If the van is there 10 times when you go out, and not there 10 other times, you brain will tell you “It's always there”, even though it's only there half the time, because those times when it was gone don't feed into the pattern your subconscious is looking for.

T yields are going up as well, and ZeroHedge was going on about something crazy that happened in the repo market. There was a short squeeze on the 10 yr T-note, and caused them to scramble. IOw, they were again short selling more Ts than were really avaible to them.

Had the last 2 hours of a 12 hour woke training today and the wokinister brought up how the (horrible) Republican legislature here was proposing banning trans from competing in sports in school. Meh, if feminists want to see women made second fiddle to pretend women who am I to fight them?

But I am still stymied on the rear door window regulator. It stalls, repeatedly, going up or going down, and if you give it a push or pull, it goes on again. I think the pinion is trying to jump a tooth on the sector gear. I will look for another regulator at the junkyard. Got an inside mirror today for ten dollars.

That sounds like an internal thermal circuit breaker in the motors. Change out the felt weather stripping, or simply remove it and try again. There may be too much drag on the window causing a thermal overheat in the motor housing.

Unfortunately, father of Doof passed away 21 years ago. So I have been without him in my 30s and 40s. He died before the younger of.my 3.sons was born. And my older son was a baby when my dad died. So neither of my kids knew him. But his influence is still very strong.

I was just reading some more, and I don't really understand it all. But basically, the Fed printed about $3.5T in extra money over the last year (to deal with the pandemic). The federal govt has been running over $1T in cash balances at it's "checking account*. That number is now about $1.5T.
I remember wondering what the hell they were doing that for, thinking it was joint action with the Fed to keep the reserves low, while allowing the Fed to buy dogshit to "save the world".
Well, they're talking about winding that down, and that means $1.5T in cash is going to flood the system. If the Fed tries to pull it back, it's going to have start selling, which is going to dump mucho Ts on the market.
They are in a bind. A hell of a bind. The money printing chickens are about to come home to roost.

Point taken. "Fiat" currency is defined by the crypto community as "currency that's worth something because XYZ government says so". None of it, cryptocurrency included, is backed by anything (deletes a fifteen-page monologue on "proof of work / proof of stake" in the case of the cryptos). That said, both the USD and BTC have a lot of people who believe that they're worth something, so they're worth something.

Most likely lubrication, or lack thereof. The window motor may contain a thermal circuit breaker that opens the circuit quickly if the window movement stalls. That is supposed to protect the motor from burnout, and kids' necks from being severed. If you see the glass tilting forward or back as it stalls, that can throw it into a bind.
And some newer vehicles have the breaker function mediated by the body control module. It senses an spike in current draw to the window motor, and shuts it down.
Some silicone spray lube on the rubber channels in which the glass travels may help.

Funny story, then again maybe not. My grandfather ended up needing emergency brain surgery. He hit his on a cabinet door, and ended up with fluid on the brain, or some shit. Anyway they had to drill into his head a relieve the pressure. For some reason they never really did a good patch so he had a dent on top of his head that looked like it was done with a ball peen hammer. Anyway, for the few here who actually met my brother in texas you'll understand. We were at a family gathering and my brother nods in the direction of my grandfather and says "look at my man grandpa over there, he looks like Mr potato head where you snap in the hat".

When a gov defaults a whole lot of things change. Some for the good.
Let's not forget that the debt number is just that; a number. And the people that are owed are not exactly the salt of the earth. Plus they made money for all the years AND their money was protected in a way that no bank could ever do. They used that money/credit for real goods.
And almost all the money we spent came directly or indirectly back to most of us in some manner. Sure the rich got richer but they had to pay someone to mow their lawn and clean their clothes and make their jets and automobiles.
It's not a zero sum game in that a functioning economy is a plus for everyone involved. The only people who get hurt are those who cannot participate fully or who are unwilling to do so.

The US govt. will never default. It will inflate the dollar to zero before it does that.
But won't the Fed stop that, isn't the Fed supposed to prevent wanton printing? In theory supposedly, but if they opposed it, they'd just do away with them and take over the printing directly (think AOC in charge of monetary policy).
They'd just put a gun to the head of anyone who opposed them.
They will try to keep the checks flowing, and will start direct, wanton money creation if they have to, with the Fed bulldozed.
That is the end game and a fate that is just about sealed now. We've crossed the horizon.

Thing about Bitcoin, is that it is useless without the Internet connectivity to access it. That is something the regime could easily disrupt. They can try to confiscate gold, but gold is easily hidden, and quite portable, so they can never get all of it. And the more they confiscate, the more the value of the remaining free gold increases.

