When I Was Born, They Looked At Me And Said What A Good ONT, What A Smart ONT, What A Strong ONT

Gosh, I hope I don't get the ONTs backwards and do Friday's stuff today. That would be bad.

54.jpg

Signs The World Is Back To Normal

Britain and France are fighting again

OK, it's only over fish, but at least things are getting back to normal. Baby steps.

France and England.jpg

Of course, here's the headline you never thought you'd see:

French Retreat.jpg

“French Retreat”. Who would have dreamed the day would come when we would see those two words together?

This Baffles Me

OK, so there's this company that makes a vest for motorcycle riding. Klim Ai-1 Airbag Vest From the product description:

Replacing the physical pull-cord between vest and bike is an "intelligent" control unit designed in collaboration with In&Motion. You'll benefit from the three years of R&D, over twenty-million on-road kilometers of testing and 700+ real-world deployments that Klim and In&Motion analyzed to develop this technology.

At crash detection, the Ai-1 Airbag Vest reaches full inflation in 60 milliseconds (or less). The inflated vest protects and supports the neck, spine, thorax and abdomen. Then the vest slowly, over a course of minutes, releases pressure from its highest limit to protect the rider from secondary impacts. At a reduced pressure, the vest stays inflated to brace the crashed rider until emergency services arrive or until the rider gets up, brushes off and decides to ride on. Inflation cartridges can be swapped on the roadside easily in a matter of minutes.

OK, that sounds pretty cool. You buy the vest for $400, then you pay a $12/month fee for the vest to be active – to inflate if you get in a crash. Or you can pay a one time lifetime activation fee. You can even suspend the service if you aren't riding for a while, like during wintertime, and start it back on when you do get back out in the wind. I see nothing controversial or unusual about such an arrangement, it's basically the same way a lot of stuff – internet, phone service, satellite radio- works.

But see, that's why I'm an idiot. The left is furious, I mean furious, that a company dares to charge for its product when that product is “safety”. Here are the morons at Vice:

Car companies are increasingly seeing dollar signs at the prospect of paywalling features that need to be unlocked via a software update. It is so easy for me to imagine automakers paywalling airbags just like this motorcycle vest does if it wasn't federal law they must provide them. So think of the paywalled motorcycle airbag vest as just another glimpse into how much worse our late capitalism horror show would be without previous generations of lawmakers on both sides of the political spectrum understanding the importance of regulation.

Silly me, with my quaint old fashioned idea that if you want something you should pay for it. That's so silly. Who knew that the world would be perfect if everything was free? These fucking Marxists yammering on about “late-stage capitalism horror show” can munch my sweaty balls. 100 years ago something like 80% of the world lived in extreme poverty. Today it's <10%. You know why? Free market economics, that's why. There hasn't been a state run along Marxist lines that has produced anything but misery in the entire history of the world. That's your “real socialism” right there.

War!

Here's a first for me, an AlJazeera link. I say that, but at this point they're probably more reliable than western news outfits.

Tiny ethnic group fears extinction as Tigray war enters 6th month

They're squeezed between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and since those two countries are fighting, they're right in the middle of it. And just in case you were wondering:

Where The Wars Are

wars.jpg
ETA Somehow I lost the key to the map. Well, the redder the country, the higher the number of casualties over the past few years.

Speaking Of War...

I want one of these

So if anyone is looking for a gift to send my way, the Pool Punisher looks like it would be a blast.

Double King

The story is pretty straightformard, about the lust for power, but what I liked most about this short was the animation. Check it out.

Tolerance

The left screams about tolerance all the time, but they don't want tolerance. Tolerance isn't enough for them. Their absurdities have been tolerated for years. No, what they want is approval, and eventually, active participation. We're about ¾ of the way down the road from “Accept gay people” to “You have to suck a dick in front of us to access public services”. This article talks about the same phenomenon from a Christian perspective:

Christians, there’s a reason you keep having the same conversation with the culture

Man: I want to do "x."

Christian: You are free to do it.
Man: But you think "x" is wrong.
Christian: Yes.
Man: Because you want to control me and tell me how to live?
Christian: No. You are free to do what you want.
Man: But you think "x" is wrong.
Christian: Yes. Because God says "x" is harmful and I don't want that for you. I desire your ultimate good.
Man: But I want to do "x."
Christian: And you are free to do it.

Man: But I want you to say that "x" is good.
Christian: I cannot say that.
Man: Why do you hate me?

Even if you're not a Christian, you'll recognize the pathology instantly.

Speaking of Christians, have any of you been watching The Chosen? It's a crowd-funded TV series that's available for free on its own app. You can cast it to your TV using Chromecast, Firestick, Roku or any one of a number of other devices. They are filming the 3rd season right now, so far they've released season one and the first three episodes of season two. It's the story of Christ's ministry, and all I can say is that it is excellent. Jonathan Roumie's portrayal of Jesus may be the best yet filmed. Jesus feels “real” in a way that most on screen portrayals of him don't. I highly recommend watching it.

News Flash!

Despite everything, most older millennials are content with how their lives turned out

Gee, you mean as you approach your 40s you often times grow out of the little shit that you used to be? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you.

