Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report - 6/1/21![]() Once upon a time long ago, we agreed there were certain immutable laws of human nature. These laws were based on facts, reality, and data. In other words, we accepted common sense about the way the world worked according to logical and even "scientific" principles. That assumption defined us as "enlightened" rather than Dark Age reductionists and ideological- or myth-driven zealots. Not now. "Progressives," especially the media, are most often regressive, anti-Enlightenment, and intolerant people, who start with a deductive premise and then make the evidence conform to it -- or else... ...What can learn from the rise of this new Dark Age mindset?... Modernism is a poor cloak of age-old ignorance. Living in the 21st century is no guarantee that humans will not act as if they are in the 16th. Our modern-day inquisitors share the same anti-science fury as those who put Galileo under house arrest for the crime of Copernicanism. Claiming that "white supremacists" are responsible for current epidemics of violence against Jews and Asian-Americans -- when most data and evidence point, in the former case, to Hamas supporters, and, in the latter, most frequently to African-American males, is our version of institutionalized geocentrism... ...The enemy of science is always dogma. In the medieval period, dogmas were often ossified Aristotelian concepts that were institutionalized by the Church on the theory they enhanced Christian exegesis and ritual, or, if lost, would eventually lead to an erosion of authority. In our era, the new religion is progressivism that prohibits free discussion of most of the major issues of modern life: When is life established in the womb? What is the degree of man-made climate change versus natural, cyclical climate change? Which groups are most likely to commit hate crimes? Is sex biologically determined or culturally constructed? What is the role of cultural attitudes in crime and social dependency? It may seem a stretch to suggest that the Left is leading us back to the pre-Enlightenment, given its corporate wealth, academic monopolies, Silicon Valley technological wizardry, and progressive sanctimoniousness. But arrogance, wealth, and received authority are always the super-spreaders and force-multipliers of false knowledge, and none more so than in the present age.In spite of everything, I do get a sense that the vast majority of us know and understand what the hell is going on and in many ways are already trying to organize and resist. That means, as we see with the continued vaccination crap, the racialist blood-libeling, and all the other garbage hurled at us from every direction, the beatdowns will continue until morale improves.

This trip to B'More has involved a rather large number of visits to local businesses stretching from College Park, near D.C. up into Harford County, a mostly conservative county in Maryland. It may seem a stretch to suggest that the Left is leading us back to the pre-Enlightenment, given its corporate wealth, academic monopolies, Silicon Valley technological wizardry, and progressive sanctimoniousness./i]
++++ This is true and is undeniably true. By my reading of history, it has been true for probably fifty years. Fifty years ago, though, a statement like this would get you locked in an asylum for the insane. Thirty years ago, you'd be branded as a reactionary and ignored. Twenty years ago, some people would listen and the elites would titter about "conspiracy theories" and "wing nuts." Ten years ago, this would be a sizzling "hot take." Now, though? None of the above. Now it is merely demonstrably true. This isn't a bold claim anymore because it is clearly the reality. Hell, at this point the Left isn't even hiding it. What is "The Great Reset" if not a return to feudalism under a new, high-tech, interconnected technocratic ruling class? The mashed potato brained idiot went to Tulsa to keep hatred ginned up. We all know it. And look at what's bubbling barely under the surface. Rally cries to kill white people. Let us imagine any kind of rally, a Trump rally for instance, where speakers with microphones and megaphones called for killing black people. I do believe the reaction would be a bit different. White people are going to get massacred at some point. How many, who knows. But they are stoking this madness on purpose. People will lose their lives because of what these Democrats are fostering, incubating, nurturing. They are the epitome of pure evil.

