The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
James A. Garfield, Ohio Congressman, May 30, 1868, Arlington National Cemetery

*

Quote II

"Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die." – G.K. Chesterton

*

Quote III

"But freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it and then hand it to them with the well-thought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same. And if you and I don't do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it once was like in America when men were free." – Ronald Reagan

*

Quote IV

“On this Memorial Day, we remember the fallen heroes who took their last breaths in defense of our Nation, our families, our citizens, and our sacred freedoms,”

“The depth of their devotion, the steel of their resolve, and the purity of their patriotism has no equal in human history. On distant battlefields, in far-off oceans, and high in the skies above, they faced down our enemies and gave their lives so that America would prevail,” President Donald J. Trump

Why the Purpose of a Fight is to Win

I devoutly hope that Cooper’s heirs will reprint this nifty little collection of annotated quotes for the reading pleasure of current generations. Let’s look at a sample. There’s no better place to start than the words of one Winston Churchill:

Never give in. Never, never, never, never! Never yield in any way, great or small...Never yield to force and the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

Do you have the slightest doubt about Churchill’s intent? It is a forceful statement of resolve, almost to the point of being reckless. In response to that possibility, consider the included quote of Eric Hoffer, America’s longshoreman-philosopher:

The sickness of the late 20th Century is cowardice. Anger is the only cure for cowardice—anger strong enough to overcome fear.

For those who fully contemplate violent actions to achieve these goals, they would be well advised to consider a quote from Theodore Roosevelt:

Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die, and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life. Both life and death are part of the same Great Adventure.

So enjoy your $3.00/gallon of gas while it lasts.

WSJ Sounds Alarm: $5 Gasoline Nationwide After Biden's Proposed Actions

On Jan. 18, two days before Joe Biden took the oath of office, the price of gas was $2.46 nationally, according to the Energy Information Administration. On May 24, it was $3.11.

While part of that was the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, the upward trend had begun well before that, data shows. Either way, $3 gas was a shock to American drivers, particularly before the Memorial Day weekend; it’s the highest per-gallon prices America has seen since the Obama administration.

Yet, according to a member of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, you should enjoy it while you can. California drivers would love these prices, after all — and she believes you’re going to be seeing the same policies that caused those gas prices exported to the rest of the United States.

Whatever happened to the 3 Rs? Public schools once again demonstrate that they are sewers.

Inside the unlicensed counseling that led Boston students to allege emotional abuse
Boston Public Schools allowed students to be subjected to unorthodox group therapy for years

As a Boston high school sophomore, Keondre McClay said he was pressured by the head of a district-sponsored youth advocacy program to attend an overnight retreat in Newton, where white adults asked the Black teenager to wrestle out his emotions on a gym mat with them. They said it would help him purge his trauma from experiencing racism.

McClay fled to his room. Jenny Sazama, the program leader, and other retreat participants chased after him. For more than an hour, he recalled recently, they hugged him on his bed and entreated him to return to the group “counseling” session while he hid under the covers screaming, “Please leave me alone!”

If you really loved me, you would marry me. So our divorce wouldn't be so FUBAR.

Omaha doctors get a divorce but can't agree on when — or whether — they got married

Forget about spacing off an anniversary date.

Two Omaha doctors can’t even agree on when, where or whether they ever got married.

The husband, Dr. Tyron Alli, questions whether he was officially married. His former wife, Dr. Patricia Seivert, insists they were married twice — once on a beach in Hawaii and once in their living room in Omaha.

The contentiousness over such a simple fact — when and whether they got married — was just part of a case that took the (wedding) cake.

The couple-million-dollar divorce out of Douglas County went all the way to the Nebraska Supreme Court for the high court to decide, among other things, their actual wedding date.

In essence, the Supreme Court recently ruled, it’s not enough for a couple to live together for decades, have four children together, file taxes together and tell anyone who listens that they’re together.

Nope, the high court says, state law requires them to formalize their marriage through a marriage license, a certificate of marriage and a ceremony presided over by a licensed officiant.

In its May 21 ruling, the Nebraska Supreme Court seemed to suggest that it wasn’t entirely satisfied with the way state law spells out what constitutes marriage.

BBC Covid distancing sensor devices beset by noise and fire safety issues

Staff claim body-worn proximity devices have been withdrawn after one started smoking

When the BBC bought thousands of proximity sensors in January, the hope was that they would protect staff by aiding compliance with Covid-19 social distancing rules in newsrooms. Instead, it has had to deal with fears that the body-worn electronic devices could set themselves on fire – and complaints that they were so noisy, they disrupted recordings.

