As is true for many things like this, the only way to stop it is to penalize the people profiting from it.
Arrest politicians for giving money to selected demographic groups as straight up vote selling. Investigate and arrest bureaucrats profiting from the businesses they regulate. Tax the dependent class on their government hand outs. And give the tech oligarchs the same treatment the NY government is giving the Trump org - oh, you have a company [whatever] Mr Bezos? So bonds are dangerous in the long term - though the politicians will pay them as long as they can. Land is a good investment, as are long term durable goods. We sold our Denver home in January. Took the proceeds and bought a bigger, but much less expensive, home in South Dakota. Our mortgage is now less than a new car payment. We paid off our cars and medical debt from when our son was born, and our monthly expenses are now a fraction of what they were in Colorado. Now our only outstanding debt is a 5-figure mortgage. We already own plenty of guns and ammo, and have been stacking gold and silver for years, so no need to invest more there. We're just planning for the inevitable, and keeping monthly outlays down to a minimum in the process. Posted by: Ken Kanniff at July 13, 2021 12:18 PM (pstK1) 31

What Joe Mannix just said. "Third World country" is now a very rational, well-founded epithet to hurl at the US, for the most part. Not just the idiotic financial recklessness.
Last thread was about an election with massive integrity questions - well, it was indirectly about that, I guess. But every ratchet turn downward, from finance to insane racism becoming mainstreamed to the national yawn about the equivalent of an attempted coup to the stunning ignorant submission to completely baseless radical "pandemic" measures to apparent indifference to mass violent lawlessness, points to a reality of "Third World country" - the populace. Or enough of it. Posted by: rhomboid (OTzUX) at July 13, 2021 12:18 PM (OTzUX) 35

Silver is one of the most manipulated metals on the planet. The smart money purposely shorts precious metals because they know it's traditionally regarded as inflation hedges. They know if it skyrockets they are proper fucked in the paper money driven market.
In addition, during times of hyperinflation precious metals, specifically gold LOSES value. I think it was Romania where we saw this in action. The long and short of it there is don't rely on gold to save your ass in times of hyperinflation. Posted by: The Maskless Ranger at July 13, 2021 12:26 PM (ul1Jv) 96

My theory is that stocks are the best place to put money. This assumes that markets continue to exist and our portfolios aren't seized. If they are going down the seizure route, they can easily seize bank accounts too.
Gold isn't that great of a hedge because you can't eat it. Real Estate is good if you can afford it. But stocks are tied to company value, and the Intellectual Property and capital assets will grown in value with inflation. Posted by: Dave in Fla (5p7BC) at July 13, 2021 12:26 PM (5p7BC) 100

Joe, that's exactly correct. And it will be (if it happens) literally overnight. Think of it like a game of musical chairs. When the music's over, turn out the light.
Certain commodities, rare earths, and finished goods - even wheel bearings - simply aren't made within our borders anymore. We're seeing huge cracks develop in supply chains. Finished cars and trucks, selling for close to $100k dollars - sitting in parking lots, useless and unsaleable for want of a certain SM chip or proprietary gee-gaw. But it's worse than that. Ordinarily there is a "hard" currency to fall back on. When say, Argentina or Venezuela goes tits up economically, they fall back on dollar payments. No imports without cash on the barrel head. No "90 days net"; as we saw in the 2008 debacle, credit is the linchpin that keeps everything moving. If the dollar shits the bed, so to speak, then what? Imagine though - for just one example albeit important - NO COFFEE. We don't grow it in the United States. Sure, Hawaii. But be realistic. Does $500 a pound sound "fair"? There are also incoming ETFs so you can invest in crypto with your normal portfolio, which alone is going to be rocket fuel. My concern is SEC is dicking around on this, but I suspect its because they are in league with smart money to surpress the price until theyve accumulated enough, which means the price is discounted right now. Bitcoin is a mirage. There was a lot of Chinese money involved early on both in terms of mining and direct investment. Easiest way for some of their people to offshore money in a moderately untraceable way. Now that China has more or less outlawed "unapproved" mining, I suspect Bitcoin's price will stagnate until some major external event moves the needle. Otherwise, there's gonna be a huge number of pump-and-dump alternative crypto currencies in the next few years, and they're gonna spoil the entire bunch of crypto for all but the most savvy investors. Suddenly - very suddenly, like probably within a fiscal quarter - imports are going to get a lot more expensive and we won't have an industrial base to fall back on. Nothing I've seen to this point tells me my crazy tin-foil hat was misshapen. It seems to me the worst thing to be during hyperinflation is to be cash flush. Metals track inflation, but in a true crash probably aren't as useful as they could be. Seems like durable, tradable goods would be the best place to have your relative wealth stored. Even better if they can be traded incrementally. A chicken is a fine investment, $5 on the front end and it produces 15 cents a day during peak season and may be cashed in for $5 at its completion. Good luck with bitcoin when the electricity goes down
Posted by: buzzsaw90 at July 13, 2021 12:35 PM (YboWf) I was lucky enough to be part of what may have been a dry run several years back, when somebody took out a fiber optic line in the South Bay. Nothing, and I mean nothing worked. All we had was electricity. And that's an easy fix - and could have been taken care of at the same substation. While the little shack now looks like a fucking high security prison compound, I don't think they took away a single lesson other than making it harder to access. There. If the lack of cell phones, land lines and functioning businesses had gone on much longer than 24 hours, people would have lost it. Some already did. We depend entirely too much on something that didn't exist 25 years ago. I can't believe a business grinds to a halt, because their computers don't work. Anything on an epic scale, like an EMP and all hell would break loose. Bitcoin is far too dependent on the flimsiest of foundations. Resist the temptation to hold a ton of cash. The stock market looks historically overvalued, and there are certainly analogs to the 2000 bubble. But cash disintegrates in a high inflation environment, so holding cash to wait for the market crash is a risky proposition. If you were thinking of buying a new car, take advantage of low/no-interest loans with as long a payoff duration as you can. 3-4 years from now those dollars are going to be worth a fair amount less than today.