18 I'm glad people are watching and enjoying The Chosen. I have admittedly only seen the woman at the well scene when it was played at church.

But I must fall into some narrow band of literalist OCD freak because I really can't enjoy film treatment of Biblical stories that add any dialogue not present in the text. It invariably alters something, and that invariably ruins my experience of it.

I can really go on a stemwinder about the Passion "translation" if anyone is bored enough.

Then you would love Hövding's inflatable bicycle helmet that is worn as a gator, and as it detects an unexpected and violent dismount will inflate to protect the neck and head from injury.

But people can't have it in the former United States because the bureaucracy doesn't know how to classify it, and stupid bicycle-helmet laws won't recognize it as a helmet so a device that is far superior in its role to protect the head and neck of a crashing bicyclist - we can't have it.

44 Liberals believe that reality is a shared social construct.

So, if you believe the Biden-economy is bad, it will be bad. If you believe cutting your dick off is bad, then trannies can't be complete women. And so on.
And this is why we can't live in peace with there. No surrender on policy will be enough because they want, no need, no DEMAND that you think the way they want as well.

If I need either, I don't want to have to call the support line to figure out why the subscription didn't activate it. There are enough manufacturers around that will just sell you the thing that I don't have to bother with Klim, if they're choosing to go that route.

I feel your pain. Dittos with "translations" of the Bible. e.g. The NIV removes Sarah from the Hall of Faith.
My favorite: the KJV correctly translates the original language to say "pisseth against the wall", but every translation since then are offended at God's language and thus change it to something like "males".

This gratuitous change to clean-up God's language leaves out the details that male toddlers, the infirm, the effeminate, the eunuch can't or won't "make water" against the water so the charge to kill all those who "pisseth against the wall" really is about neutralizing any retaliation by war capable men.

They are not that mystical. Worked with them a couple years. People did some stupid things (tossing them on tables, dropping boxes of the things) never saw one cook off. Of course, they had to be stored in a metal, sealed and closed container. I always thought it was hilarious the difference between how people handle them and how they had to be stored.

86 OK, got stuck on the second item

The world should be furious about that business model. It is warped -- why?

What has happened since Bill Clinton started handing all our IP over to the ch---s, is that the old model of innovation stopped working so well. It used to be that you innovated and sold your product. NOW, there is no money in that because innovators have no IP protection and Toby Wong ("...fucking Charlie Chan") will steal your IP, manufacture in China, sell on Amazon.....

So the successful companies need add revenue and subscription services to survive. Or mineral wealth. Or gov. contracts. And the finance guys know this...

(OK, getting worked up. enough said.)

103 WD, had that exact conversation with my girlfriend regarding homosexuality.

She contended it is not a sin. So I read to her Romans 1: 24-32, which clearly identifies in verse 27 the specificity of homosexuality as sinful and unnatural. She contended for a while that it was interpretation or what have you. Of course I countered this with umpteen translations that all identified the same thing, just in different diction.

Finally she acquiesced and said "I know what it says, but I just don't think that God would think that." So I asked her to read verse 25 to me, which, in the NLT says "Instead of believing what they knew was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies". She didn't particularly care for that.

She contended we shouldn't say it's a sin, that they love each other and that should be celebrated. So I told her to read verse 32, which in the NLT says "They are fully aware of God's death penalty for those who do these things, yet they go right ahead and do them anyway. And, worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too."

She really didn't like that. But at least our conversation on that topic was over.

No vaccine is 100% effective, even when we want them to be. They work b/c we get 99% of people to take them, and if a singular person ever catches a virus, there's just not enough viral load to pass it around to anyone who may not have full protection from shots b/c only one person has it at a time, not one million. So, nothing breaks out.

The surrendering of the godhead to God is the act of submission of your moral judgement to God.

The hedonistic epoch we live in demands no one stand judgement, what the lads and lasses do not understand is in the end when God judges you He sees through your eyes into your deeds with ruthless honesty.

211 I know this place for the most part hates Quentin Tarantino, but I don't. And I was just watching an interview with him where in it he talked about how deeply personal some of his characters and stories are. Like how certain close friends would look and say "omg you went *there*?"

Anyway he said something interesting. He said his rule about writing movies that he followed strictly was "tell the truth". And I do find there is an honesty to his movies, and that his perspective tends to lean conservative (discounting of course the obsessions with race vengeance and his lectures about cops). I mean he wrote a four hour kung fu movie about a woman avenging (and eventually saving) her unborn baby.

And there's one very old interview where he said his belief on guns was if you're on my property and I think you're dangerous and you won't leave, you're going to get fucking shot.

This is all my usual long-winded and roundabout way of saying that truth exists, that God created it, and that much like the rhythm, it IS gonna get you.

What happens if they go out of business? What if they get hacked? How does the service get turned off? Is there an indication on your vest that your vest is now "off"? To wit, I note that almost everything we face is turning us further from the truth. Even if it means distancing from what they said/did yesterday - if it moves the truth further away from humanity's grasp, it is considered a necessary public good.

