Jeff Bezos Hired Army of Trolls to Defend His Reputation and Attack His Critics on Twitter

BREAK. THEM. UP.

Monopolist billionaires are recruiting -- paying -- nasty internet trolls to harass their critics, while simultaneously demanding that their Tech Monopolist cronies ban and censor their critics.

YouTube, for example, just created another new tool so that Disney can silence its critics -- allowing corporations to turn off the "Dislike" counter on their videos.

This is all obviously being done by mutual request.

And you know that Bezos' cronies at Twitter aren't going to ban his Troll Army or punish Amazon for organizing a harassment campaign.

This is cartel shit.

Cartels get trust-busted.

And I don't care how many pseudoright shills are on their payrolls.

Amazon recruited an army of Twitter trolls and code-named it 'Veritas' to target critics like Bernie Sanders and defend Jeff Bezos

The 'army' is made of ambassadors who go online to defend the company

"Ambassadors."

It began in 2018 but has become particularly relevant in the midst of of 6,000

Amazon workers in Alabama who were voting on whether to form a union

The ambassadors defend warehouse conditions and troll Amazon's critics

Training documents reveal they are told to speak out in a 'blunt' way if necessary

In other words: Harass and bully people.

Amazon recruited a Twitter army that was code-named 'Veritas' whose members were picked for their 'sense of humor' - and their task was to defend Jeff Bezos' reputation online.

The army was recruited in 2018 but reared its head again this week as workers at an Amazon fulfillment center in Alabama voted on whether to form a union amid complaints about working conditions.

On Twitter, the army has defended worker conditions and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and has even gone after the company's biggest critics like Bernie Sanders, the liberal senator from Vermont.

Organized harassment campaigns and "dogpiling" are grounds for permanent banning on Twitter -- unless you're one of Jack Dorsey's corporate cronies.

THIS IS CARTEL SHIT.

They were told specifically to confront people on Twitter in a 'blunt' manner, according to an internal document about their training that was obtained by The Intercept.

It read: 'To address speculation and false assertions in social media and online forums about the quality of the FC [Fulfillment Center] associate experience, we are creating a new social team staffed with active, tenured FC employees, who will be empowered to respond in a polite—but blunt—way to every untruth," the project description reads. "FC Ambassadors ('FCA') will respond to all posts and comments from customers, influencers (including policymakers), and media questioning the FC associate experience.'

These are the same people who claim the power to censor people and ban the sales of books if it departs from their version of "the truth" -- and yet here we have one of the Tech Monopolists decreeing that any criticism of him or of his company's practices are contrary to "the truth."

Nearly 6,000 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer are deciding whether they want to form a union - the biggest labor push in the online shopping giant's history.

I'm not a union booster, but I certainly want unions to bring their famous levels of efficiency and profitability-enhancing to Amazon.

By the way:

This is simply a more visible, more blatant version of the same Pay for Play system the monopolists have with much of the "conservative" media.

You don't think the people who are making $60-80,000 per year from AEI -- while also working as supposedly independent journalists -- are ever going to bite the corporate hands that feed them, do you?

They won't even admit which corporate client is supporting them. And as I've said a lot -- each of these guys has a specific benefactor buying him the equivalent new home every 4-6 years. They know who these donors/paymasters are, but refuse to disclose that to readers, and thereby alert them to the fact that some columns are written as specific favors to specific clients.

Instead, they pretend that their money comes from AEI itself.

It doesn't. AEI is a corrupt corporate pass-through organization to launder direct bribery of "conservative" influencers.

"Right-to-work" means that the union "closed-shop" is prohibited (i.e., you MUST join the union to work). It doesn't prohibit unions, and those workers who don't vote for the union won't lose their jobs if they refuse to join the union (if the unionization vote is successful).

Whether the workers will vote to form a union, or not, is the subject of the current election. Amazon doesn't want a union there at all (for obvious reasons).

I suspect that they're betting they're big enough that Amazon would have to come to the negotiating table, and that if they don't the backlash from other unions will be enough to hurt them. Plus, once one site unionizes, it will make it easier to convince other sites to do so as well.

People forget that for Bezos, this is old hat.
Bezos started Amazon by using his initial funding to sell all books at a loss or breakeven, so as to put all other booksellers who didn't have billions of cash to go broke.
And then, after his biggest competitors were either dead or a shell of what they once were, raised the price of books back to a profitable sale.
And now he is doing that with every category of product sold on Amazon.
And other than MegaCorporate frienemy, Walmart, there is no other company around to challenge him.

