No movie thread today. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Beginner Problem - White To Play (102)

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: First, Cut off Black's escape squares on the 'f' file

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1389)

Goal: Black can force mate in 4
Hint: You'll need both rooks to deliver the mate

Update: 'bof' busts this problem, says it's a mate in 15. He's right. Sorry about that. I really should do a better job verifying the solutions before I publish.

Advanced Problem - White To Play (131)

The forced mate is a ways out. Can you find it?

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20210717 Problem 1.jpg
8/6Q1/8/8/4q3/8/1K2p3/4k3 w - - 0 1

1.Qg1+ Kd2
2.Qc1+ Kd3
3.Qc3#

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play

20210717 Problem 2.jpg
8/2R5/4R3/5p1r/1pPk3r/1P3PK1/1P6/8 b - - 0 1

This was the solution I thought was correct:

1...f4+
2.Kg2

2.Kf2 results in the same line.

2...Rh2+
3.Kf1 Rh1+
4.Ke2 R5h2#

But no, it doesn't work. 'bof' called a mate in 15, and he's right. Here's how it goes:

1...f4+
2.Kf2 Rh2+
3.Ke1

(3.Kf1 Rh1+ 4. Ke2 R5h2#)

3...Rxb2
4.Rd7+ Kc3
5.Re2 Rb1+
6.Rd1 Rh1+
7.Kf2 Rbxd1
8.Re3+ Kd2
9.Re2+ Kd3
10.Re3+ fxe3+
11.Kg3 Rdg1+
12.Kf4 Rh5
13.c5 e2
14.c6 e1=Q
15.c7 Qe5#

I need to do a better job checking the solutions before publishing.

Advanced Problem - White To Play

20210717 Problem 3.jpg
3Q4/5q1k/4ppp1/2Kp1N1B/RR6/3P1r2/4nP1b/3b4 w - - 0 1

The tree is rather complicated:

1.Rb7 Qxb7

There are 5 other options, but they all lose quickly:

(1...Qe7+ 2.Rxe7#)
(1...gxf5 2.Rxf7+ Kh6 3.Qxf6+ Kxh5 4.Rh7#)
(1...gxh5 2.Rxf7+ Kg6 3.Qxf6#)
(1...Qg7 2.Rxg7#)
(1...Bc7 2.Qxc7 Qxc7+ (2... Rxf5 3. Qxf7+ Kh8 4. Rb8#) 3. Rxc7+ Kg8 4. Ra8#)

2.Bxg6+ Kxg6
3.Qg8+ Kxf5

(3...Kh5 4.Rh4#)
(3...Qg7 4.Qxg7+ Kxf5 5.Qg4+ Ke5 6.Re4+ dxe4 7.Qxe4#)

4.Qg4+ Ke5
5.Qh5+ Rf5

(5... f5 6. Qh8+ Qg7 7.Qxg7#)

6.f4+ Bxf4

(6...Nxf4 7.Re4+ dxe4 8.d4#)

7.Qxe2+ Bxe2
8.Re4+ dxe4
9.d4#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Generally yes, but not all moves are checking moves, if that's what you're suggesting. The point I like to emphasize is that you've got to figure out the absolutely best defense. You may be able to find, say, a mate in 2, but is it forced? Is there any other move to defend? If there's a longer line, then the solution is not mate in 2.

181 The UK covid story is really interesting. Massive street protest against lockdowns (largest ever in London) not covered by any media. A few days later, Johnson announces masks and social distancing will end in two weeks.

During that two weeks the daily mail has had wall to wall coverage of people getting the dreaded variant.

Johnson has now announced that all pubs and restaurants must require a vaccine passport.

It'd be interesting to know if having had the covid vaccine makes one sicker with the Delta strain then unvaccinated folks get from the virus. That was the argument from the anti-vax doctor talk. A nurse told me that that effect is very rare, but I don't know that I trust her information sources.

I realize official numbers reported for anything Covid related are questionable but just curious without considering that. I can make my own subjective adjustment.

France and Australia just had a three-test series down under. All three were close.

The Lions are in South Africa about to start a three-test series. The Lions are an all star team from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland that every four years visits either New Zealand, South Africa or Australia. South Africa is ranked #1 in the World.

