Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by The Breeze. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “It’s not justice because justice is George Floyd going home tonight to be with his family,” she said, continuing to list off a series of examples: Justice is Adam Toledo getting tucked in by his mom tonight. Justice is when you’re pulled over, there not being a gun that’s part of that interaction because you have a headlight out. Justice is your school system not having or being part of a school-to-prison pipeline. Justice is a municipality and a government that does not — because it trickles down right? — that does not value military and armaments more than it healthcare, and education, and housing. So justice is Adam Toledo being tucked in at night by his mom. With all due respect Congress woman Cortez, how could his mom tuck him in bed when he was running the streets of Chicago at 2:30AM with a firearm? On March 29, just after 2:30 AM, Chicago’s ShotSpotter alert system detected eight or nine gunshots in the West Side, largely Latino, neighborhood of Little Village, where gangs like the Latin Kings and Two Six have made gunplay a regular part of life. Chicago police officer Eric Stillman and his partner sped toward the gunshots once they received the ShotSpotter alert, doubtless hoping to nab the perpetrators and spare the community additional carnage. When they arrived on the scene, almost immediately after those shots were fired, they happened upon two individuals. One of them—who we now know to be 13-year-old Adam Toledo—took off on foot and, at one point, pulled a gun with his right hand. Stillman gave chase, and the world saw what happened next—at least the part highlighted (and, in one case, deceptively edited) by media outlets, many of which elided the actual events of Toledo’s shooting. The immediate cause of Toledo’s death was the bullet fired by Officer Stillman. But it’s worth examining how a 13-year-old boy ended up in a full sprint through a dark alley at 2:30 AM with a gun in his hand and a police officer on his tail. Start a few minutes before the shooting. Though it hasn’t gotten much attention, a video compilation that the Chicago Police Department released includes footage that seems to show Toledo walking with a young man before one (or both) fired the eight or nine shots at a passing vehicle near the alley where the police encountered Toledo. Exactly who pulled the trigger remains unclear (the footage is grainy), though CNN reported last Friday, citing prosecutors, that both Toledo’s hand, and the gloves of the man he was with, tested positive for gunshot residue. According to police, that man is a 21-year-old named Ruben Roman, who was arrested at the scene for allegedly obstructing Officer Stillman as he gave chase. Over the years while yours truly has been hosting The ONT there has been commentary about avoiding jury duty. Although for some of us it is our reluctant civic duty. But if you do get selected here is a sure fire way to get excused. Pronto. A juror in the horrific dismemberment death of Florida woman Nicole Montalvo, 33, was kicked off of the trial on Tuesday morning for getting shuteye in court. Prosecutors voiced concern that the juror missed testimony against the defendants, the victim’s estranged husband Christopher Otero-Rivera, 33, and his father Angel Luis Rivera, 64. After that, the judge claimed to see the juror fall asleep Monday afternoon. What's our science course tonight? How many bubbles are there in a glass of beer? “How Many CO2 Bubbles in a Glass of Beer?” After pouring beer into a glass, streams of little bubbles appear and start to rise, forming a foamy head. As the bubbles burst, the released carbon dioxide gas imparts the beverage’s desirable tang. But just how many bubbles are in that drink? By examining