Daily Tech News May 11 2021

Top Story

Going all the way back to 1981 today with the first of many opening themes from Urusei Yatsura. The show ran for 196 episodes, with 12 OVA specials and 6 theatrical movies.

Rumiko Takahashi has always been great at starting stories, but only once managed to finish one.

Tech News

  • Amazon destroyed 2 million counterfeit products in 2020. (Ars Technica)

The comments note that (a) it's likely that a lot of these weren't counterfeit, but merely undocumented products from smaller sellers - Amazon is infamous for simply taking and destroying sellers' entire stock without explanation or recourse, and (b) the site is awash with obviously fake products.

Ars Technica is a left-leaning site that agrees with Amazon's politics (though it wasn't always thus) so this is not political animus speaking, but bitter experience.

  • You're sciencing it wrong!

Researchers at MIT are horrified to find that mask mandate skeptics are doing rigorous research and not blaming everything on white supremacy.

I am not making this up.

You can read the full paper for yourself. (Arxiv.org)

It reads like a bad parody of woke "science", but it's real.

  • Supermicro put two of Intel's new Ice Lake Xeons on a standard ATX motherboard. (AnandTech)

Due to space constraints - these are huge chips, and there's two of them - it only supports four of the eight memory channels on each CPU, and only one module per channel, though that's still enough for 1TB of RAM, or even 2TB if you can find the high-capacity modules necessary.

I think the only reason this exists is that you need two Intel server CPUs to compete with one from AMD; it makes no sense otherwise.

  • The DHS is spying on you for your own good. (NBC News)

You will learn to love Big Brother, you ungrateful little bastards.

  • Petrol supplies - what you folks call "gas" even though it's a liquid - may resume in the eastern US states by the end of the week. (ZDNet)

The FBI and the perpetrators have both confirmed this was caused by a Russian hacking group, supposedly not at all under the thumb of the Russian government.

Pull the other one, it's got little Brooklyn Bridges on.

  • It's not a labour shortage, it's just that the country is run by retards. (Washington Post)

When you subsidise bad behaviour, you get more of it.

25 Gotta have me some Lum, especially if that baka Ataru never seems to want her. Although, I have to sadly say I never really got into the show's humor enough to finish the long journey and it always make me feel somewhat ashamed of not enjoying such a pinnacle piece of anime.

Still, I did not close the door on the works of Rumiko Takahasi and have gone on to enjoy the rest of her creations like Maison Ikkoku, InuYasha, and currently enjoying Ranma 1/2.

Nevertheless, I never close door fully on Lum and her alien crew for my heart is always open to the wonder of the era, plus I like the concept of the alien girl chasing the jerk protagonist see my love for DearS.

It's bizarre to read Twitter now. There is essentially no dissent. I'm assuming bans and removal of posts.

An example is the all-gay Navy helicopter crew thread:

You will find a couple of "so what?" in the mix here and there, but there is an almost complete lack of debate and an overwhelming "yay, that's awesome!" feel to the extremely flaming homosexual photograph at the top.

61 Ah those obnoxious aliens...

Steve Bennett was an animator for Urusei Yatsura and one of his stories scared me at how frightening otakus could be. This series started before anime was anything but a niche fandom cloistered on US colleges where fan-sub tapes or just straight Japanese versions were passed around. To say you were a fan of Japanimation at cons got you weird looks from the other fan groups.

But back to the story, he was telling us the studio got a fan letter from someone in California. Since Steve is half-American guess they figured he could give them a bit of an American perspective. Turns out this American fan of UY wanted to marry Lum...

Swear I heard that bird sound effect at that point to note how totally awkward that fan letter was. Stay grounded folks. Nyah.

There are very few actual scientists coming out of the universities and more and more activists and grifters.

One of the first tells that this entire thing was bullshit was the absurd model that predicted 81pct of the US would be infected and that 2.5 million Americans would die in a year.

This isn't 1918 and unless they somehow knew the virus was a bioweapon, which it wasn't and which they didn't know, the numbers are patently absurd, ahistorical with respect to other novel virus outbreaks and obviously intended to cause panic and achieve a result.

Which sadly it did even though it has been completly discredited.

The subject matter can become more complex, but if it involves anything other than 7th grade basics it is no longer science.

With what do they propose replacing it? I am going to go out a limb and say that the answer is "nothing." This is because classification, categorization and hierarchy are non-woke. We can't replace one categorization system with another and must do away with it altogether.

On the other hand, they might realize that's a little bit extreme for mainstream agitation (although it is a cornerstone of their belief) and propose pivoting to categorization by social groupings reflecting the heat of the moment.

184 The Cars movie franchise encapsulates science today. In the first movie and beginning of the 3rd (pretend the second doesn't exist) everyone dreams of being on the Dinoco team. The team all wears light blue paint. It is what defines the team. When Lightng dreams of being on the team, he changes from red to light blue. Cal takes on the light blue when he joins the team. But in the 3rd movie, Cruz wants to be a grrrrl racer because grrrrls are just as good, and she tried really hard, therefore deserves a shot. At the end she gets her shot and beats all of the boys because she is a super powerful grrrl. She gets on the Dinoco team. Then not only forces Dinoco to allow her to remain yellow, but makes them change the logo and their signature light blue color. I have earned my position, now change everything about your organization to suit me. Meanwhile, lightning takes on the dark blue paint scheme to honor Doc's legacy.

193 Pixy sez, and I quote in partial

I am not making this up.

Just the other day, I had to make the same disclaimer.

It's the infamous Dave Barry quote. Now, I haven't read DB's Year In Review for 3-4 years, due to his TDS affliction, but still

It is worth remarking on. We have entered the Twilight Zone -- Don't attempt to adjust the horizontal and vertical, though this admonishment will resemble gibberish to the last 3-4 decades of cohorts.

Which isekai world would you want to live in?

1. Konosuba, Overlord, Wise Man's Grandchild, Log Horizon, Isekai Cheat Magician, Tanya the Evil. Or something else?
Posted by: Anna Puma

Of those, probably Log Horizon.

But I'd prefer Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear or 300 Years a Slime.
