Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thank you for stopping by on this Saturday afternoon. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

I recently linked about suspect flea & tick collars. Even the congress critters are somewhat concerned. H/T Hrothgar.

The following is called the 10 Commandments for Dog Owners. I believe you can substitute any one of our pets here.

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you acquire me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3. Place your trust in me. Remember that before you acquire me.

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment. I only have you.

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.

6. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that can easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.

7. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I don’t understand what you ask of me or perhaps I am not feeling well, not getting the right food, been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.

8. Take care of me when I get old, you too will grow old.

9. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say ” I can’t bear to watch,” or “let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier if you are there.

10. Remember, no matter what, that I love you. Unconditionally.

Thank you so much for the pet thread! It is a such a fun distraction from the often unpleasant reality of politics. I am sending along a couple of photos of our two goofy dogs and a dog related bumper sticker that the horde might enjoy. Feel free to edit.

A year or so ago we took our older dog, Mr. Wiggles to the Humane Society to find a new pack mate and we left with this little 40 pound pistol we named Huckleberry.
Huckleberry's constant companion is a pillow in the shape of a bumblebee that he drags wherever he goes. He generally sleeps with his paws wrapped around the "head" of the pillow and then fills his mouth with pillow before he dozes off.

Wiggles seems to like him. He puts up with the puppy antics and even the occasional tail in the eye while he tries to sleep. - Nancye

Good afternoon Nancy. My middle school sense of humor enjoyed the bumper sticker. Your two buddies are just adorable. I'm glad that I can help you and others enjoy the non-political world for a couple of hours every Saturday. Thank you for sharing your pride and joy pooches.

This is a tribute to my youngest son's two goldfish of late memory, Morgan and Stacey. He picked gender-neutral names for them because you can't tell with goldfish until they grow a bit older. I had to move the tank out of his room so the flooring guys could get in there, and in the process I accidentally killed them with water that was too warm. It broke his poor heart because he was more diligent about taking care of those fish than about anything else in his life. They recognized me as a guy who brought the food and would always swim up to the glass and wiggle around any time I walked in the room. I miss them terribly and feel terrible about my mistake. My son (age 13) composed music for the funeral and wrote a poem for them.

After they were gone I realized I didn't have any pictures of them, so I found a nice picture on-line and made this for my son. - Sobek

Nash, black and other colors. Still a puppy. But a big one. Both foster dogs in their forever home.

Adopted a sad, silent, and withdrawn looking dog from the shelter today. We had a good feeling in our guts about her and we were right -- she did a 180 as soon as she was out of the cage. For some unfathomable reason the prior owner named her Devil (which she does answer to) but she clearly ain't one so we'll go with Dex. Pit mix is what they said but I'm not seeing it. Whatever, she's one sweet mutt.

Picture #1 is of M. Jacques Kitten. You know how to pronounce it, all French-i-fied and stuff, but he goes by Maurice, because nobody else can be Chef Jacques. I mean, c'mon ... Chef Jacques is a gentleman, and
Maurice is a semi-hostile dick, thus a Moron-worthy, fat little turd.

Picture #2 includes the best-of-friends, Kyle! and Bert.

Lazy? Oh hell no, just moar efficient. Quite the crew you have there. Maurice looks like he wants a belly rub. Kyle and Bert really do appear to be best of pals. The Pet Morons are happy to help you folks out in CA.

Fun Size Joe and his pal Gumby-Weasel

Pretty short entry there Weasel. I'm guessing that this photo is worth a thousand words but Gumby isn't spilling the beans on FSJ.

I suppose it means that I have no life, but I really look forward to the pet thread every week. But I've been free-riding for a long time and decided I should give back, hence this photo of the committee which will greet you should you find your way up our driveway.

From left to right, Greta, the Newfoundland who doesn't look like she weights 130 pounds. The baby of the bunch, I'll just add that everything they say about these dogs is true as far as being near water: if you should happen to be swimming in a lake, an ocean of a backyard pool, she WILL leap in and rescue you. Even if you didn't know you needed to be saved. You can't get her not to without tying her up.

In the middle is Toby the Belgian Sheepdog. He's my wife's third Belgian and they're smarter than most kids. Anticipates what you're going to do sometimes before you do. But the most one-person dogs I've ever known. They'll tolerate you, even be your friend - although strangers don't get much more than a quick sniff. Just not interested. A complicated and amazing dog, maybe not for first time owners because they have to be convinced that you know what you're doing before they'll agree to go along.

On the right is my best friend Riley. Found him at the pound on the eighth day of a seven day hold. The people who dropped him off said he was out of control. Brought him home, he went to sleep and has basically been comatose ever since. Been 8 years now. Tends to disasters like getting hit by trucks, but he's just the best. He healed my utterly broken heart after I thought I could never love another dog again.