But it's limited. In order to collect it the Union has to show how much of their budget was spent on collective bargaining as opposed to other things (administration, lobbying, etc.). Assume it's 10%. If the normal union dues are $50 per check, they are only allowed to take $5/check from you if you're not in the union and if that's allowed. Only the amount that represents the value of your "free ridership" on the collective bargaining agreement. But in right-to-work states, this is usually forbidden, too, because there are no closed shops. You're in the union and covered by the CBA, or you're at-will and set your own terms. I think that forced union dues to cover collective bargaining despite opting out of the union only happens in "closed shop" situations where *all* employees are on the same terms, regardless of membership status.

82 There's a conservative case to be made for breaking up big corporations, no matter what industry. Too often they become these behemoths who are riddled with rot, and help create fragility throughout the economy, and are increasingly hostile to the social fabric. Note that the same case can be made for the government, which is after all simply another type of corporation. Hence why we have multiple levels of government and multiple branches of government: so that none of them needs to be particularly large in order to accomplish necessary goals.

113 Inventors and sellers of unique products:
Fair Warning.
Since Amazon computers record and analyze EVERY SALE on their website, they know how well your product is selling before you do.
And if it is selling well, they will find a way to copy it, build it in China, at a lower price than you can build it, and undersell your product right next to it when a customer searches for YOUR product.
And just like that, your sales drop like a rock. Oh, and then Amazon will probably raise the cut they take, for selling on their site and fulfilling the order from their warehouse.
There are thousands of examples of this, and Bezos has made this stealing into a science.
Because he has unlimited funds to do so, and Walmart only sells their own stuff.

Yup. Well, some specific *games* and developers were getting sycophantic reviews. When this was called out as inexplicable by the consumers who read the games press, they didn't disclose their conflicts of interest (the real cause) and instead played the "you hate these because you're girl-hating trolls" card. Then the truth came out.

But the games press made a huge mistake. Had they just done a mea culpa, fired the worst offenders and then disclosed potential conflicts of interest (as is standard practice) going forward, GamerGate would likely never have happened.

My ex bought me some amazon basics t-shirts last summer when we were going on vacation (idk why, girls just like to buy shit). They were laughably shitty quality, and one ripped at the seam in the shoulder area the first time I wore it.

I was actually impressed at how shitty the t-shirts were. But all the reviews were really good. And obviously they were pretty cheap.

165 It's going to be interesting, seeing who wields more power: Unions or Amazon.

Amazon is betting they're big enough that, if they go down, it will hurt the economy to the point Congress will do something to protect them.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at March 31, 2021 03:52 PM (2SdPm)

166 a lot of Amazon sellers (especially the Chinese ones) have programs where they'll send you a free product in return for an "unbiased" review.

Authors have been doing that for ages, and it generally works because you can only put out so many books in a lifetime. The problems start with companies that put out thousands of products a month.

Getting a free book every few years from an author to review doesn't hurt you much if they cut you off, so the system tends to work.

Although I don't recommend it, because a lot of these reviewers are not that great at their work or may not really like your genre or writing style so they don't get what you're doing. And that leads to tepid reviews.

Price's Law! Half of your output is created by a square root of your population. That would mean that half of the tweets are created by 4.6 million users - or about 22% (square root of 21 is 6.6, approximately). So 80% of content coming from 10% of users (2.1 million), if that's approximately true, then Twitter's user counts are *probably* grossly inflated, or Price's Law doesn't apply to Twitter (and that seems unreasonable).

Dower's diatribe about American racism in the Pacific War has been called "the last atrocity of the Pacific War", with good reason.

His "analysis" simply doesn't make any sense, or take account of facts. Obvious ones.

Every distasteful thing he thinks he can link to "racism" arose from Japanese behavior, first, and as an initial impetus. Refusal to surrender. Treacherous fake surrender ("treacherous" being the formal term used in law of land warfare for what they did). Murder and gross systematic mistreatment of POWs, and of civilians.

And of course the crowning glorious facts that render his silly "analysis" ridiculous. Like the US investing in medical teams specifically to care for civilians before invading Okinawa (a unique thing in history of warfare, at that point, and a thing only haphazardly done even in the ETO). And top of it all, of course: occupation of Japan, with fewer "incidents" than occur in one weekend in Chicago, smooth harmonious transition to peaceful life under a far better system of government imposed on them, and spectacular economic success with favored status.

223 Price's Law!

Forget about the trolls that Bezos hired. IIRC, when the whole pics affair came to light, the first thing that he did was get his lackeys at the WaPo to publish a story saying that Trump got his friend David Pecker, owner of the National Enquirer, to get the pics to disparage a rival. Then the rest of the MSM piled on, braying for Pecker to be investigated himself (I know, I know).

Turns out, of course, that it was Sanchez' own brother that sent the info to the Enquirer, and not Trump. No retraction of that initial accusation, of course, to this day.

