The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports. I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today. Gwen Berry

Quote II

“He’s a sellout, he’s a fake Republican and a disgrace to your state. He’s not the candidate you want representing the Republican Party.” President Donald J. Trump

Quote III

“I couldn’t take it, then I was advised to skip it because it wasn’t needed, and it wasn’t necessary to spend the time studying. It’s not built for people of color or low-income students, so why even try?”Evelyn Minjares-Carrillo

Quote IV

‘To the people who were commenting that I was being overdramatic, you just have to remember that for some people it takes so much courage to get up and go to the gym,’TikTok user Shelby(@shelby.bellz)

We may be pulling out of Afghanistan. But the Paste Eater in Chief is out to kick someone's ass in Iraq.

The U.S. military has conducted defensive precision airstrikes against three facilities near the Iraq-Syria border region Sunday evening.

According to Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby, the facilities are used by several Iran-backed militia groups engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq, including Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS).

"As demonstrated by this evening's strikes, President Biden has been clear that he will act to protect U.S. personnel. Given the ongoing series of attacks by Iran-backed groups targeting U.S. interests in Iraq, the President directed further military action to disrupt and deter such attacks," Kirby added. "The United States took necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action designed to limit the risk of escalation - but also to send a clear and unambiguous deterrent message."

If you follow the math. Terminally sick children under the age of 12 need not apply to the Make A Wish Foundation?

Make-a-Wish Foundation has announced that they will only grant wishes to children and participating family members who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The announcement was made by Make-a-Wish CEO Richard Davis in a video:

And here I thought they were a decent non-profit organization.

Neither wind nor solar are ready for prime-time, and due to their need for backup power, they may never be ready.

I keep reading how wind and solar are finally cheaper than fossil fuels … and every time I’ve read it, my urban legend detector rings like crazy.

It rings in part because the market is very efficient at replacing energy sources based on their cost. Here, for example, is the story of kerosene, emphasis mine:

They say that dispatchable technologies have “more value to a system” … but they fail to mention that “more value” translates into higher real-world costs for non-dispatchable renewable technologies.

How much higher? Well … they don’t say. But you can be sure that it won’t be free. At a bare minimum, it will be the capital cost of the dispatchable backup generator plus some portion of the other fixed, variable, and transmission costs … and that means that because of the costs of the needed backup generators, there is very little chance that solar and wind will ever be competitive with other methods.

Scientists Have Found a Sneaky Way of Getting Kids to Eat More Vegetables And the answer is not putting chocolate syrup on them.

Researchers have come up with a new way of getting kids to follow a healthy diet: putting more vegetables on their plate.

Larger portions of veggies resulted in kids chomping down 68 percent more of them on average (an extra 21 grams, or 0.74 ounces per day), in a 4-week experiment involving 67 children aged from 3 to 5.

Once again the Federal Bureau of Incompetence comes shining through.

Joseph Bolanos says he didn’t riot at the Capitol. He wasn’t even on the streets at the time, having retreated to a hotel room as the incursion had happened. He said he turned over evidence to the FBI that proves this

But the FBI still raided his and his mother’s apartments. He’s had two strokes since. He’s said he’s been ostracized by his community, where he was a respected member. All because an anonymous caller reportedly told the FBI he was bragging about having entered the Capitol — which he has the evidence to prove he didn’t do.

According to a Wednesday piece by New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, Bolanos is the president of his Upper West Side block association, a position he’s held for almost a quarter-century.

The old "Good news. Bad news." conundrum .

TAMPA (WFLA) – The Florida Highway Patrol announced Friday that the man who was captured in Mexico earlier this week and believed to be a Polk County man who had been on the run for 14 years is actually a completely different fugitive.

The FHP announced the arrest of a man who they believed was Brian Dale Andrews on Wednesday. According to troopers, the man was arrested and returned to the United States after he had identified himself to Mexican authorities as Andrews, who has been wanted in Polk County for 14 years in connection with a deadly DUI crash.