I think you have a full and wonderful life Bill. That pack of yours is certainly unique. I've never known anyone with such a wide spread of varieties. So no treats used? You must be the dog whisperer reincarnated. Thanks for your kind words and sharing your gang with us today.

I really do appreciate the compliments you pay to the Pet Thread. I'm not sure if I can keep going at it forever. But, God willing we'll be here for quite a few more Saturdays to come.

2 My young dog Jake does that pillow thing too. Only his pillow is a tubular cat bed with fake fur at the top. He puts his mouth on it and just zones out. But he is a weird dog anyway.

15 Found out the name of one of the feral cats we've been feeding this past winter. He's a nice looking Russian blue. His owners have been worried about him. Now that they know where he hangs out maybe they can rescue him.

17 My little Bogie has been very silly this week. He caught sight of a scarier terrier in the glass of the TV cabinet and barked for about an hour until I covered the glass with a blanket. He was so funny. He also growled at the noise from the ice maker once or twice, but his assault on his vague reflection was something I'd never seen before.

20 Some time ago I found a live webcam of a bird feeder hosted by Cornell Labs. I sometimes put it on the TV in my office and let my cats watch it. They find it very entertaining. Anyone else do something similar?

This is not always as easy as it sounds. I was turned down because of my husband's age, unless of course, I wanted a pitbull. No way I could handle that, physically or mentally. I ended up going with a breeder. I have a sweet little terrier who loves everyone and who I can pick up if the need arises.

31 Another new pup arrived at Shep's yesterday. We got another doxxie!! His name is Rascal and he's 15 yrs old. My next shift isn't until Tuesday but if they need extra help tomorrow I may volunteer. Jenny is THRIVING! For our little hospice patient she's really done so well. We thought Zoey had been adopted but that fell through. Gracie is finally free of worms. Viola is not doing well, missing her owner terribly.

45 I've been following Takis Shelter in Crete on youtube. This man Takis started it seven years ago, now he has over 400 dogs, some cats, sheep, and goats. The pups have lots of space to roam among the olive trees. The place is well maintained, they look clean and well fed and happy.

The rescue videos are heartbreaking. Most of the dogs had been tied up for years on short chains or abandoned, starved, abused and mistreated. Attitudes toward animals are only slowly changing in Greece.

My favorite is Grandpa. He's a really old dog who was found in the road, now he has a soft bed, all the food he can eat, and medications he needs.

It's also nice to see the countryside of Greece in all the videos.

48 The thing that amazes me with the rescue videos is that most of the dogs settle right down when they realize what's happening. Maybe there are vicious dogs they don't show but most seem to be grateful.

When I was in Greece, I was astonished to see wild dogs everywhere on the streets. There was a dog hanging around a street cafe, and I asked the waiter who the dog belonged to. He looked at me like I had two heads. The concept of these dogs belonging to anyone was clearly foreign to him.

50 Since this is the Smart Military blog pet thread, I have a question about military service dogs. When did the practice of making the dog a superior to their handler? I know they did this so if the handler abuses the dog it is akin to striking a superior but when did it happen? Korean war? Vietnam, War of Spanish Succession?

51 I took Pretty Girl (a kitteh) outside for her first time. She didn't fuss while I held her and then I put her on the ground. She went "on patrol" (as my ex-gf calls it) but eventually decided she wanted to go back inside. Later on, I opened the back door, she looked out, and "nope, it's cold out there." I think this counts as successfully introducing a kitteh to the outside without having to get her chip # and start searching around.

That's a nice way of looking at it. My old airedale Lady never liked being left at home when the family went to work or school. She got terribly lonely at times, and being put on a chain outside didn't make things better. She was always glad to greet us in turn as we came home.

As an addendum to my previous comment, I would say that Anko-chan the house ninja cat misses human company dreadfully anyway sometimes. If CPT Charles goes out she gets especially anxious if not napping. Loves to greet him when he returns. I mostly get the "where did you go" stare of reproach.

56 Our big guy, Shadow, gave my wife and I a fright recently. He's around 14, and had an adverse reaction to some antibiotics, to the point we weren't sure he was going to make it. Fortunately, about 24 hours later, he was up and about and, by the next day he was back to his usual self.

You could have cut and served the amount of relief my wife and I felt.

Not that we don't realize that he's been around far longer than a dog his size should be, but, darn it, we just aren't ready!

But, I don't think one is ever ready to let go of their pet.