various factors, researchers reporting in ACS Omega estimate between 200,000 and nearly 2 million of these tiny spheres can form in a gently poured lager. Worldwide, beer is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages. Lightly flavored lagers, which are especially well-liked, are produced through a cool fermentation process, converting the sugars in malted grains to alcohol and carbon dioxide. During commercial packaging, more carbonation can be added to get a desired level of fizziness. That’s why bottles and cans of beer hiss when opened and release micrometer-wide bubbles when poured into a mug. These bubbles are important sensory elements of beer tasting, similar to sparkling wines, because they transport flavor and scent compounds. The carbonation also can tickle the drinker’s nose. Gérard Liger-Belair had previously determined that about 1 million bubbles form in a flute of champagne, but scientists don’t know the number created and released by beer before it’s flat. So, Liger-Belair and Clara Cilindre wanted to find out. Moar science. The older you get, the easier the hangovers are to deal with. As you get older, you may have found hangovers have gone from something you could laugh off with a McDonald's to a three day event. But despite the painful experiences we've all suffered first-hand, an expert study has found that "hangover severity declines with age". Looking at feedback collected from 761 people with an age range of 18 to 94 years old, it says that when participants consumed the same amount of booze, older people suffered less the following day. It put this partly down to a decline in pain sensitivity as we age, hinting that we simply get better at dealing with it as we get older. On this day: 21 Apr 2016 On this day: 21 Apr 2016 Future pranksters might want to take note: faking your own kidnapping for laughs is never a good idea. According to KAGS, Vincent Oggero, of College Station, Texas, learned this lesson the hard way after being charged with filing a false police report late last week. The incident occurred on February 11, when Oggero reportedly tried to pull a prank on his friends as they were leaving a restaurant. The joke? A terrifying message written on their receipt, alleging that he was a victim of kidnapping. After he and his party left, restaurant staff found Oggero's note, which read, "I NEED HELP I got kidnapped" in addition to a phone number. Presumably, the 19-year-old Oggero did not imagine his prank would lead to such serious repercussions. She said FUCK CANCER! Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. I hope there isn't a pop quiz. I would get the SRV question correct, on that I'm confident. And the Kurt C suicide, that was around the time there was a big gun grabbing push starting again. The local news here was swimming in Kurt Cobain suicide news. Buddies would always joke to each other when starting any sentence, "did you hear about Kurt? All you need to know, is that guns were involved." Said that in public at a bar a few days after it happened, and you would have thought I was going to destroy the world or something. I even got challenged to fight with someone in college (I was in my 30's) but buddies stood up behind me when words started flying, and the guy turned pale and walked away. Bad thing is that I had to pick up the next round of drinks, even though I didn't ask, they just voted unanimously and my bar tab immediately grew. Yup, my friends, anything for a free drink. One of the Sirius stations is doing a rundown of the top 50 albums of 1971 (50 year anniversary) and good god, almost every one of them is an all time classic. What a year for music! I can't think of 10 albums in the last 20 years that would make any all time great list, and in 1971 there was a new classic being released every week.