258 And of course US forces didn't come close to reciprocating the worst of Japanese atrocities, actually didn't do any of it - murdering POWs, torturing POWs, murdering and torturing non-combatants, etc. The glorious and unlawful summary execution/abetting of inmates' execution of guards at Dachau has no analogue in the Pacific theater, for that matter. I guess it must have been "racism' against blonde German, Ukrainian and other camp guards, right, Dower?

And of course we bombed the bejeesus out of German cities (actually the US part of the alliance tried to actually hit military targets, actually succeeded notwithstanding the very dubious stuff from the Strategic Bombing Survey, and paid in blood to do so, while the Brits took another approach).

It may be a mental pathology, far beyond even an ideology, that makes these people distort all history and facts to support their obsession with racism. The otherwise serious historians like Dower, and the airheaded blue-haired 24-yr old marching in a BLM march shouting idiotic racist nonsense, are actually part of the same phenomenon, just up-market and down-market.

If you want to go historical roots of punk, The Back from the Grave series of 60-early 70's garage bands that had punk attitudes is a great series of LPs release on Crypt Records. The Album covers themselves are hilarious.

IIRC, it was Rush that uncovered this a few years back, when the Twitter Mob tried to get all of his sponsors cancelled.
Because no major advertising agency would work with him (or most other conservative shows on radio or TV), That's why you will never see an auto or a big cell phone company advertising on most conservative radio shows.
Rush had to build up his own sponsors.
But after a couple dropped their advertising, Rush hired some tekkie investigators, and figured out there were about 10 or 20 people that controlled hundreds of bots that were attacking the sponsor corporate HQ's.
After this was uncovered, those sponsors tried to come back to Rush's show, and he told them to pound sand.

Another one is injury rates. Injury rates in Amazon facilities are a tad over twice the norm for the industry. Amazon, when they do actually respond to this, says something like, oh you're miscounting, and we love our workers so much we pretty much overcount, 'cause any time one gets so much as a little boo-boo on his pinky finger, we immediately rush in to help.

And the interesting thing is injury rates seem to increase with robots/automation. The more robots a facility uses, the higher the injury rates will be. These seems to indicate that robots and humans aren't mixing together too well.

whig, all Amazon does is raise the percentage they charge independent sellers to pick, pack, and ship the goods sold on the website.
I know of a few small manufacturers that this has happened to in the past few years. Something like 30% of the sale Amazon keeps, and one small company I am thinking about, it started maybe 5 or 6 years ago at 20%. Nothing had changed. And this product was so unique, Amazon couldn't copy it.

I know you are talking about Amazon branded goods, and I am talking about independent goods, but Amazon just takes more from the good products to cover for the losses they get from the crappy ones.

She might even be good looking enough to qualify for the flag girl squad at an SEC school. Not the cheerleaders or the dance group that wears the little sequined one-piece outfits (homina homina), but the girls that march with the band and throw the big flags around on the field.

369 Joe Mannix, I prefer a simpler more combative approach to bad analysis: it doesn't make sense, it doesn't comport with facts, it doesn't take account of reality.

Anything with an "-ism" on the end is likely utter nonsense and an excuse for dumb people to do bad analysis. And/or academic theoretical bubble-blowing (to use Marx's best phrase). ...
Posted by: rhomboid at March 31, 2021 04:25 PM (OTzUX)

Oh, to be sure - a combative stance is entirely appropriate when dealing with this kind of analysis. But I don't think Dower was stupid. Many like him are, and this is writ large in the academic journals. But Dower himself I think was much more nuanced and skillful than the run-of-the-mill academic pumping out nonsense. Most of them immerse their work in exotic ecclesiastical language to obfuscate the insanity that they're actually saying. Dower didn't. He was able to rework it into plain language with much greater skill than most of his contemporaries and as a result he was able to inflict mainstream damage in a way that most can't.

374 something is really wrong with how they're caring for Major btw

I think he's not just a "rescue dog" either - this makes no sense!

they are setting that poor dog up to fail over and over. he's 3! he has behavior issues. crate him, care for him, leash him outside! this isn't rocket science! the bidens are incapable of caring for so much as a DOG. their poor kids.
Posted by: BlackOrchid at March 31, 2021 04:24 PM (j9HX3)

the Biden's got their older German shepherd as a puppy from a rescue almost ten years ago. They then went back and got Major as a puppy from the same rescue, probably with the mistaken notion that an older dog needs a younger dog to keep it "young". Neither dog was trained as a working dog, which, IMO, is not a good thing for a working bred dog such as Shepherds. They need consistent handling, discipline, and a job. Someone on here, TonyPete? has had German Shepherds for years and has said the same thing.

375 In the 19th Century the giants of business were called robber barons and the libs targeted them as bad. They still teach how Rockefeller and Carnegie and Morgen etc were so bad. Now they just want to kiss the ring because these guys have them fooled into thinking they are an the same side.