That's what has me re-examining everything regarding wealth. I haven't bought a stock since TARP - because that's when I saw that game as rigged. Haven't bought real estate because, contrary to what I used to think, it doesn't matter that they aren't making more dirt. Government controls it all - we just pay to each other for the right to rent it from Uncle Sam.
I've been taught, during Corona, that just piling cash is also a waste of time. It's changed my entire thinking about everything related to money. It's also settled my opinion about most people working in the finance industry - they mostly ain't to be trusted.

As I've posted before, the inevitable end is that there are no women's sports, because they are inherently discriminatory and sexist. The logical conclusion is that all sports are coed, and if there are some with two X chromosomes who can't make the basketball team, then so be it. (There are two other logical conclusions: Diana Moon Glampers-style handicapping of all athletes to equalize their potential (sort of like weights on a racehorse) and a rigid quota system (e.g., all basketball teams will consist of 3 XX's and 2 XY's in two random quarters and 2 XX's and 3 XY's in the other two quarters)). Pairs figure skating can be any two people, they do not have to be chromosomally different. Just completely eliminate and distinction between athletes based on sex.
After all, there aren't women's fire departments, women's police departments, and women's infantry platoons. They tell us that women are as good as men in any occupation except sports. That is a distinction that can't be justified.

I had a lefty for Property class in first year of law school. He taught a valuable lesson that property ownership had three attributes: 1. The right of the owner to use the property as he sees fit; 2. the tight of the owner to the fruits produced by the property (the usufruct, for a fancy term), and 3. the right to dispose of it. If the government can regulate how you use it, tax the usufruct as much as it desires, and regulate what you do with it, then it is irrelevant who has the title -- the government is actually the de facto owner. This is how modern socialism works.

It's not really going down swiftly. This summer's prices are going to suck. My first hockey game - Caps in Spring of '84. I'll never forget how amazing it was when I got inside to my seat. The cold coming off the ice, the smell of the ice, how bright it was in the otherwise-darkened Cap Centre, the acoustics.... I've been to live football, baseball, basketball, and hockey and the only one I actually would rather be at is hockey. It's an experience live. There's just no way to duplicate on TV the sensory experience of Scott Stevens checking someone into next week.

This gets a little obtuse, but back in the day a woman in Korea who was over 60 could do anything she wanted to do and everyone tolerated it. In a Confucian culture there are things you are supposed to do in every 12-year period of your life, and being a woman was so hard that by the time you'd completed your fifth 12-year cycle, you had literally made it. You deserved complete indulgence for anything you did.

HUGE pain in the ass to get the water drained, as sediment kept wanting to clog the drain valve, and we had to cure that a couple times with compressed air blowback of the drain hose. Pulled the cold water fill fitting to break a vacuum lock at the same time. Moving the emptied tank down out of the attic was still hellish, the soaked 'glass made it heavy, even while empty. New one was easier to move UP, in fact.
Made up all the plumbing joints and electrical, pressure-tested it all, drained, purged and refilled twice. Much "blackwater" at first. Beginning to end, all cleaned up, three hour job, flat. I don't think the pros would've done it any faster or more neatly. *humblebrag*

Thing about gold, it's value is almost entirely cosmetic, and if things truly go so bad that your other property and normal currencies are worthless, there aren't going to be a lot of people who care too much about some gold jewelry, or gold as an investment instrument.
And if it somehow still holds value, gold is heavy and easily detected so smuggling it or hiding it are not particularly easy things to do.

I wouldn't have put it there, either, but that's where they put it. The insulation here is spray foam, and in the attic it's sprayed to the underside of the roof deck, not at the joist-level. As a result, the attic is within the HVAC envelope, and hence did not freeze even after three days below freezing, outside. Living room temp got down to 40 degrees. Attic was 41~42 degrees. I had NO frozen or burst lines. Helps that it's all PEX, and the spray foam in the walls keeps it all nice and above 32f.
But I'll tellya. That catch pain with it's CONNECTED water drain was a lifesaver. Nary a drop had escaped.

Its value is related to its scarcity, and its durability. It does not degrade over time. And there will always be people who covet it, so a store of gold will always have value.
And you can hide gold by disguising it as something else. Cast it into wheel weights, and paint it with gray metallic paint, and you could smuggle several ounces of it across a border no problem.

@Jim, it's a good idea to fill the drain pan with about a quart of water once a month and let it run out to make sure the drain is clear. Add some vinegar if you've got some lying around. The worst time to find out the drain is clogged is when you need it.

