Gun Thread: 9th Circus Edition! [Weasel]

clown scaled.jpg

Howdy y'all, and welcome to the Gun Thread! Time to grab your favorite beverage, some snacks and your woobie, and settle in for our weekly discussion of our fav-o-rite thing, Guns 'n Shooting! Oh, I'd like to take this opportunity to officially welcome all of the new nics we've seen commenting and contributing content lately, and offer a bigly Gun Thread thank you!

To the rest of you reprobates, keep sending your ideas and range reports. This is your Gun Thread, and to a large extent you get to decide what we all see here. The GT email is included at the bottom of the thread every week.

With that, let's get to the content below, shall we?

Show of hands; who doesn't hate clowns? I mean, has anyone in the history of the universe not hated clowns? And who are the very worst clowns? The bottom of the clown barrel so to speak? Well it's not happy clowns, or sad clowns, or even scary clowns. The very worst clowns are the ones who make clownish decisions regarding how the rest of us will live. Of course, I'm talking about the clowns on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. These are the worst clowns. FYI - I am also no fan of Mimes, but we'll save them for another day.

Recently, in a 7 - 4 opinion, the Court essentially decided the 2nd Amendment does not extend outside the home. The case in question involved a resident of Hawaii who had been twice denied a carry license under the state's law requiring, among other things, applicants to demonstrate "the urgency or the need" and to be "engaged in the protection of life and property" in order to be licensed to openly carry a firearm in public. The same court has previously found that persons do not have the right to carry concealed weapons, either. Here is the opinion if you want to read it for yourself.

I'm not bringing this up to debate the legal theory or merits of the argument. The reason I am bringing this up is to highlight how our rights under the 2nd Amendment are constantly under attack, and how we need to put our money where our mouths are. Getting rilly, rilly, rilly mad on internet forums ain't enough. We need to support the organizations who are committed to protecting our rights. These are groups such as Gun Owners of America, Second Amendment Foundation, and yep, the National Rifle Association.

I have been somewhat critical of the NRA here in the past, but the fact remains they are by far the largest 2nd Amendment organization in the world. Say what you will about their current leadership and organizational practices, but they're the one with the membership numbers, plain and simple. They are the organization who the anti-2nd Amendment organizations have to fight. It sort of pains me to say this, because I believe organizations such as the Gun Owners of America and Second Amendment Foundation do great work, but at the end of the day the NRA remains the big daddy of gun rights organizations, and it is essential they remain strong and in the fight.

Questionable leadership antics aside for now, one of the biggest gripes about the NRA from its membership is their relentless fundraising campaign. Quite frankly that's a big part of the reason I became a Life Member many years ago. There is a simpler and more economical way to manage this however, sent to us by our pal Jim, Sunk New Dawn

How To NOT Get NRA Junk Mail, Nor Suffer Robocalls On Their Behalf

This works for NEW or EXISTING memberships.

Make a VOICE CALL (do not email) to the Membership Desk at the NRA. 1-800-672-3888.

When you connect with a rep, utter the following phrase EXACTLY as written: "I want you to code my membership as NO PROMOTIONS." Once the rep acknowledges this; "Please do so now, and CONFIRM back to me that you have coded my membership as NO PROMOTIONS...Thank you!"

They have a list of Membership Categories as a menu on their screen. "NO PROMOTIONS" is one such, is ONLY actuated when those EXACT WORDS are spoken to the Customer Service Agent. If you tell them you don't want junk mail, those words do not exist on their menu. Same as if you tell them you don't want robo-calls. Your plea will avail to precisely nothing.

So, now you can join the NRA without fear. And without junk mail. Please do join though, the strength in numbers is a REAL factor in these fights.

As Jim SND mentioned, a weakened NRA isn't going to do any of us any good, and membership numbers need to be seen going up and not down. It may be nice to see some of the more odious executive leadership squirm, but that's not going to help the fight. Think about it. I wholeheartedly recommend supporting the smaller organizations, but we need the NRA to succeed as well. If you disagree with the leadership, then take the time to let them know by email or call them at 1-800-672-3888. If you want to burn a stamp, the mailing address is:

National Rifle Association of America
11250 Waples Mill Road
Fairfax, VA 22030

So give it some thought. I realize it may be irksome, but consider supporting the NRA. The left is not going to stop the their attempts to infringe on our 2nd Amendment rights, and we need organizations of the NRA's size and organizational scale to maintain a cohesive and united resistance.

First up we have a question from our pal CBD.

The head of my local club, the guy who is always there and who has kept it running for about 40 years, bought an AutoMag III and the gunsmith who checked it out for him bent the hammer strut. He doesn't want to just bend it back because it may very well snap and he has been unsuccessful in finding a replacement. Obviously if he heats it he will be able to bend it back, but then what about re-tempering it? What temp, how long, and in what liquid? I am sure that someone out there knows how to do it, or could even fabricate a new one.

Next we have an awesome range and project report from our pal Glen The Deplorable Lurker

Thought I'd send through some pics of a project deplorable boy and I got up to last spring. Our lease range lacked pistol targets, so we built a couple to place out at the trap range. We had a blast building them, and the boy put his first rounds down range into them. More than anything, it was good father/son bonding time over manly activities. Deplorable boy got to put some rounds through momma's SR22, and I did a little blasting with the SD9VE to test the new Apex trigger and spring kit, the best $50 I've ever spent. He also spent a little time plinking away with his Red Ryder BB gun.
I think the most enjoyable part for him, though, is getting to ride in the front seat of the truck on the lease.

I love reports like this. What could be better than a father-son project and range time?

Next up, we have some thoughts on gun cleaning from our pal A.H. Lloyd

There are a lot of questions that can excite furious debate among gun owners, such as 9mm or .45 ACP or just how badly Glocks suck. But one topic that doesn't seem to do that is how often guns need cleaning. Everyone agrees it ought to happen, but the frequency is a little vague. I'm one of those few who does have a strong opinion on this topic and my answer is: guns need to be cleaned after each and every use. There are three normal reasons for this, plus one extra COVID one which I will get to at the end.

The first reason is that the more you clean, the easier it is. Conversely, if you go shooting with even a mildly dirty gun, the earlier carbon and fouling is now baked in and that much harder to extract. Revolvers tend to be more tolerant of filth than auto-loaders, but even they are subject to the same rule. In fact, I've found .38 Special to almost always be one of the dirtiest cartridges to clean up after. Do yourself a favor and stay on top of it.

I'm sure some will come back with the fact that Noted YouTube Experts have been quoted as saying they only clean after several hundred rounds. The thing is, these are often professional shooters, who know their weapons intimately. They also are using custom or high-grade ammunition, so they have an idea of exactly how much their weapon can take before having issues.

For everyone else, it's a lot less clear. Dirt and fouling may not by themselves cause a malfunction but they can be a factor. I had an experience quite recently of an experienced shooter using his trusted, but dirty, weapon with an unfamiliar kind of ammunition, and the combination of fouling and underpowered load gave him no end of trouble. Happily he was just doing some plinking at the range, so the consequences weren't serious. If you need your weapon between your "scheduled cleanings," you could be in for an unpleasant surprise. Why risk it?

