SILENT FILM SPECIAL EFFECTS
These are pretty cool. I’ve always been more fascinated by the talents of Set Designers than of the actual actors on the set.

TAKING A POCKET CONSTITUTION TO A MOLOTOV COCKTAIL FIGHT
I’ve made several recent posts here at AOS about the battle against cancel culture, and how some non-violent options to fight back will still require conservatives to bend our polite “peacetime principle” of doing unto others as we would have them do unto us. I received an email from “Jim D” offering his thoughts on this topic. Within his email he stated:
"We show up with our pocket Declarations of Independence and Constitution; they show up with a brick and a Molotov cocktail. How do we think subsequent conversations will go? Where is the common ground?" – Jim D.
Well put, Jim.

WWII’s OPERATION MINCEMEAT – A VAGRANT’S CORPSE & A MASTERFUL DECEPTION
As World War II’s campaign against Hitler and Mussolini’s troops in North Africa was winding down, the Allies’ next move would be to invade the European mainland. And once the site for the invasion was determined – Sicily - what could be done to encourage Axis leaders to believe the invasion would happen elsewhere?
Ian Fleming (of James Bond fame) was part of a team that devised a brilliant plan – but executing it would be a challenge.
A body would be set adrift off the coast of Spain when tides would likely carry it ashore. The corpse would be dressed in a British uniform and false plans about an upcoming invasion of Greece would be planted on it.
This was not as easy as it sounds. A fresh corpse of a military age man had to be found. Second, a back-story needed to be created for him – one without holes. On his person (in his pockets, briefcase) had to be what the intelligence services called “litter,” the little pieces of paper, photos, ticket stubs, etc. that people usually carried and which could say much about them.
His body (inside and out) had to be in such a state that one would believe he had drowned after a shipwreck or falling overboard.
The body of a homeless Welsh vagrant named Glyndwr Michael, who died from ingesting rat poison, became Major William Martin of the Royal Marines. Major Martin’s body was found by a Spanish fisherman, and the German-friendly Spanish authorities passed along the fake intel found on his body to the German government.
In the end, Hitler diverted significant numbers of troops to both Greece and Sardinia. He withdrew seven divisions to Greece from the Eastern Front (where they could not be more needed), and sent a further ten to Yugoslavia. Even after Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily began, Hitler believed the Allies were going to invade Greece and withdrew even more troops from the Russian front, where they had been fighting in the monumental and key Battle of Kursk.
Major Martin was buried in Huelva, Spain. After the British government revealed Major Martin’s true identity in 1998, Glyndwr Michael’s name was added to the gravestone.
But I think I recognize a familiar game played by politicized scientists. These baleen whales were known to be in the Gulf, and had previously been identified as Bryde’s Whales, a widely distributed species whose conservation status is listed as “Least Concern.” But what if you were to suddenly classify the group of whales living in the Gulf of Mexico as an all-new species?
A study detailing the discovery of Rice’s whale, published last month in the journal Marine Mammal Science, suggests there may be fewer than 100 of the new species left in the wild, instantly adding the species to the list of critically endangered species, according to a statement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Good ol’ NOAA is at it again. They’ve been busted manipulating historical temperature records to provide fraudulent climate change charts. I’m sure we can trust them on discovering a new “sub species” of giant whales in US coastal waters.
One of the gimmicks the Fish & Wildlife Service has used to prohibit development in the Hill Country of central Texas is to classify the harvestmen (daddy long-legs) in virtually every cave as a new species. They’re the exact same arachnid, just separated by thousands of years of isolation in separate caves. I fully expect NOAA to try to suspend all oil and gas activity in the Gulf to save this newly discovered “critically endangered species.”

FLY LIKE AN EVEL
The children in our modern, no-risk society would not believe the adventures that children of a few decades ago enjoyed. When I was in grade school, Evel Knievel was a living God to us boys.
His Snake River jump had us as excited as anything the astronauts ever did. When we were indoors, we were jumping Hot Wheels over the “canyons” between tables and kitchen counters, and when outdoors we were going airborne while riding anything on wheels.
We would build ramps out of boards, or best of all, a pile of dirt at a construction site could be shoveled and molded into a ramp. I’m not sure how we survived, but the memories are great.
Were any of y’all behaving like little Evel Knievels back in the day? What other crazy reckless things did you do that would be unimaginable to the bubble-wrapped kids of today?

