their wake.”

It’s a moral concept that goes back thousands of years and is documented in the Old Testament - that it is wrong for those who do not contribute to society to tear down what others have built. In his syndicated column, Pastor Bo Wagner of Mooresboro, North Carolina articulates the timeless sin of those trying to destroy the fabric of America.

I am not impressed, nor should anyone else be, by people who are intent on destroying America. People of every race worked through every difficulty, disagreement and disaster to produce a nation so great that people all around the world want to come live here, and yet Solomon would shake his head in bewilderment at the cacophonous cadre of cackling crackpots who are plucking it down brick by brick. They believe it is too flawed to be allowed to stand. But based on the wisdom of Proverbs 14:1, a fair question for us to ask the would-be destroyers is "What have you built?"

THE GROOVY TIE-DYED OLYMPIC BASKETBALL BRONZE MEDALISTS FROM LITHUANIA

The Olympics start again in a few days. Will you be watching?

I doubt I’ll catch much, but I’d watch the Lithuanian men’s basketball team if they’d dress up again like they did when they won bronze in 1992.

In 1991, Lithuania was a newly-freed country, following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Lithuania was needing funds to send its Olympic athletes to the 1992 Olympics in Spain. The Grateful Dead came to their assistance.

Jerry Garcia and his merry band of madmen decided to foot the bill for Lithuania’s Olympic conquest, sending them all the funds they needed plus a huge box of now highly-coveted tie-dye shirts and shorts, created by the band’s own designer. The tees featured a dunking skeleton on a tie-dye print in Lithuania’s national colours of red, yellow and green, and are as insane and great as they sound.

HELLO HURRICANE SEASON

Can you name the great Texas port cities? Galveston, Corpus Christi. Indianola. Indianola?

In the mid-1870s, Indianola was Texas’s second largest port city – second only to Galveston. It had a population of over 5,000 and a great many of the immigrants to Texas in that era came through the port of Indianola. It was destroyed by a hurricane in 1875. It rebuilt and was destroyed again by a bigger hurricane in 1886. Indianola was gone for good.

On September 16, 1875 Indianola was struck by winds of 110 miles per hour – the town was literally blown away. Five or six days later details began trickling in — the news was devastating. One Kansas newspaper called it “The Most Severe Flood Since the Days of Noah.” Initial reports estimated loss of life between 100 to 150, although impossible to pinpoint exactly.

This is a picture of Indianola in its prime.

CAMELS, CONESTOGA WAGONS, AND GLOBAL WARMING

As anyone who “believes in science” knows, hurricanes are caused by carbon-related human behavior, especially sport-utility vehicles and flatulent livestock. So then, what caused the hurricanes that wiped out Indianola twice. Were they caused by Conestoga wagons?

Maybe it was caused by flatulent camels.

In the mid-1850s, the United States continued to expand westward over the great deserts, but travel proved difficult. A transcontinental railroad had yet to be completed, and standard horses did not do well in the hot, arid environment. In 1855, U.S. Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis (Yes, the same Jefferson Davis who would go on to become president of the Confederacy) lobbied Congress for funding for the Great Camel Experiment. He posited that camels could be used as pack animals across the desert, which would more easily connect the distant Army outposts.

Major H.C. Wayne traveled to the Middle East to acquire the necessary animals. He gathered 33 camels, which arrived in Indianola, Texas, in 1856. This herd marched to Camp Verde, where they remained until the army could put them to use. The following year, an additional 40 camels joined them. By June 1857, 24 camels went on an expedition to California, while the rest remained in Camp Verde. After five months, the California group successfully arrived just north of modern-day Los Angeles, completing a trip of 1200 miles. The Camp Verde camels continued to work as pack animals around Texas.

WELCOME BACK CARTER-ERA

Since Joe Biden is bringing back the inflation that made the 1970s so miserable for our parents, can we at least bring back what made the ‘70s so much fun to us kids?

THE WISDOM OF YELLOWSTONE

One of the things I like best about Yellowstone is that it’s the first Western Mrs. Throckmorton has ever wanted to watch. I’m really hoping that it’s a gateway drug to lead her to other Westerns. There are some great lines in each episode. The best might be when Kayce asks John Dutton (Costner) what they’re going to do about the Beck Brothers, and John matter of factly replies, “We’re gonna kill ‘em, son.” Here are some others.

"Your grandfather used to say you can't fix a broken wagon wheel, but you can use the parts to make a new one."

"No one has a right. You have to take a right, or stop it from being taken from you."

"It's the one constant in life. You build something worth having, someone's gonna try to take it."

"It wasn't a move. I'm just meaner than you."

"You are the trailer park. I’m the tornado."

"Where’s the fun in wrecking a single man? When I break you, I want to know I’m breaking generations."

