The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“I pulled my .38 out of my right pocket and pointed it at the ground and told them if a weapon points at me again, I will shoot to eliminate the threat.” Joe Hall of Portland, OR

Quote II

At this point in our history, it’s become increasingly clear that the group posing the greatest threat to innocent Americans is our political class that has allowed so many of our neighborhoods, schools, and economic centers to erode – so that cops are left to constantly pick up the broken pieces. Kevin Nicholson

Quote III

“So we, including my family, are at a crossroads. We’re vaccinated and feeling safer about having a small wedding, but now we can’t stand or dance at our own wedding. It just seems a bit extreme to me.” Soon to be groom, Daniel Chazen

Quote IV

“There is always going to be something that you can have grievances about in a society that’s as complex as ours,” Gordon Pennycock

You want low to no bail for individuals who have been charged with felonies? Here is what you get.

Paschal was out of jail on bond after being charged in Galveston County with the ambush killing of his wife, Savannah Paschal, last October. He is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a weapon. Additionally, he is charged in Harris County with aggravated assault on a peace officer. His bonds totaled $550,000.

"We believe that system needs to be revamped," said Michael Kinchen, Savannah's father, as he stood next to his wife at the news conference. "All I can say is that this has been a nightmare for our family."

The Kinchens are now raising the couple's two young children.

Savannah, 30, was fatally shot in the couple's home in La Marque last year on Oct. 21 while their children were at school. Police said Paschal ran off, but Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies were able to track him down to a Walmart parking lot in north Harris County that night. A deputy shot Paschal because he would not drop his gun as they tried to arrest him, said investigators.

In the weeks that followed, Paschal was hospitalized, recovered and made bond.

It's not easy becoming a doctor. Virtual schooling isn't cutting it.

Last year, my first in medical school at Columbia University, I used a bone saw to slice through the top half of a cadaver’s skull, revealing a gray brain lined with purple blood vessels. This was Clinical Gross Anatomy, the first-year course that has fascinated or devastated (or both) every medical student. You never forget the day you open the skull.

Cutting into the brain, unlike the muscles of a forearm or the arteries running down a thigh, feels personal. As a cloud of aerosolized bone dust particles darkened overhead, reinforced by the thickening smell of singed bone, I wondered how much of my donor’s body I was inhaling. How much of that dust would be engulfed by the immune cells in my respiratory system? And how much of the dust would linger in my airways until my grave?

Just because it's legal doesn't make it right. The worrying rise of ‘rent-a-womb’ - Surrogacy is usually viewed as an act of kindness — but it can be dangerous

In April 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 crisis, New York governor Andrew Cuomo approved a much needed state budget. Buried in this 400-page document was a provision to legalize commercial surrogacy.

Passed without the opportunity for legislative hearings or public debates, the law came into effect in February 2021. Critics claim that Cuomo is unleashing an exploitative multi-billion-dollar industry that preys on the vulnerabilities of women.

While surrogates are usually from poorer backgrounds and, in many states, are more likely to be of color and in particular black, the implanted eggs are selected from mainly white women up to the age of 25, usually highly educated and screened for any hereditary illness.

Payment for carrying a baby or babies to full term ranges between $30,000 and $60,000 across the US. And there are huge profits for Big Fertility.

Once a virtue signaler: Always a virtue signaler. Shut your piehole Michelle.

Former first lady Michelle Obama said on Friday’s broadcast of “CBS This Morning” that she worried as the mother of two Black daughters, Malia, 22, and Sasha, 19, “every time they get in a car by themselves.”

When former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd, former President Barack and Michelle Obama said in a joint statement, “true justice is about much more than a single verdict in a single trial.”

Teach your girls not to commit crime, don't resist arrest and FFS don't swallow the fentanyl.

"It's A Hustle": Dogecoin Demolished After Musk SNL Snafu

Once upon a time Saturday Night Live was a celebration of acting talent, of impromptu creativity and most importantly, of humor, which is why it launched the careers of too many comedians to count. Alas, over the past few decades, SNL lost its way, and become preachy podium for virtue signaling poseurs, for status quo apologists and for countless people who revel in the "uniqueness" of their identity politics yet can't cobble together a simple joke if America's Universal Basic Income depended on it. It's also why over the past few decades the viewership of SNL collapsed and countless Americans forgot about the show. Well... many got a stark reminder last night when millions turned on SNL for first time in years (or ever) only to be immediately reminded why they never watched it anymore: yet another catastrophically boring, uninspired and trite attempt by a cast of talentless hacks to be funny yet failing miserably.