THE WISDOM OF KINKY FRIEDMAN
Kinky Friedman has had an excellent career as an author, songwriter, and band leader. His political career totaled just two unsuccessful races – for Justice of the Peace (Republican) in 1986 and for Texas Governor (Independent) in 2006. Although he lost that gubernatorial race to Rick Perry, a grateful nation enjoyed laughing along with his campaign.
Of all the Jewish cowboy philosophers out there, Kinky is my favorite. Here are some of his great quotes.
“Musicians can run this state better than politicians. We won't get a lot done in the mornings, but we'll work late and be honest.”
“The first thing I'll do if elected is demand a recount.”
“Politics is the only field of human endeavor where the more experience you have, the worse you get.”
“If you have the choice between humble and cocky, go with cocky. There's always time to be humble later, once you've been proven horrendously, irrevocably wrong.”
“Happiness is a moving target.”
“A happy childhood... is the worst possible preparation for life.”
“Well, I just said that Jesus and I were both Jewish and that neither of us ever had a job, we never had a home, we never married, and we traveled around the countryside irritating people.”

REPURPOSED TUNES
Aura Lee was published in 1861 and quickly became very popular with Civil War soldiers pining for the fair maidens back at home. Elvis Presley used the tune for his monster 1956 hit “Love Me Tender. “ Below are Elvis’ version of Love Me Tender along with a nice multi-part a capella version of Aura Lee.

TECHNOLOGIES YOU NEVER LEARNED BEFORE THEY BECAME OBSOLETE
The training for my first job out of college required that I take a course in the DOS operating system (along with all the courses specific to my job and industry.) I took all the courses except the DOS course, having learned the bare minimum DOS navigation required for me to do my job. My failure to complete the DOS training was even mentioned in one performance review as I recall. I always intended to get around to that training, but I never did. I guess it was in the mid-90s when Windows came along and I could finally stop sweating about not being trained on DOS.
A few years later, Palm Pilots (which were marketed as “personal digital assistants” became the rage. All of my peers had one except for me. They all loved that device, but all that stabbing with a stylus looked like a lot of work to me, especially since the device’s features didn’t even include a phone or email.
Since I never learned the joys of DOS or Palm Pilots, do any of y’all have any fond memories about what I missed with them?
Are there any mass-market technologies that you successfully avoided learning before they became obsolete?

Bringing a constitution to a molotov fight is not necessarily a bad thing, assuming we're playing the part of the French muscadins. Big thick hickory constitutions are the best, of course, but less durable wood can also work in a pinch depending on what's at hand.

Biggest waste of time ever. If it's something I need to see pictures of, email it to me. If it's something you need to explain to me, call me, or do an in person meeting. I had a job where I was expected to give powerpoint presentations weekly. So I just did one slide, put it on the wall, gave my little sales pitch to the guys (it was channel sales, so it was all people I worked with), then cut them loose after like 10 minutes unless they had a lot of questions.
Why should I try to stretch that to 30 minutes, bore everyone in the room, and keep everyone unproductive and annoyed? I don't get that corporate mindset.

Most people are just bad at public speaking. Powerpoint doesn't magically solve that. What I really hate are the meetings that require me to use the 40-slide template where at least half the slides are the same information arranged in slightly different ways.
On another note. I really wish my husband didn't always have to one-up me on feeling poorly or being sad. Like just now, I mentioned I wasn't feeling well - maybe just tired, I don't know, but my heart has been acting weird and I just generally don't feel great - and he said soberly that HE needs to go to the doctor and told me his story about not feeling well. I'll spare you the details, but WebMD would say he has cancer (based on what he told me, he's fine). And if I'm sad about something and I tell him, he immediately starts talking about how sad he is about something else.

