Professor Jens Ludwig Normally California politics is boring to watch as an outsider. The state continues to get goofier and goofier. Politicians make their names by being more leftist than their opponent. Things just got interesting in California. It looks like a number of Californians have had it with old Gavin Newsome, Gov. It looks like the recall petition drive against him has enough signatures. The effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) reached 1.6 million valid signatures as of Monday, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber said on Monday evening. The bipartisan campaign to recall Newsom is set to be on the ballot this year, pending Weber's final certification of the signatures. Ahhh the joys of socialism...... 'As I’ve been saying, having access to foreign cash is what keeps you afloat here...' Thirteen months of the new normal, time for the first entry in ‘year two’ of the lockdowns. I took some pondering as to how to frame this post without making it too repetitive to previous entries, and I initially found that hard to do because quite frankly, it’s all the same down here. In a general and broad sense, everything is just the same old stagnation. Venezuelan life today is characterized by our unique and endogenous blend of a collapsed and ruined country mixed with the limitations and nuances of a lockdown continues without change. Our personal rhythms and schedules are still dictated by the rather ineffective cycles of ‘radical’ and ‘flexible’ lockdown weeks. No one generally cares about the inert opposition anymore, Juan Guaido’s presidency is but a self-sustaining joke at this point, and the socialist party continues to exert full political control in the nation. Skirmishes between the Venezuelan military and FARC dissidents have reignited our migrant crisis after the pandemic had drastically slowed it up to a crawl, and urban warfare between the Venezuelan police and armed bands is now bread and butter in the Cota 905 area of Caracas. I'll be honest. I'm not a grandparent so I don't understand the love a grandparent has for his or her grandchild. On the other hand, my maternal grandfather has been gone for 50 years and I still have several photos of him displayed in our home. And the following story raises an eyebrow or 2. 'Mom Explains Why Grandparents Can’t Hug Her 2-Year-Old Whenever They Want And Have To Ask For Consent' Hugs and kisses from relatives are nice, but only with consent. That’s what one mother and TikTok video creator is trying to get her daughter’s grandparents to understand. Australian mom Brittany Baxter shared a series of TikTok videos where she discussed how her daughter’s grandparents overstep the boundaries that she’s set out for her child. They ignore their grandchild’s ‘no’ and kiss and hug her anyway. Or they feel hurt that the kid doesn’t want affection at that very moment. Check out Brittany’s videos below and be sure to let us know what you think, dear Pandas. Plenty of people supported Brittany enforcing strict boundaries and teaching her daughter about consent and body autonomy. However, others were more critical of this approach. And consent is a difficult topic to broach because it’s not always expressed overtly and can be implied and tacit. Stuff that makes me say, Da Fuq! Auction house Sotheby’s just made history with its latest sneaker transaction. If I were an employer, why should I consider hiring a University of Pittsburgh grad? Citing COVID-19 related stress levels the University of Pittsburgh will now allow professors to give students a passing grade, even if they didn't finish the required coursework by the end of the term. In an announcement to the University of Pittsburgh community, Joseph J. McCarthy, the vice provost for undergraduate studies, said that the university will be modifying the "'G grade' (incomplete for extenuating circumstances)" to give professors the option to give a student a passing grade, even if they haven't finished the necessary coursework. "This new process will allow a 'fallback grade' to be recorded in cases where a student has done enough to achieve a passing grade in a course but would like more time to finish some well-defined final assignments," the email states. Some good content there, MA. I am particularly thrilled that we will get a chance to give our idiot governor the boot. I don't believe there will ever be a fair election in America again after the last, stolen, election, but I also think that Gavin Newsom is such an embarrassment to the Ds that they aren't going to lift a finger to save him. Thus, I will take great pleasure in going out and voting to throw the bum out.

The original Billy Joe Royal version was played every hour, on the hour, in the strawberry picking fields. That's what I remember as a 10 year old. Hell yes, I picked strawberries as a 10 year old. And Granny was right there with a half dozen of my cousins, teaching us how to earn some of your own money, and also to do better in school and get a real job if you wanted to do something other than picking berries in the hot sun. And to reinforce it, on Friday pay days, we would take our hard-earned cash and Granny would stop at the little store on the way home so we could by candy and pop. Once again on the subject of masks (on which subject, I am becoming boringly repetitive), embrace your inner Karen and wear a mask every time you leave the house. Also wear dark glasses and a baseball cap. Mask + sunglasses + baseball cap = facial recognition FAIL. You have about a 99% chance of defeating facial recognition software with this combination. Let people think you are virtue signaling with your relentless wearing of a mask, and fight back against the surveillance state at the same time.

