I doubt I've taken more than a half dozen in my life, but everybody else in the world seems to be obsessed with them these days. Still, a certain....awareness of one's surroundings would seem to be prudent. Here's a bunch of people who weren't.
Carjacking I still belong to the NextDoor group for my old community in Baltimore, mainly because I can't be arsed to quit the group. Lately there have been a bunch of posts about a group of carjackers working the neighborhood. I rarely speak up in this forum, but I did opine that it was quite horrible that violence from the city was making its way out into the suburbs (Baltimore had the novel idea of legalizing crime last year. Like a lot of cities they stopped responding to a whole range of crimes), and that maybe the residents of the county had the right to expect their government to actually do its job with their tax money. Hilariously, one person responded that “The last time the police responded to a carjacking, they shot and killed the (poor*) carjacker!” I felt that my honest reaction - “Good!” - would not be taken in the proper spirit, so I didn't reply.

Look at states like Virginia, Colorado and NC. They were all formerly red, and most transients have only made them more blue. What about New Mexico and Arizona? I hope Texas is a special case. We need some wins. AFAIK, TN, FL,and WV have moved right when most states have moved left. But in WV's case, I doubt it has much to do with newbies moving in.

I don't think states that purple up have the same dynamic as states that red-shift from an influx of outsiders. Colorado's problem was that explosive growth in Denver, Boulder, etc tended especially to draw young urban professionals who then clustered together and brought all their college-instilled psychoses with them. Same goes for NC with Charlotte and the Research Triangle. And then of course there's VA with the DC metro crapfest.
TX and FL have some of that too, of course, but lately the influx is driven by people who are expressing a conscious desire to live in a freer and more congenial atmosphere: not the same thing at all. We really have to look at who's moving to these places and why, then, before making any general statements about these migration patterns.

A lot of people enjoy a hand held breakfast confection such as a doughnut, bear claw or perhaps even a muffin. I think those are delightful as well.
But, at the risk of sounding pretentious, I prefer the more proper fork and plate format. I feel like the blueberry crumb cake is more diverse, and could be enjoyed with company in the evening after dinner with a cup of coffee, or in the morning as a breakfast item.

Despite being Hispanic-majority, there was a massive shift in Trump's direction from 2016 to 2020, and now cities like McAllen are electing Republicans on the local level. We'll have to see what happens in 2024, of course, but any writing-off of Texas is not yet justified.

I've had unspectacular results with a similar exercise, with (leftover) red wine (for cooking), or pesto. May be my technique.
I did freeze all the lemon juice I squeezed from the meyers when I peeled lemons for this year's limoncello, and have used it to make (amazing) lemonade. So that worked.

agreed. The McCallen thing was a big deal. The area has always been Hispanic, that is the reality. If you look at past voting patterns, most of the Rio Grande Valley and many other parts of South and West Texas have turned blue. It looks like that is changing somewhat. And it could never make more sense. These people are suffering because of the crazy border, and they have suffered for decades.
If makes sense they say enough is enough. The Texas cities like SA, Houston, and Dallas bother me to no end. S.A. in particular is scary considering the politicians they produce these days. But I am hopeful South Texas says enough is enough.

I didn't get into the Coleco thing, it didn't make much sense to me. i did have a weird football game where you put little records into a recorder and they told you what happened on the play. Later, we had those hand held electronic football games, those were a blast for a few years. Paper football was more fun because you had to interact with people.

Same thing applied to most of the combatant countries in WWII, except for the US, of course (maybe Canada?), but the Soviets were the ones creating an enormous mechanized force. They actually had a build-up prior to the war (very incomplete), and qualified drivers, for armor and even trucks, was one of many shortfalls they had.

My father told me that a lot of the other recruits he served with hoped the Army would teach them to drive, so there were always plenty of volunteers for motor pool stuff.
My maternal uncles didn't have that problem, as my grandfather had started with a junkyard, taught himself to fix cars with his sons learning alongside him, and had a Nash dealership by the time of the war.

You could start a Beetle with a socket wrench. 3/8" drive ratchet, 13/16" spark plug socket. Apply socket to generator pulley nut, pull through slowly until you feel a cylinder building up compression. The drop the ratchet handle down to about the seven o'clock position, and give it a quick upwards tug. If the engine is in a reasonable state of tune, and not super cold, it will start. I got to be good at it. Fun stunt to show off, too.

Agreed sir. I never understood shredded wheat or chex. And don't get me started on Chex mix. We never got sweet cereals, it was just not going to happen. But Cheerios and particularly Raisn Bran owned shredded wheat.
We did have oatmeal a lot in the cold months. Like the Shredded wheat guy said, you cold doctor it up. I used to throw in Nestle morsels and Reddi Whip.