Exactly. I transfer stuff to DVD and/or mp4 digital files for my family and friends all the time. A lot of folks have old tapes that have never been transferred to digital. I've been working from home for almost a year now, and I multi-task quite often - digitizing photos and VHS tapes. Love the traffic accident diagram. I'm still chuckling.
I never tried the daredevil stuff on a bike. The full size bike I learned to ride during Eisenhower's second term served as real transportation until I got my drivers permit and it wasn't something to risk. Hot Wheels and similar came along well after that. That bike weighed a ton, had a coaster brake and one speed:, me. However, taking care of our bikes didn't keep us from jumping off the garage roof into a pile of leaves or climbing stupidly high in trees or going from sledding to the emergency room with a shoulder separation or broken arm. There are always means for kids to be stupid.

Evel lived a hard life. "Butte" and "Cultural Experience"? Hm. That's a rough town right there. Or it was anyway.
He was a pretty good showman. Wide World of Sports - they were kind enough to broadcast all his jumps. My parents were not happy, most likely because from that point on, every kid with a bike was setting up ramps and jumps. We had some pretty good hills in the back yard, and we enjoyed setting fires and generally doing all those crazy things that made us rough and tough, as young boys are supposed to be.
Evel crashing and burning and breaking all his bones probably was a good "role model". In the back of our minds, we knew we could get hurt, I think.

Bad news is, the kit included dive flaps are not perforated. Will have to do that yourself unless you buy the aftermarket PE perforated dive flaps which I am betting will cost you a hundred bucks. Drill holes or shell out $100? Decisions. Also as aftermarket items are the wing folds and the folded turtleback behind the radio-gunner.
Non folding wings on a model with an 18.6in wingspan is not a trivial matter. Basically two Helldivers will take up as much space as one HK 1/32d B-17 kit. Good luck to those who choose to accept this mission, I'm not going to be one of them.

Incidentally, I've noticed that there's another big round of buyouts and consolidation going on right now in the video game industry. Those intrigulated by the Op Mincemeat story should really read one of the books on the whole topic of deception in the European theater of WWII. There are many.
Though decades old, I recall "Bodyguard of Lies" by Anthony Cave Brown to have been a good survey of the topic. Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Miles Gilton is another. Both books deal with more than the deception campaign, but are good intros to the truly amazing intel/decoding/deception efforts of the Allies in WWII.

Thanks, sis! Sexy women singing sultrily and sexily. And, Patriotically, too! What's NOT to love, there? (answer, nothin!)
And if I had a tuneful voice, I could carry the Basso Profundo score. I can hit the notes. All of them. But seldom any of them at the right bar or time in the song, or in the same pitch as the other singers. I don't sing in the shower. Curdled water is just plain hell on the plumbing.
Quick status report on the repair. Couldn't get the damned pin out of the connector, so there went the easy way. But it turned out the local O'Reilly's had the connector w/pigtail, so I grabbed it. Stripped the various wires, alligator clipped them together temporarily, fired up the car and it ran beautifully.
Then, realized the wire I had for the splicing wasn't copper and I didn't know *what* it was. So, being concerned about possible longterm dissimilar metals corrosion, I ordered up some of the 22AWG copper stuff and when that gets here, I can wrap it up.

The Helldiver was supposed to replace the Dauntless. Navy said in 1939 we want this now and that two of them will fit on a standard carrier elevator with one foot of clearance all around. Curtis was over committed building P-40s so the XSB2C was built in a cow barn on a fairgrounds and it was jinxed forever by the design requirements.
Mid '43 and USS Essex, the flagship of the new class of carriers, was supposed to take the SB2C to war. But it was such a steaming pile of cr@p that the Helldivers were replaced with SBDs. Capt. J. J. Clark recommended the program to be terminated and all Helldivers turned into anchors. But the Navy persisted. By the time of the Battle of the Philippine Sea most carriers had the Helldiver. Only Lexington and Enterprise still had SBDs. The night time strike at Ozawa's retreating carriers meant 51 SB2C-1Cs were lost which hastened the arrival of the improved SB2C-3.

