17 Based on how he has behaved over the past couple of years, I am a big DeSantis fan.

That said, I have a plea for DeSantis, from someone who does not live in Florida: don't run for president. Don't bow to popular pressure and throw your hat into the ring. Learn from Trump. A president is useless. The federal government is no place for an honorable man or a reformer. You and men like you are far more valuable and far more important right where you are: running states, going toe-to-toe with the Feds, and defending your people. Stay where you are, keep doing the right things, keep fighting, and build a sanctuary. Be the bulwark against which the federal ship will smash itself.

Consider the left's position on this instead - if you wanted to make people leery of taking an experimental "vaccine" I couldn't imagine a better way then this vaccine passport idea.
I get a flu shot regularly, because it was tested and we know the short and long term affects.

When the FedGov holds a gun to your head though to get a vaccine at the same time they import people without it and send them throughout the country though?

Weight and construction of the projectile dictate how much force is dumped into the target.

80 Jewells45,

So, to continue, powder charges in this country are measured in grains of powder. Bullets are also usually measured in grains.

The heavier the bullet, at a given cartridge, the less a given powder charge is and the slower the velocity of the bullet. Heavier bullets rely on momentum for penetration and killing power, light fast bullets rely on velocity to create hydrostatic shock and penetration.

114 So, to continue, powder charges in this country are measured in grains of powder. Bullets are also usually measured in grains.

The heavier the bullet, at a given cartridge, the less a given
powder charge is and the slower the velocity of the bullet. Heavier
bullets rely on momentum for penetration and killing power, light fast
bullets rely on velocity to create hydrostatic shock and penetration.

I tend to agree that the suburban wine moms should get what they voted for, good and hard. My main concern is the ridiculous over-representation of MtF trans in tech social platforms. They often worm themselves to the top "trust and safety" positions and rule them with an iron fist against normies and also try to groom new victims at the same time (recently saw a post from a Reddit mod bragging about all of the "Super Girl Juice" that he administers to underage kids unbeknownst to their parents). Just make the fines for breaking the "no passport" law so steep that the State of FL will be able to seize the company for unpaid fines if they refuse to comply, then sell them at auction to anybody that's willing to comply with the law.

188 > For .380, I personally favor between 90 and 100 grain full metal jacket, for the extra penetration you get.

This is probably going to upset some people, but the above comment is not up to date. FBI has actually done some good work (I know I know, boo FBI) in ballistics and for handgun caliber you want something that's going to penetrate 12" to 18" on average and expand as much as possible (while staying in one piece).

If you look at this chart, PMC 95gr Starfire behaves like a FMJ and has fantastic penetration, but its performance in this test is considered sub-optimal because it has so little expansion.

229 Jewells, at 56 grains for a .380 bullet, it is likely to be either a) solid copper or gilding metal, or b) some of the new poly type ammo. The monolithic copper bullets are lighter than the same amount of material in a copper jacketed lead bullet so they go faster. Some look like a twisted phillips screwdriver and they rely on the copper construction and very high velocity to penetrate deeply but unless one of those designed to fragment on impact, they do not expand and the existence of temporary hydrostatic damage from pistol bullets has not been fully supported by evidence. Likewise for the poly based ammo.
Ballistic gel tests have been pretty decent but little on the street evidence about the effectiveness in pistol bullets.
The old standard .380 bullets in hollowpoint did not expand well. At that point, many simply used full metal jacket bullets to get the needed penetration. Thus, when .380 pistols became popular again, .380 ammo makers stepped up their game.
Winchester and Hornady are good brands with consistent performance, Sig's is a new design with less track record. Some still like the older 102gr Golden Saber because of weight. https://tinyurl.com/3526f99n

True, the Left desperately wants a unitary Socialist state. But I think their "defund the police" rhetoric still shows their contradictory thinking and childishness. I can see how you CAN defund the police: massively liberalize gun laws and restrictions across the land. Encourage people to arm themselves; watch crime drop to a degree where you can realistically defund the police by cutting positions due to a drop in crime. But the Left will scream, scream and scream some more at the thought of people being armed.

308 Jewells, Firearms people tend to get a bit excited over different things. Some will argue for hours on penetration, temporary hydrostatic cavities, barrier performance, etc. on a cartridge. And then disagee about cartridge effectiveness.
The name brands of Hornady and Winchester provide generally acceptable performance in whatever handgun cartridge you are considering. The XTP bullet design is such that it allows some expansion at relatively modest speeds, the critical defense adds a poly ball cap to ensure that the hollow point does not get clogged and give consistent expansion in different situations. The Winchester PDX, is a time tested variant that has performed well but has a bit less penetration than the FBI test criteria. However, using that same criteria, .357 mag 125 grain hollowpoints also perform relatively poorly but did great in actual shots to stop by police.
The old fashion argument is be able to place your shots, and poke a hole, the bigger the hole the better. This is because most firearm stops occur because of blood loss as a one stop Central nervous system hit is rare unless at point blank range.
So I would value expansion a bit more heavily myself.

