The Morning Rant - Heritage Foundation’s Incoherent Excuse-Making For Biden’s Rising Gasoline Prices
[Buck Throckmorton]

Monkey Cowboy.JPG

The Heritage Foundation is one of those faux-conservative institutions that suckered a lot of us for too many years, cashing our checks while writing about conservative goals and ideals. When Donald Trump came along and started trying to actually implement conservative policies rather than just talk about them, The Heritage Foundation swung left, finding common cause with enemies of conservatism, including our tech overlords.

As Tucker Carlson noted about Heritage:

"They make deals with people who hate you. They secretly sell out your interests, then they beg you to tithe like it's the medieval church. Like you owe them your money. That's the system that we've had for decades. Maybe that's why no matter how much money you send, nothing gets more conservative. Just the opposite. You wonder just how long this system can continue.

Recently, Heritage’s Nicolas Loris had a syndicated column, “What’s Behind Rising Gas Prices?” (safe link – not to Heritage’s web site) in which he tried to make the argument that rising gas prices have nothing to do with Biden. Nothing at all. But here are some of the things Heritage does blame for gas prices rising so sharply since Biden became President just a few months ago:

• OPEC production levels in 2020 (while ignoring 2021.)
• A law passed in 1920.
• A law passed in 2005.
• Weather
• A change of seasons.
• Gas taxes - which are unchanged since Biden took office.

In trying to shield Biden from blame, here is what Heritage didn’t mention:

• President Biden shutting down the Keystone Pipeline, which was scheduled to carry 800,000 barrels of oil per day to Texas refineries.
• President Biden’s executive order suspending all drilling and fracking on government lands.
• President Biden’s moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal lands.
• President Biden committing the US to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement, which merely seeks to destroy the oil and gas industry in the United States.

Here are a few highlights of Heritage’s embarrassing effort to protect Biden.

In an effort to boost prices when they began falling sharply a year ago, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and Russia agreed to continue curtailing production. Now, however, demand is picking back up.

Heritage advises us that OPEC cut production a year ago. But prices only started rising a couple months ago. What’s going on with OPEC now? Oh. “OPEC’s Production Rises In March As Iran Boosts Output” Oh well. That would explain why Heritage is dishonestly talking about year-old OPEC production cuts rather than current OPEC production levels now that their man Biden is in the White House.

Refining is the second-largest cost, making up a quarter of the retail price for gasoline. The recent severe cold snap in the Gulf Coast not only reduced domestic crude production by 10%, it also knocked 20% of the entire country’s refining capacity offline.

So, with the freeze in the rear-view mirror and production rapidly coming back on line, prices should head back down, right? Funny, but that part was somehow omitted. Because Heritage knows darn well that gas prices are only going up under Biden’s anti-petroleum policies.

Federal and state taxes, on average, add another 30 cents per gallon and make up 22% of the retail price.

Wait. Is he saying that new gas taxes have suddenly appeared in the cost per gallon? No. Heritage is now just adding distractions. Those same taxes per gallon were in the price of gas before Biden took office and have nothing to do with the rapid increase in gas prices since Biden’s inauguration.

Americans pay higher “hidden costs” today from bad public policy decisions made decades or even more than a century ago. For instance, the Jones Act, passed in 1920, mandates that any goods shipped by water between two points in America must be transported on a U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged vessel with a crew that is at least 75% American.

Does the Jones Act have a provision that kicked in 101 years after being passed, affecting gas prices in 2021 in a manner that didn’t affect gas prices in 2020? Of course not, Heritage has completely abandoned trying to explain why gas prices have shot up under Biden, and is now simply trying to distract the reader by pointing out that there are other costs in a gallon of gas besides the petroleum.

There are still more of these:

Another hidden cost is the Renewable Fuel Standard, passed in 2005 and expanded in 2007. The policy mandates that billions of gallons of ethanol (primarily corn-based) be blended into gasoline each year.

Again, Heritage is creating a distraction. Do the Renewable Fuel Standards of 2005 and 2007 affect gasoline prices in 2021? Sure. But no more so than they affected gas prices in 2020, or 2019, or 2018, etc. The Renewable Fuel Standard Act has nothing to do with the spike in gasoline prices under Joe Biden.

In trying to protect President Biden from the destructive consequences of his anti-petroleum policies, The Heritage Foundation has published an illogical and incoherent piece. But it is a helpful reminder that Heritage is now our adversary in the battle for freedom against the governing class. Heritage, along with Democrats and anti-American globalists, wants to make you suffer with higher gas prices, reducing both your standard of living and your freedom.