And then there was Elon Musk.

The world's 2nd richest man was the main reason why an entire generation of young Dogecoin "traders" turned on SNL for the first time in their lives.... only to see their favorite joke of a cryptocurrency (which it is by definition) demolished after weeks of breathless buildups for what Elon Musk had in store. Unfortunately, as with most things Musk, the action was all in the fervent anticipation of the main event... which turned out to be a fiasco.

The Handyman's secret weapon, duct tape meets The Genius Award Winners.

Two mariners with questionable nautical sense were saved from the ocean near Isla Vista early Saturday aboard their homemade boat constructed from buckets and kiddie pools, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

It was one of two water rescues Saturday morning.

The male non-engineering students in their early 20s crafted a makeshift boat from 20 Home Depot buckets, two plastic kiddie pools, plywood and duct tape, said Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason.

Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day and Genius Award Winner all wrapped into one person.

Can you imagine having to relearn everything you knew? Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

It took Olly Mathers a year to learn how to smile again.

But when he emerges from the surf at Raglan’s Manu Bay with his board under his arm, he can’t stop smiling.

The 35-year-old Raglan man is back for his fifth surfing session on this Thursday morning, part of a 15-year journey to get his life back on track.

On the night of July 7, 2006, Mathers’ life changed forever. He can’t remember that night or the 20 years before that. He retells his story from what others have told him.

Fuck this writer and his freudian psuedo science "expert". Ten peer reviewed studies using real scientific data say otherwise, including the CDC's own study.

Wearing a garlic clove necklace is arguably more effective at staving off the covid virus than masks are.

Free govt. money is one of the main drivers. We're paying people not to work with printed money. People not working means less production, yet more money being thrown at what is being produced.

All the conditions are now in place for massive inflation. Stagflation, actually. Global inflationary depression (this would be a first, actually IIRC) is a possibility.

But the way the Feds now figure inflation and cost of living, they will say that the hose DID really increase in price... so someone instead of eating the increased cost of the hose, would just dig a canal instead... and that's cheap, so there is no inflation.

We're going to get '70s stagflation at a minimum. Worse stagflation more likely and nightmare scenarios are not out of the question.

But you're not going to see interest rates shoot the moon. The reason interest rates went sky high (Fed funds rate over 20% at times) was Paul Volcker at the Fed killing inflation. The history is interesting, but Volcker was the one who bit the bullet and did it.

To kill massive inflation, you've got basically crash the economy by tightening money and raising rates. That's what stops the inflationary expectations feedback loop.

The Fed cannot do that now. Such interest rates would detonate the federal govt, $29T in debt. The Fed would also destroy itself if it did that as well, because it would set off a chain reaction of crashing bond values that would play hell with its bloated balance sheet.

They have painted themselves in the corner. And they're going to destroy the US govt and economy.

108 One of the morons last week recommended watching the Russian Victory Day Parade, which was held today. Glad I watched it. Here are a few things they do that I think are maybe a little different from how we do things here in the USA:

One general rode under a gate topped with an image of Jesus. As he went beneath, he uncovered, and he crossed himself. The paraders and crowd appeared to be composed of people who have NOT been taught to hate themselves for their own history and culture.

The mobile ICBM launchers have a bank of fire extinguishers on the side. They must find that handy for some reason. The banners spelled "May 9" wrong. They spelled it "9 MAR" with the R backwards. Somebody might get Lubyanka-ed for that bonehead mistake.

If they calculated the CPI the pre-1980 way, inflation would be over 10% now. They adjusted it again around 1990, and it would be 6% according to the '80 - '90ish CPI formula. She Shadow govt. states web site for details.

It's crazy. House prices don't even count, and you wouldn't believe the crazy weighting they use. The housing component of the CPI is something called "owner's equivalent rent" which is some nonsense on how much it would cost to rent the house. That has remained low no matter how fast house prices inflate.

Only problem now, is rent is starting to inflate as well, and it will start ticking up the CPI.

To hide inflation officially, they will rejigger and adjust the weights and formula and keep the official inflation number low.

That's part of it but just a small part.

Production was shut down during peak demand for chips in all kinds of products from cars to TVs.

They can't just ramp up production to meet the massive increase. It takes many months to bring a new production line online.

Manufacturers are only selling stuff online and they do nothing to stop bots which buy inventory as fast as it's posted (within a minute) online. Then they are resold at eBay for huge markup.

I don't know whether grocery prices are included in the inflation calculations, but it doesn't matter. Take my word for it, people who shop for groceries every week, know dang well that the prices are going up week after week. It must be tough for families with kids to feed.

