Ace of Spades Pet Thread

(Clearly PetMorons)

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. We really appreciate you stopping by on a spring afternoon to check out the wonderful world of animals.

***

A Little of This. A Little of That.

I'm not telling you how to take care of your dog. But........There's a reason why there are crates/kennels for dogs.

***

I try to keep politics and current events out of the Pet Thread. However, our friend and fellow Moron Hrothgar sent this to me. Climate alarmists could cancel your pet ownership.

Talk about a pet peeve. The climate alarmists have come for your pets. No, really. A new report from Vox.com is now urging the public to consider offering a home to other pets besides dogs and cats. Why?

The report says their respective diets and lifestyles contribute to global warming for various reasons. In addition, the toilet needs of contemporary dogs include the use of pastel-colored poop bags while cats visit litter boxes where the filler is not necessarily made of natural, eco-friendly materials like wood shavings.

“Are our pets gobbling up the planet? From the meat-based meals to kitty litter to plastic poop bags, pet care is unarguably bad for the environment,” Vox said, offering ways to reduce pets’ carbon pawprint and citing the perils of pet waste — equivalent to “the annual trash of 6.6 million humans.”

One of the first things I told the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum. when we were dating was that I loved a particular breed of dog and I would always have one. She was cool with that. I don't see this relationship entering into the "Long lasting phase".

Correct me if I’m wrong, but when people fall in love with someone really hard, they’re ready to sacrifice anything. Well, almost. We can stop biting nails, eat less junk, and swap that beloved gross hoodie we never part with for a nice shirt, but when it comes to pets, it’s a whole different story.

A 22-old-man has been dating his girlfriend for 7 months and according to him, “she’s amazing and we’re super compatible in a lot of ways.” She’s also a vegan, a fact which shouldn’t make a whole lot of difference, but the way she approaches veganism kind of does.

Cute photos to brighten your day.

Below are two pics of our cat (Houdini) and dog (Fenway) from casa de Our Country is Screwed. ‘Dini is 2yrs old feline we adopted as a kitten, and Fenway is a Flatcoat Retriever mix who is 10. You’ve shared them a couple of times on prior Pet Threads, which I thank you for. These two bring much joy and companionship to our home.

‘Dini, pictured below, had hopped up on my legs just as I sat down on the couch and put my feet up. If the eyes don’t give it away, she is absolutely full of personality.

The next picture ‘Dini coming out of hiding and planning on some mischief against Fenway.

AKA “Our Country is Screwed”

The key part of your submission, "These two bring much joy and companionship to our home." I couldn't agree with you more when I look at our 2 knuckleheads. Thanks for stopping by with this story and photos.

Long time lurker, rare commenter JR. Attached are two pics, grand-dog Hank at three months and just short of six months. He is now a 75lb termite, no piece of wood is safe around him. He has it rough: walks, treats, snoozing on the couch, crashing my video meetings. Don't trust Hank, Hank is asshoe!

I know this is supposed to be a G-Rated Family Friendly Thread. But, I call Bull Shit. How could such a cutie be an asshoe?

Max crossed the Rainbow Bridge into canine Valhalla in early March after twelve wonderful years with me. I was sent to work in Washington DC, Sodom on the Potomac, on temporary duty for six months that stretched into over two and a half years. I had lost my yellow Lab about a year before and my wife wanted a break from dogs. When the job assignment came up, I told her it would be lonely and I needed a companion. The choices were a puppy or a stripper. Needless to say, I got Maximus at eight weeks old instead of an exotic dancer. That was twelve and a half years ago. The photo is of Max sprawled out in my chair, his favorite spot. He is greatly missed and is survived by my two year old black Lab, Angus. Now Angus needs a new friend to keep him occupied when I work, so I am again on the hunt for a new pup (Not for me, but for my bud Angus). Thank you again for running the best thing on the interwebs, The Pet Thread. I never miss it. - "Texas 1911" an I am a lurker

First of all our condolences on the loss of Max. Personally, I know the strains of a long distance marriage and my K9 companion was what kept me sane. Good luck on your search. Thank you for sharing today.

This is my little Daphne Moon. After being owned by Goldens and Labs for the past 20 years, I now have this little 5 lb. character. DM is my first adoption, and she came home with me right before the China virus shutdown. I had lost my chocolate Lab, Marley, not even a year earlier, and I was still heartbroken and not looking for another pet - until fate stepped in.
Then along came Daphne. My first experience with a small breed, and she is delightful and hilarious. She can also try my last nerve, but I suspect I try hers at times, as well.
I cannot thank you enough for the Pet Thread. I look forward to it every week, and it is my treat on Sunday mornings. - Daphne Moon in Dixie

It is a funny thing how God works and in mysterious ways as well. Daphne sounds like your typical dog when it comes to the nerve thing. Congrats on your new addition and may you two have many happy years together!