The second reason is that when you clean, you're also doing a lot more. Cleaning gives you a chance to check the various mechanics of your weapon, such as springs, screws, pins and so on. Guess what? Screws work themselves loose and pins can break. Nice to notice that before it becomes a problem. Cleaning also involves lubrication, which can be very beneficial depending on the firearm.

This ties into the third reason which is that by cleaning your firearm, you get to really know it. This is especially important for new owners. Notice I didn't say "new shooters," because even experienced shooters can be caught off guard by the quirks of an unfamiliar firearm. Range time is good, dry-fire exercises helpful, but cleaning is essential to fully knowing how the thing works.

As I noted above, experienced shooters may bend this rule from time to time. I myself have made the decision to put off cleaning when a given gun saw very little use in a session and I knew I'd get it out again very soon. Another factor is what you use it for. If the gun is more of a novelty item rather than something you'll use for self-defense, than the rules are a little more lax.

If you just bought a used gun, you should absolutely clean it after every use because you have no idea how badly the former owner treated it. Mud, gunk, dirt - sometimes I think people sell guns just so they don't have to clean them. You also may contend with worn springs, bent pins and other items that maybe the online auction or examination at the gun store couldn't show you.

So those are the normal reasons to clean guns early and often, but the new COVID one is that ammo is insane right now, and you may be reduced to buying something in a plain brown box from a manufacturer you never heard of. Guess what? Some of that stuff can be corrosive and if you don't clean it out right away, you will mess up your barrel.

Erudite Book Thread Morons who read Evelyn Waugh, but I repeat myself, know from his wartime recollections that the British used really nasty stuff in both world wars and poured hot water down their barrels to wash out the residue. Here in the US, corrosive ammunition used to be quite rare, but in the present shortage every forgotten Soviet storage bin is being thrown open and the contents placed on the market. In fact, I'm not convinced that we aren't getting ammunition that was slated for destruction.

Even if the ammunition isn't corrosive, you may have no idea how it will perform. Again, the guy whose gun gave him grief has been shooting for decades, and therefore was casual about cleaning. It took one box of Mystery Ammo to ruin his shooting experience with constant failures to cycle.

Do yourself a favor: keep it clean. It really doesn't take that much time and the benefits absolutely outweigh the risks.

A.H. Lloyd makes excellent points. How about you all? Do you clean after every use?

Next, our pal WTM shares a range and police activity report!

It's been a rough week for shooters in these latitudes. Lots of rain and then lots of wind. The range wasn't too wet yesterday, but, boy, was it windy. So much for tweaking the sights on my .223 and .22LR. I fired a few rounds and called it quits. Then to the pistol range.

The big news was that there had been a break-in the day before in the parking lot adjacent to the firing lines. This parking lot is about 300' long and parallels the pistol and rifle ranges. Here is how it is arranged. looking at the pistol range on the far west end.

wtm 3 032821 scaled.jpg

One of the RSO's with whom I have become chummy told me that he had seen a vehicle slowly going up and down behind those parked, evidently looking for someone or something. He saw it come to a stop but didn't think anything of it until a woman, who had been shooting a rifle, went to her car to change firearms and found that the driver's window had been shattered, the door unlocked, and her purse, which had been left on the passenger seat, was missing.

This range is in a rural area, so the Harris County Sheriff's Department was called. The deputy, upon arriving, asked the woman what all she had done prior to coming to the range, and her last stop beforehand had been at an ATM, where she made a large withdrawal. He stopped her there, stating that she had been marked at the bank and had simply been followed to the range. He said there was an organized gang in Houston doing this and that it took them less than 10 seconds to break in, grab her purse, and leave. She stated that she had left her purse on the seat since, and I quote, "I thought it would be safe with so many people with guns nearby". Today, she is no doubt sadder but wiser. To the lady morons reading this: Please don't make the same mistake. Trust no one.

Otherwise, I had an uneventful day, other than finding about 100 rounds of .300 Win Mag, .270, .30-06, and .308 brass in the trash. I also found this ammo box, which illustrates just how bad things have become in this age of Defund the Police and ongoing Dim threats to grab guns. Pretty ordinary, huh? Wait until you see the end flap.

wtm 1 032821 scaled.jpg

Wait for it.... Waaaait for it...!

wtm 2 032821 scaled.jpg
Holy Shit! - Weasel

That's right - over $100 with tax for a box of .38 Special. The previous champion had been a box of 20 .300 Win Mag with a $55 price tag. I have never been so glad that I reload in my life, and now look fondly at my jug of 1000 .38+P that I reloaded for about $0.15 each. Here it be. Good luck to all, and keep locked and loaded.

wtm 4 032821 scaled.jpg

Ho-Lee-Shit!! Somebody really wanted that box of .38 Special. Unreal. Please, people, assuming the ammo situation returns to normal, please, please, please make sure you have what you need ammo-wise to ride out the next 'thing'.

Next we have a question from our pal tbodie which I wasn't able to answer, so I thought I'd ask for your help.

I am considering buying a pistol caliber carbine (PCC) for Mrs. tbodie for home defense. I looked around the internet and did not find any useful information. Do you experience with / know of any good resources for researching PCC's?

How about it? Any suggestions?

Next up, our pal Chris from Delaware reports he had a very productive month!

Had 3 weekends in a row with shooting. First. took a young friend to the range to get him a bit of practice.

The next weekend was an annual camping/shooting weekend in central Virginia. The old adage of "if it ain't raining, you ain't training" was unfortunately proven. Wet red clay trails with wet leaves for a topping yields interesting driving, especially on off camber sections. My young friend had a chance to play at various ranges out to 200 yards and practice some reloading drills. I introduced the owner of the property to the joys of cap 'n ball revolvers with a brass frame Remington replica and a Walker. A little bit of Hawken/roundball fun as well.

The third weekend was a Glock match and doing 6 seconds on the knockdown plates felt pretty good. Watching one fellow do it in 3 flat was humbling. Watching him get trounced by a 2.8 second run was more humbling.

Lucked into some Hornady cowboy slugs at the local Cabela's. Lucked into a good trade for some large pistol primers. Now all I need is a supply of powder and the cowboy guns will remain fed.

Sounds like a great month, Chris in Delaware!

You have to love South Carolina. Well, maybe not the fact that the liquor stores close at 7 pm - this is some sort of barbarism. But at a friend's house, they have an earthen dam for the pond that makes a dandy backstop. Just kind of shooting to shoot, not really for skill improvement. 31 Range report, part 1: I sold a gun to a buddy of mine, and, apparently, it didn't work. Which irritated me to no end, because I'd shot it in a match, cleaned it, and put it away for sale. I sold the gun, buddy said, "hey, seems to have an issue."

"Say what?"

We got together at the range, I've got far more gun experience than my buddy, and, yep, gun no longer works.