Not that Griffey Jr didn't deserve to be unanimous -- it should have happened decades earlier. Ego-centric writers making themselves the focus of the process. Ridiculous. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at April 26, 2021 09:45 PM (mht8P) Heh. Griffey Sr played for the Yankees when Ken was an early teenager. Jr and Sr were very tight, and while it was against Yankee policy, Jr would often show up during warn-ups and be all over the field. Knowing how to handle himself around major leaguers, he was universally loved by all the players. George Steinbrenner, owner at the time, saw it once and banned Jr from the practices. All the players defended Jr, and Jr was back before too long. Ken Griffey Jr made no bones about hating Steinbrenner with every fiber of his being. He thought Steinbrenner disrespected his father on a regular basis. And yes, thathalfrican, there has never been a sweeter, more efficient swing in MLB, at least when I've been alive. @358 nurse ratchet-Polo pretty much set the bar for mens colognes. Unfortunately due to regulations and the banning of certain ingredients (oak moss) the modern version of Polo isn't very good. I've had to purchase new old stock/vintage Polo from whats called the Cosmair era Polo which is the Polo old timers like us know. Cosmair is who owned the distribution of Polo back in the 80's-90's.

To all those folks that tell us Washingtonians to move away instead of staying.
Look, after the CW version 2.0 is over, Constitutional America will still need a west coast deep water port. That leaves Seattle or San Francisco, Portland is a half day sailing up the Columbia river, and LA's port is behind a breakwater. It's always easier to hold a territory than to abandon it and try to retake it. So think of us stubborn Morons as looking out for the future. Cuz nobody wants SF to be the deep water port. @382 mikeski-They banned its use due to some people having allergic reactions. Your big designer fragrance houses like Chanel, Hermes, Guerlain, etc have come up with synthetics that mimic what oak moss does really well but they don't share it. Proprietary secrets. The only fragrance makers that are able to use oak moss are niche' and independent perfumers. They're able to skirt around the rules because they do not produce the amounts big fragrance houses do. Of course their fragrances are more expensive.

Stuff that's basically the whale equivalent of a hairball (ambergris). Stuff that comes out of the anal glands of beavers (castoreum), civets (civet), and musk deer (musk). More like a hairball, I think. It's secreted around irritants that the whale has eaten (e.g. squid beaks). In junior high, one of my classmates was killed, walking on the side of the road (not on the road), by a drunk driver. Alcohol is a serious drug and until the penalties match the seriousness of the crime -- and are applied -- tragedies like what Al Bundy linked to will continue to happen. There were two entirely different fragrances one grew accustomed to, as they grew up with the Old Man.
1. Barbasol based barber tool sanitizer and post-shave astringent. Nope, not "after shave", they didn't market it as such. Astringent. This is what he smelled like when he came home after visiting the barber shop. Kids with a fresh haircut didn't smell like that, because, no astringent. 2. The Old Man's preferred of whatever was a) in the medicine cabinet, and/or b) whatever was hot on the market, then. I grew up under whiffs of 'em all. The Old Man presented best with a splash of English Leather. I inherited the Old Spice genetic type. Pro tip. Limit it to ONE drop per cheeck. Works better as a subtlety, not a nose-hammering. @433 Jim-I have a fragrance that smells exactly like a combination of Barbicide and shaving cream by a fragrance house called Initio. Right now I am wearing a Tom Ford fragrance called Beau De Jour, might as well be wearing shaving cream right now.
I have a perfume called Puredistance M, smells just like my fathers old shotgun case with the big glass sliders on the front. The inside was cedar, stored Hoppes#9 and a Remington Silicone gun cloth in it that had a vanilla smell. I love my fragrances for a reason other than good personal hygiene. So many of the Gen Z (or whatever the hell they are called) have no desire to learn how to drive. It's wasn't just Little LCD, but most of his friends, too. I think that is a huge differentiator between those over 29 and the young adults in America. A driver's license (and mom or dad's approval to take the car keys) meant freedom and adventure to me, no matter where I was going. Youngin's have their cell phones, texting, and apps to communicate. Still, it seems nuts to me they don't care so much about driving. I know, my lawn, get the hell off. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at April 26, 2021 11:52 PM (sy5kK) 469

I hate shaving unless it's been 4-7 days and I'm in the shower. Otherwise, it's rip, rip, rip, red, red, red, bleed, bleed, bleed. However, when the beard hair hits that sweet spot in length and density, in a steamy shower, I shave down, shave across, and then up, and it's smooth as Oban 14.