145 In college during the 70's. Four of us from the same town went to the college 5 hrs away. Not only were there gas lines but there were limits on how many gals you could get so we'd plan and work on getting the tank on the designated car filled during the week, along with a five gal can for the trunk. Our folks would make sure to get 5 gal cans filled during the week so we'd have enough to get back to school on Sunday. Twas a pain in the buttocks.

Note how the expectation of inflation causes inflation. That is, behavior in response to inflation causes inflation in a positive feedback loop.

Prices are going up! Better buy now. Buying throws money at things, bidding the price up. That feedback loop, once it kicks in, is very hard to break. Volcker did it around 1980. Again, the Fed couldn't do that now without destroying the system.

The chain reaction is both horrifying and interesting. Increased meat costs lead to less people buying beef and chicken and pork. Due to lower demand, inventory is liquidated and jobs are lost. This will happen in many industries, not just food.

Let me show you a scary graph from FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data), maintained by the St. Louis Fed.

This is the M1 money supply:

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M1SL

That is shit your pants stuff right there. Note I've posted graphs of M0, monetary base before, which are scary enough, but a lot of that printing did not get into M1 (it's a complicated mess, but basically, that money was getting shit off the bank's balance sheets, which just parked the cash in their reserve accounts. It did not go into M1).

M1 stands at $18T now. It stood at $4T in Jan. of 2020. The M1 supply has increased 4 -5x time in one year.

The local voting place was run very efficiently, but the ranked ballot system seems like it is rife for political shenanigans. Given that there was no real convention, I can understand the rational, but I am not a fan.
My primary complaint is that it was very hard to find actual factual information on the character, record, resume/cv, and accomplishments of any candidate, but there were myriads of attack ads (from all sorts of political groups) with minimal references to permit validation. I realize "true" information is dangerous to candidates, but this is something that is clearly needed, especially on the "conservative" side!

Allergies of all kinds are on the increase, and no one is certain of the cause. One big one is the hygiene hypothesis, which goes roughly we've become so damned clean, using all sorts of antiseptics to create hyperclean environments to raise infants and young children, that this causes problems with young immune systems.

The immune system needs to be trained on what to respond to and what to let go, and it needs exposure to all sorts of things, like benign bacteria and such. Good bacteria.

And we've got a bunch of parents who keep their young kids hyperclean and don't let 'em go out and get dirty and roll around in the muck.

It goes without saying that me seeing nothing wrong with it is contingent on the surrogate being paid a reasonable fee ($60,000 seems fair to me, $30,000... maybe not so much) and that she is also insured against any medical complications.

227 > People who shoot criminals are heroes.

In one of Robert Heinlein's societies, a shopkeeper who killed an armed robber got a substantial reward from a fund put up by all the other local merchants. He was also expected to display the head on a spike outside his shop until it got too smelly, whereupon it was replaced with a plastic replica.

The robbers probably avoided the shops that had more than one head on display.

233 Is there an explanation for the peanut allergies we see now. Growing up I didn't know anyone who couldn't eat a peanut butter sandwich and had never heard of peanut allergies.
Posted by: Megthered

I did. Back in the early sixties my best friend's brother had a peanut allergy and we were watched very carefully when we made PBJ sandwiches to be sure we didn't get any peanut butter in the jam jar. In the eighties I had a co-worker whose husband had a peanut allergy. In a restaurant he asked the server if they used peanut oil, and was assured that they didn't. Turns out they did, and he had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital.

It has been known for some time, and it is deadly.

That reminds me, I meant to respond about shrinking amounts of product. This is called "shrinkflation", and is a common tactic to disguise price increases. Canned goods that have less, but same price. Toilet and paper towel rolls have less sheets, getting narrower -- even a bigger hole in the center.

That can only go so far, and then a reset is needed: New improved, 20% more! with a price increase. Then you start shrinking again.

The idiot CPI will miss much of this shrinkflation, too.

And it's also interesting to see Gen. Shoygu, the defense minister, cross himself just before he emerges - standing up in the back of a Zil limousine (I think it's a Zil) - from the Kremlin to review the Moscow garrison formed up in Red Square.

When inflation really gets going, getting toward the ol' hyperinflation level, annual or even monthly rates of increase just don't cut it. You get some huge number, and it depends on how you calculate it (compounded rate, fixed annual rate, continous exponential, etc, etc).

The monetary half-life, or the time it takes prices to double becomes a more useful measure.