That said, the very good reasons I oppose mask policy doesn't explain my overt hostility when I see large numbers of people in masks and have to interact directly with the masked. That is visceral. It makes me angry and hostile, and that isn't rational. I think it's instinctual. I have given it a lot of thought and I think I have an "uncanny valley" problem with the masked masses. I think I see them as imposters, as fake people, as non-humans trying to pass as one of us. It makes me wildly uncomfortable and angry all the time. From the essay above, "A Memorial Day for the Republic." Such a sentiment is too radical for any conservative politician to conceive and certainly to utter. If Galileo had not been a prick, he wouldn't have been under house arrest. What everyone seems to forget as well is that Copernicanism was, at that time, still a matter of controversy with respect to modified Ptolmaic geocentrism as propounded by Brahe.
This. Pope Urban VIII repeatedly told Galileo he was free to talk about his theories all he wanted, so long as he pointed out that they were just theories. But Galileo insisted he was telling the truth, and needlessly screwed himself. It was never "big bad stupid church hates SCIENCE!" but "dumbass astronomer doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut." Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at June 01, 2021 07:25 AM (2JVJo) 150
Our modern-day inquisitors share the same anti-science fury as those who put Galileo under house arrest for the crime of Copernicanism.
This is wrong. Galileo wasn't punished for Capernicanism (which was well accepted as a theory within the Church), but for straying out of science and into theology. He had been investigated twice before by the Inquisition, and both times they had concluded that he'd done nothing wrong, since he had been discussing matters of science and thus the Church wasn't concerned. In fact, the Church had been Galileo's biggest patron, celebrating his discoveries and promoting his work. The Pope even asked him to write a book on the geocentrism/heliocentrism debate! The third time was only after he burned every bridge with the scientific and religious communities, insulted the Pope, and had started discussing how the Bible should be interpreted. And ultimately, they put a seventy year old man with rheumatoid arthritis who hated to travel under house arrest in his seaside villa. Hardly a punishment. This after a trial in which he was quartered in papal apartments and given a team of theologians and scholars to assist in his defense. The young have been convinced that they must mask up to save grandma and grandpa, that they will kill them if they don't. Their love for family has been weaponized against them.
Posted by: Lizzy I'm not so sure that's it. If you have a chance, ask them to probe their ideas about it. The ones I've spoken with are terrified for themselves, not grandpa (me). Many feel I am going to infect them, or their little kids - and, as we know, that's statistically damn near impossible. I think it is generally the young have not yet observed enough life and aren't (yet) the cynics we are about politicians, 'expert' orgs, etc. We've lived it. ******* This is a typical crap clickbait headline over a typical crap sensationalist article misrepresenting a study that says nothing of the sort. This article merely perpetuates the insanity of pretending that the SARS-2 virus has reconfigured the entirety of known virology and immunology. No, it is not true that everything we have previously learned about the human immune system is no longer operational. At most the "study" shows that antibodies were detectable for several months and that plasma cells were detectable in bone marrow as far out as a year. This is always the case with viral infections. Trump brought a diverse coalition of new voters into the Republican Party. I was speaking with a few of these people over the weekend when the subject of Paul Ryan came up. Their reaction was a collective "who?".
It's about time some people realized that not only are they irrelevant to today's voters, but the policy prescriptions of the past were abject failures whose collapse and reformation into new policies heralded a whole new generation of Republican voters. Nobody is nostalgic for the Republican Party of the past, save the Gingrich era. We've had years of failure, phony principles, outright lies, gratuitous abandonment and watering down of the party into Democrats-Swamp-Lite. No thanks. Never again. Zimbabwe is an interesting story. I followed that country for years in the news from Africa. White farmers were kicked off their land that had been in the family for a long time. Black people who knew nothing about farming were given the farms and they farms fell into ruin. Along with hyper inflation, the country was a mess. Not so sure what is happening there now, since Mugabe is gone. For those who don't know, Zimbabwe is the former Rhodesia, a British colony. Harare is the capital, formally known as Salisbury.

This is one of the many problems with a zero-trust society. It could be true, it could be lies, it could be an overreaction, it could be anything. No one really knows because no one can be trusted. I will say, though, that my "worry barometer" did start to move on this topic, for one reason. I launched the YouTube app on my smart TV yesterday to watch a video. On the home screen (I don't use YT as a signed-in user, so I get a lot of generic stuff on my home screen below the "based on your view history" section), in the ever-present COVID section, the first three videos were all of good-looking people in lab coats with "MD" and "PhD" in their titles talking about how there is no evidence of any problems with any of the vaccines with regard to reproduction or fertility. Look at Rick Scott, as referenced above. If roles were reversed and it were BLM goons being held incommunicado, do you think they would be content with form letters? Not on your fucking life. They would be surrounding his house, fireboming his office, beating his staffers into comas and come as close as dammit to lynching him until he did something.
But us? "That's not who we are." "You first, keyboard warrior." "The LEOs aren't on our side." "We have jobs." FTS. I am never going to make it through the next 213 days. Industry, factories, high energy, transportation, etc. are basically all inventions of the British, Americans and Germans, with a smattering of other Europeans. The "Dark Ages" really didn't exist. It was more about our lack of knowledge about the era than any comment on their state of knowledge. Sure, there were pockets of collapse throughout Western Europe, but they were fairly local and civilization overall continued to advance and grow. Meanwhile the Eastern Empire continued on for almost a thousand years without any dark age to speak of.

