Unexpectedly, The Unemployment Rate Spikes Upwards as the Economy Fails To Produce the Million Jobs That "Experts" Predicted, and Instead Produces Only a Catastrophe of 266,000

Maybe this has something to do with people being paid not to work, and now deciding they'd rather keep just sitting at home, not paying rent, and collecting their stimmy checks.

And the pseudoright's embrace of that situation -- shrieking that anyone who said the economy had to be kept open was a brain-dead MAGA Zombie and a Grandma Killer -- is going to end up plunging the US into a depression, and harming the candidate they worked so hard to (fake) elect, Joe Biden.

The U.S. economy added just 266,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate ticked up to 6.1 percent, the Labor Department said in its monthly labor assessment Friday, smashing expectations.

This was far below expectations. Analysts surveyed by Econoday had predicted Friday’s report would show between 755,000 and 1.25 million workers added to payrolls in April. The median forecast was for 938,000 and an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent.

The disappointing number for April could be a sign that hiring is being held back by enhanced unemployment benefits and schools that have not reopened full time, requiring some parents to stay home to take care of children. Many businesses say that they cannot hire enough workers to fill positions because of the government’s enhanced unemployment benefits program.

The economy has outperformed expectations on many metrics this year as vaccinations have boosted business and consumer confidence and restrictions on businesses have been lifted. Friday’s employment numbers represent a rare miss.

People like Philip Klein and the various liberal corporate cvcks at National Review are now bemoaning the fact that, after having been enrolled, mostly against their will, in a federal welfare program for 18 months, people have gotten used to being "institutionalized" on welfare (and to a kind of at-home prison system) and now resist returning back to the world.

Well, the idea that you can't give people a taste of welfare or socialism, lest they decide they like sloth more than labor, is a very old conservative notion.

Which the "True Conservatives" who are against making America great again quickly abandoned.

Weird how they so readily abandon longstanding conservative doctrine whenever their leftwing Twitter budz demand that they do.

Also weird how they abandon any semblance of even a conservative inclination if it helps them Get Trump and Teach His Base a Lesson.

You did this, NeverTrump.

And your decrepit rapist savior Joe Biden is going to preside over an economic collapse.

What did you think was going to happen, Genius Brigade?

Or did you not think past "My Twitter pals will emotionally validate me for my covid panic spreading" and "This will really hurt Trump"?

Take a bow. Take another bow, I mean -- let's celebrate all the many successes you've scored the last five years.

Update: In addition to wet-squib job creation, you can also expect... massive inflation.

32 The second biggest jobs miss in history is the canary in the coal mine. It's not just that the government is paying people not to work. The entire situation is a mirage. There is nothing to underpin many of the numbers that have been pumped up by government spending and Fed manipulation. At some point the music stops... Inflation is not going to be transitory and we've pushed demand forward with all the handouts. Price indexes are up across the board, and there are already signs of issues with liquidity. When you build the economy on a faulty foundation, it crumbles at the first earthquake. Look for a really big scorched earth push by Fraud and Friends, because that's the only way this artificial economy will keep rolling.

All those people who left the cities over the past year aren't coming back anytime soon. Add in that higher gas prices will make people more resistant to going back into the office, and rising energy prices will make those offices more expensive, and you've got a commercial real estate market that is about to go down harder than your moms during Fleet Week. Yup. They fucked up by letting a little bit of truth out. You can rest assured they won't be making that same mistake next economic quarter. The reports will show that our economy is booming. Workers are happy and smiling and all will be well once more. There will be no inflation because they'll change those metrics again. UE will suddenly plummet thanks to their efforts.

As a retired Fed, I have the option of moving my thrift plan money into the G fund, which is government securities, and guaranteed not to lose money. That's not the same as guaranteed to keep up with inflation, but it's better than lots of the other options. The trick is to move it into that fund right before the market crashes.

What's that? You don't have access to such plan? Sucks to be you, peasants.

199 I don't think "collapse" is likely. It's much more likely to be what we're seeing, and what we saw under the obamanation - malaise. A blanket of pernicious idiotic policies draped across what otherwise would be a truly vibrant economy. Just how vibrant was shown, in dramatic fashion, under the most recent president.

Presidents don't "run" the economy, they don't "create jobs". But how dramatically policies can suppress, or unleash, the natural prosperity that always seems to be just waiting to burst out in the US has never been more clear.

Inflation and monetary issues remain a bit of a puzzle. But they've been that way since 2008, when (as in March 2020, with epidemiology) the book was thrown away and basically those in charge said "hell, let's try this and see what happens!". Monetary base has ballooned in historic fashion. Much of that currently sucked up by record personal savings. We've been off my monetary policy map going on 12 years, so I have no idea.

I partially agree. But you have an equity market that is way over valued, and when people start to see that futures earnings are uncertain, that will change. Then once you get that correction (I am thinking a year end S and P ~ 4,000 or lower) you will get inflation starting to kick in and then probably stagnation. You simply can't pump government money into the economy, attack productive people by raising taxes, increase the welfare state and expect anything resembling a healthy economy.

324 I would really like a thread about this so that people who lived through it can give their experience and what they learned. I'm leaning towards land, but that's a very long term investment that can't easily be liquidated. I also think the market will hit at least 50K before they can't keep the plates spinning any longer, so I figure I might as well make money in that market, too.
==
the commercial real estate market is probably well and truly boned. A lot of companies are realizing they don't need a big down town foot print and people can work remotely. Going to be a soft market for a while. Farm land, ala Bill Gates, you better be really really rich, because its spendy, and then you gotta have it working to pay the taxes. Residential real estate - buy housing property in the south. Probably a good investment. THe cost of new building and the logistics of new building is getting higher and its going to pump the value of existing housing stocks. But, you gotta manage that stuff while you own it.

Find property out west on which you can prospect gold. Live there, gun up, get some cows, and build some green houses. It sounds like I'm joking . . .

This is in vol. 17 of "Things That Leftists Fail to Grasp," viz., that economic growth requires predictability. If you can't predict what the government or economy will do in the near future with some degree of confidence, what do you do? Nothing. You hunker down, and wait and see what happens. It's the Magic Negro's economy limped along so badly. Who knew what a-hole would do next? Mandates kicked in at 50 employees. Maybe tomorrow they'll kick in at 20.

We're going to have the same problem now with Presidentish Biden.

The 4Runner owners were told, no you just have to shell out a few grand every 4 years because our profit margin isn't as good with you.

Before you tell me with certainty that we're going to have all this inflation, first explain to me why you were wrong in predicting inflation when Helicopter Ben was throwing money around. And if your answer is "food prices," then you need to explain why inflation was confined to food prices.

More goods, less supply, massive inflation. More govt regulation affecting production, more inflation because less goods are produced. Raise minimum wage, less goods produced. Increase energy prices, less goods produced, more inflation.

In 2010, going from memory, we were about 70 percent debt to GDP ratio, we are now well over 100 which means that ZIRP effectively adds fuel on the fire as is increasing Govt spending.

It's all been done before and expecting different results is what gets people into trouble. The educated are generally the worst in believing this.

demand ramped back up faster than supply in the third quarter, driving a spike in prices

throughout the 3rd quarter, all the talk was about steel making capacity coming back on line in the first half of 2021. that talk ended right after the election. why start up your steel mill when you face an onerous regulatory burden?

so, there's not enough supply to meet the demand.