As you might have seen in one of the threads yesterday, I brought my felines to the vet/groomer. The big black, Wolf, only needed his rabies shot. But Chekov D. Siberian, the older cat, had a coat full of mats that he would not let us comb out or cut out. I hoped they could just bathe and comb him out, but no go, he had to be shaved. Now, instead of a full-ruffed collie, he looks like a white, black, and gray Chihuahua!

He doesn't seem to hold it against me; he's a bit more affectionate than usual. Or maybe he's cold. I tell him, "You look like hell, boy!" Fortunately he doesn't get that. He looks kind of pathetic. With any luck his fur will have grown in soon, and I intend to buy a Furminator for use on both cats.

Rogaine, Capillus, and Hair Club For Cats jokes abound.

62 20 -- Lord Squirrel: There are YouTubes made especially for cats that show birds, squirrels, and all kinds of interesting wildlife. My Persian has become a tv junkie. Also, the Persian has an excellent view of my bird feeders, so he likes to hang out in that window. Last week, I bought a small feeder that attaches to the window. So far, we haven't had any customers, but I have high hopes -- even if it's just a squirrel. The cat will go crazy for whatever decides to snack there.

See if she will take to a harness and lead. The late Marie-Antoinette loved it; when I'd bring out the harness, she'd run crying to the door!

64 Molly the trash can rescue dog passed puppy school today. She only got a "fair" mark for down everything else was good. We need to work on that.

65 The thing that amazes me with the rescue videos is that most of the dogs settle right down when they realize what's happening. Maybe there are vicious dogs they don't show but most seem to be grateful.

Shadow, the one I mentioned up thread, came to us from a rescue. He'd been taken by Animal Control because he bit the child of his owner and was deemed dangerous.

We took him on, we have no kids, and, from what we've discovered, he never, and I mean never, bites out of the blue. He growls when something is done to him he doesn't like, but, just outright bite someone? No.

From the scars we've found on his body, we're pretty sure he was abused by his previous owner and, we're equally sure the kid that got bit got plenty of warning to stop doing whatever it was doing, and didn't.

71 Toby got an emergency bath last night. Dad ran off the road on his way home. I let Toby come with when we went with the pickup. We didn't get the car, because the tow rope that is always in his pickup wasn't and the one in his car wasn't long enough to reach to the road and I didn't want the pickup off the road as it seemed like it was soft enough that it would get stuck as well. But Toby went and rolled in something vile while I was looking at it, getting the groceries transferred to the pickup to get home. Toby didn't really appreciate my lavender body wash. Today I had to wash my coat as well. At least it was due to be washed anyway.

Thanks. Ultimately I think the problem was this training class I attended on Sunday AM. The trainer said not to give them breakfast but to bring "Highly motivating" treats. I've had issue all week and now that I really think about it it was all those treats plus the liver she was serving up.

76 I got a nice older dog book in the mail, which centers on a little dog named "Tough Enough" and the Smoky Mountain family who love him and whose adventures he shares. I recall the book from childhood so bought it for the grandsons. The illustrations are gorgeous.

77 When did the practice of making the dog a superior to their handler? I know they did this so if the handler abuses the dog it is akin to striking a superior but when did it happen? Korean war? Vietnam, War of Spanish Succession?

I don't know the answer, but I always thought that was interesting. I honestly didn't even know about the practice until I worked at an Army vet clinic a few years back.

87 45 I've been following Takis Shelter in Crete on youtube. This man Takis started it seven years ago, now he has over 400 dogs, some cats, sheep, and goats. The pups have lots of space to roam among the olive trees. The place is well maintained, they look clean and well fed and happy.

The rescue videos are heartbreaking. Most of the dogs had been tied up for years on short chains or abandoned, starved, abused and mistreated. Attitudes toward animals are only slowly changing in Greece.

My favorite is Grandpa. He's a really old dog who was found in the road, now he has a soft bed, all the food he can eat, and medications he needs.

It's also nice to see the countryside of Greece in all the videos.

92 I spotted the Belgian Groenendael immediately. I had three females consecutively. None were trained beyond intermediate obedience but each had their little routine. It was a thing we did together to clean the slate and do something they will certainly do perfectly. Then so much joy, you can't believe it.

My friend hunts with several hunting dogs through the years. Always dogs around.

I said, hey wanna see what my dog and I do? She snapped to attention and attached herself to my side. She anticipated every move and performed each command instantly each half started already so she sat erectly when my mouth enunciated the "t." Scary fast. Like a scary little Nazi. When I say down she throws her arms forward and slams into position when my lips enunciate the "n." Scary ass little dog so fast with extreme joyous reaction. It's play. They each played perfectly. They each took 30 seconds to train on anything. I merely suggested what they do and they leap on every hint.

Later, my hunter friend said, "I couldn't believe your dog. I've never seen anything like it."