Windows NT, which became XP and now Windows 10 has cmd.exe, the command interpreter. They even put a somewhat scaled down version that would run in 32-bit mode of Windows 9x. I have a version or two of that archived somewhere.
Any Win 10 will have cmd.exe lurking. MS decided to make a much fancier, more powerful command prompt which became PowerShell, and that is now up to version 7.1 They even went cross-platform with it, and there are Linux versions of Powershell. They even have a MacOS version.
When talking Linux, while there are more command interpreters than you can shake a stick out, bash (Bourne Again Shell) remains *the* shell.

Perhaps so, but it's not one that needs to be beaten like a dead horse.
How it usually plays out here is this:
1) Someone posts some actual vaccine-related news.
2) A dozen people jump in with "Well, I'M not getting it!"
The second part of that serves no useful purpose. It's just virtue-signaling.

449 I am hardly an anti-vax nut, but damned if I'm gonna take this mRNA vaccine, the first one ever approved for humans. I will wait a decade or two until I see what the unknown (no one could have foreseen!) and long term effects are.
You're gonna shoot me up with some fancy concoction that hijacks my immune cells to make pieces of the virus protein antigens, which is then supposed to illicit an immune response.
Sounds like the plot of B grade sci-fi horror flick. I'll wait until the other guinea pigs have taken it.

I think it's fake news. What do you think about this conspiracy theory: the Titanic never sank, it was a gigantic insurance fraud. The ship was sailed back to Europe, repainted, had some minor cosmetic work done, and sailed out as one of her "sister" ships. No one actually died.
Some facts in favor of this theory: shipping lanes from London to NYC have been more or less the same for hundreds of years. We know the location where the Titanic sunk. Do we have any other incidents in the history of the world of not just pack ice, but an actual iceberg floating that far south?
Why didn't the lookouts have binoculars? Seems weird, no? Would be hard to do a good job as a look out without binoculars, I would think.
I'm sure others can think of other good reasons why the Titanic sinking is fake news.

Steve, they do a massive amount, I'll agree.
They also use "contractors" to handle their shipping needs.

Minor point of order: The Brits were always more into the sword and the axe for dealing with problematic aristocrats, not so much the national razor. I know, I know, Halifax Gibbet and all that...but it was never used on Big People, and sporadically at that.
No doubt there's plenty of HEMA types that would be willing to take care of it, though. Henry VIII famously brought in a French swordsman because he wanted Anne Boleyn to get a quick, clean death, not a dozen bloody strokes by a half-drunk headsman as was unfortunately rather common at that time.

I think that Walmart still has them beat on sales volume.
On retail shipping volume, there's no comparison.
On the other hand, Walmart has to deal with the foot traffic from those retail customers, which is a volume scaling problem all of its own.
Someone once used the term "Walmart scale". If I remember right, it was framed as, more or less, "If some truly bizarre weird-assed customer interaction happens one time out of a million, it happens ten times a day at Walmart".

I fondly remember my first Pocket PC. It had a stylus, 5.5" screen, no phone, no WiFi, and heavy. It was about an inch thick. At the time Laridian had published one of the first Study Bibles for the Pocket PC complete with verse cross refs, hebrew/greek lookup, Unger's Bible Dictionary, plus multiple translations for extra $. It was freaking amazing. Instead of doing my Bible study with a dozen big study books spread out across my desk I could do it all my PPC.
I started bringing my toy to church on Sunday mornings. Our pastor used a Bible the size of a Buick with a zillion postit tabs sticking out while citing Bible verse numbers so fast that nobody in the congregation could keep up but me. Nobody had seen one before and I got a some dirty looks in the pews. "Hey, is that guy is playing Nintendo in church?" Heh.

Wasn't the main cause of the accident, but certainly didn't help.

Indeed it is. But I'd argue that they're more like the
"husk" of a cell than a true cell after that occurs.
They don't really even do any self-repair, and of course can't reproduce. They do one simple job (carrying oxygen) until they get worn out and then they get recycled.

Right. It takes your brain a second to realize "shit, that was a joke. Oh, and it was hilarious." Which is always funnier then being led to a punchline.
It's also why the style of "call back" jokes where you get a totally different punchline then you were expecting that ties in to a set up from earlier is so funny (Chappelle's style of humor.)
Most comedians are entirely predictable at when the punchline is coming, and their cadence in the way they tell the story or whatever builds up to a crescendo, and even if it is a kind of funny joke, you're let down by the joke, because it's never as funny as you think it's going to be. Also kind of related to why watching a comedy show on netflix is so much different then watching one in person, since everyone around you laughing signals to you that it's time to laugh, even if it's not that funny.