"I believe in lovin’ with your whole soul and destroying anything that wants to kill what you love. That’s it. That’s all there is.”

"I have been down this road many, many times before, buddy. And no one who tried it is alive to tell you how poorly that worked out for them."

"I’m gonna give you one last chance. You leave now or you never leave."

"I’d rather kill a thousand men than shoot another horse."

THE GINGER vs MARY ANN GAME – YELLOWSTONE EDITION

The Ette’s go first this time: Rip, Kayce, or Costner?

OK – now to the women of Yellowstone: Beth or Monica? No shame in casting a write-in vote for the Governor, either. In the event of a tie, Alex The Chick determines the winner.

THROCKMORTON’S FIRST LAW OF LIVE MUSIC: IF THERE’S AN UPRIGHT BASS IN THE BAND, IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE GOOD

Suzy Boggus is a national treasure. She had some chart success, then took her millions of fans on a tour of America’s musical history. Here she is singing a beautiful cowboy ballad.

NIGHT RIDER’S LAMENT - Suzy Boggus

Suzy’s bass player is a gentleman named Charlie Chadwick. He has a folding upright bass. For real – it folds up and fits in a custom suitcase. Take a look. [Hat tip – Powerline’s Scott Johnson]

46 Indianola -

In the Civil War, while Grant was near Vicksburg there was a period where the Ocean Navy had retired south of Port Hudson, so the River navy to the north had a habit of sending steamers downriver past the batteries to keep troops from crossing and also to swipe cotton, since captains and Admirals got prize money for it. So at one point Porter had set a river ram - a steamboat braced up to Bump holes in other boats down - and soon after that a second. The first Ram got up the Red River and ambushed by a battery and surrendered. The Rebs quickly put men on it and sent it back. Admiral Porter in the meantime had sent a second ram, then the ironclad Indianola down as well. The second ram ranged ahead, met the captured ram and was captured as well. The both of them ran into the Indianola, and sunk her just south of Vicksburg in shallow water. Porter was aghast, as now the Rebs had a good navy to fight him with. He, or someone, had a great idea and quickly built a huge fake ironclad with nobody on it and sent it downriver. The workers trying to raise the Indianola panicked and set the boat on fire as they fled. The whole operation cost the navy about 10 dollars.

In the game of identity politics as currently practiced Americans of European ancestry are pretended to have no identity beyond "whitish."

One of the horrific byproducts of this racial racist stupidity as practiced now is we are leaving a wealth of potential amity between Americans of every stripe and hue and their global counterparts "cousins" if you will on the cutting room floor.

If Americans were genuine and sincere in venerating their creed over their personal identity we would be unstoppable in fostering and brooking influence to help guide and shape the world towards a more equitable and productive system.

We are not, and thus Africa is in shambles and Asia is devolving into an Authoritarian-Capitalist-Corporatist system in too many spots.

Good luck.

Quite, they were in the habit of reworking scrap.

I have a soft spot for them, having a smattering of their bloodline. In essence the steppe-tundra folks who came over suffered a reduction in technology, probably as a result of foot speed. They were exposed during their likely migration to budding Chinese technology that probably devolved into a lost art.

One of the saddest parts about the nearly uniform lack of written records by the cultures that crossed the bridge is the absence of the massive cultural shifts and evolutions that took place.

Funny story, not funny in the ha ha sense so much as "history does suffer from time to time from the giggles."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1875_Indianola_hurricane

Indianola was in the habit of being destroyed roughly every 15-20 years or so.

The town competed with and had a symbiotic relationship with Galveston, it was the 1875, 1899, and 1900 hurricanes that eventually ended the competition in the region and led to Galveston's dominance.

Largely a ghost town now, I have considered settling in the area as I enjoy a good storm.

I wonder about that sometimes. It wasn't that long ago that the unifying forces were stronger than the forces of division. It may seem pollyannaish, but I think people want to belong to a country, for the most part, and these folks who seem to be in the ascendance now will wane in influence, and we will come together again. There might be a lot of pain between here and there, but we are fundamentally a decent people who have more in common than we have in difference.

I was an abused child who saw that athletic excellence as being my ticket out, a half decade later I walked with a cane.

That said for a brief 5 year period I was an arguably majestic athlete, nobody who ever saw me do my athletic things jammed a microphone at me and said, "well by golly sven there can sprint like the wind for two miles and run up stairwell bannisters like a balance beam let's reorder our entire society to his whim"

I sincerely and genuinely am at a loss, horrified, and disgusted by this epoch.

250 "I think people want to belong to a country"

No. Inherently people want to belong to a TRIBE. It requires a special bit of indoctrination/ guidance/ upbringing to want to belong to a nation that isn't simultaneously a tribe. And if Americans don't have that pride in being different from the rest of the world, then they aren't a tribe. And, then, you can make them part of the "global village" and rule them for their own good.