The Bluetooth technology was introduced in January to ensure that employees who had to go into the office and work as part of a team stayed 2 metres apart. The idea was that any employees in the office, usually journalists working on key news programmes, would wear them around their neck or in their pocket. If colleagues got too close to one another, an alarm would warn them to back away

The wisdom wizdumb of childhood. How many of these can you relate to?

If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42-pound boy wearing pound puppy underwear and a superman cape.
It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can to spread paint on all four walls of a 20×20 ft. room.
If you use a waterbed as home plate while wearing baseball shoes it does not leak – it explodes.
A king-size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 square foot house 4 inches deep.
A 3-year-old’s voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.
A six-year-old can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year-old man says they can only do it in the movies.
A magnifying glass can start a fire even on an overcast day.
The fire department has at least a 5 minute response time.
Always look in the oven before you turn it on.
Plastic toys do not like ovens.
Always locate the hamster and look in the oven before you turn it on.

If all the luck you have is bad luck. You might be a Genius Award Winner.

A Roaring Spring man who was in jail when police say they found about 2 lbs. of psilocybin mushrooms after they responded to his empty house for a possible break-in now faces fresh drug charges.

It was about 5 p.m. on May 22 when Roaring Spring police were called by a neighbor who reported the storm cellar door to Berkheimer’s house on Bloomfield Street was open and there was glass broken out of the basement window, according to court documents.

Responding officers said the storm cellar door was off and pushed aside, the glass was broken out of the basement door window and copper piping was at the bottom of the steps in the doorway.

The copper pipe sticking out of the door made officers think someone may still be inside, so they crawled through the door window to check the house.

None of us died in service, which is probably a miracle of some kind. However, any number of friends and coworkers have given great measure to defend and protect what we hold dear, and for that I salute them all and lift up a prayer that what they suffered for will prevail and take a triumphant place in the world forever more.

55 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Yes, get ready for $5/gal gas. Inflation is absolutely ripping. The index for "core" increased month over month by 0.7%. Annualize that (compounded) and that's an annual rate of 8.7%

Throw in food and energy and it's 1.2% for the month, which would compound out to 15.4% annual rate. When you see their annual figures, they are giving you year over year. That is the increase since the same time last year.

Those numbers are 1980 levels, when 70s stagflation was peaking.

Oh and in April, personal income fell by 13%. That was the last round of stimmy checks petering out.

So, on average, the average income fell 13%, and what you could buy with that less money fell by 15% annually. That happened over April. So, if that trend continues over a year, well, it's a bloodbath.

80 years ago, 16 year old boys were volunteering to go to Europe and possibly get killed in a real war with real bullets and real dead people due to a combination of honor culture and the manly-man hero thing.

This year, 36 year old man-children sleep with masks on because they got scared shitless by some guy on TV.

It's this kind of thinking that leads to the huge wars like the one we had 80 years ago.

163 Emmie,

Sorry I missed you. Yes, some creepy mad scientists are thinking about contagious vaccines. That is give someone a vaccine, which would be some sort of virus or other agent that would give immunity, but spread. This is seen as a way to get around vaccine hesitancy, or poor delivery and all that.

However, there is nothing here in any of these vaccines that appear to be engineered to be contagious. Does not mean something could shed from one to another at some incidence level. I've seen claims about shedding spike protein and stuff like that. I don't know, but I think this is probably not something to worry about.

IIRC, one of the early attempts at polio vaccines became unintentionally contagious years ago. The weakened virus got stronger again.

That's something I've noticed...up until a couple of weeks ago the stores that were into the mask things had very large, very brightly colored "FACE COVERINGS REQUIRED TO ENTER" type signs. Usually on the sliding door itself so it's impossible to not see it. Now they've been taken down and replaced by some very fine-print signs that you really have to look for that specify all the special conditions and whatnot, 'we politely suggest you follow CDC recommendations' and suchlike. One local up-market grocery store went so far as to provide a copy of the said recommendations in the form of a matrix, which as you might expect from actual government guidelines are about the most equivocal and obtuse thing imaginable.

Very interesting, and sudden, change.

I went to the Princess Auto store not far from the scrap dealer, as I am need of some shop supplies, but there was a line-up of poor bastards, wearing the face diapers, waiting to get into the store, so I said, "Fuck that noise!" and put the truck in going-home gear and got out of Dodge.

AiC - the BEST of the grunge era bands. Was fortunate enough too see them as openers for Van Halen at the old Capital Centre in 1991 or 1992. They were relatively unknown to most folks there. I was ahead of the curve and already a fan. The arena floor and stands were pretty much empty during their set. To the few of us who "borrowed" up-front seats to watch AiC, it was quite a performance.

Nowhere near the 10 percent number that Kinsey was responsible for.