You can find these matches on youtube and other places.

Something unique to rugby - the players wear numbered jerseys starting with 1, and going up by increments of 1 for each player (1 - 15 for the starting players, 16 and above for substitutes.) The lower the number, the better the man.

White moves Rook from B4 to B7, which pins the Queen. Black can't take the Rook with the Queen because then White Queen to H8 is mate.

There are a number of moves left, but I think it is over, white can counter and get that Queen on H8 for mate. Might have to take the black queen with the rook first.

-Municipal police department are hired by the cities and report to the political structure there. Many different specific chains of command possible with mayors, city council, police commission, police chief, etc.
-The only way that the Sheriff would be in charge in a city is if the city contracts out their law enforcement to the Sheriff's Department.

337 Ok, then rook to A8 sets up mate in 1 move, black has to move Queen to G7 to counter (or King to H6 maybe? I think that is worse)

If 3.Ra8 then 3...Qe7+ (counterattack!) followed by 4...Qxd8 and your attack is shot (I think).

338 334 Artemis - That is true in Florida as well. County Sheriff is the top law enforcement in the county, regardless of what cities are in it.

This is done purposely to sure it is an elected position.

339 More than 334 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through July 12, 2021. During this time, VAERS received 6,079 reports of death (0.0018%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine. (from CDC page)

Honestly why lie about that? Just to say "more than drunk driving deaths in 2020?" If people are scared by the deaths they aren't going to be calmed by 6K vs 10.x K

340 @334

That's the reasoning. And think about it--there has to be a hierarchy, for law enforcement, or else all those alpha males are going to want to do it their way.

341 And correct me if wrong, but I thought PA already had a very significant boost in GOP registration
---------
I have a post that will go up next week that looks at PA registration.

While the Dems still lead in registration there, the Dem party in PA is pretty much DOA.

Regarding Baris, I should have added that he says the Dems will have a hard time competing as long as the GOP continues to follow the Trump agenda. So there is another place where it can go wrong.

343 "thanks, that's him! Paddy Mayne."

His exploits are legend. He won the DSO four times. Denied the Victoria Cross because he was Irish and hated British "suit" officers".

He was jailed for beating up a superior officer who had killed his pet dog while he was away on a mission. He may have been recruited by Stirling out of jail, it's unclear, but it adds to Dirty Dozen legend.

His early thing in Libya was to put .50s on jeeps and raid Nazi airfields. He's personally credited with destroying over 100 Nazi planes.

Nope, Black Queen to E7 or C7 will be taken by White Queen and check.

I think my solution works.

345 Don't know about Florida, but in California, cities have their own law enforcement and it is *not* under the domain of the county Sheriffs (unless the city contracted the Sheriff's Department to provide services).

For example, LA County Sheriff's:
LASD deputies provided law enforcement services to over three million residents in an area of 3,171 square miles (8,210 km2) of the 4,083 square miles on the county, both in the unincorporated county land and within the 42 contract cities.
Whereas LAPD is supervised by a Police Commission:
The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, also known as the Police Commission, is a five-member body that oversees the LAPD. The board is responsible for setting policies for the department and overseeing the LAPD's overall management and operations. The Chief of Police reports to the board, but the rest of the department reports to the chief.
Los Angeles Police Commission:
The board is made up of five members who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Each member serves a five-year term with a maximum of two terms.

346 Quotes from Wiki.

If you have a link that says the LA County Sheriff can override the decisions of the LAPD, I would like to check it out. But, the Sheriff doesn't have that power.

348 The goal of the exercise is always, unless I miss the mark, to put the King in check, so that you can assume all the moves and enter a cause and response kinda' thing. Am I right ?

If I am - first move is to move that pawn to F4 ? If I read this shit correct ?
Posted by: Arrow Straight at July 17, 2021 05:08 PM (PeJCI)

Well, YOUR king pawn to K4. Moving the other color is rude.

There are other moves you could do, but all but a few are really dumb.

353 Pepe. If your gf is thinking of making babies with you, and you think that she would be a good mother of children, then promote her from gf to wife.

If yall want babies, IVF may or may not be the correct pathway. It is expensive. And no guarantees.

That's the plan. I'm asking her parents permission next week.