4 is probably my favorite. The Drew Thompson storyline was so good. Had some of Art Mullen's best lines.
2 with Mags and the Bennetts is great.
5 with The "other" Crowes seemed to drag a bit.
6 was outstanding. Ending was perfect.
3 with Quarles and Limehouse was really good.
1 was very disjointed until Boyd came back into the fold.

DC, so, Capitals, whose captain, Rod Langway (as noted by another commenter above) was one of that last artistes of the hip check. They got Sylvain Cote in a trade or something towards the end of my fan-ship*, and though much smaller than Rod, he also was quite good with the hip check.
A beautiful play when it works. It's safe because the checked player's energy dissipates in falling/sliding on the ice; it's "sporting" because if the defenseman misses, you're gone, breakaway - and if he doesn't miss, it's a spectacular move that takes you out of the play.
DC fans back then were so ignorant they would boo hip checks on Capitals players - even though Langway was the captain of their team!

The sediment wasn't in drain pain, it was inside the water heater tank, itself, and kept clogging up the drain-cock valve. I had a hose going from that valve, out of the attic scuttle and into the laundry room off of the hallway, going into the washing machine drain receptacle. Made it very easy to monitor drain flow and a safe way to move the water out of the house. We kept alternating 90psi air pressure up through that hose and down through the opened-up cold water fill atop the old water heater. Kept things agitated enough so as to drain the tank, even though we couldn't get at the soaked fiberglass insulation. So, still pretty damn heavy.

Interesting. Intellectually I have to say the Mags season is the "best" just because it's such a tight story.
I actually liked 1 because the show was finding it's feet. Lots of killing and just so many great lines. The bottle episode with the hostage situation at the office is so good. The pilot is amazing, and then everything after Boyd picks up. The final shot of that season when Boyd drives off is pure fire.
6 is amazing. I liked the story, the characters, the villains, the cat and mouse between Raylan and Boyd, and the way they wrapped up the show as you said, was perfection. No show in history has a better Pilot and Finale combo.
I liked 5 better by the time I rewatched a few times. When you realize Wendy is the main character of that story, sort of like Loretta in 2, it changes things.
Every season seems to pick up in the second half, which is really how any good story goes.

Had a partial plan with a few other guys. About 10 games a year. We'd pick the games where the opposing team was of interest - Kings because Wayne, Detroit because russkis, etc.
One season, about the 5th game (February, I think), game against Toronto. Doug Gilmour was a pretty interesting player, little guy who really could carry a team and change a game. Anyway, middle of the game, 2nd period, both teams were clearly exhausted (there was a flu outbreak affecting both, as I recall), were just mailing (or dumping) it in. Climbing over the boards slower than I do, now.
A few of us had a simultaneous epiphany. The season was way too long, far too many games, quality/importance of each game greatly diluted (as today). We just looked at each other, and one guy said "I don't think I'm doing the partial plan next year", and we all agreed.
I did get a decent flow of free tickets from friends, lobbyists, etc., so giving up our plan wasn't a cold turkey thing, but I have always remembered how we all came to the same conclusion during that one game.

My recreational team did the thing a few times where you buy 50 tickets or whatever and you get to play a game on the ice before the real game, we did it a few times. We used "other" locker rooms, of course, not the Caps', not the visitors'.
The last time, we were walking off the ice back to our locker room after the end of our scrimmage and there's Al Iafrate, sitting on a folding chair, next to the glass.
In his jock/cup, with skivvies, nothing else on. Smoking.

Hockey had (has?) a distinctive sociological vibe and background - for most of history most players came from working class/middle class families in small towns in Canada. Of course one great thing about hockey is that there isn't much room for slacking. A 40 second shift, and your health in addition to your income could be on the line if you don't go 100%.
Guys get pulled or punished for appearing to slack off in the view of their coaches, but you don't have any incidents like the famous one where Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk chased after some hot-shot rookie who was trotting out his grounder, yelling at him to hustle (and being thanked by the other team's first base coach for doing so, as I recall).

I think the government is really trying to gobble up coinage right now, there are all of these little signs at checkouts asking if we are aware of the national coin shortage etc. I am continually asked at a self-checkout to donate my spare change to the cause du jour of the left. Was going to some IHL games here (San Diego) two years ago and last year (last thing I was planning to do that was cancelled by the virus was a game, called off less than 24 hours ahead). Pretty good level, and seats (free) were great.
With the "youngsters" in the locker room at the pick-up game I hope resumes soon I joke that "I don't follow hockey until Memorial Day" - of course they don't get it, as pro hockey has had an 8-month season, ending in effing mid-June (!!!), most of their lives.
Reviewing UToob videos, I regret missing Datsyuk. Unbelievable. But I did see Central Army (Soviet national team) play in person, twice, fortunately.