19 Our planet was very different 100,000 years ago, and if we could survey that time, we would be astounded by the human diversity across its surface. To enumerate what little we know with certainty, there were at a minimum: modern humans, Neanderthals, at least three to four varieties of Denisovans, and two pygmy Homo populations in Southeast Asia. Likely there were still remnant Homo erectus in Southeast Asia as well, and other diverged lineages within Africa, and a new Homo in Nesher Ramla, Israel, in the Middle East with affinities to Neanderthals.

IOW: Downtown Houston.

Here's a video on the aftermath of Tim Burton pulling out of production (can't blame him, he then made the awesome "Ed Wood", one of my favorites) and how it affected Chris Elliott and Reznick.

Ten minutes and $20, you can build your own A/C from Home Depot and a youtube video and a bag of ice.

I was reading an interesting piece at WUWT yesterday about how the media goes on and on over excess heat deaths due to "global warming". The guy goes on to say that even if you accept that premise (100k excess heat deaths), what they ALWAYS fail to note is that cold deaths are 5-7 times HIGHER than heat deaths. And that warmer temps leads to LESS MORTALITY overall in a warming world. Like 200k less. Oops. Oopsie.

61 A puzzler for the ONT Horde:

Twice in the last week, I have experienced an 8-10 second delay (4-5s each way) during an evening cell-to-land-line phone conversation.

But the problem did NOT appear during an afternoon call to the same number. Others have reported similarly mixed results.

Any idea what might be causing the lag?

Here's a video on the aftermath of Tim Burton pulling out of production (can't blame him, he then made the awesome "Ed Wood", one of my favorites) and how it affected Chris Elliott and Reznick.

Dealer at model show offered to trade two Tamiya He 219 kits for the Hi-Tech Hasegawa OA-4M Skyhawk I was trying to offload. One kit was listed as missing parts and other was listed as complete.

The one with missing parts is lacking one whole sprue which means an entire engine nacelle, wheel, landing gear, and two FuG 220 radar dipoles are MIA.

Here's the kicker, the 'complete kit is missing a propeller. Luckily I can still build one complete kit since the other one still has both propellers.

151 Researchers have come up with a new way of getting kids to follow a healthy diet: putting more vegetables on their plate.
Larger portions of veggies resulted in kids chomping down 68 percent more of them on average (an extra 21 grams, or 0.74 ounces per day), in a 4-week experiment involving 67 children aged from 3 to 5.

I love most vegetables. Especially in-season ones. That Snohomish corn should be about a month away or so. The eastern WA fruits are rolling in, the sweet cherries are on sale at all the local stores. That Bing cherry could actually be one of about 7 varieties.

There are some things this state does right, and sweet cherries are one of them.

157 I like the lawn to look good, but, I don't want to make a career out of it or spend huge sums onnit either. It's a lot easier to maintain a thick, healthy turf than it is to re-establish a nice lawn. Healthy grass doesn't sprout a gazillion weeds.

Yeah, the article kind of has it correct. Heat stress or shock is a thing. Cutting the (bluegrass) too low really nukes it. It exposes the roots to sunlight, and it dries out too quick.

Anybody that says it's "cooler" from 4 to 6 PM is smoking their socks, though. Cut it in the early morning, even with dew on it, and it has more time to recover. Once it gets hot out, it stays hot, and that's not a "good" time. If the lawn goes dormant, don't cut it (if you don't have to) and don't water it. Not unless you plan on keepin' on' keepin' on irrigation.

I like lawn dormancy. That means I don't have to mow the damn thing as often. Once fall arrives, it will green up again as cooler temps arrive, and more rain. Keep the blade sharp, set it on the highest setting in the summer, let it grow long, and it will bounce back in the fall real quick. Cutting the grass too short is the biggest error most people make.