Yes, the spike protein itself is pathogenic of its own. It produces and inflammatory response especially in endothelial cells (such as line your blood vessels. This adds to the problem with severe Covid disease greatly.

Some people are very sensitive to it, and this is what is likely causing the blood clot (and heart inflammation, amongst others) side effects. Some Kraut paper was out proving that mechanism for the blood clots with the A-Z vaccine.

The mRNA ones leak spike protein in general circulation as well.

I'm not convinced that being gay is entirely genetic. Sexual orientation, sexual attraction, and sex drive are all separate things, and I think are likely the result of a variety of factors, including genetics, psychology, and environmental factors. And they're linked to other aspects of a person's identity and physiology as well.

The were pretty sure no spike would get out into circulation like that. They were wrong. It does.

This is why you don't just throw some new experimental treatment out there. You need to carefully, carefully test and monitor with small steps. It takes years to do this right. The newer and more unknown the experimental treatment is, the longer it takes.

Yeah what we need to to continue to feed the pretenses and pretexts needed for the continued destruction of our way of life indefinitely.

The donks used the coof as the excuse to enable their fraud, and by God the system made sure that not only did they not pay a price but that they were rewarded with total control.

We could have voted our way out, we now have to either comply our way out or rebel.

You see a lot of evidence for rebellion on this matter?

Why don't you let Mrs. Z read some of those papers I've linked to, especially that "open letter" to the WHO Denninger put up. It rips apart the "safety and efficacy" claims from the limited clinical trials.

Basically, no one not at risk for severe Covid disease should take it. Risk outweigh benefit. Those who've been infected have now proven natural immunity likely better than the vaccine. There is no benefit there at all, only risk.

In young people, looking at the NNT and shit you find it looks like prevent 1 case of serious Covid will cost you 13 severe adverse reactions (like blood clots, etc).

So, only those at high risk should even be considered.

And the problem with high risk is there isn't enough data to say what the efficacy is, even? The trial samples were "general population". Well, mostly --a lot of exclusions, including pregnant women. If you didn't know better, you might think were trying to exclude very high risk groups.

So they efficacy stats apply only the whole group, not the high risk cohort. Not enough data to draw conclusions.

It's possible that it could make it worse! Crazy shit like this has happened before. You find a treatment does improve some, but makes it worse in others.

Suppose some one comes up with a pill to prevent dick gangrene. And they tell you it has a 90% efficacy. Wow, right?

Well, you need to look at absolute risk. Suppose your lifetime risk of getting said dick gangrene is 0.01%. Treatment reduces that risk to 10% to 0.001%.

Oh, Number Needed to Treat, or NNT. That's another important one, and is just the inverse of the absolute risk difference. In the dick gangrene example above, we have an absolute risk difference of 0.009%.

The NNT is thus 100/.009 or 11,111. We would need to treat over 11K people to save one case of dick gangrene.

Suppose the treatment costs $1000 total. We'd need to spend $11M to save one case of dick gangrene.

I picked an extreme example of course. Even Fauxci couldn't propose such a treatment without being laughed out of his job.

That's freedom, folks. That's all it takes under Oklahoma common law, and we've never had a problem with it. My late, sainted, Chicagoan mother-in-law took a while to accept that we really were legally married. Only accepted it after she came to visit us in Oklahoma, met my own mom, and realized that "common law" marriage is really not common; Milady and I were just... weird eccentric.

We still plan to have a real wedding party, though. Missed out on that. Maybe on the 50th anniv in a couple of years.

This NNT thing is important. All the (Pharma sponsored) clinical trials usually don't report it directly (some do, if it's really good). THey concentrate on relative risk reduction. Turns out that for acute conditions, a NNT of 5 or less is about the cut-off. A drug has more than that, it's probably not too effective.

For preventative treatments, you encounter much higher NNTs, triple digits even. For example, the NNT of statins is anywhere from 60 to over 200, depending on just what you're preventing. In high risk groups, it can be as low as 15.

One can conclude that these high NNTs might be a scam, costing a hell of a lot of money for very little benefit. A responsible doctor and regulatory people might look at that, and only use thing for the high risk groups where the NNT aren't as crazy high.

But that's not the whole story. You've got look at NNH, number needed to harm, which takes into account the side affects and shit. If NNH is on the order of NNT, you've got a cure worse than the disease.

But it depends on harm vs treatment. If positive treatment is not dying, then some harm not rising to dying might be advisable. Cancer drugs, for example.

421 This is a damn good paragraph from VDH's latest offering at American Greatness :

Modernism is a poor cloak of age-old ignorance. Living in the 21st century is no guarantee that humans will not act as if they are in the 16th. Our modern-day inquisitors share the same anti-science fury as those who put Galileo under house arrest for the crime of Copernicanism. Claiming that "white supremacists" are responsible for current epidemics of violence against Jews and Asian-Americans--when most data and evidence point, in the former case, to Hamas supporters, and, in the latter, most frequently to African-American males, is our version of institutionalized geocentrism.