This is the rule I see underlying 100% of what we face.

An inflatable safety vest is not insurance; it's just a piece of personal protective equipment. With health insurance, you pay a monthly fee in order to get coverage for unexpected health emergencies that could cost tens of thousands of dollars to treat.

The vest works once, and it's earned its buy-in. Same as a life jacket for boating, or a hard hat on a job site.

I've been voting against this my entire adult life that I've lived here. Never win. Also I guess it's my damned fault for having roots here and not abandoning family who needs us.

Because you are paying for a service. Somebody watches a big board, and takes note when a light comes on. Sure, most of it's done by software now, but there has to be at least one operator to call the fire department if the software verifies an alarm.

The fire alarm is a system set up in a fixed location with a communication system that is has been tested against (most likely land line and cellular) and a reliable power supply.

The vest will be moved to random places around the country, and only because of the subscription, requires a battery and some means of communication. The subscription alone makes it subject to hackers, billing mistakes, etc.

Looking at the specs and the alleged features, we are talking classic IoT device. The unit coordinates with a mobile phone and the mobile phone acts as a relay to their servers which probably records all kinds of behavior data (very likely GPS, speed and current WX conditions) - this is likely the legal aspect plus they make coin selling your data (maybe even to the gestapo).

The cost is really simple. Programmers and data scientists are expensive people and just wait until you get your monthly AWS cloud services bill. You will be looking for ways to scare up some income.

Its also moved to beds. Sleep Number has a line that requires continual internet connection. I read the EULA and it is downright terrifying. Apparently the bed can hear you snore and will adjust the air pressure to your weight and it can monitor your heart rate. That means it has a microphone, heat, ECG and weight monitors built in, and it sends this to SleepNumber. They will invalidate the subscription if the mattress is used in a B&B. From reports of people using the bed, the bed is constantly changing pressure in the zones. The EULA also reads that if one disconnects it from the internet or attempts to determine what is being sent, Sleep Number will deflate and brick your mattress.

389 Furthermore, SleepNumber is able to quite literally follow whatever activities take place in that bed. If your spouse brings someone over who differs enough in weight, Sleep Number will know, and be able to monitor heart rate, activity, heat, position and sound.

What fascinates me:

Subscription vs microtransactions in the game field. Now WoW has been the only game to have long term success (that I can think of) with a subscription model. Microtransactions are a cash cow however, even when most of them are explicitly not beneficial to play. It seems counterintuitive, but I guess the consent angle of it makes people have a lower threshold for BS.

Its funny reading the marketing spin on these features: Automatically adjust the bed if your partner begins to snore. You can use your voice to have it raise or lower a segment. By monitoring your heart rate the bed will adjust to maximize your deep sleep. Certain models will notice hot spots and adjust the flow of air to cool those areas that are warm...

As far as I know, it was still used from time to time to test if equipment was ready for shuttle data formats. Hopefully they've retired that thing by now.

All of their non-smart mattresses they will just ship to you and you can assemble them. The smart mattresses can only be installed by a qualified technician who will make sure that the bed connects to your home's WiFi.

I have no idea how tight they are about missing a few days. I expect if the outage was a week or so and they started to do things as punishment, Consumer Reports would have a whole section dedicated to bitching about it.

It's pretty obvious by the turning away from things made "woke" by much of the population that there is no overwhelming popular demand for what the Opposition wants. And why exactly do the zillionaires who can have anything they want already wish to chance destroying the system for a little more security in their power? I got into VAXes (VAXen, for the purist) because that's what we had at work. I also thought the built in clustering in VMS was pretty cool. Unless the roof drains backed up and water starting pouring into the data center right on top of a cluster. Then the clustering features didn't help much.

529 what the heck? It says 2:01AM, but Ace is always on Eastern Time.

AFAIK, the blog's time stamp has been on Central Time since we returned to this, the best of all possible worlds format, about two weeks ago.

This is odd. The main page is right, so the ONT is stamped 9:59, but the first comment is 8:59. Not sure if that was always the case since I only ever paid attention to the main page.

541 VDH did a piece on 10 ways the US is being "Sovietized"
I think he left out a few big ones.

11. Warped criminal justice system where political crimes are punished more severely than criminal acts. So causing $10 in damage to the party will send you to the gulag, but stealing $1,000 for personal gain is a slap on the wrist.

12. NKV (FBI) has total disregard for rule of law, and breaks the same laws they charge others with.

13. Intimidation tactics of early morning raids, being searched and held without contact, and long search for potential violations to pressure people into confessing just to end the process.

14 Criminalizing ideas and thoughts that are supported by science, but go against the state's favored conclusions. This was a big deal when scientists went against Lysenkoism with Ag experts terrified to do anything since if they followed the state plan, people would die, but if they resisted they would go to the camps.

.. I could go on. His piece is good but it just scratches the surface.

As I too often say to Mrs. KvC the moment someone appears on screen firing something at full automatic, "Full auto does not compensate for being unable to hit shit."

No.

I suspect that Ace is quite proficient at field gutting and cleaning, and only wants the filet mignon (which is a very small portion of a standard hobo).