Sigh. So, I will be refunding full purchase price and transfer fees and invite him to keep the weapon, because there is no way I am going to pay to transfer a non functioning weapon back to me. But, I feel fortunate it's a friend, because if I'd have sold a defective gun to Joe Anonymous, well, that would have really gone badly.

32 Range fun 2/x

We shot a 10/22 with lots of pew pew (had a BX25 mag) , and a Ruger 22 pistol that decided that single shot was the mode to be in. That wasn't as much fun as a pocket knife was necessary as an auxiliary extractor. They had a Navy .35 automatic rifle but they didn't have any ammo for it. Interesting piece to look at. 35 Tbodie,

Good luck with a PCC, my first point for you to ponder is "what caliber is the pistol we use?"

The reason I bring this up is many semi-auto PCCs have some degree of magazine interchangeability with a pistol of the same caliber. Technically a 16" barreled lever rifle is a PCC, but most people in the modern era mean semi-auto. I am looking for a Ruger PC Carbine, ideally in the gen 2 housing in 9mm.

The reason I chose this weapon is it breaks down, shares chambering with wife's ruger security 9, and is handy and accurate to a fault.

We rented one and waited to buy so instead of paying 495 as we should have we will likely *if* we can find one pay 685.

Democrats and inflation literally suck.

36 Range fun 3/3

Shot the Sig 226, and a Bushmaster (pre-Remington) AR15. And then first shots from the Mossberg .308 Scout Rifle. That is a BOOMstick! My experience with .308 was with an M14 some number of years ago. The M14 has some amount of heft on the Scout - the carbine length polymer stock rifle weighs about what an AR15 does ~ 7 lbs. It does have significantly more recoil. But it will put bullets where you point it, and that is the main thing. The stock 10 round mag seems like a LOT of ammo. It will take M1A1 and AR10 mags so you can go 20 or 30 if you want to. That would make it weigh a lot more, too.

42 Range Report: Part two, mistakes learned from: I shot a high power match yesterday, and, while my scores are best ignored, I managed to overcome previous mistakes I'd made. I even went so far as to grab my ballistics chart for my K31 and use the information contained within to get my sighter shot in the black, 1 more MOA adjustment, and, I'm golden.

Off-hand didn't go well, other than I managed to do a decent job of trigger control

Sitting and prone rapid fire went well, and, I learned to go with a mag change over using the Swiss reloading device.

Prone slow fire was good, but, it's amazing how fast 22 minutes for 22 shots can go by. Fun day all the way around.

Maybe there are some chemistry types here that can clarify.

The reason water was used back in the day, salt or salts as a class, the corrosive residue of older ammo are not dissolved, nor neutralized by oil. The residues will happily corrode barrel steel under a thick layer of oil or grease.

49 My backordered 105gn .243 came in to stock so when it arrives, I'll be able to finally shoot the 2 new rifles I built around Christmas. I've shot 50 rounds out of each but have been waiting on bullets since Nov. Not only that but Midway had some Starline Grendel cases in stock momentarily so I got to do my very first brass re-sizing project. I already had 100 Hornady 6MM ARC cases so I have 200 to start with.

When the burning times come, chances are most of the antifa/blm cadavers will have glocks on them. so lots of usable spare parts to pick off of the cadavers. I doubt many are going to have CZ Shadows or Beretta 92s on them. Too hard to hold sideways.

These days, I think things can go from zero to sporty within a matter of hours, at which point, one may not have the luxury of cleaning when it suits.

59 When I went to Jungle School the approved method of cleaning was to take your M16 into the shower with you and take off the handguards because there was going to be mud in there and break it open on the front hinge pin, getting as much of the solids out as possible.

Dry it as much as possible with rags then take the upper and the buffer assy and put it in a 55 gallon drum cut down lengthwise. I forget what the solvent was that was in there - I am thinking it was kerosene, but maybe it was acetone.

Let that soak for a few minutes, then take it over and commence to cleaning it as you would normally.

I'm kinda HAPPY 'bout that lawsuit actually, as it's kicked LaPissant in the 'nads hard enough to prompt a coming re-incorporation OUT of N.Y. and IN to Texas.

Now though, we need a 10 million member NRA, just to renew The Fear. Frankly, the basic membership is cheap enough, I'd be happy to pay for one or two, just to bump up the numbers. Just think, if all 5 million current members did so, the 10 million goal could be smashed in weeks, not years. Just gotta find those 1 or 2 willing to sign-on.

Well that's kind of the point though, and important to understand. With corrosive ammunition (or blackpowder firearms), it isn't "good" to use water, it is essential; as nothing except water will dissolve salt. It isn't the same as the salt we use on food, but it's a salt just the same.

It's my understanding it's pretty common, many if not most used muzzleloading firearms on the market are damaged because of this. The owners were maybe familiar with modern smokeless ammunition and thought swabbing the barrel out a few times with Hoppes would be good to go.

107 tbodie,

My first question is why do you want a rifle instead of a shotgun? I assume household distances are typical and you don't require a rifle's range.

My choice would be one in 357 magnum but loaded with 38 specials or in 44 magnum loaded with 44 specials. A lever action can be worked fast and carbine lengths are common.

I have the carbine version, my buddy's got the pistol version. In CA, the pistol is nearly impossible to find (off roster). I got my carbine off roster, but the FFL STILL had to fix the stock - although he didn't pin my magazines, so I have proper full capacity mags. Seriously, how does a folding stock suddenly make a gun sooper scary deadly? It's still too damn big to hid in your pocket. Stupid state.

Anyway, awesome little gun, I'm definitely a CZ fan. Fully expect Biden is going to write an EO banning imports, so hopefully the Colt purchase will help circumvent some of that.

Personally, the ergonomics don't work for me, the factory sights suck, and the trigger sucks worse. The sights are eminently fixable, and the trigger can be breathed upon in various ways to get it to acceptable, so if the ergos work for you, the rest is as fixable as you'd like it to be.

In .40 or 10mm, the unsupported chambers have been known to cause issues, nicknamed "ka-booms". In general, it's unpleasant to be holding one that ka-booms. This can be fixed with aftermarket barrels.

116 When we did Civil War reenacting using real black powder I would clean everything when we got home after the event with a mix of 50/50 scalding water and murphy's oil soap. Take everything apart and run a swab through the barrel at least 10-15 times until it came out clean.

If you did not use hot water you would leave fouling in the barrel and it would become a rusted mess. The oil soap would leave a smooth clean rust free residue.

Well if mag interchangeability is not a top priority you could go with either a Kel-Tec that takes glock mags or the PC Carbine with the glock mag adapter.

The 30(32?) round glock mags would be the budget solution to meet your stated goals so you need a platform that supports them.

https://tinyurl.com/y22rs4kj

Above is a selection, I know the Ruger PC Carbine or the Kel-Tec 2000 can meet your needs if you can find 'em.

The Kel-Tec should be less expensive.

Cheap, good fun and great training when considering full auto firearms. I get about 6 mags out of a CO2 dual set up. 25 BB's per mag. AR type controls and sights. Check one out if you see one while out and about.