You know, the risk vs. benefit thing can get quite non-trivial, quite complex.

You've probably heard of the "kill or cure" treatment. This treatment will either cure a patient, or kill him. Luckily, that's not a common thing, but there have been examples historically.

Example. Some disease or condition results in say 8 people out of 10 being severely disabled for life, with 2 dying.

There is some treatment. 6 out of 10 will be cured with no impairment, but 4 will die.

You're a doctor, what do you do? The choice is 6 cured patients and 4 dead, or 8 severely disabled and fucked-up for life patients and 2 dead.

423 A final tale for the holdouts in the wee hours at the end of the long wee kend.

Memorial weekend Sunday, family indoor picnic at Mom's, in OilSlick City. Hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, watermelon, apple pie -- a menu so American it makes you doff your cap.

At the head of the dining-room table, there's my 101yo mom. There's our daughter and her husband, there's son M, young cousin S, Milady, and me, all down from Smallville; none of us even gives a passing thought to such a thing as wearing a mask.

Down at the end of the table, up from BigCity, are son C, and his wife, with their young boy and girl, our grandbabies. The parents wore masks the whole time. The almost-3yo boy's mask was usually askew or forgotten. At least his baby sister had no smile suppressor. Oh, and Son C has taken to wearing a skirt. No more was said of that than was said of the masks.

Just like a Norman Rockwell painting. ♥

Clocking out.

If those patients are conscious and of sound mind, you tell them and let the make the call, of course. You've got a 20% of dying now, but if you live, you'll be a basket case. I can try something, but you have a 40% chance of dying, but a 60% chance of being fully cured.

They make the call. You do what they tell you.

But what if they aren't conscious and of sound mind. They're out of their heads. Next of kind make that call, of course. But what if there is none available. You make the call.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 01, 2021 01:06 AM (Mzdiz)

425
It it were me, I'd go with the 60/40. I'd say, and may God have mercy on my soul, and I'd save 6 at the cost of 4, rather than the 8 basket cases and 2 dead.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 01, 2021 01:11 AM (Mzdiz)

426
Now, let's make it even more interesting. Control group, 60% will recover, 20% will be basket cases, and 20% will die. Same 60/40 cure or kill odds for the treatment group.

If it were all me, I'd not treat. But, if the patient or next of kind can choose, then I still pose the question.

The odds apply to each individual. The total will be the same, but it could be that someone who was in the 20% who would die would be cured. And likewise it could be that one in the 60% who would live would be killed. But one of the basket cases could be saved.

Same probability of curing either way. But very different odds of dying vs basket case. If you would rather die than be a basket case, you go with treatment.

NNT and NNH calcs by public health groups; insider shit that I haven't been exposed to before. Good stuff.

As to the polio vaccine -- There's an article at NIH on the mutations of the weakened live virus, where it has 'reverted' to a virulent form (capable of producing paralysis), now endemic in countries formerly clear of polio. These countries/regions include parts of Africa, Indonesia, and China.

Naturally occurring polio is now limited to Pakistan/Afghanistan... Paralytic cases of polio are mainly occurring now in vaccinated areas, at a 3:1 rate over the natural shit.

In other words, the cure is WORSE than the disease right the fuck now.

I was thinking about my choices above in those scenarios. It's interesting. In all cases, I am placing life about "bad outcome". My own personal preference, would be life, death, basket case. That is, I would rather die than be a basket case. But when making the decision for others, I place life above all, but yet assign equal weight to death vs basket case.

I made these choices by my gut, thinking about what I would do on a moment's notice with the above kill or cure choices vs odds of doing nothing. I then analyzed what my gut was actually doing.

My gut values life above all else, saying anyone who would choose otherwise is irrational. Thus contradicting personal choice there is no big deal. However, the choice of basket case vs. death is not mine to make. Either one is rational. A matter of conscience.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 01, 2021 03:06 AM (Mzdiz)

433 So my gut's choices put life above all, and give equal weight to basket case vs death. That explains my actions. In the first case, going with treatment means I get more value, 6 alive, and 4 dead, a score of 6, over 8 basket cases and 2 dead, a score of 0.

In the second case, the scores are equal, 6 alive, vs 4 dead, a score of 6. so I default to doing nothing, no treatment.

Again, I was going by my gut, not thinking it out per "scores". When I analyze the scores, I see what my gut was doing.

I am making rational orderings of things, imposing them, yet recognizing certain things are matters of individual preference for which reason and logic cannot order and thus must be equal.
