Saturday Afternoon Checkers (And Any Other Games You Like) Thread

checkers22.jpg

Apparently there is a large and vibrant checkers-playing world out there that is independent of kids playing each other or grandpa having some fun with the grand-kids.

Most games that aren't obviously random have strategies that will maximize one's chances to win, and I assume that checkers is no different. So it shouldn't surprise me that they have tournaments! Hell, Man competes at pretty much everything...it's part of what makes us human.

***

checkers33.jpg

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, politicians used to have to try to court the voters by connecting with them on a personal level...with a cute dog, or the claim that their wives wore "good Republican cloth coats."

***

checkers44.jpg

Is that still legal in hockey? The recent imbroglio between the Rangers and the Capitols was embarrassing on e very level. Maybe it's time for professional sports to complete the transition to a corporate sideshow used as advertising opportunities and completely insulated from the regular fans.

22 qdpsteve, backgammon is my favorite game. The object is to get all your pieces off the board by rolling dice. More strategy than one would think. I like playing for a dollar a point.

32 Hey everybody.

I'm kind of interested in learning to play backgammon. What's the object of the game?
It's been a while since I've played, but basically the object is to move your discs from the opposite side of the board, to your side of the board, and then off the board before your opponent does the same. Points are then tallied, though i don't remember how, exactly. A "doubling cube" can be used to make things more interesting in terms of the final score, as you are wagering that you will come out ahead.
It's kind of a fun game with some subtle strategies involved.

Backgammon originated in the Royal Navy in the 1700s as the game Acey-Ducey.

It helped provide entertainment on long voyages at sea, but was primarily was used to determine who was pivot man at that night's gangbang in the chain locker...

47 Pinochle is a fun card game. It uses its own specialized set of cards based on a standard deck: 10, J, Q, K, A. There's a bidding system and complicated set of rules for how to create "winning" variations of the cards. Used to play it all the time with my family.

She looked kind of cute, actually. I think it was because the guy in front of me on the other side of the U-scans got actual cigarettes and so she had to open up the case. When I smoked, I never got them at the grocery store. Even then, it was a gigantic pain in the ass. Plus, they were usually cheaper at Speedway or Thorntons.

Regardless, since I am a cracker, there was obviously no racism present in her delay.

As we were packing up I told him, "B'Gal would've been the first one to tell me, "Go. Play." He said, "Yup, she would." Especially since her younger son toured the world with Pat Travers playing bass.

Yes and No. Yes you fight with battalion size units but you need to build your core group while improving your equipment within the confines of earned "prestige". Knowing that you need to plan your battles to preserve your core as much as possible but also winning each scenario quickly enough so you don't take the losers bracket. The game is from Slithering/Matrix games.

I'd presume there's some taxes laid onto pipe tobacco, but good burley blends (the old-style stuff you used to be able to find at the corner drugstore) can still be had for less than $3 an ounce. Since it takes me a while to go through even 1 ounce, pipe smoking is still pretty affordable. And I already had a slew of pipes from my time with it back in the '80s, so not much outlay required.

Most cats are like that -- they feel nervous in a new location, and then a strange cat too? Noooo!

The late Marie-Antoinette had no trouble with such encounters, though. She presumed that, as Queen of All Cats, her subjects (including the humans) would adore her. She generally was right. And when I introduced the big black Wolf cat to the incumbent cat Chekov, they sniffed each other warily, but within an hour were sitting in the window together, watching birds.

I could only play Hearts of Iron III with the basic game, note of the extensions. Due to Steam not releasing the extensions for iMac when I became interested.

It was an Operational game with a strategic back end. That was the good part. The stupid AI made playing very unfun, after a while. Too easy to win.

I did very well in HOI II, but again, the right moves and France could take over the world. Lots of unreality in that game. Probably why I did so well. Doctrine works.

128 I've been learning to paint 28mm minis and took a poke at trying to learn both Battletech and Warhammer 40,000. The big dogs of tabletop wargaming. It seems like it would be loads of fun if the rules could be condensed to 3-4 pages of standard rules and maybe 2 more pages of army-specific rules, but that's not what you get. You get a multi hundred page rule book full of tactically significant but eminently forgettable minutia, plus another ~100 page army specific rule book, plus a bunch of errata hidden away in Games Workshop's website and magazines. Oh, and if you're playing competitive you need at least a passing familiarity with your opponents' rule books too. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

The minis themselves look great though. It's just too bad the game designers take it all way too seriously.

