Normally, starts, runs, stops. A little rest and starts, runs, stops. indicates fuel is restricted getting to the carb. While it sits, the fuel slowly fills the carb bowl. You start it, it burns the fuel in the bowl but the fuel is restricted so you "run out of gas". Bottom line, as stated above, clogged fuel filter or screen.

Weird Dave. If that mower has the fuel in the tank that you bought it with, drain it out into a suitable fuel-can, and replace it with Ethanol Free fuel. Even if you've gotta drive sixty some miles to your closest Buc-ee's to find some.
Clear every bit of the fuel system leading to the carb, clean out any varnished deposits, and refill with the fuel sans ethanol. Some starting fluid into the intake, and if successful, you're on your way. If it still stalls out, the problem is likely varnish in the carb itself. Worth payin' a pro to fix that one, I think. If you don't do it all the time, the pro mechanic will save you headache, if not actual cash vs. repeated mistakes and buying wrongpartz. I'm kinda a lazy bastard so when I have carb issues on small 4 cycles I like to have them fix themselves. Try mixing some additives in the gas, injector cleaner and Marvel Mystery Oil. Don't be shy with the oil, it may smoke for a bit but it seems to rejuvenate the cheap rubber in those carbs.

** Best case scenario: Remove the spark plug, scrape the carbon off, and start it back up. Worse case: I'd love to know how much additional energy in parts, labor, shipping, etc. we've used since "saving" gas by switching to ethanol. Related: I'm guessing ethanol has f*cked up your everything. You could probably start with the carberator, but don't be surprised if you end up replacing fuel lines and all kinds of other stuff. But hey, you're saving the environment by throwing away all those old once-good parts and replacing them with new stuff that had to be shipped in because crappy gas ruined your stuff. After years of struggling with 2 strokes I just buy the cans of premixed gas. Some doesn't have ethanol so you can store it in the tank for a while, but it's really expensive on a $/gal scale.
The 4 strokes... well about the only thing you can do, and it isn't really fool proof, is some sort of stabilizing agent. Personally, I dump my old gas from the mower, tiller, etc. in the gravel driveway where weeds typically grow and say; fuck it. Posted by: pep at June 18, 2021 09:07 PM (v16oJ) Yep. I was just using my Dixon ZTR this evening. It has this recurring problem. Mow, mow, mow, quit dead. Some piece of debris has blocked the outlet to the fuel tank. Pull line off carb, blow into it, clog clears. Then its good again for an indeterminate time. Could be a few minutes, could be several weeks. Since the immediate "fix" is so easy, i can't be bothered to take the fuel tank off and flush it out. There is a filter to catch finer particles that might damage the carb. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 18, 2021 10:01 PM (xOrmP) 218

The first time I ever visited my church was on Father's Day.
I was pretty depressed because my daughter was at her mom's house and I wasn't going to get to see her. A nice older woman walked up to me and asked if I was a father, even though I had long, straggly hair and a scruffy beard and was wearing a t-shirt and shorts and some sandals and kinda looked a lot out of place. I said I was, but that I wouldn't get to see my daughter because of the custody arrangement. She said "Your daughter loves you and wishes she was with you right now" and then she walked out into the lobby and got a brown paper sack that had a Moonpie and an RC Cola in it and told me happy Father's Day.
Posted by: Some rat in the swamp at June 18, 2021 09:17 PM (r1z5A) Concur. Ran into a real puzzler, once, on a 1950 Studebaker Champion six. Would always flood out and die at idle. Put it in Drive, and go more than 10 mph, and it would run out of gas and stall. Had the top off the carb several times, no clogs found. Finally discovered the seat for the float needle valve had come unscrewed about one full turn. The needle was jammed closed, but fuel pump pressure forced enough fuel through the space in the threads to flood it out at idle, but would not pass enough for it to run at cruise. And it was not immediately obvious, because the seat sat in a well in the carb body, so the threads could not be seen. Screwed it back in tight, and all was fine again. Re the Song Goodnight Saigon. I can see people liking it or at least being affected by it. I have listened to it many times and it is a powerful song. Another one of that ilk is "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda". That has become a revered Aussie song.
I saw a YT reactor with no skin in the game listen to it once. His reaction was what the Hell? This is the most anti OZ song ever, but they love it. Sure it is a fine line, war is hell. Different people express that truism in different ways. Oliver Stone dedicated Platoon to the soldiers who fought in Vietnam. *** It was all marketing. Fun fact: I remember reading an article in the early 90s or so discussing the music industry, and the big choice for superstardom decided upon by the recording industry at the time Springstein made it big was between him and Tom Waits. Somewhere there's an alternate universe where Springstein is recording interesting experimental music after evolving through some fantastic albums, and Tom Waits is a billionaire household name. Sure it was artistic license and tastes very. I personally can't stand the movie because, well, it is all there to see. My daughter and I were talking about a lighthouse she saw last week during summer camp at the beach. I told her that when she was three going on four we were at that same lighthouse and I carried her all the way to the top. I wanted her to see the view from there.
If you've ever visited a lighthouse it's you going around and up awkward, angled, and increasingly bunched up steps that don't seem to ever end. She was walking then but not super coordinated of course so I carried her. Up and up in an escherian nightmare of ascending circles. One arm because I used the other hand to steady myself on the rare occasion that a handrail was present. Her little weight felt like 80lb by halfway and a 150 when I got to the top. But it was worth it and I could show her across the coastal river inland, or out to the ocean, and how you could see into SC a whole other state, look at all the tiny people. I talked for a while because I knew it was gonna be difficult going down too. But it was a good daddy daughter day. Well, I asked her if she remembered all that. Nope. But I'd like to think it's still there as a different level of memory that forms some part of her life and makes it better. Posted by: banana Dream at June 18, 2021 10:50 PM (+BMD8) 428