My first question is why do you want a rifle instead of a shotgun? I assume household distances are typical and you don't require a rifle's range.

I have a shot gun but wanted something that will hold more rounds and less kick. Lower felt recoil is another reason for getting the carbine.

And we have a little elbow room in our neighborhood so 50 yard shots are possible.

It's interesting to note that in countries where the Communists took over, there were still uprisings. East Germany (1953), Hungary (1956), Czechoslovakia (196, Poland (1980), Romania (1989) and even in China (1989).

In Hungary and Romania, the army joined the rebels, and in the former case the Red Army was needed.

My point is that people who bring this up are jumping to the end of the story and ignoring the important plot points that happen before. See also: Spain, 1936. There are books about it.

176 How much ammo should one have? Interesting. I have 850 rounds of 9mm and I do not think that is enough. I can easily go through 150 rounds at the range so that would last me only 5 trips to the range.
Because of the shortage I have been easing up when at the range. I bring 50 rounds with me and I buy 50 rounds from the range. I get an hour and just take it nice and easy and run through drills until I am empty.
For me I would like to maintain at least 2k rounds of 9mm and about 300 rounds of .308. But with the laws in NYC I cannot have that much ammo at home. (I keep the bulk at my brothers house in another State).

I have heard the strategy at Academy is to be there before they open and be ready for a line. You have to be pretty sweet to find out when the truck arrives, and even then, shipping is so iffy these days, the truck may not even have a schedule.

My most successful strategy has been checking the links bonhomme posts here. Got me stocked on 9mm a while back at $0.50 a round.

Only handguns I will be keeping are my Browning Hi-Powers, my 1911 and Webley revolvers. They may be needed as things progress. Keeping the rifles though...some lucky bastard will get them when I am dead and gone.

Come to find out, he's retired and moved down to Ozona from CO because it's just cheaper to live down there. So during the hour and a half that we were on the phone we started comparing arsenals. I mentioned that two old 70's hippies are now the most heavily armed folks I know. I got to thinking, I must have close to 8,000 rounds of ammo in three different calibers. Imagine that.

188 I'm here.As some of you may be aware, I went to my first gun show on Saturday with Iris and met Jesse and Hrothgar there. I have to say it was a bit intimidating at first as there were very few women there and a lot of the vendors were selling antique guns. I was hoping to handle some guns to get a feel for what I wanted to buy and on that front scored big time. There were a few vendors with new guns including one seller who had a bunch of 22 rifles. Turned out, he had exactly the one I was interested in, a Rossi 18" Gallery with a wood stock. I picked it up and it was like it was made for me. My most successful day at the rrange was shooting a similar pump action. Problem was I did not have two forms of ID so could not purchase it but I looked it up when I got home and MSRP was the same on the Rossi site so if I can;t find it in MD, I can get this seller to ship to MD gun shop and I can pick it up.We were all able to have dinner together in Manassas, kind of a micro mome.It was really fun and it was great to have Jesse to offer advice. I know there are more shows in the coming weeks so maybe we can do more of this.

I'm not disagreeing with you in the slightest here, Ruben. That's where the NO PROMOTIONS comes in. It takes the racket out of the equation, for every member that makes it so.

And no, the NRA doesn't have to be terribly effective in court. SAF is better at that. Nor at lobbying Congress. What they DO have to be good at, is pointing to that 5 million membership stat, then point at Congress, and make the "lookin' at you" fingers sign. Figuratively speaking, of course. The intristic value of the NRA *is* the huge membership. The Board, as constituted at present, is not feel free to kiss MY ass, as they're pre-occupied in kissing Lapierre's.

Walfart isn't selling pistol ammo anymore.
My closest Cabela's tells me that they'll order 50 cases of everything and will maybe get 5 boxes total.

If something does come in that's useful, there's usually a line ready to buy it up.
They put a four box limit on everything just to try and keep people happy.

The Walmart here has quit ordering ammo they don't want the hassle. The gun case has a few shotguns and one bolt action rifle that I think is .22 lr.

The Academy Sports in Sherman gets it's truck on Sunday morning at 0400 and if you are not in line by 0900 you are not going to get any ammo when they open at 10. Ammo seek dot com is your friend.

249 The CX4 had the absolute worst trigger and sights of any firearm I've ever had the displeasure to shoot. The basic ergonomics are good but the entire design is klunky. It doesn't lend itself to the intuitive AR type control. Overall, I see it as a fail. It shoots. It can occasionally be picky about ammo and should go the way of the dodos. YMMV

258 Doing a bit of research on CBD's pal's Automag problem. It appears that the hammer strut is made out of mild steel which means I would have a new one fabricated rather than trying to fix the old one. Without knowing the exact steel alloy used, it gets a little tricky on heat treatment.

So go to a machinist used to fabricating small parts like a tool and die man. Let him use the original as a pattern before you try to fix it. Have several made as the setup is the same for one as for several, sell the excess on the Automag forum as one other guy apparently did.

Gunsmiths, if you have an old timey one, can also fabricate but a lot of recent 'gunsmiths' are basically parts switchers.

This is not really something that I would have anyone other than a skilled machinist or a old timey gunsmith handle. It is a critical part that if made incorrectly could result in the gun firing when it shouldn't. Pay the freight and do it right.

259 Mongo, Pawn in Game of Life - Rule of thumb - 1000 rds per long gun, 500 rds per hand gun as "stock" not including what you are shooting. Not such an adequate rule now. Giggles and I are aiming at 3000 rds/long gun and 1500 for hand gun. And we practice standardization of calibers. 9mm, 45, 380, 30-06, 223/5.56, 308, 7.62×39mm. Those are the prime calibers for stock.

275 For new guy with the 9mm, you do not 'need' 1000 rounds or greater. What you need is trigger time more than a bunch of rounds accumulated at very high prices. 9mm will come down. What you do is buy 50-100 rounds at a time, fire it, save the brass, repeat, fire it, save the brass, at a certain point, you will have enough brass to reload your range ammo and can get started reloading at the basic level. You can get started reloading 9mm basically for the cost of the dies, a powder measure, even a Lee Scoop measure is fine, and a hand press or a single stage press. All would come in, along with primers and powder, for about $150-200.

By that time, primers should be available and you will have quite a bit of trigger time rather than hoarded ammunition.

I reload 9mm when there is a shortage and it gets crazy. When prices return to semi normal, I quit reloading 9mm and buy commercially as I reload for a number of cartridges that are expensive even in normal times and at a certain point, my time is worth more than my money spent on range blaster ammo.

It depends on your proficiency and how often you practice. If you use 50 rounds per session (loading only 5 rounds per magazine, to maximize load/reload drills), you have a six-week supply of weekly practices. You can stretch that to every other week, but if you go too far, you're going to lose any progress in proficiency.