339 Sure. TX has ALWAYS been a +5% Republican state. Mr. Cruz was fairly close to that. Don't act like Beto Pancho only lost by 10,000 votes or so.

Cruz won by 16 points in 2012.

In 2018? It was Cruz 50.9% and O'Rourke 48.3%.

Abbott in 2018? 55.8% to 42.5%.

I can't think of another TX statewide election as close as the Cruz/O'Rourke one since the GOP took over the state in the 1990s. Has there been one?

When people started pointing out the enthusiasm gap, signaled by yard signs, for example, Cruz's surrogates just brushed it off. Maybe he'll get lucky and have a less appealing opponent next time, but I doubt Texas's demographics in general will be more favorable in future elections.

One, you have little understanding of TX politics. Two, you are one of those who just wants to sit around and whine about how TX is the next CA and how I should just shut up and give up. No. Mr. Abbott had a pipsqueak opponent in the Dallas County Sheriff who was INEPT. The only reason you should vote for her? I'M GAY. Damn skippy Mr. Abbott was going to romp to the polls. Mr. O'Rourke actually played it smart. He decided to campaign to be the third Senator from CA and raised massive out of state cash. I can barely remember who ran against Mr. Abbott - her name anyway - she had NO such organization. It made a difference.

But, whatever. Bitch all day about Mr. Cruz.

That would be "never." But realistically, Democrat politicians couldn't do that even if they wanted to, because the hard-left would throw a fit. Look at how targeted Feinstein just because she was civil to Senate Republicans. Even cheap-shotting Kavanaugh didn't protect her from the fallout.

- My Remington 510 Targetmaster shoots the old waxed lead 50 grain round nose nickel-quarter size groups at about 50 yards. But I never sensed that he was electable at the national level. I knew McCain and Romney were snakes and were gonna get curb stomped. I think Sen. Cruz is a little too "churchy" for some non-trivial proportion of the electorate, sadly.

Of course mass electoral fraud, voting fraud, has made this stuff moot going forward.

Before that. TX had a Republican governor in Bill Clements, 1979-1983 and 1987-1991. The first cracks truly began to show in the 1970s when Republicans began willing local Sheriff's races on law-and-order platforms. (Hmmm. It could be tried now I suspect in other places.) I'm trying to think of the first time a Republican presidential candidate won the state. It could be 1972 with Nixon.

366 Jewell, the most important thing is that any self defense ammunition must fire rock solid 100 percent reliability in your firearm. To do that, you have to fire enough cartridges to ensure reliability. In general, revolvers do not care about bullet profiles but semi autos often prefer one bullet profile over another. The Hornady XTP design is a truncated cone about like the Apollo Spacecraft gumdrop design. Other bullets are more elongated and rounded such as the Golden Saber. Some semi autos fire almost everything, some do not. That is a trial and error situation. Older designs often have problems with bullet profiles that are different than full metal jacket bullets so the best solution is to feed a semi auto what it likes rather than whatever ammo is "best". Reliability trumps all in self defense ammo.
On revolvers, as long as the ammo is in spec, it is okay whatever the bullet profile is. But, wad cutters or semi wadcutters are the most effective in lead, and a variety of profiles in jacketed hollowpoint work okay and the Federal 130 grain HST Micro is one of the most audicious hollowpoints of all and best performing out of small barrels.

Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Marcus Brasswang

And stay far far away from any Remington rimfire ammo, except for when you want to practice failure drills. My 22s will digest virtually anything I feed them with what I'd estimate as 95% plus reliability (and rotating the round for a refire gets the rest), but I'm lucky to get above 75% with Remington. And refires almost never work.

Their rimfire priming is shit.

Yep, accepted as identification.

372 You're confusing two distinct issues:

(1) whether people should like Cruz;

(2) whether people do like Cruz.

The second one translates to potential electability issues even if they ought to like him more than they do.

Cornyn gets slagged here all the time. And her deserves it. But you'll note he won comfortably in 2020, and the Dems did not even try and mount the same big out-of-state funded campaign against him that they did Cruz. Nor did Cornyn face a significant primary. Cruz has vulnerabilities in Texas that Cornyn doesn't, whether that's just or not. Over the next four years, we're likely to get more Dem voters here due to Texas's economy and possibly due to amnesty. If Dems can rustle up a decent candidate (and Beto wasn't that great really) raise a lot of out-of-state money again in 2024, Cruz could see a competitive race. Lots of variables. But none of that is "whining, screaming, tantrum throwing."

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at March 29, 2021 06:18 PM (H5knJ)

373 bear with symetrical balls, Cornyn is a democrat for all practial purposes. That's why the democrats don't mind him being elected.

374 17 Based on how he has behaved over the past couple of years, I am a big DeSantis fan.

=============

THIS

As President Trump has shown, there are a multitude of enemies in DC and precious few allies. And even some allies are fair weather friends. Let's hope DeSantis secures his state against all abuses by the Feds and let FL serve as a model for other states on how to fight back. Only with functioning state governments with the will to fight can we hope to bring us back from the brink.