Two best ringtones I've heard. First, was my former boss' cel phone. When his wife would call, it would play the Imperial March from one of the Star Whores movies. She was not pleased when this was disclosed. Funniest of all though, I was in line a pizza joint. Lady in line behind me, her fone blew up. In the voice of Stewie from Family Guy, doing the "mommy! mom! momma! mommy! mother! mom! mommy! near-endless plaintive wail of comedic mirth and (barely) exaggerated display of infantile will. Best prank of a ring tone though, I got a friend's teen daughter to snag me the password to her daddy's phone. Which soon had a rich, wet-fart ringtone for all incoming calls. We shared a table at Bingo last night with a 70-something ex-nurse, who gave us her rant on the utter stupidity of telling everyone to wear gloves and masks, b/c NO ONE did it correctly and all they did was contaminate themselves.

Just waking up the other morning and bam, something hits my back door window like it's coming in. I get up and a robin is laying on my porch knocked out. Within the blink of an eye a falcon (peregrine?) landed, looked around and took off with the robin. 5 feet from me. Pretty cool, don't know how he didn't break the window.

In addition to Cobain's headless corpse being discovered on April 8, 1994, a far, far more important event occurred on that day.
Sharkman, then a 2L at Seattle University School of Law, skipped out on class to go hear Associate Justice Antonin Scalia speak at the University of Washington. The very commie-lib crowd of students tried their best to trip him up during Q&A, but he roasted every one of them with his intellect and a very dry, sarcastic wit. I'd have to put "My Sharona" at the top of my one-hit wonder list. I got to looking up lists of one-hit wonders. One problem is how do you define a one-hit wonder exactly. We know what it means. A singer or group has a big hit, and only one big hit and is never heard from again. One standard definition is a song by a single act that makes the Top 40, and that act never makes the Top 100 ever again. The definition of "act" is tricky as well. Example, singer under his own name meets the OHW, but yet has other hits singing for different group. All that complicates the precise definition. Justice, something, "George Floyd going home tonight"
Justice would include whatever the penalty for circulating fake currency, and whatever hinky shit was going down with his drug dealer that led him to ingest the fentanyl that killed him. A TV show in Iraq has sparked outcry over fake ISIS fighters 'kidnapping' celebrities, strapping fake suicide vests to them and telling them they will be executed. The scene is the same every time: a celebrity, invited for a charitable project, visits the home of a family said to have escaped the clutches of the Islamic State (IS) group. Once inside, actors disguised as jihadists pounce. The jihadists may be fake, but the pleas of the trapped celebrities are very real (TV series pictured, left and right). Seems like, given that artists get paid a (small) amount of money every time their song is played on the radio or, nowadays, on a streaming service, that a canny band would try to write as many "one song segues into another" pairs as they could. That way you get paid for playing two songs, not just one.

>> dea of a variable speed of light (not the top speed, but the idea that gravity can slow light down) which he amd everyone else promptly forgot about after he wrote a single paper on it,
No one forgot about. Gravity does indeed "slow light down", at least the coordinate speed. Standard General Relativity. Take the simplest Schwarzschild exterior metric. The radial coordinate speed of light is c*(1 - R/r), where r is the radius, and R is 2GM/c^2, the Schwarzschild radius. Tangential speed takes out a square root of that factor. You'll see "light stops" at the event horizon. But that's merely a coordinate. The local speed of light as measured by *any* local observer using his own natural ruler and clock will always be 'c'. That is what is meant by constant light speed. Or in geometric terms, light follows a null path through spacetime. In flat space time, that null path has a speed of c everywhere and always. In curved spacetime, it does not. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 22, 2021 12:51 AM (Mzdiz) 640

>> But what is "gravity" and how do it work?
No one knows. Basically as Wheeler, one of the high priests of General Relativity (and coauthor of the Bible on the subject, "Gravitation" or simple "MTW", for Misner, Thorne, and Wheeler), said, spacetime tells matter how to move, and matter tells spacetime how to curve. General Relativity tells you how that matter does that. That is, how to calculate what it does. It doesn't tell you why. No theory can ever tell you why, only what and how. Indeed, even the notion of "curvature of spacetime" is nothing but a mathematical metaphor. The mathematics of differential geometry is useful in predicting how gravity works. But is there anything "really curving"? And it doesn't even matter. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 22, 2021 01:06 AM (Mzdiz) 655

The way it works, at least with the Brits (mostly) is that a wife gets all the status of the husband. So woman marries a duke, she's a duchess. But it doesn't go the other way. Some dude marries a duchess, he ain't a duke. The biggest example is the wife of a king is a queen (consort). She gets "your majesty". But the husband of queen regnant, just as Philip to QEII, ain't nothing but what she gives him. There ain't no such thing as a king consort. QE II's daddy made Philip a Duke upon his marriage to her. She made him a prince when she ascended to the throne. As Philip himself quipped when some reporter asked him about how he view his "constitutional role", he replied, "Constitutionally, I don't exist." So, I'll be like Philip and wear the mantle of constitutional nonexistence. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at April 22, 2021 01:19 AM (Mzdiz) 664

Morning Horde.
Posted this yesterday but asking that your prayers continue. Please pray for my great nephew Riley. 19 years old and hospitalized since Tuesday. Chest, neck and jaw pain. Has a mass outside his heart and a swelled lymph node in his armpit. Thank you. Posted by: neverenoughcaffeine at April 22, 2021 05:13 AM (vLT5l) 755