175 I think Somebody Is Trying to Tell Me Something. This morning I drove out to a wheel-and-rim shop; I'm in the market for a new set of alloy wheels for the Buick. I'd emailed the guy, and their website gave the address. But I get there and find two different businesses, both closed despite the original shop saying they're open on Saturday.

I visited another one on the way back home. They were open, but don't impress me much. If they give me a good price, then maybe; but they are supposed to call me when they get a price from the manufacturer. I wonder if they will.

I still watch the 'Big One' on YTube. Both of those teams hated each other and both of them were great teams. Often representing the West in the SC. Your right about the back story (Claude Lemieux's criminal hit on Drapier a year prior). I wasn't a fan of either team but watching both of those teams playing each other was a must watch.

Both quit school to go out to work to help support their respective families. Mom did housekeeping, dad delivered ice and coal. Dad was drafted in 1942, they were married on Dad's birthday that year (dad was in uniform) and he was shipped overseas a few months later. Took part in the Southern invasion, wounded twice in action. I still have the two telegrams from the War Department informing my mom of dad's injuries. Mom was working in a defense factory at the time. Dad had the scars on his back for the rest of his life from the hot shrapnel from an exploding "bouncing Betty". Killed his buddy and put dad in a French hospital. I can't imagine what my mom went through when Western Union showed up with those telegrams. Two hard working blue collar people who loved their country. First generation Americans.

I suspect it was a surprise. Mom had been an RN for a number of years -- she was a career woman before it became fashionable. I think all the loud concerts I attended were in the Sports Arena. KISS, AC/DC, Ted Nugent. These were all in the 2000s, though, when (a) I had money, and (b) so many of my old favorites were touring again.

Alice Cooper was the exception. He tended toward smaller venues that he could build sets on. The Spreckels Theater downtown, for example. An old theater practically designed for Alice Cooper’s kind of show.

231 About backgammon ...

It is an ancient game, origins in Mesopotamia about 5000 years ago

As a war game, it is more realistic than chess imo because of the luck factor. Backgammon is all about adjusting to circumstances that may change drastically with a single roll of the dice.

Backgammon players have Elo ratings (named after the Hungarian physicist who developed the system) ranging from 0 to 2000. Beat a player better than you (i.e., with a higher Elo rating) and your Elo rating goes up. Lose to a player worse than you and it goes down. The top US players typically have Elo ratings in the mid 1700s.

There are excellent backgammon apps out there to use for practice and to learn the game. GNU Backgammon is free and multi platform, and it provides play by play post game analysis if you want it. Backgammon NJ (the app I have) is a neural network app that is ferociously good at the game, but it also knows how to dial back its skill level if you want to use it for training or practice.

NO!!! Never EVER spray WD-40 into a precision clockworks. Did I mention EVER?? It could cause more damage. Ask around to see if there is a clock repair shop that specializes in old antique clocks. I'm sure others have had clocks such as yours repaired. I was in a repair business for many years where people would bring an item in for repair that they tried to fix. In the end, it cost them twice as much as it would have if they would have not touched it. Leave the WD-40 for displacing moisture or loosening rusted bolts. It has no place being used with precision mechanisms. Including locks.

499 "Is that still legal in hockey?"

If you're talking about the following text, referring o the little skirmish between the Caps and Rangers, the answer us, obviously, yes...in the professional leagues. In the amateur leagues, a fighting penalty is a major (5 min shorthanded, with no limit on goals against), expulsion from the game, and an automatic 2 game suspension, with review and up to permanent suspension - which is why most minor fisticuffs involving no blood will be called as a 2 min minor roughing penalty.

If you're referring to your picture, which is a Hurricane vs Islanders thing, controlling the opponents stick with your stick is legal. However, if the 'cane player was to pull the stick back, it could be called a penalty: "hooking".

Hockey is a rough game, and rules are necessary, but complaining about an occasional punch-up is, IMNSHO, of a piece with whines about "toxic masculinity" and yet another step toward the pussification of the American male.