Langway was a stud. He actually did score a bit early in his career, but chose to focus on defense and became one of the all-time greats. The Caps' "Secretary of Defense". He, Stevens, and Al Jensen in goal got them to the playoffs every year and ensured a narrow defeat in the 1st or 2nd round. (sigh) Doof: you have no idea what it was like to be a Caps fan when they were regularly one of the bottom 5 in the league. But man, when Poile made that key trade, things got exciting. I listened to every game, home or away, on the radio, from '81 until the end of the '85 season when I got paroled from home (college). I vividly recall listening to a game, February 5, 1984, doing chores and enjoying the surprising f*ck out of the friggin' Capitals scoring 9 goals against Edmonton! (9-2) 3-2 entering the 3rd period and we dumped 6 more biscuits in the basket.

Best player today? This here Caps fan will say Alex Ovechkin. Best goal scorer of his era. Might have a shot at Gretzky's all-time goal record. Should at least top Gordy Howe for 2nd.
So many great players. I love watching Patrick Kane (Chicago). I despise the Penguins but Sidney Crosby is damn good - despite being a pansy. I don't like the Bruins but David Pastrnak is incredible. Same with Stamkos and Kucherov for Tampa Bay. I could keep going for quite a while!

It was done with an SQL injection exploit. A pretty well known one that anyone with any sense should've known how to guard against. But Gab's creator/coders didn't. In fact, it was so lame one might wonder if it was intentional.

I'm now practicing for some shit that will become necessary. First, I'm going to play with rolling out my own email server (using Linux of course). I've done it before years ago and need to play to relearn.
I'm also going to play with setting up a newsserver (newsgroup, the ancient "forums"). Same software can do both, at least some of it.
And play with setting up the router to forward it and all that and relearn how to get it all working.

Now many ISPs frown on residential customers running their own email and other type servers. Too much traffic they fear, and they want you to have to pay for it.
So you likely can't use the standard ports for it, which I wouldn't want to use anyway. I'll set them up on some obscure ports.
As I've been saying, we're going to soon need an underground communication network, and this is part of the skills to participate in that.
Again, I suggest you all learn this stuff as much as you can.

What are you running now? Windows? If you got the CPU and memory (and you should have unless you got something really old), look into virtual machines. Windows includes Hyper-V, which runs under Win10, but it's a big thing. I'd recommend VirtualBox for a hypervisor. My favorite one, in fact.
Anyway, you can play with installing Linux of whatever flavors you like in virtual machines.
A VM is basically a computer emulating another computer. With hardware assistance which is standard on everything now.

I would really recommend you go with Virtual Box. Hyper-V is really a bit too much candy for nickel. Virtualbox is a lot friendlier.
Basically a virtual machine and the CPU hardware extensions create a "Matrix", where you can virtualize a computer inside a real computer (the bare metal as it the jargon calls it). Now, you have virtual hard drives, which are just files on the bare metal OS.
You create a virtual "Matrix" computer to run various OSes under the "real" OS, running on the bare metal.
They're even now getting into VM "nesting". A virtual machine running inside another virtual machine, running inside.....bare metal.

You can't really screw up your computer beyond the normal risk of installing any software. Go to the virtualbox website (Oracle does it).
Virtual machines are just basically files on your computer. You have a configuration file for each one, plus some state information. And then the virtual hard drive files.
You boot up the virtual machine, and everything is going on with those files. The standard setup of Ubuntu, Fedora, or any of the others should work fine.
Just pick the size of the virtual hard drive (which will take up space on your real filesystem and hardrive).
Virtualbox is aware of all the standard Linux OSes and will give you appropriate defaults (most of the time) for setting up a VM.

You can hose a virtual machine all the time, and it does no damage to your real machine. It's just a virtual Matrix inside files.

Regular spaghetti, angel hair, etc... meh.
Flat pasta is okay in dishes where it is submerged in sauces (lasagne) or actually stuffed with sauce (ravioli).

"Snapshots" are another very useful thing possible with VMs. You have a working install of an OS and whatever else under it in a VM. Take a snapshot. Any changes past that are then stored in a separate file, which is overlaid over the first.
Screw something, destroy the OS, and you just revert back to the snapshot point, as if nothing happened.

Yeah. Just take it slow at first. Just understand the VM concept allows you to run all sorts of different OSes all under one system. You can put the virtual machine display in a smaller window, which might help to visualize what is the real OS vs the virtual machine.
For example, and I'm a lunatic. My "bare metal" system that I'm running now on this machine is Win 10 20H2 Pro x64. I've got virtualbox installed. I have about 20 different virtual machines set up. Two versions of Ubuntu and two of Fedora. And then I've got Windows 7, XP, and many others. I've got enough hardware and memory that I can run about 3 virtual machines with 4GB or so of memory to each one without affecting performance of the main system too much.
I've got a virtual Fedora running, which I keep running most of the time.

