The One Year Anniversary of Fifteen Days to Flatten the Curve

This is a fantastic point: The general lockdowns weren't general lockdowns. As a friend said, we didn't have a lockdown, we had poor people delivering shit to rich people.

Instead of protecting the people really at risk, the Ruling Class -- the "Zoom class," the people who can work completely remotely -- protected itself, and killed half a million people.

But let's listen to them some more!

Martin Kulldorff
@MartinKulldorff

Rather than #FocusedProtection of high-risk older people, lockdowns protected the Zoom class while throwing low-income workers under the bus. Politicians, journalists and scientists protected themselves instead of the most vulnerable. That is not public health.

Dr. Tannahill Glen
@tannahillglen

The ENTIRE response to COVID ('work from home,' lockdowns of the outdoors, school closures) has been tailor-made for middle/high SES [socio-economic status, I assume -- ace] populations, who have online jobs, Peletons & takeout. It's as if low SES group didn’t even exist.

WHAT IF the entire response to COVID was instead tailored to vulnerable, disadvantaged lower SES populations? What would it look like? Serious questions.

The general lockdowns were never about protecting the general public.

They were only about protecting Karen.

Below, an important video from Steven Crowder.

She doesn't want the answer. She thinks she does, but she's wrong. She's wrong because she'll find the answer unacceptable. If the COVID response had been tailored to the working class, then the response would have been, "try to protect the institutionalized elderly population but otherwise do nothing and continue embracing Trumpism."

Because Trumpism is the only shot in the arm that the working class has gotten since at least the Nixon administration.

50 Never ever forget what the two week lockdown was all about. The amount of rewriting has been astonishing, even to a cynic like me. The lockdown was not about killing off the virus or preventing people from getting it. It was about preventing so many people from getting it so quickly that we overwhelmed the hospitals.

Within that first two weeks (maybe four weeks if we're being extremely generous), it became entirely clear that this was not going to engender a hospital capacity crisis. The initial reason for the response was a non-issue. The moment that became clear, then pivoted to new (and impossible) goals of "stopping the spread" and other justifications. That is also the moment that this became an op.

When you take the date of a mandate (lockdown, mask, both, either) and then examine the two-week period before and after it, you will find that the infection rate (as determined by test positivity - imperfect and flawed, but consistent) shows zero change at scale. Neither lockdowns nor mask mandates make a bit of difference in the aggregate. No correlation and no statistical significance. Some areas show improvement, some shows degradation, but it all averages out to zero.

The better question is, "how many more lives have been lost to the response than would have been lost to the disease, had the response been effective?" Now, that's harder because there are a lot of variables and assumptions - but my nickel says "a shit-ton more."

116 The clue is them using prison terminology to describe what they were demanding be done.

Lockdowns are/were only used at one time to describe when the entire prison/facility would be shut with no one in or out and all inmates secured either in their cells/rooms or in designated areas tightly controlled and under 24/7 observation.

Usually done because an inmate escaped, got loose, a riot was going on or developing or suspected to be or some other situation that needed a strict accounting of all inmates and personnel.

That they use that word says all you need to know about what's involved.

The left refused to cooperate and in fact set up so many roadblocks and refusals to comply that it's a testament to the american people that we came through all that intact.

And now that they truly have "taken" power they expect there to be no opposition and will react to any as if those opposing have armed themselves and are preparing to attack. By doing so they have insured that that is what will happen because they've given no other outlet to protect ourselves from that which we believe is dangerous to ourselves, our families and our nation.

They've already taken the first steps by incarcerating anyone that gained access to the Capitol on Jan 6 and are persecuting them with charges of terrorism and treason while the looters and burners of last summer were let go without charges.

221 The lockdowns weren't about protecting anyone. They were about shutting down the economy and portraying Trump as a loser.

--

That was certainly a big part of it. But there was an underlying and sinister component to it, as well. Maybe it didn't start off as anything more than bludgeoning Trump's chances and his immensely successful economy. But early on, people like Gates began to realize it was the perfect opportunity to push some kind of "vaccine" into the arms of the entire world. People like Gates, who think it's his job to depopulate earth. People like Gates, who think his $billions should allow him to tinker with things he knows nothing about. Or tinker with things he has no right to. Like our medical records. Like China's database. I make no mistake that, as far-fetched as it sounds, that's the ultimate goal. Or, let me amend that to say it's one of the ultimate goals. I think it all started to take shape early on, when this virus became a twofer of possibilities: get rid of Trump and get ahold of the keys to population control and medical records.