The record is post-war Hungary, with a half-life of 15 hours. Zimbabwe is #2 with 24.7 hours. Weimar is only #4 with 3.7 days.

293 Oh those wacky Carter years. For me, age 9 and 1/4 to 13 and 1/4. My father, probably until he was on his deathbed, bragged about putting my Bar Mitzvah money in a long-term CD at something like 13%. OTOH, that means interest rates were through the roof, killing home sales. I will confidently say that, absent war or some catastrophe, the same kind of economic situation today, including gas lines and alternating fill-up days (when you could, you filled up), will *never* be as bad now as back then. Simple proof: next time you go to fill your tank up, pull into a parking space (like if it has a quickymart) and sit there for half an hour without using any technology that didn't exist in 1978. Now do it with 3 kids. Yeah. Absent an EMP, which would obviate the whole scenario, Carter-style stagflation today cannot be as bad as OG Carter. (And I'm not even factoring in wide ties, polyester, and horrible moustaches.) The music, though, was cool.

Rookie numbers.

Back then they had to actually run the bills through the printing press again, overprinting them in black with the new denominations. I've seen a postage stamp from Weimar Germany overprinted to be 2 billion marks. It was originally 2 pfennig or something like that.

Now all they have to do is type more zeros into a keyboard and suddenly everybody has 10, or 100, or 1,000, or 1,000,000 times as many dollars as they did five minutes ago.

We're way out in uncharted territory here.

In some hyperinflationary periods, workers would get paid twice per day. Once before lunch, were they would run out and give their wives or whatever money to buy, and then paid again at quitting time.

In Weimar, German psychiatrists named a condition that translates to "cipher madness". Or Zero fever. Back then, all the accounting was done by hand and clerks had to deal with a shit ton of ever increasing trailing zeros on their ledger entries.

They got to snapping, running out of the room screaming, laughing manically and wildly scrawling zeros all over everything.

The headline is an example of why I detest GP any more. Written to imply that actual people at the US Census Bureau spoke and actively confirmed this. It is an intentionally deceptive way to write a headline, and only serves to destroy a website's credibility. I also refuse to respect any site that unironically uses CAPITAL LETTERS on random words as click bait. GP has fallen from such lofty beginnings, to the sorry, no-content, click bait state it's in today.

The Colonial pipeline goes right by me here. And old one is on our property. They stopped using it for pumping and ended up running fiber optic lines through it.

But one of the main ones is less than a mile the way the crow flies. One time in the late '70s, there was massive boom heard one night. Major break in the line in a spot about 2 miles away. There were lakes of diesel fuel on the pipeline tract.

This was fascinating. The other day we were talking about pumped storage hydro, which is about the only serious way to store grid electric energy.

Some outfit is testing out massive compressed air storage systems. You store by running compressors that will compress air into massive underground air caverns (very deep which hold pressure). To release, you run backwards and let the compressed air turn generators.

The efficiency of such systems is generally less than 50%, 40 - 50% being the typical range.

This outfit has figured out a way to get that efficiency to 60% or better, they claim. They store the heat of compression somehow, then reheat the air as it blows off to feed the turbines.

Second that use some water system to maintain constant air pressure in the reservoir.

Whether this will be viable, I don't know, but they're building some test facilities.

Yep. If were serious about energy, we'd be going to Thorium fuel cycle based molten salt reactors. Wonderful things these are compared to the traditional nuclear fuel cycles. Read up on the benefits (and drawbacks) of Thorium.

If the Republic is ever restored, this should be where our energy generation effort is concentrated.

I'm probably bugging out to the Carson City-Reno, Nevada area. I know a few folks there, weed's legal, and there's actually quite a bit of cultural things to do, including historical dancing (which the peeps there I know do). At this point, I'm only here for the weather (though that's getting worse every year) and the fact that I pay about $900/mo mortgage with about 80% equity. If I were renting, I'd be gone. I can still practice CA law with an internet connection so, why stay? It's just that IF the pendulum swings back, I'd like to have this place. It's an 1100 sf condo I paid $200,000 for. Again look up Thorium nuclear reactors. You want a "green" source that can provide shit tons of energy for future economic growth and prosperity with zero carbon footprint? Thorium reactors can do it. If you read the history of how our elites rejected thorium research early on, you'll get quite pissed.

Just think of all the trillions pissed away on the wars since 9/11, bailouts and all that. A fraction of that could've started a thorium reactor project to make it a commercially viable system.

It would solve our energy needs for a 1000 years. I'm not exaggerating. Thorium is much more abundant than uranium (on land, in the oceans, not so much).

This has been known for decades, BTW.