Warmongerel here. Infrequent commenter, frequent lurker.

While surfing the web, I ran across this picture of a kitten. I sent it to my daughter with a note: "Ha ha, looks like your cat". She showed it to her friend from whom she got the cat and it turns out that, of all the billions of pictures on the web, I just happened to run across the first picture ever taken of her cat. What are the odds?

The second picture is a recent one of Yin Yang in all of her majesty. She's not a big fan of people yet, but she'll get there.

Thanks for your hard work on the blog.

So Ying Yang is really an internet star. How awesome! Cute kitteh. And quite the story. Of all the gin joints......We are happy to hear you enjoy the Pet Thread. Thanks for sharing this neat story.

Bogie likes art, and finds his modernist "Binding of Isaac" to be cheerier and less scary than the one on the art thread. Actually, it's his favorite seat in the family room. I think he smells Rusty's scent on the spot.

Bogie has passed his first training class and will be moving on to less treat oriented sessions. The first week of class left him thinking he'd get treats every morning and it took days to correct this. I substituted a less delicious option. While he is still a bit puppish, he is much less jumpy than he was at first and is better socialized to people. He has not seen us as pups who can be rough housed in quite a while.

We walk about 3 miles a day, which he loves, and he can play a great game of fetch. I am still hesitant to let him run wild in the backyard as he has a regrettable tendency to chase other animals, especially deer. If it was only rabbits and squirrels, I'd be fine with it, but the local deer are far less frightened by people and dogs than they used to be. - CN

My goodness that is a colorful wall behind Bogie. I'm not sure how you can refuse that adorable pup T-R-E-A-T-S every morning. Thanks for sharing your experiences. It is difficult having a pup in an area full of wildlife.

Hi, MisHum. This is my friend, Willie...the sweetest pit bull in the
world. He lives across the back fence and considers me a member of his
pack. I got him a new collar recently and then spotted the doggy bling
on Jewells' Etsy site. Here's the result. -creeper

Willie is quite the doggeh. Then add the bling. Wow. Quite a handsome dude. Sounds like you have one sweet neighbor. Thanks for sharing today.

14 Thanks for the Pet Thread, Mis Hum. I find myself considering something I told myself I would never ever do again - get another dog. I have had so many dogs, and have worked with so many dogs, and had to put down so many dogs, that my heart closed up and said, "No more." Ha.

My son went on vacation and we kept one of his dogs, a little 6 lb thing with fur. Well, Rev fell in love. I didn't let myself even go there, but after she went back home, well.....

So now we are maybe kinda sorta thinking about considering getting a dog. Not a big dog, because reasons. Something way small. But there is nothing in the whole state of Wisconsin, unless there's something by Mis Hum that I've missed. Even Illinois come up empty except for pit bulls. No offense, but pit bulls are not going to work for us.

I've thought about going the breeder route, but even the breeders I would be interested in are in either Texas or Florida. Plus money. I don't know how or where to start. Suggestions?

19 Wait. Even better: if the pets are equivalent to the consumption habits of 6.6m people, how's about we kill 6.6m people instead? In America's urban centers of course; they contribute the most pollution. And won't be missed, where the pets would be.

I mean as long as we're doing a weird, pointless, eliminationist social experiment, we might as well accomplish *something* of value.

Preakness used to be a big effin' deal here in Central MD. Back in the day, it was a yuuuuge party in the infield. Used to be able to bring coolers of beer (Nattty Boh being the choice of locals). 42 I got Gary, the springer I lost to cancer in December, from a rescue group. The story was that he'd bitten their little girl. She wanted to put him down but the husband asked the group if they could find someone that wanted him. Rescue groups can't take a dog that's bitten someone. Fortunately, my husband saw it and convinced me to take him in. Still hurts that he's gone.

But she wrote a new letter to his new owner. She talked about how he'd been part fof their family but he'd willfully chosen to bite. It was a lot like the mentality of that puppy video. Dogs are not children. The dog had resouce guarding issues, which I fixed in one training session. And he didn't see or hear well so he startled easily. That was resolved with hitting him once with a cardboard tube. I never had any other issues with him.

The woman in the video should have still greeted that pup and been happy to see him. She could have chewed him out when she cleaned up. Maybe she can write a letter to his next owner, when she gives up on him.

Yes, Bogie is from a breeder. I applied for many, many small dogs and was turned down, and told " you can have a pitbull", not with the grandsons, and besides I just don't think I could control one who was planning to give chase. Appallingly, most of the little dogs I applied for are still listed, so I am assuming shelters are doing a bait and switch to get the pitties adopted.

The trainer I went to told me that when dogs hit late adolescence (10-18 mos) they are at high risk for being turned in or abandoned especially if they are large. People are much more willing to tolerate small dog antics.