Joe Rogan talks about that a lot -- how comedy shows are "SO MUCH BETTER" because you get the energy in the room.
I think he's missing the point. Watching a comedy show on TV, without a lot of crowd noise is oftentimes less funny, because you don't have the cue to laugh like you do live.
But in reality if people are not laughing at your netflix special, you're probably not that funny.
Kind of like watching any show with a laugh track when they remove the laugh track. Not funny in the least. Just dumb, canned one liners with awkward pauses in between them.

I met an original Monty Pythonite when they did talks at Universities (80s). Part of the contract was that they had to go at "reception" and talk to students of the appropriate Speakers Committee and drink the cheapest white wine that French ammeliorated somewhat by cheese and some form of cracker..
One pretentious twat-set said "Oh your humor is so intellectual".
The fellow looked at me (because we had been talking about the Nature of Humour)

657 If any of you remember, I mentioned my comical interactions with the stupid alarm/security system they installed in this house (which I didn't want, but I didn't tell them not to). I just powered it off and disabled the whole thing, cause they gave me no access codes.
I'm sure the idea is to make you have to call them, and then they'll try to make you sign up for some plan which involves some ridiculous monthly fee. No thanks.
Yesterday, I decided to research it, and see if I could get into it, reset it, etc. I powered it up, and was going to try to some possible default access codes.
Well, during that power up process, with the keypad booting itself up, the cat came in with a live mouse. I had to take care of that. During that time, the thing booted, remembered it was armed last time, and the time out ran.
The alarm went off. Loud annoying son of a bitch.

660 Turns out the alarm required battery power to operate, so all you have to shut it up is yank the battery. When it was going off like some banshee, I briefly thought of ripping it off the wall and throwing it in a gulley.
Anyway, long story, but I got it disarmed. It was still defaulted to the master use code of, you guessed it, 1234.
The bastards did however, change the "installer code" from the default, and I think they've locked me out of programming it. There may be something else I can try, but that's what it looks like.
There is a way to reset it from scratch, but that can't be done from the touchsceen control they put in. You need one of the older style manual keypads. There is probably some way to do it on the control board itself, but they keep that close to their vest.

699 The Iranian Ratface's name hasn't come up much. I suspect it's Stews and Rice running the show this go round. Samantha Power's name also keeps popping up, as well as hubby Sunstein...
the shitshow must go on. Oh well.
At least Samantha looks like her long term meth usage is aging her quick. May she croak in peace.

I remember the Kinkster's books always gave a prominent spot to his cats. He preferred cats over women, he said, because the cats never used the word "relationship" or asked him "where is this going?"

That Palm Pilot mention got me remembering being a kid and how absolutely gobsmacked I was when the first calculators (with their red numbers) came out. It was next to magic in my mind how it could do math! I just remember being blown away by them in grade school.

REPORTER: "The number of migrants detained has tripled... Is that accurate?"
PSAKI: "Those numbers are tracked by DHS. I'm just suggesting that you talk to them..."
REPORTER: "We talked to them... They won't confirm the numbers."
PSAKI: "Ask them again... It's not our program"

Aside from union workers in oil and gas, unions are on a roll with Biden - government now fully backs their pensions and the PRO act is a blow against right to work, especially if they organize illegals, who aren't supposed to be able to work give their status. Crazy times.

After Trump cleaned up the migrant issue at the border we had a short period of peace. Now, the Fraud Administration has created a vast new surge of illegals flooding across the border. Up until two days ago the Biden people denied the existence of the problem, but last night they issued an appeal for volunteers to come help at the border. Volunteers to do what? These incompetent assholes turned border quiet into an intractable disaster in a month.

Looking at this post reminds me of my previous
roommate! He continually kept preaching about this.
I'll send this information to him. Pretty sure he'll have a great read.
Many thanks for sharing!