If you live in an urban or surburban area, taking an Uber or Lyft is just too damned easy if you have been drinking any amount over a beer or two. Take the $25 ride home, and then take the $25 ride back to get your car the next morning.
So much cheaper than the ten thousand dollars you will spend on increased insurance, fines and jail time, court appearances, not to mention the person you could have hit driving home. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at April 27, 2021 12:01 AM (sy5kK) 487

Sure, I can have a beer or 2 without affecting my driving to any dangerous degree (I probably overcompensate by paying more attention), but there's no practical way for people to determine whether they're functionally impaired, let alone at/above some nominal level set by their state legislature. Ford tried something like that.
I'm not seeing the connection? Ford concealed a defect in one model. For a while. Ford made the actuarial determination that it would be cheaper to pay out the legal costs than to fix the problem. In that scenario, the legal costs should include revenge maimings and killings. I'd rather people not do something like drive under the influence so we have penalties to discourage that conduct. Otherwise, you're just playing keno behind the wheel. No thanks. Posted by: SFGoth at April 27, 2021 12:32 AM (KAi1n) 546

Having a front end loader on that tractor helped. By tilting the bucket straight down, I was able to use the loader arms to lift the front wheel completely out of the trench, then fill in dirt under it with a shovel, and fill in all the way to the read wheel. The rear wheel was wider than the trench. Had the trench been wider, I would've really been in trouble, as it would've fallen to the axle. And I had a 3pt hitch bush hog on the back. With the aide of the scrape blade attached to another tractor, I was able to fill in the trench for a few feet in front of the 3910. Just as I was hoping, I was able to drive it right out, once I got it filled in. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 27, 2021 12:35 AM (Mzdiz) 553

Its estimated that 40% of women are on some drug that changes their emotions.... that is scarier to me than a couple of beers. ---- There is a class of drugs for emotional distress called "SSRI's". Taken mostly by women with anxieties and depression. I personally have 2 friends who's wives have taken them (both in their 40's) and within a couple of years, have dumped their husbands and are living with old boyfriends from high school they "found" on FB. One just made the announcement that the marriage is over, Eff You, and moved across the country an old boyfriend. Who, btw, has been arrested many times and done 2 stints in prison. Oh, and both guys confided in me that after they started using, and before the women left, the women were total horn dogs and wanted it all the time. Like, "can't you come home for lunch again today? Pleeaase?" And then they were gone. It isn't just alcohol that's dangerous. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at April 27, 2021 12:38 AM (sy5kK) 555

I got a haircut last week - first one since a week before the election. My hair had been getting down close to my shoulders. It's dark brown with patches of silver that become striking, shiny locks when they grow out. I had to get it cut because my lawsuit over Dorkie Dork's "murder" is getting served now and I have to maintain some modest, personal decorum in this regard. Men have considerably less room for personal idiosyncracies and if I want the focus to be on my case and not me, I have to tack into the wind accordingly.

Funny drunk driver story, from back in the '70s when I was a kid. Below our house, and right above my grandmother's house, was a sharp curve. There were many a wreck on that curve over the years. It was more country than it is now, and people would tend to drive to fast and that curve would sneak up on them. When drunk, one had no chance. One night, oh around 2AM, my father heard a big crash. Some idiot had failed to even try to make the curve and had crashed his car head-on into a tree that happened to be right there a few feet off the side of the road. My father ran down there, expecting to find a gruesome scene. It was pretty gruesome for the car, but the driver was conscious, and just had a few cuts on his face and stuff. My father got close and from the smell, realized the guy was shit-faced. He asked him, "Are you all right?". Dad shined his flashlight inside the cab, and saw the guy was turning the key, trying to start it. He said, "I'm okay, but thisssh damn car won't start! Can you give me a jump?" My father said lets get you out of the car, and take a good look and you'll see why it won't start. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 27, 2021 12:44 AM (Mzdiz) 565

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). I'm aware of them. I'm not going to comment one way or the other since I'd just put my foot in my mouth, both ways, except that I wonder how much unnecessary pharma people take when they would be better served cutting out refined sugar, recreational drugs (including alcohol), adjusting their diets for their body chemistry, exercising seriously, and finding things to do that bring happiness to their lives. Surely some people really do need that SSRI, but I suspect a lot would be better served by natural augmentation.