At 64, I'm not sure I could handle a dog over 30lbs pulling me, and I decided I wanted one I could pick up and carry if I needed to. Bogie is full grown and under 15lbs.

65 One of the problems I have with smaller animals is that I have some minor tremor issues and have tripped over smaller dogs, which seems worse to me than being pulled.

Of course, my homies are all elderly now so it isn't an issue and Old Cat hasn't played the underfoot game in a while.

66 We never crated any dogs in my family. Of course I had dogs when there were no leash laws either. You'd open the door in the morning to let them out and they'd come back on their own or you called them back. The good old days.

81 My mom adopted thru her local shelter in Arizona. They had found two poodle mixes wandering together in the desert, presumably litter mates. The shelter people named them Bonnie and Clyde. Mom adopted Clyde. A few months later she was out walking Clyde when she saw a woman walking an identical dog. Turned out this woman had adopted Bonnie, and she lived 3 streets over.

This makes sense to me. Once, many years back, I acquired Spitz brothers, and I think they're shared goals made them a bit quarrelsome at times. My Kid 1 went with Zorro, the Keeshond, to visit the breeder for a one year eval, and he and is brother started in on each other almost instantly, while each left the female dogs and pups alone.

84 I ran into a woman with the cutest Westies ever. one was one, and the others were 12 or 13. The one year old had to be the most active dog I have ever seen. He would run into the water chasing a stick and then come back, and then grind himself into the sand. He was just saying, "you are going to have to give me the greatest bath ever tonight!"
She had three dogs all loose in an area that said all dogs had to be on leashes. I like to be clever, and I mentioned well she obeyed the law, they all had leashes. I took the chance as she could have mistaken me for a Karen or Ken.

Those were some pretty cool dogs. Two of them were quite old and they were just happy to be there. The 1 year old was probably the happiest dog I have ever seen. I hope that dog turns it off at some point. I am positive he will never grow fat. Combine being well behaved and never sitting still for a second. And running into the river as if he owned the place.

86 We stopped to talk to a neighbor with a springer. Found out he'd gotten a second one, a younger dog. He convinced a friend to get a springer. Like most people, the friend decided the springer was more dog than he could handle and he wound up with him. I've had four male springers now, all rescues and never a puppy. I still have to get Jake under control on a lead.

After my Holly passed away in October, I told myself I didn't want another dog because it was too heartbreaking when they die, but I changed my mine and adopted 2 cocker spaniel puppies in March. I had gone through all the rescues and shelters searching, but there was nothing but pit bulls so I decided to go the Facebook route.
I signed up for every FB cocker group in my area and beyond and it paid off. I have 2 adorable 5 mo old cocker puppies now.

If you don't have FB you can ask your son or daughter if you can have their password and share an account until you find what you want.

Unfortunately, FB is the best way to go if you are looking for a specific breed.

114 Hey, all,

Tough day yesterday. The power went out about 5 pm, and rather than put up with it, I decamped to a Baymont Inn a few miles away. Couldn't bring the feline thugs, but it isn't *super* hot this weekend, in fact last night was cool-ish, so they were not in danger of overheating. (Turned out the power came back on 20 minutes after I left. Figures.)

The Baymont, though, was *serious* about no pets. They catch you with one in the room you lose your $150 deposit, and you could get hit with a $100 cleaning fee. I suppose some dogs and cats could cause some damage . . . but they should do the same for children.

Hopefully, enough people from the Horde will contribute so that Apple can have the surgery and not be euthanized.
There is an organization called Hope 4 Paws that is based out of Los Angeles and they rescue abandoned animals. I watch their YouTube videos and follow them on FB. They deal with a lot of Foster homes and Vets that would probably take Apple in and do the surgery if it should come to that.
The head of the organization's name is Eldad.
Also, the Vet they use has saved many dogs leg's who's owners were told the leg had to be amputated.

I think that's true. Vegans don't have enough fat on 'em to have any flavor.

157 I won't bother commenting on the retards at Vox, but the Vegan chick that wanted the boyfriend to get rid of his gorgeous kitteh is a c*nt.

158 Just got back from walking my dog. She's now in her crate so she can't lick anything with her poopy mouth.

Lovely, sweet animal but can't leave the feces alone.

160 Wonderful petmorons this week. Our chihuahua hid from Mr. Bar the Door once when I was in the hospital. Among the garden tools. Theory: he thought I had been kidnapped.

161 Adorable pets! I use pine pellets for litter for half of my cats. The others just wouldn't adapt but if you start them from kittens you will probably have no problems.

I don't do it for bullshit "climate change" reasons, I did it for monetary and also ease of use for me. There are you-tube vids about it. I think it's a great system. 40 lb bags of pellets at Tractor Supply are around 5 bucks and last a hell of a lot longer than their conventional litter equivalent pound-for-pound. Wish I could have been on the thread earlier for more cat owners to see this.