The Betty Broderick movie is entertaining. It's a true story. She did a lot of nutso stuff before she blew him and his new wife away, including driving her car into the front of his house. She also left filthy messages on the phone that her young son would hear.

He was a cliche sneaky lawyer, who cheated on her and screwed her in the divorce settlement, and she was just nuts, probably a narcissist. NOT a good mix.

as long as you are NOT dependent on them for a civilized existence.

They do have their place, but not as dispatchable commercial grade power. If you have to keep a cistern full of well water, wind may work. If you are heating water on the roof of your Mexican villa and gas/electric utilities are expensive, then solar heating is a way to go.

In commercial applications, windmills might be great for powering desalination plants or pumping water to higher elevation to a hydrodam reservoir.

And you can run a civilization on occasional power, for as long as the climate supports it and no one expects to engage in any form of industry that requires large amounts of reliable power.

I don't water my lawn so it goes dormant during the summer but comes roaring back in the Fall. So no cutting from mid June to late October where I'll get a couple cuts in before the rains make it impossible, unless you're a Mexican lawn crew that cuts the grass during a monsoon.

336 Here in Southern AZ, solar on your house works pretty well. It's usually sunny. The idea is you lease the panels for 20 years at a fixed monthly rate. They generate very close to the amount of power you use and send it off to the electric company. You just pay the fees and taxes, along with the monthly panel lease. The panel company is responsible for repair and upkeep. The electric company usually raises rates every year, so it's basically locking in the rate for 20 years. Every year you save more than the last year compared to just paying for electricity. This may not be the same deal everywhere, I expect they do it here to avoid having to build more and more and more generating capacity...and it's not going to work as well in areas where it is cloudy more often.

I don't play Simon Says with pronouns. If someone is f'd in the head they don't know what or who they are at literally any moment of the day, as a matter of personal security and better sense it is best to avoid them.

Avoidance solves 99% of many difficult problems. Violence covers the remaining 1%.

491 That sidebar article re "firebrands needed" - you can always tell the real ones: they don't label themselves as such. Out here in AZ we have a state senator - Wendy Rogers - (btw, did you know she was in the military???) - frantically sending out fundraising emails advertising herself as a "pro-Trump firebrand." Cringe. Her claimed achievement is proposing legislation where "if you mess with a ballot you go to prison." Notice she's not talking about going after who stole THIS election (the democrats), no. Its always, "look at me over here closing the barn door!! Sure, every last animal is slaughtered by wild animals but by-gosh, I'm your girl (did you know I served in the military???) to get those low level chumps who get caught carrying boxes of ballots!"
The worst is calling herself a "firebrand." No thanks - let the voters label you as such after your actions, not talk. Also, lose the military uniform photos. Sorry but RINO Martha McCain-McSally (did you know she was a pilot in the military?) the flip flop opportunist who we just tossed out killed that faux-patriot routine along with your mentors McCain, Flake et al. Not getting a penny.

493 Muldoon, I lied. Tony plays it "slow" starting at 6:07 in the link on YT. He plays it up to speed at the beginning of the tune.

It's a weird tuning, "one of them off brand tunins" DAAEAE with a capo on the first. That makes it in F, but tuned a semitone sharp. I guess puts it right in tune with bagpipes.

Yay! Ha ha. Tony has hands like a butcher, fingers like sausages. So much for the notion of "guitar hands" he can really play that thing. He does a lot of tunes in DADGAD tuning. Perfect if you want to be depressed in strange keys.

Better on the beach.

We used to get really drunk in college and build a big bonfire and play music and dance and then strip down and swim in the ocean.

Once I came home with underwear that did not belong to me.

No hanky panky. But sometimes clothes get mixed up when a lot of people are drunk and skinny dipping.

Grampa grew up in Tenino and talked about swimming in the Scatter Creek, and sometimes a kid would get his clothes "rawhided", that is tied in knots and soaked in the creek to make the unfortunate kid undo the knots with his teeth.