I don't know, I have never had it. I have had Foie Gras many times. I have had the preserved type and even the fresh type. The key thing with Foie Gras is the liver is so fatty, it is more like butter, and only tastes slightly like liver. But there is a small amount of liver stench. If you are trying to be fancy or wordly, you can get past it. I have had it many times over the years. But i never pine for it, I doubt I will have it again unless someone offers it.

I ate all manner of cereal as a kid. Along with the ones you mentioned, there was also Quisp and King Vitaman. I also liked the single serving boxes, probably because my dad had a boat for a while, and whenever we'd go out to where it was docked (I don't have too many memories of taking the boat out on the river), those mini cereal boxes were always on the menu.

No shit man, same here. Dad also had a boat, and my grandmother had a shore house, so the single servs were a constant. I never ate them out of the box like they said though, I always used a bowl. Funny story, during my recent move I actually found my official capt crunch plastic cereal bowls. They were square, one red, one blue. lol

My fiancee makes it, and puts in anchovy powder with the bean paste, it stays a paste.
Another trick is dried cayenne or Thai chilies in sesame oil. It hurts so wonderfully

pretty easy to learn as the hard part was the 70s and 80s little cars
that had 80 hp and no torque. Much harder to learn how much gas to give
to drop the clutch without stalling. Last stick I had was a 06 GTI..had
so much torque it would practically idle from a stop in first.

yeah newer cars are easy. I have a newer mazda 6 with the 6 speed manual. I was on a hill at a light with it when I first got it, and I pushed in the clutch and it didn't roll back. At first I thought the brakes were frozen, then I found out its a feature. It gives you time to release the clutch without rolling back.

sounds good. I read once in a book about Tex Mex cuisine that most people can't get the cheese the restaurants use. They are not joking around. The restaurants have a purveyor that makes the queso dip everyone loves. They won't sell it at retail as it will cannibalize restaurant sales.

Korean Fried Chicken is worth checking out. I don't doubt the sauces add a lot to it, but that is only part of it. They cook the wings twice, and if they are serious about it, it takes at least 30-40 minutes to fill an order. The crunch level on those wings is very far beyond a normal wing.

One of the local Korean places has a Mexican husband and wife running the front part of the restaurant, and they speak Korean to the owners. I asked once what was harder to learn, English or Korean, and he didn't really have an answer
On a side note, I had to spend a while once talking to a Korean lady who spoke Spanish and English as well as her native Korean. Her English was pretty heavily accented, but her Spanish was Argentinian because she spent a lot of time there as a kid. That made my brains squeak - bulgogi on the parilla!

You can add chiles or cumin if you like.

My condolences, those anniversaries come to mind at times. My Dad always comes down to visit the cemetery, my Mom died the Ides of March 2014.
This year he was coming down, on cruise control, hit some back ice and rolled and totaled his van. He had some cuts and scrapes but the 84 yo dude went home that afternoon when his grandson picked him up from the hospital.
BTW, he turns 85 tomorrrow. We can't be there but please keep Roger in your thought and prayers.

ham hocks and stock/broth are killer for beans. Sure you have to watch your sodium levels but those two things give them the real flavor. Spices are great but you cant replicate broth and ham hocks

I'm more old fashioned. I put two chicken carcasses in a 20 qt. pot, and simmer them down for six hours, let cool, strain the liquid and then debone the meat-pile by hand. Laborious, but glorious, the results. It's from that stock that I build up the Chicken Soup, and I'll let you ask Ben Had about that.
But I'm going to put your version of stock to work on a couple pounds of dried pinto beans, and see what results when I cook 'em down with the traditional ham-hock. I can make camp beans (whole), or refried beans from 'em, and love 'em both.
I'm intrigued, and am looking forward to dining on the experiments!

Bonchon is well known but it is a a major chain these days. My guess is some places are great and others are well, franchisees. I have had some local places in Korea towns and preferred them. But the Korean fried chicken wings stand out as they act like each wing is a piece of art. They fry them once, let them cool down and fry them again. Then they apply the sauces by hand. No doubt the KFC is very different than what we think of as a standard wing.

They're like star ships compared to the old cars. My old car is a 1969 roadrunner, and even though a did a lot of tweaks to the suspension and added disk brakes its a fucking sled compared to the newer cars. My mazda has a short throw shifter that I basically just use my fingers to shift. The roadrunner has a hurst competition plus shifter in it and the throw is retarded long compared to modern cars. Step on the brakes in a modern car and they'll flatten your eyeballs, yet the roadrunner with disks up front and 11" drums in the back still has you judging your stopping distance. Forget going fast on curvy roads, you'll just end up on the roof. lol

I currently drive a 430i. I will say that it feels like the snail (I called my Scirocco the snail because when I went by people would say "Man! Look at that S-car go!". Yes, I made dad jokes at 16). Crisp acceleration, goes around corners like it's on rails, twin turbos keep the acceleration going well into triple digits, fun as hell to drive. But it's a loooooong way above the snail. I'd blow the 'rock so far off the line that it wouldn't even be funny.

