A Little More Of This, And A Little More Of That...

finsandmore1.jpg

I know that current cars are better in every objective metric. They are faster, more nimble, safer, have far more conveniences, and the seats are absolutely more comfortable. It's all true, but there is something to be said for some of the wilder looks from the bygone years of car design.

Do I want one? No. I'll take a 1966 Mustang that has been gutted and replaced with a modern car, leaving only the gorgeous exterior, but that's about it. That doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the undeniable style of the older cars.

An added benefit of a glimpse of that age is the redolence of our youth, and that is usually amusing.

But don't forget, there were a fair number of clunkers like this one!

Uglycar111.jpg

And something quite amusing below the fold...

'Sticking out' you query?
Yeah, the cars are too long for the 'standard' length garage; so, they have been sticking out for the 29years we've lived in this house.

I remember sliding from my side of the backseat, near the door, all the way to my brother when Dad or Mom took a sharp turn. Plus whoever was youngest sat on the hump, which seemed to have the thinnest amount of cushion, but at least you could squeeze your feet against it to prevent from sliding.

My favorite car was a '71 Oldsmobile Delta 88 which wintered in someone's garage. IIRC Dad sold it in '93 for a mint.

Me too. The boys in Real (American!) Football gear is clever.

It had to be done in a pretty tame environment, such as Belgium. It could be catastrophic to do this in a city in a open/concealed carry US state!

Agreed... but that's how she looks at it.

Periodically here in the Bluegrass someone will put an old daily driver up for sale that might be worthwhile. I've seen some Oldsmobile's and Buick's that were the poor stepchildren of Pontiac or Chevy muscle cars of the late 60's and early 70's. Ratty, but...

62 As a young teenager, i mowed grass for money. Purchased a 2nd hand 1954 Chevy 3100 for $225. It had 115,000 miles on it. Over the years, i rebuilt it a total of three times keeping it original each time, even the shitty 6v electrical system. The only modifications i made to that truck were a rear view mirror, a second tail light, and turn signals.

Sold it about three years ago for $4k, cash.

I don't miss it. I especially don't miss the vapor lock it would get when hot, or the 1/3 steering wheel rotation slack in the sterring gear box, even after building back up the gears and teeth in the gear box with stainless steel welding rods.

No pedestrians or vehicles IN that plaza and only one cyclist seen going into the immediate area when the button is pushed (in this take). There must have been out-of camera, city-erected road blocks to keep random drivers from entering the "stage" area. Also, how many pedestrians and cafe patrons had to be shooed-away from asking questions while the pylon and sign were placed?

I still enjoy this, and now would love to see a 'behind the scenes" video for it.

104 Yep, Guy Mohawk! Resto-mods are the thing nowadays. For those who don't know what they are, they are classic cars with modern drivetrains, electronics, sound systems, interiors, etc. Some are lightly modified and some are just the shells with all new innards.

Husband and I have been watching televised car auctions for nearly 20 years. When resto-mods first appeared, the sellers took a bath because sale prices were never close to the costs of the build. Buyers prioritized originality.

Then the prices equalized...and now the resto-mods are hot. Totally original cars, which are even rarer now, don't come near the selling price of quality resto-mods.

But my first car-crush was a 1971 Maserati Ghibli Spyder. I would still love to have one.

They just don't seem safe on roads surrounded by 2000+ pound cars. But safer than a motorcycle I suppose, except for being trapped inside the little canister.

I agree with you on the older autos. I love the old mustangs and camaros. Still, I think if I could have a car from that era I'd choose an old Karmann Ghia.

Yes, cars these days are better than back then (there always seemed to be an element of mystery on cold days... would the car start?). But we sure lost a lot in the tradeoff.

Lots of history with that car. Drove it until I bought my '06 Mustang GT in March of 2006. The GT has 356,000 miles on it, the Chevelle a total of 676,000 miles, with one engine swap and trans rebuild.

I'm not CBD, but here's The New Oxford American Dictionary on "redolent":

[predicative] (redolent of/with) strongly reminiscent or suggestive of (something): names redolent of history and tradition.

literary: strongly smelling of something: the church was old, dark, and redolent of incense.

archaic or literary: fragrant or sweet-smelling: a rich, inky, redolent wine.

Both kids in the front seat, the girl was little and sitting on the boys lap, both in a seatbelt. None of them wete badly injured. Hubby and the boy got some scrapes, but the girl didnt have a scratch on her. When the wrecker dropped it at home it was obviously totalled. Got my first '98 Forrester and totaled it in two weeks (walked away with one scratch and one bruise) and got another Forrester. That's the one I still have. When it dies I plan to get a Crosstrek because I can order a manual transmission. I can't believe how many people ask me if I want to sell my Forrester, and I live in Texas. Idaho I could understand.