Knopfler's amazing. Lots of his live stuff on YouTube. He told a good story about how he played Sultans of Swing and later on told his wife that the audience, which usually loves it, didn't. She said, "Did you play the deedly-deedly bits at the end?" I about died at the phrase, and so did the crowd. Everyone knows the deedly-deedly bits in that song. He admitted he hadn't, and had changed it up a bit. She told him that's their song. They paid him to play their song. It was quite poignant. I wish James Taylor would have heeded this advice, before doing an entire concert of his Greatest Hits, ALL changed completely -- meter, rhythm, phrasing, and tune. I would have walked the hell out. Especially at the price his tickets were for the show. Arrogant bastard didn't want anyone to hear their favorite songs. Didn't even realize that's what those songs *are*. Mark's wife was spot-on. That letter from the AZ attorney general is the kind of thing I was talking about.
If Congress passes laws and the states just refuse to follow them, what are they going to do? Do they plan to invade Arizona? Most of the military in a state is made up of reservists and National Guard. Precedent has already been set for local law enforcement to ignore federal laws without any repercussions. The left already set up conditions with their sanctuary cities. At the end of the day, the federal government is pretty powerless to enforce anything if a state refuses to cooperate. 427 If you've ever visited a lighthouse it's you going around and up awkward, angled, and increasingly bunched up steps that don't seem to ever end.

He wanted to keep Tom free from being corrupted, so that he would know there was one person he could still trust if the Havana deal caused treachery (which it did). Smart moves. Posted by: Hoyt's Paid Turkish Provovateur at June 18, 2021 10:54 PM (83lwH) 449

Music was my escape in the 80s, especially in the latter part of the decade, when I joined the Army and met my future Ex-ex and had my eldest daughter. The music I listened to at that time reminds me of those good times. 70s music reminds me of when I was a little kid in Alameda/Oakland, and 1980 was when my dad got orders for Pearl. 80s was when I came of age, so to speak. 90s was being a mom. 00s was being a soldier again and Iraq. Stands to reason, with the advent of Walkmans and boomboxes...and then mp3 players, music would kinda resonate with me. Posted by: SMH at June 18, 2021 11:05 PM (Ia2T7) 497

Probably way too late for Dave in Fla, but about states "repudiating" federal edicts/policies - on paper, and in some cases, OK. But hard to think of any of consequence.
Just 2 examples. Feds (again, as before 2017) are just abandoning rule of law on immigration, admitting 100s of thousands of illegal/fake asylum/no status migrants, distributing them all over, they've even stopped the risible kabuki of court summons. These people can go anywhere, forever, they're above the law (even if convicted of crimes and thereby deportable, ain't happening, ICE is now becoming a "sanctuary" facilitator via policy and budgets). So - nothing states can do. See court decision against AZ from 2011 for how helpless states are. And - environmental regs. Trump admin. was just getting around to trying to remove CA's disastrous choke-hold on automotive-related stuff. That's over, ain't returning. And market power = CA can and will continue to dictate to OK and TX and everyone else. On most big things, federalism is a great idea but lacks real-world clout. I used to hate sparkling water like Weird Dave. If you traveled around Europe you had to tell them "no gas" when you ordered bottled water. Mostly only Americans asked for tap water and I did that a lot.
I like good sparkling mineral water now from time to time. The German one, Gerolsteiner is worth trying. It has so much stuff in it, you can taste the salt and other stuff. The Topo Chico hard seltzer is an abomination though. If i have to drink that stuff, I would go for Truly Pineapple. Posted by: Quint at June 19, 2021 12:42 AM (gJfTA) 722