That is a VERY inefficient way to run A/C. Unless he's got diesel or other fuel, a shit ton of it, and for very cheap, it's much cheaper to run off the grid.

I'm looking at generators, now, PTO driven ones. Run it off a tractor. You get more generator KVA for your buck, as you already have the prime mover. Of course, prime movers in the form of the tractors will suck dieself fuel.

Easily get one to run the whole house with spare capacity to boot for around $6K or so. Nice 12 lead 3-phase units (with these, you can wire them up in a variety of configs, both three and single phase output that will run anything. 120/240V 3-wire single phase, 208Y 4-wire 240 2 and 4 wire deltas, even 480Y outputs).

I will likely get one (maybe two).

From what I've been reading and gathering, and this stuff is far my own area of knowledge, it looks the cause of the condo collapse is going to be failed waterproofing around the pool deck. There was an engineering inspection in 2018 that found significant concrete problems, spalling, cracking, and corroding rebar in the structural members in the parking garage.

Failed and improperly installed waterproofing of the pool and parking garage top deck where blamed. Something was laid flat when it should've been sloped in the original construction. It failed, and water was seeping in and attacking the foundation concrete.

That 2018 report said something needed to be done right away before there was compromise of structural integrity. Nothing was done. It was going to be expensive. The owners would've have to eat 6 figure special assessments to cover the costs of repair.

There are going to be criminal charges involved here, and a huge amount of lawsuits. This is going to be a humdinger.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 28, 2021 02:11 AM (Mzdiz)

654
When is say owners eat 6 figure, I mean each condo owner would be on the hook for a 6 figure share of the total repair bill. The total would've been millions and millions to fix it.

This is why I'll never buy a part share like a condo in some larger structure.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 28, 2021 02:14 AM (Mzdiz)

655

Also, amongst the missing and most certainly dead in that condo collapse are a few family members of various Latin American bigshots. Family of former el-presidentes and very rich and well connected families. They are not going to let this lie, and have big money to throw at making people pay for any liability.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 28, 2021 02:16 AM (Mzdiz)

656 it would be very surprising if anything happened to anybody for the condo in miami thingy

the guy that built it is gone.

the statue of limitatins is expired.

every engineering reprt for a building says that the repairs are structural and need to be made immediately.

six figures for each unit is 13.5mm

the board is elcted.

if the residents decide not to do repairs, that is democracy.

I've been reading lawyers talking about this. All that immunity and statute of limitations stuff will be pierced by gross misconduct. The condo board members can be held personally liable for such misconduct, they say.

There are going to be more vendetta lawsuits over this that you can imagine.

Yeah, every report says this is serious, but only a few result in collapsed building with likely over 100 dead.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at June 28, 2021 02:28 AM (Mzdiz)

658 "be failed waterproofing around the pool deck"

That's interesting because a few days ago someone posted that a resident alerted management about cracks that had formed around the pool area.

if the residents were aware of the need for repairs and did not authorize the board to do the repairs that is a thing.

This collapse, depending on the final death toll, may be the biggest (no- attack, intentional) building collapse incident in US History.

The closest one to date is the 1981 Hayatt Regnency walkway collapse in Kansas City which killed 114 people.

There were several criminal charges filed there, but no convictions. In other, lesser such incidences, there have been plea deals and jail time, even suicides amongst engineers.

Read about that Hyatt Regency collapse in '81. Heads rolled, and still are rolling over that.

This Miami thing is going to eclipse that, I guarantee you.

691 If I remember correctly, the Hyatt Regency walkway was designed properly but the contractor submitted shop drawings of the support linkages that were not properly reviewed. The shop drawings were not adequate for the load. They may not have even been signed off on.

Normal safety margins were enough to keep the thing up until there was a big dance party where everyone was bopping around to a Tommy Dorsey tune. The live load then exceeded the reduced safety margin and boom.