And with THAT I'm out.

I believe that too in my heart of hearts - but there is a psy-op game running 24/7 on every form of media. Developed through *billions* of dollars of scientific research into the human mind.

Humans will fight to the death when they perceive a threat, but if you keep that threat imperceptible - or divert the perception onto something benign - humans are predictably weak as fuck against it. We will literally line up for our captors like we're waiting for Space Mountain.

I thought media influence was really waning until they shut the world down and scared more than half of people into total subservience. On the brighter side, the *only* thing the Left can't account for - their only real weakness beyond their own self-righteous arrogance and importance - is God. And He wins.

260 Ah, but do you know the story of the Cadillac Ranch? It is not a story that the Texans will tell you.

The art display was put up near Amarillo (pronounced Texas' butthole) by a rich artist who went by SM3 (Stan Marsh.) He also put up street signs throughout the city featuring wacky art. He was eccentric (because he was rich) but also a huge pervert. He was once busted with a neighbor kid locked in his chicken coop in a partial state of dress.

Many years later, a Houston attorney brought him down for bringing in at risk minors and showing them his bright red paint brush. After years of this being an open secret in the community, he was brought down by an outsider. Died in jail and everybody lived happily ever after if they deserved to.

They even put a sign up disavowing SM3 at the Ranch.

Posted by: sven at July 22, 2021 10:22 PM (Lzpvj)

Your generalized point is difficult to argue with but what does the Left sacrifice? It's pure will to power. They ENJOY destroying shit, we like creating it. We bask in the success of others, they get aroused by misery and failure. We have rules that allow for individual growth and a true common good - while their rules are power, advantage, lying, using and manipulating BAMN.

It is not fair to lay the political end all on some inability to sacrifice pleasures while we support our tormentors. We would certainly be better off if we could stop doing that as a rule, but it would not be anywhere near enough. To defeat them we would have to become them, and that would involve sacrificing our humanity.

Which would be a terrible thing to do. Just terrible. Terrible.

That people will not sacrifice is understandable, in some ways it may even be laudable.

Your point on the veneration of destruction and creation is a valid one, I dedicated my intellectual existence in the understanding of destruction and economics because when faced with what was in my formative years a perceived unassailable foe in the Soviets I sought to do anything possible to end them if the need ever arose.

The right will lose because we are no longer Cincinnatus we will not be as horrific as necessary to do good to forestall that ruthlessness the instant able and return to good.

310 Was it over when the Russians bombed (in) Lake Placid? No!

(Most people don't realize that was not the gold medal game. We still had to beat Finland in the final round, the tourny being a round robin back then. What coach Herb Brooks did to get the USA ready for the 1980 Winter Olympics was incredible. I cannot superlativize it enough. The USA was ranked 7th going in (all college players vs the Soviet bloc's "coal miners") and then went on to dominate, being the only team that didn't lose a game and dealing the Sovs their only loss. 6-0-1 vs 6-1-0. That tournament really meant something, especially in 1980 with the Bear in "ascendance" (as some thought), OG Jimmy Carter (as opposed to the 2.0 we now have) and the USA were really struggling, and most people even in the D.C. area were probably unaware that there was a local NHL franchise (the Capitals, which was on its way to a 27-40-13, it's best record to that date).

311 I was reading an old article about 24 because I remember that idiot Janeane Garofalo joining the cast. The showrunner was a known "right winger" and she was a known "left winger".

Anyway in the article he was quoted as talking about the reasons he hired her, that he'd seen her in some things and thought she was funny and talented, that her politics didn't come into it (that was probably the question that was posed to him). Her quotes, OTOH, were almost entirely shitting on him for his politics and then some additional swipes at what she saw as personality flaws and how he was basically a useless nothing. These archives act as a time capsule - it's all plainly there for us to see (for now).

We needed to stop being mensches for these anthropomorphic cuntrags a long time ago. We still believe in outdated things like "merit" and "politics not mattering 24/7", so when in positions of power we gladly elevate them and give them platforms. And they turn around, take the paycheck and the notoriety, and immediately work on the sly toward eliminating us.

I disagree. We are genetically different. We are the descendants of the risk takers. Whether 10 generations ago or one, our ancestors selected for independence and the ones who stayed behind in the old country selected for dependence. We want to be left alone, but when necessary we will whup ass. I think we have a long future ahead of us.

