A Little of This. A Little of That.

Do you use flea collars on your dog? If you do please read this article!(H/T Hrothgar)

Rhonda Bomwell had never used a flea and tick collar before. Pierre, her 9-year-old Papillon service dog, was mostly an indoor animal.

Still, her veterinarian recommended she purchase one, so Bomwell went to the pet store near her home in Somerset, New Jersey, and selected Bayer’s Seresto collar.

A day later, on June 2, 2020, Pierre had a seizure, collapsing while Bomwell was making dinner. Lying on his back, the dog stopped breathing and his eyes rolled back.

Bomwell tried giving him CPR. Then she called the police. An officer helped her lift the dog into her car, and she rushed him to the hospital. Pierre died before he could receive medical treatment. Bomwell didn’t think to take off Pierre’s collar.

“I just didn’t put it together,” she said.

Bomwell isn’t alone. Seresto, one of the most popular flea and tick collars in the country, has been linked to hundreds of pet deaths, tens of thousands of injured animals and hundreds of harmed humans, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency documents show.

Yet the EPA has done nothing to inform the public of the risks.

Seresto, developed by Bayer and now sold by Elanco, works by releasing small amounts of pesticide onto the animal for months at a time. The pesticide is supposed to kill fleas, ticks and other pests but be safe for cats and dogs.

Duncan Buried Under Toys (1).jpg>

This is my boy Duncan. As you can see he is like most greyhounds in that he is relaxed to the point of comatose. Thus the reason I can stack toys on him.

Oh how adorable! What a collection of toys Duncan has. He certainly appears mistreated, while living a pampered life. Thanks for sharing today.

Hey, Mis Hum.

Put up a post on your piece, we had to put down our beloved Trixie today.

She was 16 years old, and as sweet and gentle a dog as one could wish.

Half Welsh Corgi, half German Shepherd, and don't ask me, I don't know how it happened.

Well, she and her brother Robbie, a purebred Corgi, are in doggy heaven now, chasing squirrels and cats, and getting treats to their hearts content.

We'll miss her terribly.

TANSTAAFL

So sorry to hear of your dog's passing. 16 years is a long life for a dog. And no we won't ask about her heritage. Trixie and Robby looked so dang cute together. Hopefully this little tribute will help ease the pain.

vasca (1).jpg

Hi Mis Hum,
Here is Vasca, a.k.a. A$%hole, Little Dummy and a host of other names we call him. We adopted him from the shelter 16 years ago and he's still got a few lives left in him. He'll be 17 in August. He has a couple health issues we deal with but is otherwise a happy and healthy tyrant. As you can see he owns my lap and rules all he surveys. At some point he stopped using the litter box so we started giving him treats whenever he did use it, to show our appreciation of course. Now we are fully trained to jump at the sound of him scratching in his box and attend him. He also does the cutest ear splitting shrieking in the morning when his dish is empty to make sure we feed him as soon as possible. He's a mostly benevolent dictator, only occasionally beheading an innocent house plant when left within reach. Other than that, he's a good boy.
Love the pet thread.
Signed DM

Well DM that photo is worth a thousand words. Vasca certainly has the look of Resident Cat in Chief. Glad he is doing well considering he is a Sr. Citizen now. Thanks for contributing to the Pet Thread.

Hello Horde!!

Here are a couple pictures from the new digs. Three of the senior horses enjoying a Texas sunset. Wish I could take credit for the pics, but I can’t.

First up is Rainbow. She was rescued from an island near Galveston after she was left there for 20 years with some cows.
Next is Boogie (looking the other way) and Bonnie. They are both Tennessee Walkers and have been together for almost 20 years. They were given to the rescue from a woman who became too sick to take care of them.

Thanks again for letting us post pics of the animals.

No thanks necessary MW in Texas. I thank you for your regular contributions to the thread. You are affiliated with a wonderful organization to save those wonderful horses. We thank you for sharing with us today.

8 I had the garage door open this morning and a cute little french bull dog dared enter, whereupon my 12 year old male cat Dexter, stationed nearby, delivered a swat to the nose of said doggie, who went yelping off to his master.
Cats are territorial as anything.
Dexter probably had 5 lbs. of advantage.

10 Not that I want to defend Bayer, but in late 2019 they were warning about counterfeit Seresto flea collars.

Apparently legitimate Seresto flea collars are made in Germany. Counterfeit ones are made in Biden's favorite country. One guess on its name.

