No. Salt removes water from things because the osmotic pressure of a salt solution is greater than that of pure water. That's kind of a restatement of the observation though, so the actual answer is that the migration of water to dilute a salt solution is driven by entropy.

Cell walls have membranes that try and balance the salt levels between inside and outside. So when a cell produces water by chemical reactions, the water will be excreted out of the cell rather than blowing the cell up by being retained. If somehow the cell has too little water, some will be brought in to balance matters.

Salty water simulates the "too much water inside" condition, so water leaves the inside and the remainder is dehydrated.

It just occurred to me to draw the analogy with tires deflating over time. The pressure inside is greater than that outside. The tire is somewhat permeable to air passing in either direction, but since there are more air molecules (sloppy usage, but let it pass) inside than outside, more air molecules go out than come in, just as a matter of probability. That's what I meant by entropy above.

Sure it is. You can also rejuvenate them by (carefully) heating them, as in a microwave. Don't get carried away though; it's easy to heat solids to red heat in a microwave. We used to rejuvenate molecular sieves that way, but more than once I saw someone pull a fused mass of molecular sieves out of the microwave.

Mach diamonds are a common compressible fluid phenomenon you get in a super sonic jet as standing shockwaves reflect off the exhaust jet's interface with subsonic air.