304 281, Ben Had, Thanks, I have Howe's excellent gunsmithing manuals one and two which goes into extensive detail on heat treatment, bluing, etc. The guy worked as a consultant at Springfield Armory pre WWII and put out his compendium shortly afterwards.
One of the issues is that if it is plain carbon soft steel, your advice is excellent. When the alloy includes nickel and chromium, it gets wonky. I got interested in the subject of heat treatments because I collect very old military bolt actions where heat treatment was more an art than a science so I read up extensively on each of the different bolt actions that I collected and then about the manufacturing and construction of them. The US stuff is available in dry U.S. Army Ordnance reports. Foreign stuff is a bit tricky but collectors from different countries have banded together to scour foreign sources and translate it for English speakers. The arms collection community has lost several giants in things likes Mausers, French and Swiss arms, and US arms recently. The forums, though, have saved the knowledge. FWIW,Brownell's sells a rough temperature gauge material called Tempilac which changes colors based on temp.

308 Apologies if already addressed, but cleaning up after corrosive ammo* - for bolt-action rifles, anyway - is not a big deal. It's basically just - pour boiling water down the bore, followed by regular cleaning.

I wouldn't use corrosive in a semi-auto, as cleaning might be much more involved.

For those in dry places like SoCal, AZ and NV desert areas, it's even less of a big deal, in that there's no rush. In humid environments, probably behooves one to do the flush/clean as soon as practical after shooting.

* I believe the only thing that is "corrosive" about such ammo is that salts from the primers are hydro-philic, i.e. attract water - this is what your dissolving/washing away with the boiled water

Absolutely! Once you've become proficient, maintaining it is a lot easier. If one is proficient, going to bi-weekly, tri-weekly or even monthly sessions can make sense of ammo is short.

If you have years of experience with a given weapon, you don't need to shoot it that often. The muscle memory is there. The problem for our new gun owners is building that muscle memory.

321 Hiked up into the woods a bit yesterday, a nice day, cloudy and cool, no rain for a change.

I brought along a bag of tangerines that were going bad, they're about an 1 1/2" or so. Nice small target, plus if you hit them right, they blow up nicely.

Brought my XD45, testing out the 200 grain hardball .45 from Freedom Muntions. Gun shot a bit high, unlike the G21 and SR1911 the week before, which shot low with that load. Gun seemed to like the load fine, good to know.

Also did some plinking with the G44 in .22. Only about 100 rounds total. They went fast. I hope someday ammo gets cheap enough that my entertainment doesn't cost $60 or more for 100 mixed rounds. Good times.

324 FWIW, on the legal front, NY's Pistol and Rifle Association v. Corlett cert petition before Scotus March 26th Conference. It is exactly on point and probably why the 9th circuit released the opinion when it did. It deals with whether the 2a covers carry outside of the home. The words bear arms were more or less ignored by the 9th's majority opinion which is an explicit violation of both textualism and originalism as each word in an Amendment has meaning which supercedes the rancid and incorrect historical analysis by the 9th. They went cherrypicking in English common law and laughably used Hawaiian Kingdom precedent arguing that treaty language overcomes the 2a which is a violation of hierarchy of laws.

Up until just a few years ago, I could still disassemble and reassemble an M-16 in my head. I was profoundly sad to realize that i had lost some of the steps. But i bet i could reacquire it pretty quickly were I to finally be able to purchase an AR-15.

334 Speaking of the XD...one of the reasons I love the XD9 and XD45 is that they run well when dirty. The pistol design is very tolerate of carbon, dirt, etc in the feeding chamber. I haven't torture tested it, but I have and do go hundreds of rounds between cleanings, maybe more.

Same with the Glock. The reasons I like them are their tolerance for running even when uncleaned. And when you do want to clean them, it's far easier than, say, my CZ 75.

I do expect any gun I carry to meet that standard. Any gun that requires constant cleaning is a range toy, only. POSSIBLY excepting .22 LR, all of them seem to get dirty fast and need a good cleaning ever 200 rounds or so.

342 326 Thanks Ben Had,
I have a pretty well stocked workshop for working on firearms but certain things I prefer to have specialists do either because they have the expensive equipment like a forge, have a tig welder, lathe, or mill. For a hobby, I cannot justify any of those nor do I want particularly to be a gunsmith for hire.

Heat treatment is one of those specialty things as is fine parts manufacture. I can weld, braze, etc. but am sloppy at it along with tinsmithing, etc. as I grew up a farm boy and my school had an award winning shop program.

Specialists with the right equipment like a TIG welder are what I would use if I needed welding, a machinist if I need parts fabrication, and I have a gunsmith shop with three generations of gunsmiths that does everything from smokepoles (blackpowder antiques) to modern. They are slow but good.

I know enough to know my limitations.

344 Weasel, thanks as always for gubz!

On the lead topic, cleaning, I think the correct answer will vary by individual, firearm, and circumstance. That is, there is no correct answer.

Cleaning after every shooting session is one approach, and if done with due care, harmless.

My approach varies quite a bit. For my XD9, or CZ-83, or 1911, a bore-snaking and wipe-down is the norm. Then, every so often, a more thorough cleaning, in the case of the 1911, full disassembly and cleaning (other 2 are too annoying for that, plus don't require it).

For rifles, similar. More deliberate wipe-down and a thorough bore cleaning for the Garands and M1 carbines. Full disassembly for the Garands - minimized, as "lock-up" with the stock is degraded over time by removing it (varies a lot, but the less you do it, less chance of loosening the lock-up).

Revolvers, because I use dirty ammo (my own - at least the lead-bullet varieties, where the lube is a major culprit), a fairly thorough cleaning after any significant use. Rimfire (Single Six, and an M&P-22 semi, just a bore-snaking and a wipe-down for the Ruger, for the bluing).

345 @ tbodie

PCCs. The Ruger PC Carbines are good, if heavy.

I like my Kel Tec Sub-2000, it can be carried in my backpack and is easy to use out to 100 yards. Also takes Glock magazines, so reliable 30 round magazines are available.

I also have a Just Right carbine in .45 ACP, works fine, it's fairly AR-style.

A good lever action in .357 or .44 is a good option too. I like Rossi and Winchesters.

Palmetto state also makes good PCCs, I have one of their 9mms and it also takes the same Glock 17 mags.

i said unkind things then, and as i drove by. dumb shit actually came all the way across the light to accost me in the street, to no avail.

the funny part is that they then went into the store i had just left. their gun smith, who could undoubtedly either fix or replace the hammer strut, had seen the whole thing, as he was fixing to leave. he went back inside, told the owner, who also checked the video, which caught much of the action for posterity.

they were told to leave, and not come back... and will likely never know why.

369 I got here late; but, I'll answer tbodie's question even if you've read it before...

I have a Rossi m92 (lever action in SS), it handles .38 and .357 ammo with nary an issue (well you can empty the tube fed mag rather quickly). .38 cal barely kicks, you can't say that about the .357 cal.

I also have a Kel-tek Sub 2000 in 9mm, it handles the 9mm nicely. It came with a 17 round mag and I purchased 2 27 round mags. It's a lot of fun at the range.
I carry it in a 'camel-bak' type water bag and you can't tell it's there unless you know it's there.