Alright, alright...I'll loosen my Reynolds hat.

A year from now - two years - five years from now - mask mandates will still be in effect. Perhaps not nationwide, perhaps not even in some blue states - but they will still be there in various cities, stores, restaurants and public transportation hubs. Because masks have gone beyond mere palliative medical objects. They are now fashion items and religious totems.

252 I had an interesting conversation with a guy who owns a used office furniture place in San Jose, CA. He was tapping me for the real estate market here - which is going gangbusters. It's insane TBH. The "work remotely" people have never had it better. Nor have the large companies, which are all saving tons of cash with workers at home, eating their own food and burning their own utilities. Recently, a home I did a shoot on in my old neighborhood - a house literally not 100 yards from HWY 17 sold for over $1.2M.Not a great neighborhood.

On the other hand he's seeing commercial properties reconfigure. He's not selling furniture en masse to new offices, rather people working from home, setting up offices. Most of his biz has been FB, Goolag, eBay.

3:5 homes I shoot are people leaving the state. How long can this be maintained? Who's moving in to take these places? No idea. I'm not seeing a decline even on the lower end townhouses/condos. I'm guessing the techs who were living 5 to a condo are now getting their own places, while those in Silicon Valley proper are fleeing to the once rural areas, buying big homes. Nope, nobody here on the mid-high end hurting one little bit.

Far worse, and far different, and for the same reason that COVID restrictions require draconian enforcement, Polio vaccine trials *didn't.* Polio was actually that bad. If COVID were actually that bad, we wouldn't need draconian enforcement because people would take required steps all on their out of self preservation.

For an indication of how bad Polio was, here's a clue. When Dr. Salk was working on his vaccine and needed kids to test on, he asked for permission from the parents to administer the experimental vaccines to their kids while at school. Those parents - a lot of them upper middle class or wealthy (or at least affluent) agreed to it. My mother was one of the test subjects and she got something like six or seven shots from Salk's team in Pittsburgh. And she was from a well-to-do Jewish family at a good a school.

That's how bad Polio was. They got parents to hand their kids over to Dr. Salk for experimentation.

I'm hesitant to paint the clergy with a broad brush of coward. I know what we personally did to keep our church open. We literally struggled each day all day long. Meetings and petitions and home visits and mayoral conferences and Synod conferences and everything short of standing in our underwear out in the church parking lot, handing out communion. We tried. And tried. Still, we couldn't pull it off till July. But not for lack of trying.
Posted by: grammie winger at March 16, 2021 12:52 PM (45fpk)

Try try try try. If anyone had any balls in that church, they would have kept having services as usual. Yup, there'd be sacrifices and fines and mixups with the law. But it's like everything else with the American populace; they want someone else to do the sacrificing. So most just "tried".

309 This was a government-caused catastrophe. If they really wanted to help the average person that had their lives disrupted because of what GOVT did, that 1.9 T 'relief' as well as the proposed 2T 'relief' would be much better served by making all those displaced workers' salaries whole.

The game was given up when the Dems served up this wish list of blue-state goodies instead. If no government worker (teacher, fire, police, sanitation, etc.) had to be furloughed or laid off for the last year, why do these state coffers get replenished first, before the average worker they displaced? For the transformation to the party of the working class, it's galling that no Republican is advocating for this. It seems like an eternity ago when Reagan said that the worst sentence to hear was 'We're from the government, and we're here to help.' Only too true these days.

And when they pitched the scheme - closing schools, social distancing, lockdowns, etc. - to Bush 43 for the avian flu, the CDC and the executive immediately rejected it as far too costly and unknown to be fathomable in real terms. 444 Interesting thing about Salk though - he was involved in an infamous case about a public dispute over article authorship.

He actually changed around the author listings in this paper: "Salk, JE, JS Younger, and EH Ward. 1954. Use of color change of phenol red as the indicator in titrating poliomyelitis virus or its antibody in a tissue-culture system." to make himself 1st author of this paper, depriving Dr. Julius Younger of credit for doing most of the work on it. Remember that this was the 50's, so there was usually just one typed manuscript and Salk also went behind Younger's back to make sure that the author listings were published as you see them.