If I were in the Coyote business, I'd be mass producing wood-framed variants of the WWII "Waco" glider, and training Hose-A and Hose-B to minimally fly the damn things. DeHaviland Twin Otter to tow a pair of 'em up to about 12,000 ft., and break-tow about two miles short of the border. Glide ought to get 'em about five miles North of the border, and Good Luck from there! WAY cheaper than some kraut-built ersatz "sub" launched from South America to snorkel it's way North. Wood framed, doped fabric, minimal instrumentation, and a HUGE payoff for the pilot of a successfully landed payload. Solution? And correction: 3-inch/50 cal gun was smallest that could use the proximity-fuze (misleadingly termed "variable timing" or VT fuze for security), it was not radar-directed. But it's hitting power and range would provide much better close-in lethality ("close-in" at the time meant anything that got past fighter patrol and 5-inch guns) than the shorter-range/smaller Bofors or Oerlikons.
Tokkotai (special attack) doctrine for Olympic, I think, was actually to focus on transports. For all elements - aircraft, boats, frogmen. Learning curve, plus cultural issue. Okinawa they had focused on warships, especially carriers, consistent with cultural emphasis on fighting most dangerous enemy assets. But planners realized biggest payoff (= highest Allied casualty #, sole purpose of invasion defense) would be transports. Posted by: rhomboid at June 19, 2021 01:14 AM (OTzUX) 765

The "obsolete" Japanese biplanes were the original stealth aircraft, pretty much invisible to radar of the time. Coulda been a problem. Though payload limitations, and the difficulty of special attack missions in the dark, might have negated some of the advantages.

Powder Valley - major online reloading component vendor from KS - sez in latest industry update that primers should be returning to the market some time in the near future - but powder, not so rosy a picture.
They of course know the business, but I'm puzzled by this, as part of the primer issue is commercial demand, whereas (for the most part) powder produced for the mass market works different capacity than that which feeds commercial/military producers. They refer to massive new numbers of gun owners. But a very very small % of new gun owners are into reloading. Posted by: rhomboid at June 19, 2021 01:20 AM (OTzUX) 771

Clarifying. Increased primer imports should ease primer shortage, as commercial manufacturers use same primers as reloaders, so with total supply increasing, availability should improve for individuals. But industry uses different powders than reloaders - so on that front, excess/panic demand is more likely the issue, since the two demand blocs are drawing from different supply.

Very boring and matter of fact. He noted the number of 500 (!!!) year, 100 year, and 50 year droughts that had afflicted western North America, including what is now CA, in "recent" Earth history (probably just a few hundreds of thousands of years). My brother lived there at that time, and he had to flee to here b/c he couldn't survive no AC. Stayed a week, and still had trouble getting back home due to all the flooded/closed roads. Yeah, that one was bad bad bad. Posted by: GnuBreed at June 19, 2021 01:41 AM (F0YaR) 795
SMH. If I were to "drive truck", it would not be OTR. Regional or Dedicated Route, and Local would be best.
Any of 'em these days would make a decent living. But I have ZERO interest in being an OTR driver. That said, I admire Moron Robert. He's making a go of it, and seems to be doing damned well in the process. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 19, 2021 01:43 AM (QzJWU) 796

Lawnmower sounds like a clogged filter, absolutely. If the carb was varnished up, the needle valve won't move and it won't start at at all. Ask me how I know. A tip to keep that from happening during storage is to put a fuel cutoff valve in right before the carb and run the mower until it dies to keep varnish from accumulating.
Ethanol-free gas is a good idea, but if it's not available, put some gas stabilizer in it. That should help keep the rubber parts from melting too. Posted by: Jeff Weimer at June 19, 2021 02:26 AM (gkLMw) 820

My riding lawnmower seems to work just fine, but IU have a pressure washer that has required 2 carburetors due to varnishing. I also had to replace all of the in-tank hoses for my leafblower because they literally melted from the ethanol in the gas. Posted by: Jeff Weimer at June 19, 2021 02:39 AM (gkLMw) 824

"Fifty Two inches of rain from one storm. Houston area averages Forty Eight inches of rain, annually."
Yah the State took (paid for) 20 acres off the left side of our 200 acre farm in Rosenburg to build a new highway for hurricane evacuations coming out Houston and Galveston. I think(?) that's a good deal for us, because now our property will have frontage next to the highway to sell for gas stations, convenience stores, etc. Plus Rosenburg is expanind west toward us pretty quickly. We had to stop letting friends hunt on the farm because new housing was popping up inside the range fan. Posted by: Hoyt's Turkish Troll Provocateur at June 19, 2021 03:29 AM (83lwH) 832

I hate seeing people putting their kids in a stroller when they're older than like 2. (maybe less depends on the kid and where you're going)
For one children need exercise to grow their muscles and nerves which are still growing and not complete. Plus they have a need to explore and extend their boundaries. All this goes out the window when people strap their kids in a stroller and push them around everywhere. I understand young children are very hard to keep track of and keep up with. but as Parent your job is to see that the child grows up mentally, emotionally and physically and being strapped in a stroller like a prisoner in a mental ward is not how you do it. /Pet Peeve off (wish I could broadcast that to the world. Old mowers.
My Advice? Buy a new one. I had this old snapper, 20 years old, best mower I ever owned. Finally the engine quit, I replaced the engine with a used one, then breakdowns came fast and furious until I had spent what a new mower costs in fruitless repairs. SO, tired of the tall grass and spent money I bought a new one. Now I am happy. Posted by: obsidian at June 20, 2021 09:15 AM (7+yqP) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0944 seconds. |