206 Resist the temptation to hold a ton of cash.

The problem with bitcoin is valuation. It's only worth what people will pay for it. The swings can be wild and hard to predict. While some of the digital currencies react to market events, it is still nascent in terms of its risk triggers. That makes it less then ideal for the average investor. Biden and his cronies truly do want to wreck the country. I don't know how we actually prepare for this.
====== Not that I disagree with this statement at all, but I've been thinking a lot about this lately. What's in it for them? Sure, to lord over teeming masses of people looking for a savior, but if our assets become worthless, so do theirs. If the country becomes absolute shit, it becomes shit for all of us. No institute of higher learning in America may charge more then $20k/year for an education. Yeah, completely unconstitutional, but we are beyond that now. Let the courts fight it for a while, because once everyone is forced down to $20k/year, which note would be trivial to do (every diversity officer fired) it would be very, very hard to go back to claiming they need to charge $50k+/year. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at July 13, 2021 12:45 PM (7Ttpp) What I loved most about Hogg's "Good Pillow" is these idiots were tying themselves in knots about how to handle the charity end of it (who and what), diversity (but unionized!) hires, everything but how to actually put together a decent product, from design to materials to manufacture. Like pillows come straight out of the ether. Not much different than deciding which Ferrari to buy and what color in anticipation of winning the lotto. I doubt one single person suggested he actually figure out a pillow, start making them with a handful of people, and build a business first. Nope, we'll start at the top, and worry about a unionized factory cranking out millions of pillows so we can give money to poor black people and confiscate guns. One of my favorite books about surviving crisis economic times is Barton Biggs, "War, Wealth, & Wisdom." Released at the height of the Great Financial Meltdown (2009), the book recommends having land that can be productively farmed, reachable within a day's journey from primary residence, but not too close to major urban area. Biggs' conclusions came from close study of financial markets during wartime and what resources held value. Many Jews held jewels, precious metals, and fine art work, but that did not work. You can't get change for a gold bar. Food, clothes, and shelter had highest value. Most of book is fascinating (to me) examination of how national stock exchanges seemed to predict military success and failure.

"What steps would you suggest to someone to Crash-Proof their lives (to the extent that's even possible)?"
Own some land. Practice planting and raising potatoes, corn, and whatever leafy vegetables grow well in your area. Learn to squish potato bugs by hand. Learn which weeds are edible - garlic mustard, lamb's quarter, purslane, and pokeweed grow faster than you can eat them and are good for you. Talk to the neighbors. Spend less time refreshing comment threads and more time doing real world stuff. Posted by: rold at July 13, 2021 08:42 PM (JZg1U) 372
I should mention that pokeweed is in fact poisonous until you boil the leaves and throw away the rinsewater and then boil them again. But once you do that, it's fine. Don't bother with the roots or berries, that's not un-poison-able.