14 I'm not exactly sure what or why organizations like Federalist do this. They tend to back off eventually when they get enough heat (for example they started out trashing Trump then became more positive toward his programs and decisions without personally praising or giving him any credit).

But I think Tucker has them read just right: they take money, expect donations, but never actually accomplish anything whatsoever.

Now we also have "my truth", but the truth is more like The Flying Lizards, I Want Money. No ideal feels as good as a flashy 7,000 square foot apartment in DC and generational wealth.

Coca-Cola's chief general counsel Bradley Gayton -- who designed Coke's diversity plan and tried to impose racial quotas in hiring lawyers -- has abruptly quit the company with a nice, fat settlement:

Coke also put a "pause" on their diversity scheme, according to the new general counsel. This part is kind of weird though:

"As part of the agreement, [Gayton] will receive a $4 million sign-on payment and a monthly consulting fee of $666,666, beginning this month and ending April 2022," said Coke on the lawyer's resignation.

42 Heritage is not a monolithic organization. There are factions there. And many of the people there deeply loathe people in other factions. They are also beholding to major foreign corporations who donate enormous sums.

The new leadership is much less conservative than the original leadership as well. Kay Cole James has been a stunning failure as president. Edwin Feulner seems to have been a committed conservative at the start but he seems to have succumbed to the inevitable desire to preserve the organization rather than the core principles.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at May 05, 2021 10:15 AM (4fSQf)

70 In fairness (not that I am interested in being fair), it is a bit more complicated than even this. Of the things you mentioned, most of those won't have immediate effects on supply or delivered price. The pipeline (Phase Four) wasn't operational yet, the moratorium doesn't effect current production, no Paris-related changes yet, etc.

All of these things will have very bad future effects that producers, transporters and traders will start hedge against. That will cause earlier action, but it's still very recent. It's all bad and it all has influence, but I don't think it is the whole (or maybe even majority as of yet) answer. Heritage's answers aren't answers at all.

Not one mention of massive stimulus and inflationary monetary activity. The funny money sloshing through the system has to go somewhere. It is starting to leak out. It had been largely contained since 2008 in equities, bonds and real estate, with relatively little hitting commodities. That's different now. We've had a lot more monetary inflation and - unlike in the 2008-2019 period - massive helicopter drops with more to come. Inflation is back.

Just watched Mary Barra, CEO of GM on CNBC this morning. She said that all of the company's product lines, including it's EV's are sold out for this year. The majority of trucks that are managing to be built( remember there is a chip shortage) are sold as they come off the line. Dealers are simply becoming the delivery system for them.

I know my long time Chevrolet dealer has two new trucks on the lot and about 1/4 the normal car stock. Used vehicles sell almost as fast.

I remember and still am pissed at how in the 1970s in response to the fuel crisis, people started to get a lot of Diesel powered cars, because diesel was like 25 cents a gallon cheaper.

Yeah I burnt a chunk of my Western Hero book sales proceeds on groceries delivered from the store and it was... a lot less than last time. Everything is more expensive, across the board, from just a year ago. Sometimes depressingly more so.

And the food companies can't really reduce the size of packaging much more either which was their go-to move when Obama was in office.

Sadly because the recovery and booming economy was snuffed out by crazed Wuhan Flu response, container sizes never went back to normal.

122 I am really starting to worry about inflation. The last time I was this concerned was in 2009, but the Fed proved me very wrong by being able to contain inflation to the financial markets, with it really only leaking into financialized things in the real world (namely real estate being what most normal people saw). Now, though, prices are starting to move a lot more. The funny money is being dropped directly into people's pockets now, and the state itself is going on a bender. It's leaking out all over the place and my fear is that it becomes a torrent.

Real estate is absolutely insane. I bought my house at the end of December, so basically four months ago and change. Zillow has it's estimate for it at +3.4% from when I bought it. The top and bottom of their range has moved +5.5% from when the listing first went off the market (when it reflected only the recent sale and active listings nearby).

And that's just the now-classical inflation in real estate. My grocery bills have moved by about five percent since the first week I moved here, especially in meats, cheeses and paper products.

Change your frame of reference. This isn't about making money, doing business, serving customers, serving shareholders, developing growth or anything else. This is about ideology and, consequently, about waging ideological war. The board rooms are majority communist and HR departments are entirely comprised of commisars (political officers).

Did the Russian Purges and Hitler's genocide and Pol Pot's slaughter of urbanites or Mao's mass slaying of traditional peasants make any economic sense? No, they didn't. Not a single action taken by an ideological warrior has even a single economic motive.

