The Morning Report - 5/6/21 [J.J. Sefton]

Good morning kids. Thursday and even as things are getting darker all around us, from the intentional erasure of our borders, our freedoms, the rule of a just and stable law, our cultural heritage and our sanity, there is pushback. Yes, from some national political leaders (far too few unfortunately), but primarily and most crucially from ordinary citizens. Citizens of a nation that as of last January ceased to exist, who are de facto internal exiles and what amounts to political prisoners of a hostile regime that grows more totalitarian by the day both as the reality that what they are promoting and doing come crashing down on their heads and that more and more people are rejecting the Kool Aid; either from the end of a syringe or over the airwaves. Somehow, some way, we find ourselves in some sort of nightmare alternate reality. When even some intellectually honest diehard leftists recognize this, you know we all got off at the wrong stop.

What is it going to take to reverse course? In gathering up the links for this morning, I came across yet another essay where the author once again addressed the problem accurately yet offered no real solutions other than to say "organize," "stand up," "state your case." etc., and of course "vote." I commented:

Does the author not realize that the current junta consists of a nightmare regime that combines the worst elements of the Stasi controlling the government and Children of the Corn controlling media and the private sector? When they declare all political opposition illegal and tantamount to treason - any day now I assume - then all of this talk of political organization let alone openly challenging people who support this is the equivalent of charging naked into a volcano.

As I threw up my hands in frustration, I thought, well, maybe in a sense the only choice is to take the plunge.

Jonathan Koeppel, a Louisiana high school teacher that went viral last month after objecting to his school's gender theory curriculum, spoke with the Daily Caller about his experience protesting the radical lessons.
Koeppel spoke out against gender identity education during an April school board meeting. Koeppel criticized an application used in school by students called "Brain Pop" for teaching about gender identity and personal pronouns.
"Who gave permission to talk about this? There's two genders," said Koeppel during the meeting. "I'm not going to work in a district that's okay with that."

I imagine Mr. Koeppel is going to have a shit ton of pressure on him to recant and renounce what he said and apologize or else lose his job - or be forced to put out the mostly peaceful flames on the backs of his children if he doesn't. On a personal level, I had dinner last night with a few friends and the conversation eventually turned to who got their vaccines and when it was my turn, I meekly said not yet. When asked "well when are you getting it" instead of just coming out and declaring I won't, I stammered something out and managed to change the subject. Not exactly a profile in courage.

But that said, Mr. Koeppel, just like the parents in Virginia who took over the school board meeting may be isolated incidents but I am sure that they are not alone. Whether it's indoctrination, inoculation or incarceration for "insurrection" (spit), people are becoming scared, frustrated and angry. Are we voting our way out of this? More than likely not, given a whole host of reasons. Are we going to have to shoot our way out of this is the question. Perhaps not. But unlike me, it's going to take courage.

It's down to us. Each of us is going to have to be the Rosa Parks, the James Meredith, the Virgil Hilts, the black guy at the lunch counter who Democrat Klansmen refused to serve, even if it means getting spit upon, beaten up, thrown into "the cooler"...or worse. Let's hope it never ever gets to that but I've seen enough and know enough to understand that it's better to die on your feet than merely exist on our knees.

Gradually, then all at once is how we got here. And I guess that's the way we'll get out of this. One by one. Be the revolution. One person. Then another and another and before you know it you're a force to be reckoned with. Pollyanna-ish? Maybe. But if we're going to wait around for the other guy to stick his neck out, we're dead already. Once again, it's Winston Churchill with the pearl of wisdom:

No, I reckon he doesn't. There is a problem amongst a *lot* of the social and political commentariat, and it isn't even exactly ideological. You see the exact same disastrous failure along the entire commentary spectrum. It is perhaps more common on the Right, but they do not have a monopoly.

The problem is an utter failure to internalize and comprehend (or, to use a term I like but that requires contextual understanding, "to grok") totalitarianism. They simply do not understand that totalitarianism means the overturning and destruction of every single conceivable prior norm and standard in favor of new, controlled, top-down, socialist standards.

Oh, they get it intellectually. They know what happened in Germany and in the USSR and in Cambodia and in North Korea, ad naseum. But they don't grok it. They don't get it viscerally. They believe - all of them with this problem, regardless of political alignment - that it can't happen here.

