It's okay, though seems drawn out and slow. There's four seasons but I can see myself losing patience with it and bailing after the end of season one.
I read the book in high school and don't remember too much about it (usually a bad sign) but I do remember it was a maybe under 200 pages novel, so they've gotta be doing a lot of scene stuffing to get 4 seasons out of it.
It is interesting in one way. The constant low level dread that the American population lives under seems to be the model of the future pursued by Our Betters/Democrats/Communists.

The non-MAGA people were mostly there to clash with antifa.
Leading up the protest, there was a lot of chatter on the FBI boards (we've since learned they got a stand down order from the DNC) that they were going to infiltrate the MAGA rallies. Some of the alt right people have heavily infiltrated these antifa chat groups (the antifa types are not very security conscious, for some reason. I guess they're not worried about going to jail, oddly.) and tipped off the militia / proud boys types that antifa was planning on being at the rally. I have to imagine it sucks, yes. But I don't think they can get fired, and I think most companies make up the pay between national guard pay and their normal pay, so a bunch of them probably aren't too upset about sitting around doing nothing all day while getting paid to hang out with their buddies. I know I've said it before, but guarantee someone who is "connected" got the contract, and it eventually got subbed out to some shithole operation that has no real way of adequately providing what the contract demands, and are cutting as many corners as possible to try to at least plausibly pretend to be fulfilling the contract. In the meantime, whoever the "middlemen" are are making a bunch of money, the feds are spending a bunch of money, the caterer is doing okay, and the troops get fed shit.
So kind of a win / win / sort of win / lose situation, which is good enough for government work.

They are not nationalized. They are doing some mutual aid thing. DC National Guard requested their help. As I understand, some funding (normal funding) is coming from their home states, and supplemental funding is coming from DC National Guard, which really means the federal government.

I have to imagine it sucks, yes. But I don't think they can get fired, and I think most companies make up the pay between national guard pay and their normal pay, so a bunch of them probably aren't too upset about sitting around doing nothing all day while getting paid to hang out with their buddies. It's weird because it's DC, I don't know for sure, but I think that the request came from the mayor of DC, not anyone in the federal government. It would be much cleaner if it were a state involved.
Legally, there's a big distinction between the president calling up the national guard (in which case they're active duty federal troops, and fall under posse comitatus) and a governor calling them up (in which case they are a "state militia" and follow whatever their local laws are on the issue)

Mayor of DC is not in their Chain of Command at all.
They work directly for the President, who has delegated his authority to the Pentagon.
But, if the Pentagon is using said Guard authority to NOT Nationalize troops... then who pays? Because the DC Guard is paid for by??? yup, the Pentagon.
But Federalized Troops cannot enforce US Law, because of the Posse Comitatis Act.... so my guess is this Legal ambiguity was done with a purpose, but is also why they are not being given proper support, because there really IS NO CHAIN OF COMMAND.

I've known for years that America hasn't been a free country in any real sense of freedom since at least the 1930s. But that within the space of a few short years - after the Long March which prepared the way - how we wen't from "America, Fuck Yeah!" to "America, Stay Safe!" still astonishes me.

*biden may have given authority over the National Guard currently stationed in DC to the mayor. Or, given authority to the mayor of VA and/or MD NG. Honestly can't remember.
In any event, the Guard in DC is without proper leadership from up on high. Which is by design.

No, it gets me out of having to pay taxes and a 10% penalty from an early Roth IRA withdrawal (I'm 29). In last year's CARES ACT they allowed people to take a loan from their IRA's penalty free if they had lost hours due to COVID quarantine, had a job offer rescinded or start date delayed, or they or anyone in their family got COVID. I was out of work up until March of last year and made a stupid decision in Jan-2020 to take money out of my Roth IRA in order to avoid rising up more CC debt. I'm hoping to get COVID before tax day in order to qualify for the tax relief.

There's some estate tax stuff that's already pretty good at preventing the dodges if they're so inclined (Europe doesn't allow the trust estate tax dodge). Since it's already been done once, no reason it couldn't be done again.

You're missing my point.
The national guard serves two roles: one, in which their under the federal, normal, chain of command. In that role, they cannot do any law enforcement in the US.
The other role, their chain of command culminates with their governor.
In extraordinary circumstances (let's say a really bad hurricane), one governor can call on other governors to send their National Guard people over to help. The troops still report to their respective governors, and in all actuality, the pentagon is doing a lot of the logistics, but they're not technically called up for federal active duty.
Which is clean and makes sense when you're dealing with any entity other than DC. In this case, I think the mayor of DC sent out a request for mutual aid, and DC is paying for the lodging and food and whatnot (all the additional expenses), but not their salaries or normal expenses that the states have to pay anyways. But they do not report to the President in their role as "state militiamen," only in their role as federal troops. Right now, their respective governors are the top of their chains of command.

I remember reading something about this not long ago. The D.C Guard is special because D.C. is not a state. All laws within there are federal laws, even the traffic laws. There is this home rule thing where they delegate authority to a mayor and city council and shit like that, but it's all federal authority.
The President controls them ultimately, but they do some fiction of handing a "governor" role to some high Pentagon official.
This "governor" would be the one who would "ask" the President to send in the Guard, as it has to be done in the 50s states.

Errr, not really the case in the US.
More or less, if I put all your money in an irrevocable trust, the government can't touch it (for estate tax purposes) because it's not your money technically, even if you are the trustee while you're alive.
Revocable trust gets trickier and is state dependent.

I was able to find a little bit about this. The Secretaries of the Army and Air Force, via law are delegated authority to "control" the DC Army Guard, and DC Air Guard. In this capacity, they act like a state governor inside the district.
It's POTUS who is the ultimate commander of the DC Guard, but there is this delegation business.