I haven't talked to my mother in well over a year. My brother says she always gets off the phone fast since she has nothing to say. Used to be you could reckon with at least an hour. I'm ambivalent about this. I refuse to call just because I should. She was a real asshole for a long time. On the other end of the spectrum LOL if anyone is looking for a good commuter car, the Toyota Echo we had was outstanding. Simple features, low maintenance. The clutch lasted 10+ years, which boggled my mine because I'm really heavy footed on the clutch.

My first BMW was a '78 320i. Four speed, the following year saw the five stick. Wind up windows, no cruise, a very basic car. A very basic, handled like a slot-car, car.
Till I saw bits of connecting rod and shattered crankcase and a cloud of oil smoke in my rearview mirror on Texas Highway 281 in San Antonio. When they fail, they FAIL. (oil pump shit the bed, and simultaneous with the oil temp light, the engine blew)
Graduated to a M-B 300d and later, a successive trio of BMW 735i and iL's, after.

Indeed! He love the Os and turned me into a baseball lover - which I passed along to my son. The company my dad worked for had season tix back in the 70s and 80s. They often came home with him cuz nobody was using them so he and I would go. Dozens of games each year. Saw many legends and HOFers for many teams at old Memorial Stadium. Dad was a Colts season ticket holder up until they snuck out to Indy. He was at the 1958 and 1959 championship games. Yeah - he was old Baltimore through and through!

I bought my daughter a Saturn, and it was a really nice looking car with the plastic body panels, and then after about 6 months the entire footprint where she parked in the driveway was rust-stained like it was dying on the inside.
I made a big deal about her checking the oil, because it would burn oil. I'm figuring, your one job is to check the oil on your own car and put oil in it if it needs it. So, about a few months later the engine died. She was putting oil in the radiator.

I'm a YUUUUUGE fan of Rush. I do my best to stay ignorant of any of their political or religious views. I do know that Peart was a fan of Ayn Rand - but he also became spiritually bitter after losing his daughter and wife. He wrote lyrics for a few songs accordingly.
Politics has ruined so much of entertainment that I enjoy. I won't let it ruin Rush. But YMMV.

I think part of it was buskers need to have their fun. I don't recall hearing Natty Boh. But they would say NASHEinal Bohemian with an extreme accent on the National part.
I loved Ripken as every one did. But the Oriole I liked the most was Eddie Murray. Earl Weaver was so strident, he might have been too opinionated for the Horde.

Rush, along with ZZ Top, were two of the hugest, bestest three member bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s and '00s, period. Problem was, one could enjoy ZZ Top's every musical expression. Conversely, one could enjoy every bit of Rush, until that bastard opened his yip, and yelped.
Rush was a high I.Q. lyrical band. Ruined, because half or more of who heard them, couldn't stand the voice, and bailed. Pity. 'cause MUSICALY, they kicked some huge and major ass.

I'm not a Cal Ripken fan at all. Guy was a pretentious d-bag. Still is. His nice guy persona was fake. I had a personal interaction with him when I was 12 at the HOF in Cooperstown - at Brooks Robinson's induction. Cal treated me like an annoying little peasant. I know a lot of folks who have similar stories over the years. Respect him as a ballplayer. But he benefitted by hitting in front of Eddie (my all time favorite Oriole) for 6 years. Cal wasn't a clutch hitter -- and he ALWAYS seemed to hit it an inning ending double play.

One of Mrs Doof 's aunts has become very good friends with Brooks. She was a yuuuuuuge Brooks fan growing up. She is still a die hard Os fan. We wrote to Brooks a few years ago to try to get him to come to her 60th birthday party. He couldn't make it but actually wrote to her and they struck up a friendship. They don't make them like that anymore, and Baltimore was blessed with more than a few. My sister is an occupational therapist. She worked with Johnny Unitas, helping design a glove he could wear to compensate for his injuries so he could play golf in his old age. She cried when he died, not because she's a sports fan (she's not), but because he was such a nice man.
I wish I could go down to Govans and eat a meal at The Golden Arm. Not because was that great, but....

Skip, mask wearing around here is way down since the vaccinated are allowed to wander free in IL, I guess the unvacced are supposed to continue.
Well I'm not, nor will get the vaccine. Had major back surgery and when they have split me open, maybe 10" and I've had a 3 level spinal fusion...I'm not inclined to to take an experimental vaccine.
Someone shows me a study on how this vaccine interacts w/ my type of surgery and I'll look at it.
I'm ranting because Jules just asked me to get vacced because we will have to fly for her mother's services in AZ. I'm not doing it.
