64 Hals painted during the era and in a region of the Dutch Baroque dominated by Calvinist ideals. In general, the clothing was pretty dark, plain and drab. Because the color palette was limited, the artist had to find other ways to make his works interesting. Sometimes, colorful props, like flags and banners, would be added, or a variety of poses. In works like this, the challenge is to enhance the individual personalities. Group shots like this allow for a lot of different expressions. This one, not so much as some of his other group portraits.

A poorhouse.
Alms: involves giving to others as an act of virtue, either materially or in the sense of providing capabilities (e.g. education) for free.

Alms is a form of charity. So a charity house is likely a place that houses beggars or the disabled. Like a homeless shelter.

I don't know because I've never heard of "almshouses" before, but that's my guess based on etymology.

67 I have the feeling that these paintings were done fairly quickly. The very plain background could be almost slapped on. All the important detail is in the faces and clothing of the subjects. Each is an individual and would be recognizable by viewers. Possibly they commissioned the paintings. Not awe inspiring art but very serviceable portraits.

Collective punishment, collective guilt is the bane of our existence. It does two terrible things; first, it absolves the individual of their responsibility, capacity for shame and remorse, secondly, it allows the redirection of blame to arbitrary and convenient targeted enemies of malevolent powers.

Corrupt individuals in a group love it when you blame the group and not them. A scientist lied = YOU HATE SCIENCE. A journalist is corrupt = YOU HATE THE FREE PRESS. A politician is corrupt = YOU HATE DEMOCRACY. A priest has committed horrible crimes against the vulnerable and innocent = YOU HATE RELIGION.

It's lazy and corrupts your own sense of morality. And gives tremendous power to people who should never have power over others.

There is a lockbox in the vestibule of my parish that has a sign on it "Alms for the poor".

I can't walk by it without reading it in Eric Idle's voice and laughing.

I am so going to hell.

The ep where Jennifer is complaining to Johnny Fever about Herb's constant come-ons, so Johnny tells Herb that "Jennifer Marlowe is the result of the most cunning sex-change operation ever performed."

Frank Bonner's absolutely hilarious and for a long minute completely dialogue-less reaction makes me lose it every damn time, no matter how many times I see it.

When he's finally able to sputter "Get! Out!" Johnny offhendedly says "alllll right" and starts to leave and Herb just slams the door closed so he can't leave.

Just classic. Bonner killed it.

My assumption is that the prosecutor knew he had bupkis and offered a slap on the wrist deal to avoid having to show his ass in court. For the McC's part, making it go away removes it as a possible hassle for his Senate run (which is probably quixotic anyway). I haven't seen anything that says they've agreed to not own guns, only to give up those particular guns. Again, a cheap but meaningless gesture on everybody's part. The important thing as far as they're concerned is that it's over.

194 Its a nothing charge..does NOT prevent them from buying other guns going forward. Win or lose it would cost more to even go to court. In a way, it is the prosecutors office way of surrendering.
_________

Yep, they only had to give up the guns they "brandished" (and those guns didn't work anyway). They're free to buy more guns (hopefully they'll buy ammo too next time). They only agreed to plead to misdemeanors, which doesn't affect their law licenses. It was a lot cheaper and less hassle for them than going to trial, which given all the lefty kooks in that area, would have been a risk.

The charges were bullshit, of course, but this is as close to a "win" as the McCloskeys were going to get, given the players involved.

I'd love to be taller, it would make clothes shopping easier with fewer alterations. Banana republic, for example, uses models who are about 5'10. Clothing is increasingly designed for taller women, and shortening the clothes does not always give you the same look as the entire garment is based on a taller size.

Coaching 10 yr Little league. Did not figure I needed a cup. Wrong answer!

Practice yesterday: Took a shot to the berries and the tip of the twig. Weeds in the infield as our team is the red-headed step child our league and we have weeds and grass in our infield. Bruises!

All is good, as I basically waterboarded the third baseman who had a bad throw (at the dirt, not my glove, and it hit a stout dandelion, so I missed the bounce catch) and we called it even (a pint or so of water up his nose as he forgot his water and I "helped" him. Much laughter).

I did get wonderful aftercare later that evening, so I had that going for me.

Gotta game tonight, so I pointed out the home field advantage. "You little miscreants l]now where the weeds are now!"

Yeah, they know what "miscreants" means now and giggled!

Activists widely expected Joe Biden to take swift action against the death penalty as the first sitting president to oppose capital punishment, especially since an unprecedented spate of executions by his predecessor ended just days before Biden took office.

Instead, the White House has been mostly silent.

Biden hasn't said whether he'd back a bill introduced by fellow Democrats to strike the death penalty from U.S. statutes. He also hasn't rescinded Trump-era protocols enabling federal executions to resume and allowing prisons to use firing squads if necessary, something many thought he'd do on day one.

Maybe it's all about the looting and burning, but why should one group get two holidays, and another get none? IMO we should have all the holidays we like and not have days off for them. Let people select a certain number of holidays off based on preference. I'll take Rosh Hashanah, someone else can take Christmas or Tet. We don't need to many federal days. In my area Jews are very much a minority, so why should all kids miss school for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? Why does everyone now need Diwali off? And when will that be a federal day using the Juneteenth formula?

This is sensible. Healthcare people usually have a bank of holidays they can distribute as they choose. I usually worked Christmas and Easter so that a Christian didn't get stuck with missing their church service and dinner with the family.

358 I'd say so. Frans Hals, the artist lived 1582-1666.

I find it hilarious that OM is here while everyone else is on the main page hitting F5 over and over.

361 Juneteenth is a great start, but there is so much more to be done!

Now we have to find more days of grievance and make them holidays. Like the day RuPaul was given his first TV contract as a day for trans rights.

366 I'm only going to watch commercials with black people in them. So all of them.

Speaking of that I saw the coppertone commercial again where the black girl was the main actor . Just shaking my head.

I don't think that lotion will give her a copper tone . Must change the name !

I thought was joking a couple of days ago when I wondered if my company was going to make it a company holiday. Maybe next year I'll lobby for St. Pat's Day and Cinco de Quatro.

374 It is now weird and shocking to see white people in commercials. I mean there is always a token whitey in commercials with a lot of people. But if it is just a coupe, or a family, seeing whites in those commercials is almost non existent.

375 The amount of virtue signaling on LinkedIn for Juneteenth is at 11. This one chick said today she will eat at black restaurants, shop at black boutiques and listen to Beyonce music.

You should reply that you're going to have watermelon, chicken, and grits. (Which is the name of a popular early 2000s rap album, and the origin of my theory that everything Yankees think is black is actually Southern).

376 Newark now has a 700 pound George Floyd statue in front of city hall. I assume many cities will honor George the same way in the next year. Or at least a street or avenue named after him.

Bill Maher had a good riff a week or two ago about all the blacks companies would need to hire to match their commercials.