I think the Kel-tek would be better for home defense due to its larger capacity coupled with its over-all length of 30.5", folded it is only 16.25".

371 Mister Scott - at one duty day at the range, a guy had a Ruger PC9, with a cheap red-dot on it (the PC version with the heat shield that kind of makes it look like a tricked-out PPsh-41).

I had my 10-inch steel plate hanging at the foot of the berm*, 100 yds away.

Took the rifle, plinked away, boom-ding, boom-ding, boom-ding - as you say, I could've just kept shooting and hitting the plate, effortlessly. First time I'd touched on of those carbines, nearly the first time I'd looked through a red-dot sight.

Conclusion: these 9mm carbines are perhaps the easiest existing guns to shoot accurately. I strongly advise anyone asking for a good starter gun, or easy-to-shoot gun for home defense for non-shooters, to try them out. I've shot the CZ Scorpion (?) also, same-same, very easy and natural to shoot.

Some guy did a torture test with an XD9 that ran 50K rounds or something without problems. And his jeans didn't exist until decades later in the 20th century. I think MeTV did something on all that.

I think it worked out though. The energy and penetration of the 30-06, in it's various incarnations as far as projectile goes, proved very handy in WWII combat.

You can tell which Spanish pistols saw active service in their civil war just by looking at them.

If they are clean and shiny, nope. The ones that have pitting, worn finish, yep.

You can also go be serial number, but the visual method is faster.

393
Lucas McCain's rifle was a (modified) Winchester 1892, that being the year it was first made. The series clearly established itself as starting in 1881.

The rifles used were indeed real Winchester 1892s, provided by the fabled Stembridge Gun Rentals, whichis/was the main supplier of prop guns for Hollywood.

They used two 1892s, but those were too valuable to risk damaging. So they had stunt rifles so to speak, which they used for the action shots when it was dropped or banged around. There were knockoffs of the 1892.

395 I always clean first, then decap. I've never had an issue with primer pockets - but I'm mostly talking pistol calibers. 30 carbine included in that, functionally.

30 carbine and 9mm get a second cleaning (brief, in clean media) to remove lube, after decapping.

Only reload one bottle-neck caliber so far, 30-06, but still, no issue with dirty primer pockets. HXP milsurp, so after first firing I have to swage out the stab crimps in the pocket, which may have accounted for no pocket issues. But I'm on 2nd reloading of some cases, and no dirty pocket issues. Primers seat just fine (I do it on turret press, in single-stage mode - and this primer process gets a lot more close attention and quality checks than the pistol calibers).

401 @346 whig-Good advice to Ben had. Making parts for firearms can be tricky. For smiths it can open a can of worms concerning liability or quite simply fear of fabricating making something that can potentially fail God forbid, and decline for ethical reasons. Some cases a smith will go for it, usually with collectors that do not fire the gun often or guys that use oddball guns for competition/target shooting. In a pinch parts can be made in CBD's friends case by a competent gsmith. The part can be checked usually with a file for any surface/case hardening. To have an accurate assessment for what type of metal you can send it out to have it tested. there are places that can check for accurate surface hardened depth(vickers or knoop test) and composition test (Rockwell test). A good smith/machinist (should be one and the same) should be able to fabricate the exact piece and send it out to be surface hardened if needed. There are places that can do this as more modern processes exist. On a piece that small processes other than heating exist that are much better and preferred.

405 And with the concurrence of the Horde, my latest round of 30-06 brass prep has been slimmed down - I gauge every case, and if it's within length specs, don't trim it. This could greatly reduce the time to process. I wasn't tracking for this, but my recollection is that the first firing of this HXP produced much more "brass flow", requiring trimming (I trimmed 100% of them, without considering *not* doing so) than the 2nd firing. Does that make sense?

Posted by: rhomboid at March 28, 2021 09:04 PM (OTzUX)

406 PCC for home defense? Skip it. Go with a lightweight 16" AR carbine in .223/5.56. Too many issues with mags and reliability for me to dabble with something that might malf. On the other hand, the AR carbine in .223/5.56 is pretty much a well-worn path at this point. KR was what 3 for 4 under active assault from every angle with multiple assailants? Yes, even in an apartment. If it concerns you, get a shotgun instead.
I have two lightweight carbines. One a BM carbon 15 which is stupid light, and another home-build, based on the same idea with a pencil barrel, but with alloy upper and lower receiver. They are both the penultimate carry a lot, fire very little, but have adequate power for SD rifles.

411 So in WA politics and the current session, it looks like the magazine limit law is dead, because even those legislators who are on the fence with gun grabbing they would have lots of explainin' to do to their Glock owning neighbors.
But the ban on open carry when there is a group of people is still alive. This came about because last year, a bunch of gun supporters met in Olympia with AR's and some even had *gasp* Trump signs. Just because nobody broke any laws is no reason not to ban them, or so the thinking goes.
How quickly they forget that last summer's new Nation, the Nation of Chaz, had multiple murders, and documented cases of people stopping crimes in action, because they open carried.
Open carry is legal in WA, 'cepting bars, courtrooms, and schools, and a few others. And concealed carry is ok for anyone not a felon and over 21. Just apply, take pic and prints, and pay your $58. For now.
Still, if you are in WA, sending an email to your local reps is easy and only takes a few minutes. Go to waguns.org and look under 2A for specific wording that you can make your own.
Or do nothing and be surprised when these leaches are knocking at your door some day.

424 Am certainly agreed on cleaning after each shoot. You never know what you find. After one shoot with my super-reliable Sig P938, what did I find but a missing recoil spring guide rod! Turns out it's somewhat known that the guide rod can unscrew with usage and eventually flies out. I wouldn't have known but for cleaning after that shoot. (There's a 3d party one piece guide rod that is my replacement, or Sig will send you a two-piece replacement).

P.S. Don't forget your state gun rights orgs, like Texas State Rifle Association. Our state legislatures may turn out to be critical in these times...

Decap first using Lee Universal Decapping Die. Keeps the and primer lead out of my cleaning and allows cleaning (SS pins wet tumble) to clean the primer pocket, which is one of those steps that I loathe.

426 BTW, if people are interested in how gunsmithing is done which is useful when talking technical with people, James V. Howe's Professional Gunsmithing Volumes 1 and 2 is superb. Just in bluing formulas, he has about 40-50 recipes listed which can help in historical arms id.

Patrick Sweeney, a former gunsmith, handles a lot of the later gunsmithing books, including a good series on the AR. Kevin Miramatsu also has some good books out.

428 Fairly certain the gunsmith who bent the AMT AutoMag III hammer strut misassembled the gun and then attempted to cock the hammer.

The shape of the bend and the color of the part says this hammer strut was made from drawing quality sheet steel which was then blued. This can be confirmed with a Rockwell 'B' scale hardness test. As long as the strut is under 80 Rockwell 'B', it will bend back cold without any problem. A quick fixture which uses a steel dowel through the hole is the way to go.