The great murderous barbarians have embodied, to the core of their beings, the ideal of the "non-profit enterprise." They truly did not care about money. Anyone who does care about money doesn't slaughter his own market.

We have been looking at houses for the SIL to move closer to us. Houses around us are being listed for $100,000 over last years assessments and they are getting it. Nothing decent stays on the market for more than 2-3 days and often have multiple bidders. It's insanity and has to come crashing down at some point. 195 We're also seeing an unintended (I doubt that's actually true, but it is according to their propaganda materials) of the UBI scheme we've embraced. It has been mentioned here before, but not completely in my opinion.

Employers that are still hiring are having trouble filling job vacancies. It is too remunerative to remain on the dole, and with no risk that it will ever end there's no incentive to beat the post-UBI crush and get a job *now* (this is a hugely important factor - if you think it will end, then you're a fool to not take a small pay cut to get a job now while there is one vs. waiting to be one of a bazillion people hitting the market all at once).

This will bid up wages because it has to. Businesses are now competing with UBI and have to pay more to fill a position against what is in essence the market's biggest employer (the dole). This, too, will drive inflation and continue to do so cyclically until the brakes go on in the form of an industrial collapse or the ending of the UBI scheme.

224 For those looking for a good time at the movies that you may not have ever heard of:

Twentieth Century (1934) by Howard Hawks, starring Carole Lombard and John Barrymore is a consistently amusing and delightful screwball comedy that I had honestly never heard of until last night.

One of the many reasons I love Howard Hawks is his ability to excel in several different genres.

Depending on area, more than possible. In the Denver area, a single-family house in the 2,000 sq. ft. range in a decent part of town will *start* in the mid to high 400s and in good parts of town it's worse (unless it's a total dump). A buddy of mine is buying a house there and he's been stymied multiple times by cash offers at $20k+ over asking. Most places are selling within two days at $15+ over ask, many of them to cash buyers.

That's a lot of money for a cash buyer, and I doubt it's all rich people doing it. I suspect the private equity guys are fencing a lot of suburban property.

That's our problem here. The guy who built our house is desperate to buy it back. His wife passed away and wants to move into town near his kids before he gets too much older. I told him the other day it wasn't going to happen because we literally could not find any other place to buy and we have been looking.

He wants the house badly because he custom built it at cost for his friend who died right before the house was done and he really overbuilt the place. Pretty sure he took a loss on it, but it was for his best buddy.

The real battle is three way: the In Crowd vs the true collectivist believers vs the true Americans. Cause the average person thinks it is a two way battle like sportsball, it gets confusing.

Might want to take a look at her underwear drawer and as long as she doesn't cut the tags off you can get her the size she believes she is.

Now trying it on to compare the size, or having the store clerk do it is a pretty quick path to spending lots of cash on couples therapy or a good lawyer.

342 Do it, DB. I spent eight years living in a 1965 Airstream. They are very comfortable. It's hard on the floor and you have to be careful about condensation.

The law of inflation is to buy things today, as they will be more expensive tomorrow. Buy tools. If you don't have a garden, get plastic laundry baskets, put in a trash bag and fill with potting soil. Grow some greens or lettuce and learn how to grow things. Buy a few extra items at the store, for long term storage. If you can't move from where you currently are, think about getting a small piece of land somewhere and a trailer that you could camp out in. It would get you out of the city if things turn ugly.

368 359 Houseboats are not good. You have to have a place to moor it and you can't count on being able to stay in the current location (much like a mobile in a trailer park). Out here, the state DNR likes to get rid of marinas and put in restrictions about where you can have a house boat. It's one of the reasons my husband got in the legal battle with DNR.

May I ask, not being specific of course, where is this the case? We are seriously considering living on the water. Where we are now, we have a large boat that is somewhat too small to live on, but there does not seem to be any hassles for the people we know who live on their boats.

449 After Twitter's 24% stock value loss ..

Twitter's days as a completely free platform could be ending.
According to comments made by CEO Jack Dorsey at the virtual Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference on Feb. 10, 2021, subscriptions and other forms of payments could be coming to Twitter. "The first thing we want to focus on is that economic incentive to people who are contributing to Twitter," Dorsey, who is also the CEO of the digital payments company Square SQ, (SQ) said at the conference. "That can come through a regular subscription, that can come through content unlock, that can come through tipping. There is a host of things and right now we are just studying and prioritizing what those things look like."

Seems like Jack Dorsey has the business model backwards or he is an absolute genius. I'll go with the first one.
Twitter and Facebook have the actual users as the product. If you can get the product to self finance then you have stumbled onto one of the greatest money making schemes since Ponzi.