Now back to the real bare metal. I'm now running two virtual machines at the same time.
Total real memory usage is 13.4GB out of 32GB installed. Cpu usage is 45%, and that is of 6 cores. Windows 7 Chrome is updating itself as I haven't run it in a few weeks.
Main OS here is still as responsive as ever. I give three virtual CPU cores to each virtual machine.

Right now, everything has settled down. Just a few percent CPU and everything is pretty much idle now.
I can run about 3 VMs. If they all get busy, that is about the limit for my CPU. It will get boggy past that.
Now, what you can do. Well, if you want to run Linux and Windows at the same time on the same machine, this is how you do it. And it give you ultimate control. Everything, the virtual machines at least, are in their own little sandboxes that exist in regular files under the real, bare metal system.

The virtual machine is entirely virtual, just a file on the real machine. With the snapshot thing, you can do anything and revert to the original state. It's very good for malware testing. Suppose you're afraid something is malware. You can run it under a (highly sandboxed) virtual machine and see what it does. If it's something bad, no harm done, you'd just erase all the changes.

Now me, I play, but for an example of how virtualization is really used, for real work. Consider our site here, Aceofspades HQ. The actual details may vary but it goes something like this. Pixy runs on a hosting service, which provides you with your own server.
You server is a virtual one, running on perhaps who know how many real servers in a server farm. Pixy gets a certain amount of virtual RAM, virtual disk space, etc, etc, which is paid for.
Now in reality that virtual server runs on a whole bunch of different real servers, a big cluster that divided the load up to maximize its efficiency.
To Pixy, it looks like he has a dedicated server running the web site we all know and love. But it's just a virtual Matrix being run all over the place by all sorts of different physical hardware.

Um, paper currencies aren't exactly edible either.
My favorite so far - "It's heavy!!", this was actually uttered derisively by one of the money honeys on the TV, as if so many of those 400 oz good delivery bars will slow a feller down, or something. One thing about gold, it is incredibly compact for value. In bullion form most people could probably carry their net worth around in their front pocket and nobody would be the wiser.
Guys like Warren, they might have a problem. Now silver, that stuff is too bulky for any serious hard core rich guy wealth preservation.
Both are pretty good for storing and transferring wealth, particularly to family members. I am not suggesting anyone break local, state, or federal laws, simply that a few gold coins are portable wealth that can't be made worthless.

Alan Greenspan wrote a very good treatise on gold in 1966, it is a pretty good read.
Another interesting article on gold was written in the 1950s by Howard Buffet, Warren's father, who was a US congressman.
It's all moot now, they aren't going to allow anyone safe harbor as it were, to protect their wealth. It all boils down to the unit of account. It doesn't have to be gold necessarily, but there has to be a definition.
Ever notice everything has a precise definition? You never hear things like "The meter lost several millimeters in heavy trading against the yard in early trading today."

Just in the last couple days it shaved a hundred bucks or so because the FED says it doesn't care about inflation, or something. Does that make sense? It was a screaming buy at $300, but the problem is it doesn't provide a return. No interest. FDR saw to that. "Gold Bond" weren't just a powder to keep a feller clean and fresh.

It can be put into an IRA, but it has to be stored by a third party. Smoke and mirrors is not why gold should be part of your portfolio. The old school rule of thumb was 2 or 3 percent of your net worth, minus real estate, in physical gold. Look at it like insurance, or ammunition. You need some, pray you never need it.

During the cold snap a few weeks ago, we decided to turn on the big furnace, as the whole house needed heat to keep the pipes happy. I REALLY missed the wood-stove heat. It's so constant, and messing around with wood and whatnot give you something to do in winter. Not to mention its cheeriness.

In the extreme, if you have to unass the country, cross borders, silver trades at a huge discount. Nobody wants it in quantity. Too heavy to carry any significant amount. It is good for making change. Historically US dollars were preferable to gold, at least overseas.
Small gold coins are made. 1/10th oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz. I like silver, I did very well on a percentage basis with it. You make money on the buy. And know when to sell.

Yup. My son had a really bad case of the flu last February (where there are a sigbificant number of foreign students, including Chinese). He came home right before the lockdown, and then I got a milder case of the flu. Yeah, I think he had covid.
Fast forward to this February and a few of his friends test positive for covid and all in his dorm gets sent home. Got tested once, negative. No symptoms since then, and we just passed the 2 week window.
He doesn;t want the vaccine, and I OK with that.