The KBB was about a grand and to fix the tranny was 1800, plus the A/C compressor needed replaced too, not to mention the front end work needed after hitting the deer.

Subaru still does on its Crosstrek in the lower trims, and you don't get a lot of tech. Subie doesn't think their Eyesight system pairs well with manual, so you don't get it.

Pony car with fuel injection is achievable without spending enormous sums of money. Aftermarket fuel injection has dropped significantly in price.
Most of the perceived unreliability is because most people have forgotten or never knew how to tune a carb.
It is much easier if you want to do some work yourself... if you don't then you should not buy an antique automobile... or win the lottery.
Upgrades to an old car with good bones do not all need to be done at once, I pick a project to complete every winter, and enjoy the vehicle every summer.

I live where they don't rust, the engines on these last 250k or more of you change the oil, and although I don't rebuild engines I can do things like window regs and alternators and such. I pay cash so have no payments and have things fixed and come out way ahead. Last August I fell into a 71 Olds 98 four door cause the price took a big fall...now that is easy and fun to work on. My wife won't drive a big car so she has a 12 xB. I think "modern" cars are just too complicated and expensive. My cars all together cost less than the xB did. I have no plans of getting anything newer ever.

Sorry you had a better chance of surviving a car accident in a fifties cars than one of today's go cars.

412 no one loves Rush more than I . And I have had differences with him over the years. We disagreed on Softwood lumber, Dubai Ports and several other issues. But that man was a national treasure. Everyone says he can't be replaced, but they could never have been anymore correct.

I recall listening to him in the 90s on college school buses. Same time every day, the buses always played Paul Harvey and Rush. Today that would be a crime of some sort, back then, it was called the driver playing what he wanted.

There will never be another Rush and that is a shame. It is also the highest compliment you can pay to a man, at least to his professional life.

466 I'm a credentialed automotive writer and can find something I like about just about any car, new or old.

The problem with restomods is that you're still using a body that was designed without crash safety in mind. With a modern drivetrain and suspension, that restomodded '65 Mustang can go a lot faster than the original, on the straights and on the curves. It may have all of the modern performance and technological advantages but it's still using 55 year old architecture.

Are vintage cars cool? Absolutely. Would I want my grandkids driven around in them regularly? Absolutely not. I want my kids and grandkids to drive in cars with more airbags than seats.

I have a 1966 Lotus Elan, said by Gordon Murray (designer of the McLaren F1) and Jay Leno (who owns a F1 and 2 Lamborghini Miuras) to be the best sports car ever made. The only thing between my ribs and the bumper of the car that's going to crush them is a thin fiberglass door panel and some interior trim.

467 There we go. The Republican Party without a few elites is big enough.

468 Growing up, we had a '59 Lotus Elite...this was back in '62-3.

Right hand drive. Little jessie could corner like no ones business. Broke down if you looked at it wrong.

Smelled heavenly...

She probably wouldn't notice but the work to get it out,and then try and get it running might draw the neighbors' attention...it could go awry...

471 You notice how many children are featured? Rarely one, and minimally 2.

472 My first car was a 1963 Ford Falcon.
A neighbor was a mechanic.
His wife had a '65 Mustang (RED in color).
He said that Ford had basically dropped a Mustang body on a Falcon frame and running gear.
He was not impressed.
I used to keep spare parts, tools (large hammer was necessary to beat the brake drum off of the locked up brake shoes when the actuating cam over rotated) , food, water, flashlight, flares, fire making stuff, and a blanket in the trunk in case it stranded me.
No AAA membership.
Starving student.
Picked up pop bottles for gas at 28 cents a gallon.
It taught me to be self sufficient and fix almost anything anywhere with bailing wire, a 12 inch Crescent wrench, a screwdriver, and a big hammer. The lug wrench the first multi-tool. :-)
The Safety Inspections the CHP set up for harassment purposes on the way highway coming off campus ALWAYS nailed me for headlight alignment. I had to pay a licensed shop to adjust them to clear the fix it ticket. The guy at the shop told me the adjustment only lasts until the first bump in the road.
Pure harassment by The Man.

473 The Mustang II was the body dropped on a Pinto frame.
They do/did that stuff all the time.
The difference between a lot of models for many years was only the sheet metal and maybe a different power plant and some accessories or "New" mechanical stuff.

474 We left for Frisco in your Rambled
The radiator running dry
I've never been much of a gambler
And had a preference to fly.
You said forget about the airline
We'll take the car and save the fare
We blew a gasket on the Grapevine
And eighty dollars on repair.