Sadly concur. I was born and raised Methodist. Hell, we have a family pew in the local church with our name on it. Yet they would not allow my Dad's favorite Hymn, Onward Christian Soldier, to be played at his funeral. I'm not convinced the God only want Martyrs... not fighters. I learned a while back (well, mid 30's) that my paternal grandfather may have been in the 'shine business, or supervised it thereof. Long story, which telling Miley delights in. I knew some older guys and was good friend with them in my '20s and '30s. They knew my grandfather. I did not. He died before I was born (heart attack -- my grandmother left his hat on a peg in her house where he put the day he died, and wouldn't let anyone touch it). My grandadddy would've been in his late '40s when they were in their 20s and early 30s. One such fellow, in his 80s at the time, told me I was the spittin' image of my grandfather. Went so far as to say it was spooky. One of them said something to me crazy, and I replied with something off the wall. They fell over, saying that was the exact same thing my granddaddy said. Anyway, the old guy told me, "Now [publius], your grandmother was a pious, church-goin' woman. Your daddy and uncles take after her mostly. But you don't. You take after Mr. Grover (that was his first name). And sometime he just got enough of all that, and had to let it all hang out sometimes. Like you do." THC, the pharma-active mood altering chemical in pot, is fat soluble. It can remain in your bloodstream for up to 30 days; much longer if you are a habitual user. Say 90 days.
Depends upon your frequency of use and level of fatness. Alcohol otoh, is gone from your system within 2 days. Its persistent use can be detected however by checking the level of certain enzymes in the blood. Posted by: GnuBreed at April 27, 2021 01:34 AM (F0YaR) 630

It gets even better. Again, those who knew my paternal grandfather (and they're all dead now), told me I was the absolute spittin' image of him, looks as well as personality. I've seen an old photo of him -- I mean old, like in the 1910s when he was around 30. The resemblance was indeed striking. Now imagine you meet an old woman, around 80 or so, when you're about 29 or so. That old woman, you learn, knew your grandfather. She had since moved off and was back visiting. Her people want to make sure she sees you, 'cause you look so much like your grandfather. The woman absolutely acts like she knows you, and you've never see her before in your life. She's an old woman, and, if you didn't know better, you'd thinks she was sort of flirty with you. You're sort of uncomfortable, but have to be polite, 'cause she's your elder big time. She talks to you like she knows you very well. Very Well. And then you go some mental calculations. She would've been a pretty young thing about 20 or so when your grandpa was in his late '40s or so. I hope some of you understood XX as distinguished from XY, though I don't judge. As to MLii's question, I have not given it up; Heaven forbid, perish the thought, good Heavens no, etc. I just felt it would be good to reset everything in that regard while I'm on this late middle-age health kick. And also to do it, as in accomplish it.
In some sense it's a spiritual pause. I did A LOT of it last year, particularly after the lockdowns started and the riots began -- being a single, 52 y.o. white guy with no one, no job, nothing going on except a hernia, and no worthwhile future in sight, the only pleasure I got was getting baked and reminiscing about the art/music/writing project I was intending to get back to after Dorkie Dork (the amazing kitteh who saved 2 lives) was supposed to have a humane death 2 years ago, which didn't happen. The emotions and feelings it (THC) brought out really gave me a virtual pleasure that I want to actually attain, so it motivated me to keep going, get justice, and then get back to my creativity, "society" be damned. But I'm talking 100-200 mgs of THC where 25mg is considered fairly substantial. Not daily, but.... And AoS was a godsend. Posted by: SFGoth at April 27, 2021 01:54 AM (KAi1n) 647
And then you add in that everybody tells you how much like your grandfather you are, and how he liked to "have fun", and your grandmother didn't approve. ANd you realize what a horny bastard you are, how much you appreciate a "pretty young thing", and like grandson, like grandpa. And then your mind just stops, blanks that line of thought out, 'cause you just don't want to think about it. LOL. Heh. Again, I just don't let my mind complete that reasoning. I've seen picture of my grandfather when he was old, many of them. And I'll look like that myself, I'm sure. But he did have a smile on his face. And that reminds of another one. Of another fellow of my grandfather's generation. Well maybe about 10 years older. A patriarch of sort of a family that owned about 150 acres, which my father and I farmed later on. The old man was sort of prominent. A member of the school board. They hired a young school marm for one of the old one room school house type things. This fellow, "old man Rush", put her up in his house. Long story. Old man's wife goes away for the weekend, but comes back "unexpectedly" and catches the old man and the school marm "en flagrante delecto" in her house, in her bed. The field hands told the story. THe old man came running out of the house. The wife fired a few rounds out of a shotgun at him. She had shells in her apron pocket, they said, and reloaded. They said she wasn't really trying to hit him, just fire over his head, 'cause she could have filled his ass with shot from the distance she first fired. {continued} Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 27, 2021 02:25 AM (Mzdiz) Posted by: Infidel at April 27, 2021 02:26 AM (E0OEG) 676