My early AutoMag III has a stainless steel hammer strut. I think stainless was used for the early pistols' struts. At some point AMT or one of its successor corporations must have changed over to carbon steel for economic reasons.

An important note: Amateur gunsmiths and itchy owners frequently lose the barrel delay plunger and barrel delay plunger spring which goes into the rear of the recoil spring rod. They just fall out and disappear into carpeting below. The pistol should not be fired out without these two parts properly installed.

Ran to a Sportco and found 4 boxes of 1000k rounds of 223 left on a pallet and snatched them up. Sold one to a friend. Compared to nowadays prices I am quite happy for that panic.

465 4, I would take a look at the new lee sized decapping pins as they are great for range brass--they are sized for the brass that you will be decapping and fit just fine in the universal decapping die. Since those were cheap enough, I bought the bodies and the different sized decapping pins from Lee for my Lee APP press. That press basically allowed me to eliminate about a two year backlog in decapping and subsequently cleaning range brass in less than a couple of days with a couple of hours per day. I also am using the Lee pocket swaging on the APP press which I am a bit less impressed with. The RCBS pocket swager does a better job on military rifle brass. The Lee gives minimum clearances on 5.56 military brass and haven't tried it on .30 caliber military brass.

Posted by: Weasel at March 28, 2021 09:32 PM (MVjcR)

473 To continue, by sizing the decapping pins to the cartridge diameter, you get a better presizing, are less likely to break a decapping pin (rare but I have done it on Lee equipment and more often on other (cough RCBS), and it will fix problems with the case opening enough to fit in your resizing die.

Good call by Lee and pretty cheap--about 4-5 buck a pin. The .45 caliber decapping pin is a sight to behold as you could probably punch out a berdan primer with it and not miss a beat.

478 Everyone's mileage will vary, but for 9mm, 38spl, and 45ACP, in 9 years of reloading I've never had an issue doing decap/resize-prime-powder throw-bullet seat with crimp in one series on my Lee 4-hole turret press. Cleaned first (walnut shell, with a bit of mineral spirits and Nufinish liquid car wax added). Now follow same procedure with 45 Colt and 380ACP, my "new" calibers.

OK, 9mm gets another step, as lube for decapping must be removed (brief tumble in clean walnut).

Anyway, I see lots of permutations on the process but mine seems pretty efficient.

487 Regarding cleaning, I ran my brushes through bores, lightly (with a precision drop bottle) oiled working parts, and cleaned and checked metal surfaces on about ten rifles for problems. Lubed and worked bolts with Slick 2000 which I find works about as well as anything without hardening. I do this annually whether I fire it or not. If you get the Safariland CLP collector, it last about two years in protecting surfaces so an easy application to rifle metal exteriors by wipedown.

Right now, my downstairs work shop is in transition as I am upgrading facilities but have hit some snags. Should be back to normal and able to reload in about two weeks.

500 478 rhomboid, you can get away with not lubing 9mm but it is hard on the die, I cracked a carbide ring once resizing 9mm but it took literally thousands of rounds before it did so.

I now lightly lube only about one out of ten rounds of 9mm with my fingers when resizing 9mm and if you use water based lube, alcohol wipes do fine in removing the lube.

Posted by: whig at March 28, 2021 09:42 PM (pO7gM)

501 The CLP "COL" - collector's version - I use on the exterior of my rifle metal, and on the new CZ-83 I bought a few years back and put away without shooting. 504 498 Jim, Take a look at the Lee App press. It has basically taken over most of my handgun and .223 reloading brass processing including pocket swaging. The tube feed takes a bit of jiggling to set up but speeds brass processing magnitudes beyond a single stage.

I use the Lee bench block system as it makes it easy to switch presses in and out and the steel has the rigidity to make it handle full length resizing of most brass (perhaps .50 BMG or .338 lapua excepted) with aplomb on a single stage press.

506 whig I am an addict of Imperial Sizing Wax, for which your one-case-every-5-10 works fine. I have some of that Lee lube in a tube which I'm finishing off with 30-06 processing, it came with my first reloading purchase, from a guy in the next neighborhood who was down-sizing, 10 years ago.

Speaking of which, I need to clean the decapping dies for 30-06, 9mm, and 30 carbine (resizing lube) and the bullet seating dies for 38spl and 45ACP (bullet blue wax lube). Have never done so, you can see the build-up, after years of reloading probably should bite the bullet and embrace the drudgery.

510 That hammer strut is a simple little piece of metal. If not immediately available on-line my solution would be to buy a 3' piece of W1 drill rod big enough to make the part. McMaster has a 1/2" diameter rods for $14. Clamp the rod in a vise and create the part on the end of the rod with a file and drill the hole. Maybe drill the hole first, then file. Don't cut it off the rod and don't polish it yet. Now heat it up with a propane or Mapp gas torch to red heat and quench it in water. This will make it hard and brittle. Harder than a file. Now reheat it gently with the propane torch farther away from the part to temper it. First it will turn yellow and then blue. When blue, quench it. Now use a thin Dremel cut off disk and cut the part from the rod. Polish it with abrasives.
If you mess it up, you still have another 33" of rod to work with. This should not take more than 1 hour total. You will have a better part than the original.

511 whig, same here - I have the Lee bench block mounting system, even though I have only one press. The workbench is for other things besides reloading, and that arrangement makes it a snap to put the press away. Some day I can see getting a beefy single-stage press, and then I'll be able to quickly switch it out with the turret press.

521 Lysenko, of the two, reloading steel cased ammo is the easier task. But, you either have to have the relatively rare boxer primed steel cased ammo, or you have to convert berdan to boxer which is a PITA. Can be done on a craftwork one by one model but a lot of pain for little gain. The problems with reloading steel is a) steel rusts and any protective coating that the steel cased ammo had is pretty much shot after cleaning and resizing. Two, your reloading dies will not like you, particularly the resizing die as they like much softer brass than the steel. Third, if you have a scratch in a steel case, dent, etc. it is a permanent weak spot in the case and you might just have the case let go there. So, all in all, can be done, PITA.

Reloading .22 LR or even recharging Boxer primers which is now apparently a thing, is more or less something that is a) dangerous and requires very strict adherence to basically lab safety type rules, and b) makes inferior .22 or Boxer priming that creates ammo that wont fire reliably in about 1 in 10 at best or even less at worst. Useful for SHTF knowledge but not for normal consumption right now.

538 511 rhomboid, unless you are doing cartridge conversions of brass, the Lee Challenger will do all including full resizing except if you are doing magnums or .50 BMG.

I am impressed and have set up and worked on the new Lyman Turret Press aka brass smith. Nice heavy press but crappy primer application. I dislike tube fed primer feeding anyway for safety reasons but I dislike tube fed priming systems even more when they do not feed.

I used a rock chucker in the past which is a good press as well for a single stage. Dunno about the new China made ones.

If going cast, you can buy the Redding Boss which right now is a better buy than the Classic Cast Lee single stage. Exception is if you use quick change dies.