Younger and Salk didn't talk for about 25-30 years after this incident. The point? Brilliant people, scientists or otherwise, can have a bit of a nasty side. So don't elevate them up to the level of deities who can not be questioned.

Is it though? I know when we talk about "economic costs" it sounds like "greedy capitalism" talk to people of that mindset, but what we're really saying is "people's personal financial and mental well being."

As in, this year long lockdown is going to cost real people a lot in terms of their life span, their life savings, their career paths, their mental health, their relationships. Like it sucks for us as adults, but I can't help but feel like we'll be dealing with the repercussions from this for kids currently in school for decades to come. It's going to cost us as a society many "life years."

466 Late of course.

Actually ace, haven't read more of Kulldorf's thing here - he was one of the many I read and followed for months before giving up on the society and the topic - but the whole class-based thing, while absolutely legit as far as it goes, *also* is off the mark.

The mark being the logical and epidemiological reality that you *cannot contain a highly contagious prevalent virus in a society like this, "mitigation" doesn't work, and the focus needs to be on therapies and possibly Kulldorf's "focused isolation" of most vulnerable cohorts.

It's not just that the whole response was socially/economically incredibly disparate in impact (heh), it's that it *was almost certainly doomed to be ineffective*.

But when I went to HEB last week, I'd say at least 15% of the other people there were also not wearing masks. And it was a good cross-section of the genders and races you typically see at HEB. So, it's a start.

The Texas State Parks org also sent out a letter basically saying they're increasing capacity and not requiring masks (they did say strongly encourage). So, that's good. Not that I was wearing a mask in a STATE PARK anyway.

You get this long chain of gibberish "alien" and the subtitles say "thank you". Then there's this little quip of a few syllables and the subtitles are a Shakespearean speech.

If there's one James Bond film you can get on DVD or Blue-ray, get Live and let Die. Not because it's the best Bond-- it's not--but because it's the one most likely to be "altered" in the future.

It's portrayal of blacks is....uncomfortable.

When somebody like Newsom gets caught dining out / socializing in violation of their own restrictions, it is often with donors/cronies. To have gotten this wrong -- in a really critical way that completely changes the valence of the story -- and to just quietly tack on a correction with a low-key piece months later is...they unwittingly denounce themselves with this. I am beginning to alter my default mode.
I don't like it when people writing stories whose thrusts I disagree with are being lazy or irresponsible with the facts.

But I hate it *even more*, in fact feel genuinely betrayed, when that is done on stories whose thrusts I DO agree with. I feel suckered, like a fool.

566 @rickb223, I know it makes for a funny meme, but a virus is several million times bigger than an SO2 molecule. That being said, the relevant question is whether both are smaller than the pores of a non-M95 mask, and of course the answer is yes, so the mask does nothing to stop viruses.

It does stop droplets of liquid, which are way more infectious than individual airborne viruses. I'm sure any of us having surgery would prefer the OR to be masked up. So it does do some good, but it's not the ultimate answer.

575 "This is a fantastic point: The general lockdowns weren't general lockdowns. As a friend said, we didn't have a lockdown, we had poor people delivering shit to rich people.

Instead of protecting the people really at risk, the Ruling Class -- the "Zoom class," the people who can work completely remotely -- protected itself, and killed half a million people."

It's not wrong that this benefited the Zoom class, but... nobody was going to protect the old people. You can't. Nursing homes are some of the worst, lowest paying healthcare gigs you can get, and you will *never* have effective infection control in that setting from that population of workers. Especially in the really lousy facilities located out in bumblefuck.

Those people got nuked because the CDC, WHO, and Dem-controlled MSM shat all over the effective preventative measures and treatments, and because some blue state and local governments pursued policies of stuffing COVID patients in them to inflate mortality. The lockdowns had nothing to do with it either way.

Florida managed to protect the elderly in nursing homes. You should read up about it. All NY needed to do was keep infected residents out of their nursing home until they recovered. Instead, they forced them back into the homes. And many of the care workers traveled to more than one home for their jobs.

And yes, I've worked in nursing homes before. But there are still simple things that could be done and weren't, in many states.