I sure as fuck can't win a war with them all by myself but I can do my small bit by holding a mirror up to their misery and make them regret waking up even more than they already do. And my reward for that is sleeping like a log and grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

Posted by: Diogenes at July 22, 2021 10:37 PM (axyOa)

*sigh*
Yeah, the politicization of the Olympics should be ZERO. The Left's political agenda slips from hiding when and how they frame questions. There is an assumption of agreement with Leftist views to begin the question.
Of course, this isn't new. Bob Costas, I think now retired, was the standard-bearer of making you feel like shit if you didn't agree with his views.
That was happening a few Games ago, and it turned me off.
The other negative change is that the Olympics is no longer a competition between amateurs. Now, it's all professionals. Not that I watch it any more, but the NBA finals were far better than anything the Olympics men's bb team can offer. The Olympic bb games are little more than D-Leagues. And hockey? NHL big names, mostly. It is not possible for the Miracle on Ice in 1980 to ever happen again. American amateurs beat Soviet and Finland pros.
The Olympics killed themselves. Video killed the radio star, so to speak.

OT, but my brother was out in West Texas this week. He saw Bezos take off from Van Horn. I mentioned to him yesterday that when the wife and I were driving down I-10, we stopped at a Mexican restaurant somewhere that had a John Madden shrine. Apparently the bus stopped there on occasion when Madden and crew were driving through. So about 2 hours later he sent me a picture of the John Madden shrine from Chuy's in Van Horn. It's a small world, even in a very big place.

Brandy and mystery ship were actually pretty cool. I practically grew up at the jersey shore during the summers because my grandmother had a shore house there. I have no idea. And I don't think anyone really knows either. Only time will tell, as they say.

There was a kid in my neighborhood back in the day. Probably 5 or 6 years older than me. He wore nothing but concert t-shirts. He introduced me to sooooooo much good music. One time he brought a boombox outside and popped in Maiden's Number of the Beast cassette. My life changed forever

450 Jim, back when I was taking media classes in college, one of my instructors (Ray Burton was his name, I recall) had a story about when he worked at the Armed Forces Radio station while serving in Vietnam.

It was a rule that every broadcast day began at 5am with a recording of the Star-Spangled Banner. Anyway, one morning after Jimi Hendrix's version came out, one of the DJs had the weisenheimer idea to play that instead of the official recording.

Burton said the next time someone went to the LP library to retrive and play something from that album, they found that particular track full of wax pencil residue. Apparently one of the higher-ups never wanted to hear it again, at 5am or any other time.

Like I said, I was already playing in the clubs and one night at practice the other guitar player showed up with that album right when it came out, and he said looks like they got a new singer with some apprehension in his voice. We put the album on and holy shit, next thing we knew we were learning the whole fucking album one song at a time. It blew us away. We rotated through the songs, but the constants were number of the beast, 22 acacia ave, and hallowed be thy name. We always played those.

I've always and instinctively been highly selective as to the hardware and calibers, and nothing but a promiscuous whore when it comes to ordering ammo by the case.

Likewise, I've always been a bit of an accuracy snob. So, I've eschewed most of the EastBloc gear, going more towards U.S. n' Czech bolties, premium ARs and various premium ammos.

Dollar for Dollar, CZ makes the finest bolties from .22 LR to .458 Win Mag, you can buy.

Seems the VZ-58 variant of the AK ain't much around, any more. But it was superior. But the import stocks thereof have been pretty much sold down. Back to the .22. I recently put a known 'ette onto a CZ-457 Lux. Her 11 y/o daughter was shooting it lights out, iron sights, at 100 yard steel. I know, 'cause I was coaching that session at the range.

CZ is a brand I know. They own the Dan Wesson brand, and that 1911 ain't to be trifled with.

I can't put into words why I just don't jive with music like that. Its heavy, but scattered, and a lot of modern "heavy" bands seem to be like that. Its like they all follow the same blueprint. Want a generator? A good backup generator capable of running you house or a good fraction thereof?

Pay now, you might get delivery in Dec. Maybe.

There are supply chain issues, of course. But methinks a lot of people are coming to the realization that things may go south pretty quickly.

Of course, with a generator, you need fuel. If things go that south where the grid is an issue, then fuel is gonna be a big 'un too. You'd be amazed at how much diesel or NG you'll run through keeping your house running.

Plan accordingly, my peeps on the ONT. I think we'll have warning when things start to go south.

I think initially, I'll drive them to they keel over, just to see what max Karen-power output is possible. If they're still alive, I just shoot 'em. Maybe some of them would be worth feeding to keep going, who knows. Cull out the best of the bunch. The rest, just one and done.

In the past for every Olympics, we'd have traditional fare from the host country for snacks and dinner and watch the opening ceremonies with the kids. Now my kids do the same thing with their kids.

But this year, it feels different for me. I guess all the SJW BS is taking a toll and I really have no interest in the games other than to see what I can in the cameos and the vignettes they have for the areas where the games are held.