542 Good info, whig, as always. I have no progressive press, and yes I have seen the ceilings where primer-feed tubes explodulated. No interest in fancy feeding systems here.

If I do get a single stage down the road, I'm assuming 1) it will be in normal, non-panic conditions, and 2) used, locally - how I "source" most of my gunz and reloading gear, as a first choice.

543 Winners were the guys living rural who had entire reloading rooms atop their garages, with a window next to the bench where they could wheel over and try their reloads on the targets visible in the distance (100 yds, 150 yds, etc). All without leaving their chair. It was jaw-droppingly awesome.

hahaha, I know a guy that has that setup in his (no joke) singlewide trailer. Makes $100K+ per year as a welder and lives like a pauper so he can retire young, but spends money on guns and reloading on his 20 or so acres.

Also has a gun safe/room built into the trailer that he welded and added on. It's crazy white trash and fantastic.

Quite the character as you might imagine.

544 527 Rhomboid, I tucked the knowledge away and it is feasible. But, dealing with very sensitive chemicals, something to be done in desperation more than for general use. Look up the AOS gun thread several weeks ago for information. I posted the website where you can go for it but don't have it at my fingertips right now. In addition, it might actually be easier to reuse Berdan primers than Boxer in this situation.

The poor Russians used to reload .22 LR using match heads to make primers to do it.

545 I reload everything on a single stage press. Don't think I'm smart enough to use a progressive!

Naw, man. There's something for everyone tonight. We talked about reloading time.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at March 28, 2021 10:04 PM (DMUuz)

551 Rhomboid, I use imperial as well but use some other stuff for certain operations such as cartridge conversions. Quit using spray stuff as I haven't stuck a case, but it is much more frequent if you use spray lube.

Regarding cleaning the dies, ultrasonic is the easiest but be careful of your solutions. The second is die disassembly and I use Slick 2000's grease cleaner for firearms to do disassembled dies. I have used Acetone on a cotton swab on occasion as well if in a hurry after processing a lot of nasty range brass. You have to get a bit more involved if you use a bunch of lead bullets as cleaning your seating die is also a good idea.

552 I have both progressive and turret presses, I only use 3 stations on each. Charge, set and crimp. Priming being the most troublesome step I went with the Lee bench prime, it works great and it's isolated from all the other steps.

Posted by: Weasel at March 28, 2021 10:09 PM (MVjcR)

554 545 Weasel, I use a turret press for a lot of stuff and have a progressive that I rarely use. I tend to do brass processing, then hand priming, then the rest of the reloading process. I have never had a high primer when hand priming and never crushed one either that way.

The newer Lee Bench Prime is now set up and going to break it in the next reloading session. Easier on old hands than the older lee hand primers.

Posted by: whig at March 28, 2021 10:09 PM (pO7gM)

555 ck, I use a powder cop die in my turret to fill out the fourth place. I size separately and hand prime. So, most of my setup for handguns on a turret is powder charging, powder cop, bullet seating, factory crimp.

I use a Sinclair hand priming tool for rifle cartridges. It really give you a great feel for what's going on. I usually use a Lee hand primer with the little tray when I'm reloading handgun calibers. It nowhere near as nice a tool as the Sinclair but gets the job done!

559 RCBS universal hand primer for those looking for a primer solution. It is the bees knees.

Posted by: 4 at March 28, 2021 10:19 PM (KnJdm)

560 557 Weasel, I have looked at the Sinclair tool but it has been awhile. Sinclair makes nice stuff. Same as I keep looking at the Forster's press and a precision bullet seating setup. But, firing 3 MOA military surplus rifles with iron sights is not conducive to noticing fine reloading tools.

I have pretty much settled on using a Remage barrel setup and going with getting a .280 Remington barrel to go with my LA receiver and bolt. I can always ream out the .280 Remington to go to the .280 AI. Then I can get a .284 Winchester and so on using only one receiver but adding a barrel or so in calibers that I have the bullets on hand for. Possibly a McMillan stock depending on how much is spent on home upgrades in the near future. Replacing windows and perhaps an extension.

561 Oh and current reloading is done with a Lee hand press, until our build is complete and I can put in my Lee Classic Cast single stage.

565 BTW, Weasel, I have barrel vises, action wrenches, depth gages, torque wrenches (for the AR's mainly) and other toys to rebarrel firearms safely and I always use headspace gages on builds and know how to do chamber casts. Don't want to scare you.

568 Plus one on the Scorpion evo 3 but also try out the CAA Roni kit. I run one of those for my OL with a Glock 17, a 3.5 lb. ghost rocket trigger and a romeo 5 on top. Super lightweight and fits in a small backpack for a great trunk gun.
Also try "wet ones" for cleaning

570 Not a lot of shooting this week, but I am working on an inside the pants holster for a full size .44 SA with the 7.5 inch tube. Why, you ask? Cause I can. WW Silvertips in a SA .44 are a religious experience. As in, after firing, one tends to take the Lord's name in vain. Concealed carry with the rig will be interesting. 511 Tactical pants for the win, by the way. What the hell, this is Arizona, right? Jasonj, Tucson

573 On the topic of cleaning; owing to the fact that this has, historically, been a first world nation, a BIG overlooked component to cleaning is not just corrosion prevention, but readiness to either issue out the weapon for use or to cache it.

You don't want to be that guy who suddenly finds he needs to arm a buddy and hands him a dirty rifle... or needs to cache things in a hurry, but you have a safe full of dirty guns that need hours of cleaning prior to a proper application of preservative. White glove cleaning for its own sake is dumb and wasteful, but it stems from centuries of experience in maintaining readiness and a realistic understanding of what happens in a field environment. If it's not a range toy, it should be serviceably clean.

Did I get to the range? No, but I cranked out some custom parts from scratch out of bar stock, so that should count for something. If you're too broke to shoot there are a number of related skills to work on.

574 Comments aside and advise ^ above: If I made that mistake I would assume that if it could be bent 45 degrees and not snap, then it must not be very hardened in the first place. I'd heat it red, cool. Bend it back. Then heat it re heat it read, and quench it in on a water soaked paper towel. Or don't quench it. Just definitely heat it before bending it back straight, and don't harden it - it dosent seem to have been hardened in the first place else it would not have bent.

575 Tempering...float it on top of molten lead until it turns straw yellowish. It's pretty easy for small parts.

576 I agree with A.H. Lloyd on gun cleaning, and have one other reason to add to the list: Zen. Cleaning guns is one of the most relaxing things I can think of to do. Turn on some tunes, get out the cleaning supplies, and for a couple of hours the world goes away, there is just me and my guns. Yeah, ok, a wife, a few cats, the neighbors tuning up their trucks with no mufflers... The only thing better is maple syrup on French toast.

577 First: Fire that gun(smith?).

Must've dropped it.

I would think that if an exact replacement part is unavailable that using the original will be cheaper than manufacturing one as you still have to heat and temper it.

A machine shop may have the equipment to heat and straighten and then retemper it.

That's the route I would go if no replacement avail.