I know many who wish they had a legit sombrero when out in the heat. Many have come up with skin cancer because they did not wear a legit hat. In the Civil War, the absurd French style Kepis provided no protection at all. The smart troops, like the "Black Hats" of the Iron Brigade had real protection. Cowboy hats from later years were designed for a reason. Only a dummy would live in that area and not protect themselves. I don't see how a sombrero is a cliche or stereotype. I see it as a smart person who knows what a hat is supposed to do.

Because it's a cultural or ethnic marker. Just like a "cowboy hat" or those conical hats they use in SE Asia or various other items of fashion and utility.

You're not at all wrong - the sombrero is a practical garment (or is it an accessory?) for dealing with the broiling sun when laboring outdoors. It's also highly regional (the southwest, northern Latin America) and ethnic (largely Mexican). Regional, cultural or ethnic markers and so can become shorthand - cliches or stereotypes. The underlying practicality or sensibility of the thing itself doesn't really enter into the equation.

The mayor works as a high school counselor of some sort, but is in reality a patronage worker for the state machine. Our very corrupt system in NJ still provides for the county government to employ lots of similar such workers, but they love to stick even more into school jobs or "elected" municipal positions. The mayor, lucky woman, is in both (so she will eventually collect two public pensions).

Anyway, this looks like a wrong-think discipline case. The officer will probably get her job back and everyone will have learned their lesson not to step out of line. The political machine will be happy.

I'm lucky from the standpoint that most all of my friends are like minded, so there's not a lot of guilt for my feelings about today's situation.

That being said, I'm not going out of my way to confront or get involved in things, but my area hasn't gone off the deep end.

I will say that I'm reasonably proud of my town as they recently stepped up and forced the blocking of 'sensitivity training' by a company that heavily pushed 'critical race theory' and the district backed down.

So long, Basecamp. It was nice to briefly know you. Not that it matters today, of course. But it will matter tomorrow. There is clearly no control within the company - or, perhaps more accurately, there has been a clear shift of control within the company. It won't continue to tolerate the woke, it is going to embrace it to the point of distraction. Quality is going to go out the window. New features will suck. Bugs aren't going to be fixed well. Updates will be frequent and inadequate.

I give it three releases, maybe four before the company folds. This isn't how you get quality. They may think that they're competing in the Woke Marketplace (and they are, to a point), but their product competes in a *real* marketplace. A marketplace with very little patience for poor quality. And poor quality *is* what's coming.

So don't worry about it. They'll be dead soon, and the locusts will detach from the corpse and fly off to infect someone else.

It was always a state that was not a state. It is a bit like Spain that way. France and the UK are true states, with a major city where the power lies. In Italy the power even today is spread out. Milan is the financial power, Rome the seat of government, and Florence the cultural center. Naples is their own thing, and as you say, they go their own way.

It is funny that a "country" that has been so much a part of Western Civilization hasn't been a country that long.

Yup.

Own it and have seen it twice. I'm kind of fascinating by movies that replicate the logic of dreams and Come and See is one of those. It's a pure nightmare that you can't wake up from. It's a savagely angry movie about the rape of Belorussia by the Nazis that's probably also talking about Stalinist Russia at the same time (Soviet war movies often did both), and anchored by one of the great child performances (that wasn't really a performance because the director was having guns fire inches above his head at times).

In short, family fun adventure.

Rick Steeves has proved himself to be a jagoff. But he has been around for many decades and there was a time he inspired a lot of independent travelers. He had a line about Italy I always loved. I also loved that some did not get it unless you explained it. And Italy has always been his favorite country.

When asked "well when are you getting it" instead of just coming out and declaring I won't, I stammered something out and managed to change the subject. Not exactly a profile in courage.

I've been asked this several times and to people who I felt any obligation at all to respond to, I've made it clear that it is my choice to pass on it. The reaction to that position has been disheartening, to say the least. I'm still rather incredulous at the level of societal pressure that has been brought to bear with respect to all things Covid. First the face diaper and the social distancing and now the vax. This phenomenon can only portend worse to come, IMO.

I am fully "vaccinated" only because I'm over 60 with chronic hypertension. If I had been younger and in good health, there is no way in hell I would have taken it. It is not FDA approved and the mRNA manipulation for viruses is experimental. Even the J&J version is not a true vaccine. I don't think the risk is high, but it is a significant enough risk that someone should be allowed to take into consideration.