The old man went running through the rows in a cotton field. With his wife firing at him. He came back about a week or so later, they said. The school marm was moved to another school district. And I was instructed never, ever, never ever bring that up with up with the old man's descendants. I've never heard my grandmother firing at my grandfather, but if I let let that above line of reasoning follow through, I might wonder if it ever did happen, and others were instructed never to tell me about it. :-) Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 27, 2021 02:29 AM (Mzdiz) 678

One more, before I crash. One of those guys my grandfather "mentored" was nicknamed "Spud". It involved some incident with mashed potatoes when he was a toddler. Don't know the details. But he was "Spud" ever since. Old Spud was a character (and talked to me like an equal, 'cause I was so much like my grandfather). And had a mean streak in him a mile wide. His father was a doctor, and bought a lot of land with his wealth, and Spud never really had to work a day in his life. He was the moonshiner, as I understood it. Now, and old man, named Harley, whose daughter was an old maid (and died that way) and was a big church lady at my family church, was sort of town gossip. He got to talking about Spud's moonshinin', womanizing, ornery ways in town (Simpsonville, SC). Talkin' about how Spud was just a heathen and goin' to hell and all that. Word got back to Spud about that. Now, Spud was a mean ol' SOB when he had to be. He got old man Harley down to his pasture on some pretense. {continued} Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 27, 2021 02:42 AM (Mzdiz) 680

The pretense was something about Spud's cows, and he got Harley down to next to the woods (and on a ways was probably Spud's still, which my grandfather probably helped him build). Anyway, once Spud had Harley down at the woods, he said, "Harley, I hear you've been talkin' some shit about me, and I have had enough. I'm gonna kick your ass right here and now!" And he then moved at Harley. Old man Harley took off running across Spud's pasture. His own house place was about two miles or so away. He ran all the way home. In the process, his hat blew off his head, so fast was he running, and landed in Spud's pasture. Spud went and picked up Harley's hat and carried it back to his house, and put it on a peg in the hall, close to the back door. He then put the word out in town, "Tell Harley he left his hat at my place, and anytime he wants to get, he's welcome to come and get it." A v-neck t-shirt gives off douche-vibes better than a popped-collar polo. I used to keep one as a reminder to do the laundry, and so I only wore it a few times ever. My last day in the army I changed out of uniform for the last time, and then told that my unit was giving me an award. There's a picture somewhere of me wearing a douche-bag v-neck while getting an ARCOM.

Now, the true story about "Harley's hat" soon became well know in town. Anytime old Harley got to running his mouth and it got tiresome, all one would have to say was, "Harley, Spud says you left his hat over at his place, and why don't you go and get it?" Harley would get really quiet and leave. I saw that hat at Spud's -- my father told me the story, and mentioned it to Spud when we were over there one time. Spud said that when Harley died, he thought about returning that hat to his daughter. But, he said, he figured that might be impolitic and decided to just leave it be. The hat stayed on the peg. He said that if the daugther wanted it, he'd give it to her, without question. Ol' Spud is dead and gone many years now. I have no idea what happened to Harley's hat. Also wear dark glasses and a baseball cap.
Just make sure you're not wearing a distinctive cap. There probably aren't a half dozen caps here for my small NYC college, versus the tens of thousands of (State University)/(University of the State) caps running around. Posted by: Fox2! at April 27, 2021 03:24 AM (qyH+l) 692

" Body-worn cameras are not going to solve the problem of the enormous gap we see in police use of force in the U.S. against Black versus white Americans." Professor Jens Ludwig
That might be so lets do this: if a person has a warrant out on them send them a registered letter stated there is a warrant out on them and for them to contact said police dept. If there is no response after 7 days, resend it "2nd chance" stamped on the front and back of the envelope. If no response in another 7 days cut off any and all state or federal monthly funds. You will get an answer then. Posted by: sidney at April 27, 2021 10:01 AM (+fjIe) Processing 0.1, elapsed 0.1126 seconds. |