Posted by: Eli Cash at June 01, 2021 08:21 AM (SScvq) ++++ I think that nuclear retaliation against China would be justified. I am not at all certain that it would be fully proper or the best move. Some sort of retribution is absolutely called for - possibly expulsion from all international organizations and a blockade to start - but I think that nuclear retribution, while justified, might be inappropriate. I am not sure. I struggle with the moral question of that. In WWII, which was a total war in which every facet of every belligerent country was involved in the war effort, there was a very strong argument to be made that while there non-combatants there were actually no civilians. Leveling enemy cities during that war was entirely justified given the nature of the conflict. With a place like China, though, which is a slave state with a massive captive population that is not involved (within a few degrees of separation), I have a harder time. "Is it appropriate to slaughter the slaves to punish the masters" is a question I struggle with. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 01, 2021 08:26 AM (Jsjd7) 377

And what about the systemic stupidity they're fostering? Classics majors without Latin and Greek?!! Nuts. Will they provide comic books versions of The Iliad and the The Odyssey because some students are impacted by systemic racism and can't read the actual texts even in an English version? No, it was just wrong. That doesn't mean I'm going to call for the cancellation of the Catholic Church over something that happened 500 years go, but it was wrong. The way we do things now is better. Life is better by just about every measurable objective standard than it was in the days of Galileo. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at June 01, 2021 08:28 AM (5YSMW) 390

THIS IS PURE FUCKING EVIL For the first time since 1991, the US imported oil from Iran. We are hurtling back to the Dark Ages imho. The Dark Ages were when feudal lords ruled over the toiling peasants making their lives miserable and hopeless. It reminds me of what's happening now. OK "hurtlilng" was hyperbolic, but still it's the Dark Ages we're entering again. Dark indeed.

Interesting blurb in the "NY Post" today on the Christian baker, Jack Phillips, being harassed in the Pacific NW-either WAS or OR. I forget which.
Why I didn't 'bake that cake". At First Things, Jack Phillips, the evangelical baker whose refusal to bake a cake for a same sex wedding was vindicated by the Supreme Court in 2018, explains his fateful decision: "My beliefs don't have to be your beliefs. But my beliefs are what what made me who I am. My commitment to God and to the truth of a book which I believe to be his holy Word is the defining premise of my life, the focus of my faith and the guiding directive for my actions. If you ask me to separate all that from my work, from my decisions, from my art....I simply can't do that. Not just won't....can't." Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 01, 2021 08:35 AM (k39e/) 418

Right up there with the dueling Trayvon Martin family t-shirt businesses. As I said above, it's gross, but it's also them aknowledging that the race hustling is big business
___________ I thought it was particularly galling that Trayvon's biological mother is the one who spear-heads that particular grift, considering the fact that she didn't even raise her own kid, and when Trayvon's father's marriage to Trayvon's stepmother Alicia failed, the father asked Trayvon's bio mother to take him in for a while. Bio-Mommy dearest, who loved Trayvon so deeply that you should fill her coffers with your money to ease her pain, could only tolerate the kid for a few months before deciding she didn't want to put up with him, and gave him back to his father to deal with. Trayvon's father then parked the kid with his current GF, who lived in the apartment complex where Trayvon met his fate. George Zimmerman says that Trayvon's last words, spoken after George shot him were: "Tell Mama 'licia I'm sorry." (Mama 'licia was his step-mother Alicia, the woman who had raised him). Yet that skank no-show bio-mom is the one out hustling for blood money in Trayvon's name. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at June 01, 2021 09:02 AM (k4dH2) 429

This is repeating myths about Galileo that we now know to be false, based on the writings of people who were actually involved, rather than modern myths from movies.
The Church was not angry about Galileo saying that the earth went around the sun, they were actually leaning his way on that (as shown by the fact that they agreed with it shortly thereafter, as well as their writings at the time), they were angry that Galileo then went on to theological speculation from that, he was horning in on their territory. Also, his theology did not make logical sense, he should have stuck with science. And the other scientists were mainly angry, not with his science, but his personal insults to them to support his science. Galileo was not a nice guy. The idea that it was 'science versus the church" is a myth. Posted by: Nightfall at June 02, 2021 12:01 AM (NuOWG) Processing 0.08, elapsed 0.089 seconds. |