As suggested above, the fact illegals who are being held in detention centers at the border are not being forcibly vaccinated speaks volumes. Even if it is the Left doesn't want to stop the flow of their preferred replacement population, it does show how politicized federal health authorities have become.

Here is the short synopsis of where I think things can go and make a difference. No surprise that Florida is leading the way.

A new federalism where states effectively declare federal regulation and the tech overlords to be null and void. DeSantis is moving a bill through Florida that makes it illegal for social media companies to ban Florida residents and companies for political viewpoints, with massive per day fines. Couple that with the fact that Florida showed states how to run a clean election, then you have ways for the red states to effectively execute the national divorce Ace talks about.

The irony is that CA lead the way in forcing companies to change policies to deal with the market of a single state (emission standards), and that blue states showed you can ignore federal law without consequence with drug legalization. Right now everyone who can move to Florida is moving here. Being known as the only free state in the country has that effect. Anyway, still thinking about it, but I'm seeing pushback on the cult nationwide that makes me think it is viable.

I am in a period of "discernment" myself. I know my historical family church has left me. The new pastor brought up Thornberg in the latest installment of wokeness. What kills me is this is a place i have been at least a nominal member of for over 30 years. What really freaks me out is families I know from the old days, continue there. I am looking at these sermons online and I can't believe what I am hearing.

I don't criticize you, by the way, since I was more or less ejected from my church for wrong-think (so I understand why you avoid the issue), but I miss it. Recently I was in Georgia (south of Savannah) for a week and it felt very liberating. I love my house and my town but, for the first time, I am really considering uprooting myself.

It's not "conflict", I am no stranger to that, it's paying for critical race theory BS and having kids indoctrinated with it that I detest. And as temples are financed by annual dues, I cannot just boycott the collection plate. Plus they found a new woke "prayer book". It's changing my surroundings, not ignoring them.

I have to close out and reopen the page.
Also, On Duck Duck Go and Safari, my phone (iPhone 11) continually tells me there is a problem loading the page... and then goes on tilt. No amount of re-booting helps. At first I thought it was Apple messing with the horde, but when Duck Duck Go did it.... not so sure. This happens(ed) pre- and post-resurrection. FYI. Thanks!

I have a friend who is very conservative and stays because they enjoy participating in a few of the social activities. The wife is part of the choir and the guy enjoys some of the Sunday religious lectures and Torah study. I don't participate in these.

There are virulent ads on the front page. Ace and Pixy know but they can't fix it. You have to race to click into the comments, which have no ads and work fine.

The new-tech site didn't have these problems; I was hoping it would be permanent for that reason.

I think that accurately describes what I am seeing too. I don't know many of the young people, even the ones I knew growing up mostly moved away. But you have these old, like 80 year olds who have only known the church. I don't think they leave because it is just so much a part of who they are and there is so much history. But i am seeing what is being pushed and it is flat out Leftist clap trap, brilliantly mixed in with traditional songs and Scripture readings. But there is no doubt in my mind, I can't advance there in any way. I won't go into with with a pure heart. I see the Leftism, and trust me, it is not hidden, but in your face. Very strange for the history of that church really. They got another one is all I can say.

"Changing your surroundings" is fine as a mind-formulation, and honestly in that sense I'm thinking of nothing more than "changing my surroundings" by a thousand miles or so, but the truth is I am considering it because I am tired of knowing I disagree with my neighbors on virtually everything of importance. A acquaintance of mine works for Murphy in a high level job, for example and she and I now avoid each other like the plague at parties. I can't go to church. My neighbors freak a little when I praise Trump, but I do it anyway. It's all very weird.

For myself, I will NEVER take the vaccine. They've done nothing but lie to us about everything, and I think Colorado is going to try and go full "vaccine passport" on us, and I'm at least as stubborn as Winston Churchill. They'll have to kill me before they get me to take it, and then it's kinda pointless.

Also, I am convinced at this point that I had it early on, in February of 2020, before everybody lost their damn minds. Therefore, I don't need the vaccine.

My sympathy and empathy extends more towards my children and their generation who are going to have to live in a socialist hellscape because my generation aren't willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to stop what is so clearly coming.

You by no means should divulge your personal standing, but ask yourself this - do you not think it likely there was someone in circumstances that could relate to yours who went to war against the Nazis? A christian martyr? A union soldier, an abolitionist, a patriot in the revolution? History stands on the graves of people who gave everything they had for what is right.