And I'm sure our press would be reporting in 30-point headlines if counterfeit collars were responsible. Really sure. 100 per cent sure.

15 Heh Vasca is quite the cat. Our new to us 12 year old cat Tux will use the litterbox for peeing but mostly poops next to it. His LF leg is deformed so he is a tripod and its probably a bit hard for him to deal with litter. That may be the true reason his owners rehomed him. But "too many dogs are upsetting him" is credible as Tux has decided its fine in the basement and he has no need to come upstairs unless I forget to feed him and he has to come holler at me. But he snuggles with dad overnight, and I can live with with poop issue since he isn't leaving surprises in random places and he is peeing in the box so I don't have puddles of liquid.

20 Beautiful pets today, as always!

I was hoping that ordering my Serestos from Chewy would increase the likelihood of them being legit, as opposed to buying from random Amazon sellers. I've had good results from them; only one little weird cat has ever acted like it bothered her, so I took it right off, and use Frontline on her now.

35 Jack, the best cat that ever lived, never made litterbox mistakes. Then his back legs started becoming paralyzed, so I helped him to the cat box. When he couldn't do that, I had him in a comfy space on the bed and would wash his back end off at night. He always seemed so surprised at that. Had to let him go when it started to affect his breathing. Current cat, Fanny, is good about the litterbox but tends to puke up food.

39 Bringing up collars reminded me of my grandfathers bird dog who got into it with a raccoon who nearly drowned the dog by the collar in front of us in a pond. Dog won but got pulled under a few times before she killed it. Also had a dog get her collar snagged on a fence nearly hanging herself. I think we took the collars off after that one.

44 Bruno, our 3 month old mini schnauzer, will never wear a flea collar. My old schnauzer Hansel viscerally HATED when he had one, and Ive heard nothing but horror stories about them otherwise. That story here kinda just provides more fuel to the affirmation fire.

45 Here's my dog training dilemna: i get off work at 7 and take the dogs out. I try to stay outside with them, as they like that, but sometimes go in and do a few things. Get them in and then I want to decompress from work. But the old dog will agitate to go out again. She doesn't usually do anything but she's been a bit incontinent so I always let her out. Get them back in and she'll do it a half an hour later. Some nights, I get so irritated with them. Leaving her out longer doesn't help. For all I know, she forgets that she's been out. Any ideas?

Posted by: Notsothoreau - look forward at March 06, 2021 03:43 PM (YynYJ)

46 38. Yup, I have a large box. Possible one with shorter sides would help. But I just put the litter trapping mat upside down so it doesn't trap poop, and I can hose it off once in a while. It helps that the cat box is just in a storage room which has a painted concrete floor if Tux misses the mat. If the whole house was carpeted or had some fancy porous tiles, I would be less sanguine, but I'd figure something out.

Yes. My Golden Retriever was allergic to anything edible, to the point of chewing her skin off. Her coat was nearly gone and she itched like crazy, plus vomiting. We finally found that she could only eat salmon and sweet potatoes. She ate nothing but that for about ten years. No treats, no bones, nothing but salmon and sweet potatoes. 76 Great bunch of pets this week! Beautiful horse pics.

I can't say enough bad things about flea collars, my hate for them goes back to the early 70's, and that was before I knew they were basically nerve gas.

As I've mentioned before, my family had an end of the road house up in the hills, and at one point or another we adopted or cared for everything save for a horse. Even a goat for about 3 hours.

One evening, we were greeted with a very, very angry blue point Siamese cat, who simultaneously wanted to beg for help and kill us, It was hiding under a car making its presence known. Apparently, it was thrown out wearing a flea collar. The flea collar in turn snagged a very large branch from a scrub brush, which the cat was dragging with it. The worst part was the poor critter apparently trying to wrest itself free had put its leg through the flea collar, and now had this thing sawing it's leg off just under its arm pit. It was horribly infected and gangrene.

Of course, the ONLY time critters show up in distress is on a weekend evening in the pouring rain in the dead of winter. (continued)

I vividly know that and I'll suffer that decision the rest of my life. I cannot scream this loud enough:

EUTHANASIA IS NOT THE BEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR PET!

It is poison and the root of the word "gift" in English is the same as the word "gift" in German, and "gift" in German means "POISON".

Euthanasia is a complex procedure. It is NOT as simple as clicking your heels 3 times and saying "there's no place like Rainbow Bridge". Sometimes it is necessary, like when my prior cat, Toonses, developed liver/pancreas cancer and would've died in utter agony without it. But pets do die naturally and without pain, and it is incumbent on all pet parents/owners (whatever term you prefer) to educate themselves on what can be a barbaric and painful procedure. And NEVER allow a vet to do a heart stick unless in the same condition you'd have it done to you.

So, luckily the branch acted as a handle to pull the very angry, very large cat out from under the car. Threw a towel over 15 lbs of pure anger, and drove it to the vet.

Somehow, the vet managed to save his leg. I also found out that it had a BAD crate experience, because when the adoptive family showed up - well not hilarity ensued. We had only travelled with him on lap - he was much friendlier once sewn up and feeling less pain.

He did ok on salmon but like everything else we tried - home cooked, raw, exotic, vegi, organic, etc., it would work for 3-4 months then the indigestion would hit again until finally 2 weeks ago he started seizures. The hydorlyzed protein "fools" his immune system from thinking is actually protein. We'll see.

I still feel terrible guilt at the loss of my little girl from stomach cancer. The treatments she received took her way beyond the predicted time if we HAD gone ahead with chemo. She was happy and playful until the last few days. She took a terrible turn over the weekend, exacerbated by my horrible ex who insisted on taking her out in the baking sun wine tasting. She was in great distress the evening before she passed, and the next morning was terrible. I had a call in to one of the "at home" people, but she passed on her own terms before that could happen.

I did put down my mother's dog recently, and it was quite peaceful. But I'm a coward, and am well aware of things not going as planned. I'm sort of glad my other dog (the sibling) dropped dead from a heart attack. It's really a call no pet owner wants to make, and I wish they never had to.

He and his brother the big black Wolf have been living on Purina "Gentle" dry food (ironic name, in their case). The Rx was the only thing that has nearly stopped Chekov's occasional diarrhea from his food allergy. So far, though, he has not had any real trouble.

Last year, when she got Maceo (a smallish, orange Main coon rescue), he had survived mast cell cancer but there was a chance it could return and he had other health issues so he was unadoptable. She met him and they got along fabulously. She insisted on adopting him (but needed my $ help) and said that even if his cancer returned and was incurable, he deserved to be loved and cared for. Who was I to refuse? He's thriving today and hopefully for a long time. He also really likes me. : - >

116 As for fleas, I've been putting the Revolution or similar topical stuff on the cats for several years. Flea-bombing the entire apartment while they are out at the vet, then cleaning up afterward, has kept the fleas from coming back.

You have to be careful with the flea stuff. When I rescued the late Siberian Angelique, we treated her with the pet-store stuff from Hartz Mountain. She started to twitch and shiver violently. We washed her off, and she was okay, but what if we hadn't been there to see her reaction? I've never used any of their products since.

120 Good Saturday afternoon, horde!

I used a Seresto flea collar on the feral cat what wouldn't stay indoors. I used it after everything else failed--the drops didn't help, and he wouldn't eat an edible. It killed the fleas, and he didn't seem to suffer any ill effects from it.

Foodwise, we put a lot of effort into cooking the dog food ourselves, because Tank was always allergic to something in the commercial foods. Vet said it may be cross-contamination from the manufacturing process.

Because he is so susceptible to developing allergies, we rotate between duck, rabbit, lamb, and fish with brown rice, veggies, and berries. I try to make sure he has a variety of proteins. All the skin issues have finally cleared up. Still have the paws to clear up.

Posted by: April at March 06, 2021 05:03 PM (OX9vb)

121 Oh, and for the paw and skin situation, I've started giving him an epsom salt bath weekly. It seems to help. I can only keep him in the tub for about five minutes before he gets antsy, but even five helps for a couple of days.

Wonder if I could get him to just soak his paws?

When I got home I put the collar on Bella and in about 3-4 minutes she started throwing up along with trying to breathe. I remember thinking when I took the flea collar out of the package it smelled very strong of chemicals, but, I thought it's Hartz so it has to be good. I immediately cut the collar off and brought her outside. I washed her face and neck off. It took about 15-20 minutes for her to get back to normal. I thought
